The guy is 6'2 230 and he just ran a 4.24 40 yard dash...

UPDATE - Taylor Mays official time was a 4.43

Guess someone was a little to quick with the trigger on the first report. Still a solid time.

Wow jason. Posted the same story at the exact same time. Im trying not to get into the hype of May’s 40 time but he is a lot faster than most people thought. Some people dont like him but i think most fans wouldnt complain if we drafted him. He hits just like dawkins.

by andyb on Mar 2, 2010 12:26 PM EST reply actions

I don;t know if I agree

I don’t think anyone ever doubted Mays’ athletic ability. That was never the issue with him.

by JasonB on Mar 2, 2010 12:29 PM EST up reply actions

I wasnt questioning his athletic ability. At 6’2 230, i already consider that impressive. I dont think anyone was expecting him to even get in the 4.3s.

by andyb on Mar 2, 2010 12:32 PM EST up reply actions

sweet mother of Christ

i was expecting a 4.4, and I thought that was overblown.

THAT is something any NFL coach could work with

worthless combine stats

god i want him on this squad

Wow...

Haha, looks like he’ll be a Raider. I’m not a combine guy by any means, but that’s an eye-popping number. Personally, I’m not a a fan of his game and don’t want to see the Eagles pick him in the 1st round, so I’m glad to see he’ll likely be gone now by the time we pick.

by JimmyK on Mar 2, 2010 12:33 PM EST reply actions

no, the Raider's first round pick is already selected

Its the even freakier freak, Bruce Campbell. This 320 lb Offensive Tackle ran a 4.78. That is by far the fastest time ever for an offensive lineman. He also put up 34 reps on the bench press (225 lbs) with CRAZY LONG 36 inch arms.

Long arms usually mean less reps, because that means you have to lift the bar even further….so this number is even more astounding than the 40 time.

by birds'n'raiders on Mar 2, 2010 12:37 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, no way he drops to 24 now.

In fact, I’ll be incredibly surprised if he makes it out of the top 15

About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.

here ya go

package a deal of sheldon and super5 to arizona for a 1st rounder… that’s it.
other stip of this deal: eagles HAVE to pick up antrel rolle before the deal goes down… whaddya think?

by PHIGHTINPHILS on Mar 2, 2010 12:34 PM EST reply actions

NO!

That makes Napoleon’s decision to sell the Louisiana Purchase seem like a brilliant move.

Both of them for ONE first rounder? Are you brain damaged? NO! Maybe if it was just McNabb or just Brown…but both? No get off the crack pipe

GO CUSE, BLUE, AND EAGLES!

by tanman5 on Mar 2, 2010 12:42 PM EST up reply actions

i love me some donovan mcCRACK! (deion)

yea, both for a 1st rounder. sheldon hates it here, he wants a longer term deal, the eagles are not going to give it to him. i think it’s a solid time to trade super5 while he’s got a little value.
nobody is going to give us a 1st rounder for 1 or the other, so put em together…

by PHIGHTINPHILS on Mar 2, 2010 4:42 PM EST up reply actions

Where have you seen that Sheldon hates it here???

at the same time he declined an probowl invite he said he loves philly but would just like a few more bucks.

actually vice versa, but you get it

if we signed Rolle, we’d have a top safety, in which case I’d keep him there and move someone else to a different position.

i think

the saftey FA market has more options than corner… you should be able to get sharper cheap(er) than normal due to the possible lockout after this coming season…

great, that speed will come in handy when..

It’s gonna be an official 4.3 something. CJ spiller ran an unofficial 4.28 but officially it became a 4.37. Still, freakin’ amazing.

by Route36 on Mar 2, 2010 12:54 PM EST up reply actions

No matter what

Raiders got him as nr.1 on their draft board. I still think though that he can be a good box safety, if he will be coached properly. One of his biggest problems is angle of pursuit and tackle technics.

Btw guys can you tell me who is that old gray haired guy in Eagles jacket at the Combine? He’ve been there all four days.

by Isi_eagle on Mar 2, 2010 12:51 PM EST reply actions

Mays probably did run the 4.2, but asked the NFL change it so he wouldn’t end up with the Raiders.

by JasonB on Mar 2, 2010 1:37 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

mays 40...

NFL network showed the image of him running w/ Ford in the 40, he’s right behind Ford. Looks like he’s a lot closer then .15 behind him.

