St Louis Rams having "intense conversations" about McNabb trade

According to a report in the St Louis Post Dispatch, the St Louis Rams have discussed trading for QB Donovan McNabb.

According to more than one well-informed source, the Rams have had intense internal conversations with the Philadelphia Eagles about a trade for Pro Bowler Donovan McNabb.

Of course, the writing here leaves a little to be desired. The guy says the conversations have been "internal" while also saying they were with the Eagles. Not sure how the Rams can have internal conversations with the Eagles. It's an important distinction because one interpretation means the Eagles are actively talking trade while the other means the Rams are just discussing whether to make an offer...

We'll keep an eye on this one.

Something tells me we might be done talking about how many people should have called Brian Westbrook to tell him he’s been cut…

by JasonB on Mar 2, 2010 1:14 PM EST reply actions

Haha, not me. I think the minimum number is 8.

So what are we thinking here if there’s really some meat to this? The Rams’ 2 and 4? Maybe a 2 this year and a conditional next year?

by JimmyK on Mar 2, 2010 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

I really like the idea of a conditional…. especially since they are in the terrible NFC West which you can win at 9-7

by Tron79 on Mar 2, 2010 1:23 PM EST up reply actions

The Rams’ 2 and 4

I’ve really felt that was really in the right neighborhood. I’d like like to see a legit backup in the deal too – Bulger perhaps…

by cavortingEagle on Mar 2, 2010 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

Haha, how about Kyle Boller?

by JimmyK on Mar 2, 2010 1:35 PM EST up reply actions

that sounds about right.

that second pick is like having a late first round pick. Really good pick to have, you can get some value there.

I am afraid McNabb squashes this trade, he may not be willing to play for the Rams. All he has to do is not agree to an extenstion, then swooosh, this all goes away. Lets hope Spags talks good dough for that extention. We would be in really, really good shape if this goes through, imagine us getting Witherspoon and Mays, and still have our second round pick, We can get a stud corner here.

I wanted to throw something out there, just to say I said so.

I have a bad feeling we draft Tim Tebow if he slips to the late 3rd or 4th round. Andy almost drafted Pat White last year, and we did sign Vick :(. But we can expect the Eagles to trade McNabb and Vick, leaving Kolb as the only QB on the roster. He will definately draft a Backup QB, and Tebow is just that (a career Backup). He will not be drafted by a team to start, he will got to a good team as a back up. Either Philly, Min, NE, Pit.

I just wanted to throw that out there, just to say, (I told you so) when it happens.

Andy may see him as a football player rather than just a QB. Plus, he would be lethal running the Wildcat, imagine a FB running Wildcat, he can get that extra yard.

(that was kind of off topic, but I wanted to throw it out there before I forget) What do you think? I have a gut feeling on this one.

adam schefter reported on ESPN last year that all signs point to kolb and vick both staying in philly this upcoming season. also, tebow isn’t even cut out to be a second string quarterback yet in this league. there’s no way your second string QB can be a rookie unless he’s the future of the franchise.

Well, the Eagles surely wouldn’t give him up for less. Hopefully I don’t have to work if they do wind up trading McNabb, because a day of raining beer sounds fun and I wouldn’t want to miss that.

You're right.

Andy Reid, Joe Banner and Jeff Lurie are all terrible people.

...But if he pulls the rug on his quarterback, Reid must do it knowing that he let McNabb down more than McNabb ever let him down.

No. It’s not like the good old days when having the 1st overall pick was a great thing. These days, you have to pay the 1st overall pick so much ridiculous money that most teams try to trade out of that spot every year.

Yep

we want no part of that pick. If we were gonna overpay for uncertain production, we would not have just cut Westbrook.

Because one of those 33 year olds is Donovan McNabb, and the other is Marc Bulger.

by JimmyK on Mar 2, 2010 1:26 PM EST up reply actions

The Rams are the one of bottom 3 teams in the league. A 33 yr old QB won’t save their problems. That team is very far from contending. They need to rebuild that team and you need picks to rebuild.

