What is the reason for the cuts? Besides the obvious......
.....that they are over 30 yrs old?
Sorry, couldn't resist.
So, we (read: The Eagles) have cut ties with Kevin Curtis and Darren Howard. I must say, that when both of these guys were signed I was very happy. However, upon further review, perhaps we over paid a bit for both of these players, who at the time, filled substantial needs for our team.
Curtis and Howard should both be held up as reasons that FA signings can be very over blown by the fan base and the media.
But I digress, why all the cuts?
This post is less of an answer, and more of a question that I hope you all can answer for me, or maybe we can spark a healthy discussion. The way I see it these cuts are either:
A. Trimming older players who cannot be counted to match their paycheck with their production on the field.
B. Injury related
So what do the birds do with all this extra money? Pocket it? Extend promising young talent?
The way I see it, Curtis and Howard being cut paid for Weaver and Avants extensions, as well as the contract that Tapp will get (Yes I am rounding quite a bit). The loss of Westbrook, Witherspoon and the trade of Reggie Brown signifies to me that they still have some money to play with.
Could this be a sign of extending DeSean? Well according to one of his most recent tweets:
I'm bout to move like the wind ya hear me!! On this trip to philly for couple days to handle some things get this bread.... 1 time
Followed by:
On this plane 2 Cali bac that fast & I'm mo paid.. trip was acomplished and now I'm sittn in 1st class full & ready to drink up.. yeaa buddy
Now, I am not fluent in Tweets, however it seems to me that DJax was saying that he was headed to Philly for a meeting involving money, and the second is that he is headed back to California and that he is "mo paid" or in plain english, has gotten more money, an extension? God I hope so!!!
Or is it possible that they are trimming the extra branches to get their hands on a high draft pick and be able to pay his ridiculous salary (ERIC BERRY!!!!).
Well I hope this isn't too ridiculous to ask, just thought I would pose the question.
Oh, and a third option is that they are expecting a strike next year, and with the uncertainty of the CBA they don't want to be hamstrung by a lower cap number and not be able to be competitive in future FA markets. (Most likely in my opinion....damn)
Go Birds!

We already went over some of this with rpp.
It’s not extending Desean. We can’t extend him yet because of the CBA, so that’s not what the tweets were about. We would have known if that happened anyway. That stuff always, always, always leaks before the pen is even put to paper.
The cuts are simple, the players are getting older, have been surpassed or replaced with other players and cost too much. It frees up roster space, but more importantly, cap space. The Eagles love working with cap space and obviously they see no reason to change how they do things for an uncapped year. Probably a smart move honestly. Curtis was already basically a non-factor. Between DJax, Maclin, Avant and Baskett, there isn’t room for him. With Tapp arriving, Howard is pushed off the depth chart with Parker and Abiamiri basically in front of him.

I don’t think this is true. I’m pretty sure after two years, we can extend him.
According to PFT we can anyway.
Jackson is eligible for an extension because he has completed two NFL seasons.
I thought we had confirmed that the current CBA situation meant an extra year was applied to most of those contract rules.
Which is why so many players are RFAs instead of UFAs this year.
I thought the 30% max raise
was why he isn’t getting an extension soon. Because he’s going to get about a 300% raise when it’s all said and done.
I’ve read conflicting stuff and am now mo’ confused.
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
I think it's obvious
that we’ll be extending Desean in the near future. (It hasn’t happened yet though. Those tweets, I think, were just about an appearance he got paid to do. That’s all.)
I also think, if Kolb is our future at QB, he will be extended soon too.
But that still leaves a good bit of money leftover.
Guys like Bradley, Bunkley, and Mikell might warrant extensions. Some may argue that Sheldon Brown should get paid too (I’m not one of them).
So that bodes the question… are we freeing up this space to only take care of our own? Or is it to add another high impact player or two?
I don’t have the answer, but I’m hoping the answer is BOTH.
Aren't we already taking care of our own?
I mean weren’t the salarys we dumped expiring in like 2 seasons anyway, and most of our best talent is younger, the only key person we need to resign in the next year is kevin kolb. I think were at like around 120 Million for this coming year, the cap last years was 128, and the floor for 112.
If we trade McNabb we can dump his 11 Million dollar salary. Heres a link to our salary infor http://www.eaglescap.com/current.html
DeSean Jackson is probably the biggest name we will try to re-sign in the next year, but Bunkley, Bradley, and Jordan might be re-signed within a year or so as well. After next season, Maclin and McCoy will likely be offered extensions.
I am the people's troll :3™
yea but its not like thatll break the bank
we have allocated money for player salary, the point is we have all our guys (so far) signed for this year and still have spent a heck of a lot less (so far) than we normally do on roster salarys.
Of the players who were cut, only Darren Howard was productive last season. The rest had missed a lot of games, and with their age and/or injury histories, they are unlikely to be productive in the future. Howard is also older. He had 6.5 sacks last season, and is due to make $11 million of the next two years. He’s not a bad player, necessarily, but there are better ways to spend 11 mil.
We don't have enough ammo to trade anywhere near high enough to take Berry
Either draft picks or players
Next years picks
I won’t be suprised if we trade our first next year, theres a lot of good talent in this draft and we got the money to pay them. We’re approaching the cap minimum. I think thats also where we pick up picks for McNabb and Vick.
I posted some info on our cap space in the fanshot section
Check it out. We will have a lot of money to play with.