"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

Hahahaha...

When Mays realized his time went from 4.24 to 4.43, I wonder if he realized that cost him about $10 million.

Maybe not

He wasn’t going to be top 5 any way you slice it.

by Sparki on Mar 2, 2010 2:24 PM EST up reply actions

i didn’t want mays. i was hoping that 4.24 would stick because maybe a team might take mays instead of earl thomas and we could get thomas at 24. it was highly doubtful but oh well. that 4.43 won’t put him above thomas. mays isn’t much of a playmaker. he had 5 picks in 4 years which means the birds would never take him. i assume (j haven’t really watched him much) that he is an athletic safety with bad insticts. he doesn’t react very fast but makes up for it with his athletic ability. that is why he still could cover and tackle but couldn’t really get in front of the reciever before the ball gets there

by bula412 on Mar 2, 2010 2:05 PM EST reply actions

If mays runs a 4.24, Im changing my "nay" on him to a "fuck yeah philly dont fuck this up"

when it said he ran a 4.24 I died laughing in the middle of lunch, the dude’s not that fast… If he were he’d go top 10 easily and if he came close to us we’d be dumb not to take him cuz w/ that kinda speed everything else can be taught.

No, my point is that

if you get an athlete that’s 6-3 220-something-lbs and who runs a 4.2 who has at worst minimal football skills you can teach the coverage…

Look I'm not saying just go after speed, your purposely

twisting my words to be a dick, yomjoseki..

With someone who has the physical attributes of Mays and who can run a 4.24(although he did not) if coverage were his problem then you can Teach coverage expecially with Juron as DB coach.

I still like him as the choice.

40 time in a safety isn’t critical unless it’s really bad. 4.69 isn’t all that good, but it’s fast enough probably.

by NOLACuse on Mar 2, 2010 4:16 PM EST up reply actions

Um, thats terrible for a skill player,

although he’s just a good FB player, so i think it makes up for his speed.

That's my point.

At safety being a good FB player is more important than top speed. If a WR, CB or RB is turning in that number I’d be worried. At safety it doesn’t bother me that much.

by NOLACuse on Mar 2, 2010 5:40 PM EST up reply actions

yes and no.

with that speed I’d want to see him at SS, not FS where he has to roam the field…

His pro-day will be better, its gotta be the fact he’s been outta football.

You know what's funny?

One of his interviews on NFL Network, Myron Rolle said he saw one scouting report that listed him as a 4.77- 40. He said he was gonna “turn some heads and get some ooohs & ahhs if they think he is that slow”. Dude only ran a 4.69. He is getting waaaay too much publicity in my opinion.

Bye 36, you will be missed...

by Route36 on Mar 3, 2010 12:57 AM EST up reply actions

Eh well they've apparently proved that May's ran faster than Holliday

and Holliday ran a 4.3 so we never know really..

Myron just needs to work on his speed, I’ve known he’s slower for a DB but his game speed is what I care about.

40 time doesn’t mean a whole lot to CBs, and it means even less to safeties.

Seriously. DB play is about a lot of backing up, turning on a route, and the like. A CB will very rarely be matched up man-to-man on a receiver running a go route. A safety will almost never be. So where does straight-on running ever come into play?

by wildcatlh on Mar 2, 2010 3:48 PM EST reply actions

I bet it was really a 4.42 that got written down wrong

It’s just a reference stat to say “look how fast this guy is”.
Do they have them run with pads, helmet, all the other gear on? Makes a difference.

As to wildcatlh’s comment, this may not sound serious but I mean it: only straight-forward running I can think of is run (or short play) support or covering crossing routes – maybe they should time the CB’s at running backward.

by Rabbit T on Mar 3, 2010 4:35 AM EST reply actions

Clocked at 4.19?
Taylor Mays was timed as fast as 4.19 seconds in the 40-yard dash by former USC coach Pete Carroll when the NFL safety prospect and the new Seattle Seahawks coach were on campus, according to a league source.

Mays’ official time today was 4.43 seconds after unofficial times of 4.24 and 4.34 seconds.

There’s no question that Mays is fast.

4.19 my ass, it was prolly just to get into the opposing teams head..

Head Coaches alway bulk up the stats to make there team seem bigger, faster and stronger than they really are.

40 times don’t mean anything. Just watch game tape. You can’t measure a defensive backs ability to change direction with a stop watch.