Bye 36, you will be missed...

by Route36 on Mar 2, 2010 1:29 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, but they play in the NFC West. With Warner retired and the Cards letting everyone walk that division is up for grabs. It doesn’t take that long for a franchise to turn it around.

by JasonB on Mar 2, 2010 1:31 PM EST up reply actions

Rams are 32nd in offense(10.9 ppg) and 31st in defense(27.2 ppg). They wil be looking up at the Niners and Cards for at least the next 3 years. I didn’t even mention how low this would be sending Mcnabb there. I won’t be surprised though, “business over football” right?

Bye 36, you will be missed...

by Route36 on Mar 2, 2010 1:44 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, but a major reason for that was their QB play.

by JimmyK on Mar 2, 2010 1:46 PM EST up reply actions

You think Mcnabb will be putting up pro bowl numbers with that atrocious O-line(28th at FO) with sub par receivers? I know Steven Jackson will help him out but that won’t be enough. Bulger was a damn good QB from 02-06, it’s not like it’s all because of him they suck. He sucks because that team since 07 blows.

You think Mcnabb will be putting up pro bowl numbers with that atrocious O-line(28th at FO) with sub par receivers?

No, but it would still be a vast improvement.

by JimmyK on Mar 2, 2010 2:14 PM EST up reply actions

lets also remember that the rams are in the process of changing ownership…

-maybe the new owner has always been inspired by Daniel Snyder and is bringing that type of mentality to the team
- maybe the new owner (who just dropped $750m and is reportedly having problems with debt) wants some quick returns on his investment. Whether its from mcnabb jersey sales or the thought that mcnabb/jackson/avery is enough to make a push in the NFC west

While I agree with you that logic says the rams should do the smart thing and try to rebuild slowly through the draft it doesnt always work out that way. Do I expect this deal to happen… No. Is it plausible enough that it could happen… Definetely

VOID!!!

by dt3 on Mar 2, 2010 1:50 PM EST up reply actions

i agree the rams suck and it doesn’t make much sense to trade for an older player, but they can compete next year. they pretty solid WR corps. with a good QB and a better D next year (which I think would be helped by having Suh), they can compete for the division.

Maybe Im not goiving him enough credit for playing with a patched up line and 3 really young player weapons.

Im thinking he would have higher value with a former Offensive coach where he know the system and some terminolgy. Vikings certainly come to mind and any place Gruden shows up. Im limited because I dont know many of your old coaches.

Because realistically, McNabb would realistically have to be on board with whatever destination we might trade him to. I’m sure the Rams would want an extension done with McNabb first.

by Eaglesfan10 on Mar 2, 2010 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

He will sign an extension

For all the “I want to go to a contender” talk, players are actually move motivated by money. If he doesn’t sign an extension he HAS to play this season. If he gets hurt that means he will never get paid from a football team again. If he makes it through the season unharmed he can sign with someone (who isn’t a contender because contenders aren’t looking for a 34 year old QB – Vikes aside) who will likely pay him what St Louis will offer him now. A smart person would take the money. I don’t see this being an issue.

Disagree completely. For all intents and purposes, these guys are all dumb rich. Shoot, you make 300,000 a year, you’re dumb rich.

I think they want bigger contract than players they think they’re better than, but other than that … winning is the only thing a shit-ton of money can’t buy you. For people who have everything else in life, in my experience around them, winning is the main thing they seem to be motivated by. (maybe because winning strokes your ego)

Also take into consideration that McNabb will not most likely not sign a contract extension with the rams, so basiaclly the Rams who have needs at almost everysingle positon will be trading valueable draft picks in a pretty deep draft to rent a 33yr old QB for 1 season? I highly doubt this happens.

Yeah, I think 6 extra wins is reasonable. Frankly, I think it’s reasonable to give the Rams 3 or 4 more wins even if they don’t trade for McNabb.

Teams can turn it around quickly these days. Look at the Dolphins – They went from 1-15 in 2007 to winning the division the following year. Look at the Falcons – They went 4-12 in 2007 to winning the division. It can happen.