We got rid of bad contracts with older players
took advantage of there being no cap penalty on releasing/trading guys.
I read we can extend Desean, but for only a 30% increase under the current CBA. That’s obviously not nearly enough… so I’d expect Desean is basically stuck with his current contract until there is a new CBA

Actually, DeSean Jackson CAN sign a new contract according to PFT.
http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2010/03/18/no-contract-extension-for-desean-jackson-yet/
But we’d still hear about negotiations before it happened.

In addition to DeSean, we’re more than likely to try to extend Kolb and Bunkley. Also, next offseason, we’ll probably want to extend Maclin and McCoy.

We probably
are taking advantage of an uncapped year. Cutting players increases the cap penalty and reduces the amount of money we can spend. By doing it in an uncapped year there is no cap penalty! At least that is what I think.
I think it made the decision easier
but yea these players were probably out the door anyway because of their high pay increase, we all knew cutris would be cut.
PierrEagles, I think you nailed it here:
A. Trimming older players who cannot be counted to match their paycheck with their production on the field.
The gone list reads Westbrook, Andrews, Witherspoon, Howard, Curtis, R. Brown & Clemons.
With the possible exception of ’Spoon, none of those guys could be counted on to play to the level of his contract this season. And we all know the Eagles are about paying for expected future production.
Although Bye, Dawk articulates the fan’s wish that the Eagles would spend whatever it costs to go for it in the uncapped year, the reality is no business pays more than they have to just because they can.
It seems like the Eagles are expecting the cap to return in 2011 and beyond and took this one-time get-out-of-jail free card on every player who underperformed his contract.
I’m not certain about this, but the roster now features McNabb and Sheldon Brown as the two remaining players over 30. (Maybe Herremans or somebody is 30 and I don’t know. Juqua is … but now we’re getting away from key starter territory).
Basically, it looks like the Birds will have an opportunity to add five players in the first four rounds, most of which can reasonably be expected to make the team. I’m guessing we’ll make some more trades or free agent moves, but basically the cost of stripping your roster and recreating it with 95% youth is that at some point you have to give all these young guys extensions or risk losing them, and I bet a lot of the space clearing is going to end up keeping our homegrown talent here rather than bringing in more guys off other teams. I don’t know that that makes us a Super Bowl team, but it definitely beats the alternative of drafting & developing guys only to lose them for nothing.
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
I think the real question is
what are they going to do with this extra money? The way I see it is one of these:
A) They are going to make a big move up in the draft, or trade McNabb straight up for a really expensive player. Basically make a big move and somehow bring in a stud.
B) saving their money in fear their will be a lock out and be able to come out firing in the 2011 post lockout free agency. The Eagles FO probably has an idea of what the new CBA will look like and are playing smart for the long hall which could mean up to two years of non-super bowl contention. If this is true, we could be SB favorites in the 2012-13 season.
C) They’re actually are super evil and don’t give a shit about a SB just want to sell out the games and know they’ve done enough to probably do that for the next few years even without a playoff appearance. FFFFudge.
And don’t worry about DJAX, Andy Reid loves the kid and he will be around for a long time. He’ll get his.
We made all the cuts for the same reason we evermake cuts/trades. Because we can go younger and cheaper and get equal to or better production. And when nobody wants to trade for you, and your teams doesn’t want you, you get cut. Plus no salary cap penalty.

B
I think the Eagles know what’s coming around the bend. They are trying to lock up the young players so that their team roster/chemistry will stay largely unchanged in 2012 should an NFL season be canned. Then when they have to meet the new salary floor they will make some splashes that offseason and gear up for another SB push.
I never understood the “Eagles don’t want to win a SB” angle because a SB means more ticket sales, more commerce for the city of Philadelphia, more money. Absolutely they want that. Just don’t want to push all of your chips forward if you don’t have the best hand.

First off, I have no idea what DeSean wrote. Either I’m old or I don’t understand newly evolved English.
I think this offseason is a great example that the Eagles will not over-pay for a player. They don’t let sentimentality get in the way of the business that is pro football (releasing Westbrook). Are not going to keep an expensive player who is injury prone, unreliable, and brings a bit of drama (Shawn Andrews).
You had to figure that Kevin Curtis was not going to be long for this team the day they drafted Maclin. Curtis’s injuries combined with his salary and the emergence of DeSean Jackson and Jason Avant made him completely expendable and way over priced for his current role on the team.
You have to give them credit because they do know how to run the business side of the personnel game. Reggie Brown aside, they rarely over-pay to retain players. I have to believe that they have some inkling of what could happen with a new collective bargaining agreement and are putting themselves in position to manage it. So, I don’t think it means they will be throwing cash around on free agents or resigning expiring contracts.

And I...
Can’t really blame them for tha Brown mistake bc everybody and they mama thought he had a promising road ahead of him, which he actually did but in football one day your one of the worlds greatest or soon to be one and seem to deserve the money the next your some scrub or has been. That’s were the ugly business side shows its face.

I agree, at the time it looked like a good move to resign Reggie Brown
But that contract turned out be be a big albatross hung around their necks