You think they give McNabb to the Rams and throw in a 6th rounder.

Before you bash me remember you got a hell of a QB contoversy brewing. Your blog is divided and unless a big deal is done it gets lots of ink. I could see the locker room divided the same way. If Don is on the bench and Kolb struggles early it goes from ugly to lost season.

Nobody wants to have their former QB go to a contender and come back in a revenge game and beat you in the playoffs. Rams arent contending, they need a big name and can afford to pay his contract.
Ok, the throw in a 6th rounder was to get your goat. I dont think McNabb has much trade value. He looks like he is done. He spent a little to much time looking at the rush and not enough looking downfield. Thats a bad sign.

Maybe he was dinged up and we dont know about it but he is a time bomb waiting to explode. The Eagles have repeatively shown they arent afraid to let guys go before their play falls off.

I dont think McNabb has much trade value. He looks like he is done.

There are 32 NFL teams… I’d be interested in seeing a list of QB’s you think had a better year than McNabb last year.

by JimmyK on Mar 2, 2010 3:45 PM EST up reply actions

Didn’t the Eagles lead the league in pass plays over 20 yards?

Also, our blog being divided on McNabb? I got news for you… the Eagles organization doesn’t care.

Let the beasting begin.

by TransplantedFan on Mar 2, 2010 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

the Eagles organization doesn’t care.

Exactly. If they cared what people thought, they never would have signed Vick.

I remain convinced that Andy loves him some DonDon and it would have to take an unturndownable offer (yeah, I just made that word up) to pry McNabb from his [insert food joke here] greasy mitts.

You're right

Here’s our business model: Cut old aging players with big contracts and whos skill is on the decline. That fits McNabb perfectly.

His stats were largely inflated by the bad defenses we faced, and even when he played lights out his inconsistency passing still led to too many thee and outs leaving our defense in really bad positions. The Denver game was a perfect example of this: lights up the score board in the first half, then look like a confused rookie in the second half with two picks and 3 and outs …except the very last drive, but the game should’ve never been tied.

by Joe_D on Mar 2, 2010 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

You're just jealous

That our team will potentially get a first round pick for our old QB, and we have a young QB waiting in the wings.

You only have Tony Romo and basically no decent trade-able players that you are willing to part with.

by MyronBales on Mar 2, 2010 4:23 PM EST up reply actions

I doubt there's even anyone on the Cowboys roster who could potentially fetch a first rounder at this point

in a trade except for DeMarcus Ware. And if the Cowboys get rid of Demarcus Ware, their defense falls into the bottom 5 of the league.

by MyronBales on Mar 2, 2010 4:27 PM EST up reply actions

Not to stick up for the Cowboys, but there are plenty...

Ware, Spencer, Ratliff, Romo, Austin, Witten, and maybe Felix Jones and Mike Jenkins.

by JimmyK on Mar 2, 2010 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

Ok, I'll give you Romo, Ware, Ratliff and maybe Austin.

Felix Jones and Anthony Spencer are still unprovens and I don’t see anyone giving them a first rounder for those guys just yet.

Witten is 30+ and I don’t see them giving up first rounders for a TE on the downhill side of his career. Franchise QBs are different.

The point, though, is that the Cowboys can’t afford to give up any of those guys (Romo, Ware, Ratliff, and Austin). Give up Romo and you don’t have a QB. Give up Ware and your defense falls apart. Give up Ratliff and your front 3 are in shambles. GIve up Austin and you lose the one legit WR you have on your roster.

The Eagles can easily afford to part ways with McNabb and still get a first rounder in the process.

by MyronBales on Mar 2, 2010 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

Disclaimer - I hate the Cowboys. OK, now that I've said that, allow me to disagree...
Witten is 30+ and I don’t see them giving up first rounders for a TE on the downhill side of his career.

Witten is 27.

Felix Jones and Anthony Spencer are still unprovens and I don’t see anyone giving them a first rounder for those guys just yet.

I said maybe Jones, so I won’t debate that one, but Spencer… definitely.

Spencer’s last 8 games last year – 47 tackles, 8 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 7 tackles for loss. He was bad the first half of the year, and did very little the first 2 years of his career, but was an absolute monster down the stretch. Ask Dallas fans if they’d trade him for a 1 – You won’t find many takers.

As for the comment about “If they traded one of those guys their team would be seriously hurt,” I’m not quite sure what that means. Frankly, I’d love it if the Eagles had 7 or 8 guys worthy of a #1 pick, but we don’t. I count 4 definites…

Jackson, Maclin, Peters, T. Cole.

And 3 maybe’s… Celek, Kolb, and McNabb.

by JimmyK on Mar 2, 2010 5:12 PM EST up reply actions

asante is a maybe. stewart bradley probably would have been without last years injury.

by bula412 on Mar 2, 2010 5:24 PM EST up reply actions

The point was that

The Eagles can afford to part ways with a player who has the potential to net them a first rounder.

The Cowboys probably can’t: i.e. if you get rid of any one of: Tony Romo. Miles Austin, Jason Witten, DeMarcus Ware, Jay Ratliff, or Jenkins, the team will greatly suffer.

by MyronBales on Mar 2, 2010 6:17 PM EST up reply actions

Without Romo, they have no QB and thus no offense.

WIthout Austin, they have no legit WR and thus their offense is alot worse

Without Ware they have no pass rush

Without Ratliff their 3-4 falls apart

etc.

Whereas, without McNabb, we have the team that we probably will end up having in a 2-3 years anyway. Alot of people might argue with me for saying this, but I don’t think the dropoff from McNabb to Kolb would be all that great if you consider that Kolb’s job is mostly to be a game manager get the ball to the playmakers like Jackson, Celek, and Maclin.

The Cowboys have no player they can afford to trade away for a first rounder NOW without significantly weakening their current team.

by MyronBales on Mar 2, 2010 6:22 PM EST up reply actions

Well, on one point it makes sense. The MONEY!!

The Rams owe Bulger about what the Eagles owe McNabb. The Rams need to raise revenue. They need to sell tickets and jerseys. A defensive tackle does nothing for them in that sense.

Bring in McNabb and TO….People will be intrested. Jerseys will be sold…lol!!

There can be all kinds of add ons with future picks and existing players such as Gocong and Gaither, Max-Jean…I can see something possibly happening here.

Did anyone notice the Eagles interviewed Gerald McCoy at the combine?

Bulger would make a great back-up for Kolb.

Makes sense...

Rams keep there first round draft pickand draft a QB. Trade their second for McNabb. Now they have an actual GOOD veteran for 2 to 3 years to mentor the rookie QB they just drafted and when it’s time for McNabb to retire, BOOM. Backup QB gets his day. And the Eagles got to round out their defense. YAY!

by moneymaker on Mar 2, 2010 5:50 PM EST reply actions

EVEN I WOULD!!!!

Yes even the GREAT Trade Kolb would do that deal in a Syracuse second! I love you Don. But the idea of Suh and Bunkley clogging that middle with Pat rotating is just SICK! Kolb is looking good now! LOL!

THis is really getting old.

Every off season, there is at least a handful of articles about someone hearing that McNabb will no longer wear midnight green. The laughable part is that people that want McNabb gone will believe and hold on to everyone of these fact thin articles to get them through the off season. It never fails. Can someone please explain to me what sense it makes for Spags to make this trade? Does he believe his team will be a contender next season?

Does it not make more sense for them do what Atlanta has done with Matt Ryan and go the Bradford way? To believe this article is to also believe that the Rams F.O are moronic fools stupid enough to give up their first round pick for another 33yr old QB. Plus how in the world are people saying well it’s not just a 33 yr old QB it’s Donovan McNabb? What the hell does that mean? Is he washed up and declining or is he still a legitimate QB? You all need to make up your minds on this.

The last thing is that McNabb maybe goofy sometimes but he’s not a fool. He cares about is legacy in this league and want to be HOF….The only trade he will agree to will be a trade to the Vikes or another contender. So calm your nerves folks…..This story get a PANTS ON FIRE type of lie. It has no ounce of truth to it. I believe McNabb can still lead this team but I won’t stop being an Eagle if he’s traded… Business is business but please just because you don’t like the dude doesn’t mean you should raise your hopes on a glaring fallacy

by Super52010 on Mar 2, 2010 6:21 PM EST reply actions

It's a slow off season.

If we don’t talk about this, what else are we supposed to talk about. It’s tired, I know but whatever. Last year we sat through the Boldin/Edwards/Marshall trade rumors talks. Complaining about it won’t make it go away. =D

At this point

I would definitely take a Pro Bowler for McNabb. I mean a Professional Bowler. See here:

Whoever said it doesn't matter whether you win or lose, probably lost.

by David Harnden on Mar 2, 2010 6:31 PM EST reply actions

Just make something happen. McNabb needs to go and start over somewhere. I don’t know why the 49ers aren’t interested in Vick or Mcnabb. They are a good team, they just need a QB. I would take a 2nd and a conditional 4th.

his is a great year to have all the picks we usually do. We need to gobble up as much defensive talent as we can.

No way Vick stays here, that is just my take on it.

by topcat6 on Mar 2, 2010 7:39 PM EST reply actions

I disagree

I think we should keep Donovan, package Kolb and Vick to use the picks to make more o -line and defensive depth/starters.

by Young Eagle on Mar 2, 2010 7:47 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Why invest 3 years in Kolb and then trade him?

I want one more go-round with McNabb, but under no circumstances should Kolb go. Well, one circumstance: if he can’t play.

Otherwise, I don’t see the point in investing a high pick and 3 years in a guy who’s gonna net you, what, another second round pick in return?

Kolb is going nowhere.

i would love

to keep mcnabb and love to see him win a SB in Philadelpia. but if we do trade him i would hope they would atleast trade him to a contender so he atleast has a chance to win a SB somewhere else.

2-3 years? Mcnabb wants to win, i doubt he resigns with a rebuilding team after his contract is up after the year.

The reporter admits it was a mistake...

“Let me start right off by saying, I hate to do this but my copy desk screwed up my copy,” Burwell said. “I did not say that the Philadelphia Eagles and the Rams were having intense conversations. . . . What I having intense conversations. . . . What I wrote — and I just noticed it while I’m wrote — and I just noticed it while I’m reading my column now and I went, ‘Holy crap, I didn’t say that’ — what I initially wrote was that the Rams were having intense internal conversations about [acquiring] Philadelphia Eagle Donovan McNabb.” reading my column now and I went, ‘Holy reading my column now and I went, ’Holy crap, I didn’t say that’ — what I initially wrote was that the Rams were having intense internal conversations about [acquiring] Philadelphia Eagle Donovan McNabb."

What a dick

blaming the copy desk, whose job it is to save him from his own mistakes … the probably save his ass 99 times out of 100, and when they (supposedly) mess up, he throws them under the bus.

He could have accomplished the same thing by saying “We messed up. It should have read ‘the Rams were having intense internal conversations about [acquiring] Philadelphia Eagle Donovan McNabb.’ Thanks for pointing out the mistake.”

This guy sounds like a real team player T.O.cough*T.O.*

...an equally "well-informed source" told me...

…that the Eagles were going to trade Kevin Kolb to the estate of “Uncle” Eddie Savitz for some soiled undergarments and a few spare pizza boxes.

http://www.nytimes.com/1992/04/02/us/philadelphia-suspect-a-troubled-life.html?pagewanted=1

And the rumor mill keeps on a’goin!

...But if he pulls the rug on his quarterback, Reid must do it knowing that he let McNabb down more than McNabb ever let him down.

Not a chance

I see McNabb selling tickets in St. Louis but they’d have to draft another O lineman to help protect him to keep putting up the number he keeps putting up.

That's a huge point that is overlooked

when people claim that McNabb is not worth the 2-3 years for a rebuilding franchise, but he will fill the empty seats without even playing a snap and he will provide leadership which is severly lacking there.
