Around SBN: Watch Out For Cowboys UDFA Tim Benford

Assuming there will be a 2011 season and a new cap in place, the eagles will have tons of cap room to work with. They are currently at 41,000,000. Assuming they sign rookies and a few other players, i dont see them going below 20,000,000 available. Take in mind that this is McNabbs last year. He is going to make around 10,000,000 this year. If we trade him or let him go at the end of the season, its still 10,000,000 off the books next year. Were probably looking at 30,000,000 to 40,000,000 in cap space next year which will be a great place to be in when FA rolls around.

Yeah, we had about this much cap space last year, and the year before, and the year before that…

I’m not complaining about the Eagles, I’m just pointing out this is how they go about their business.

You would think that but we only had 5 million i cap space last year. The Bucs had the highest cap space at 21,000,000. Having around 30,000,000 with a team already full of talent like ours will let us make some impressive moves.

I'm pretty sure

We had more than 5 million to start the offseason last year.

Tell me how the Eagles had $5 million of cap space to start the offseason then proceeded to sign Stacy Andrews to a contract that had a cap figure of $5.8 mill in the first year.

Then to follow that up they signed other guys like Leonard Weaver and Sean Jones.

by Smitty2K3 on Mar 19, 2010 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions

and Maclin, McCoy, and the rest of the rookies.

Maybe you’re talking about something else, but the Eagles had more than $5 million in cap space to open the 2009 offseason.

by Smitty2K3 on Mar 19, 2010 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I never said they had 5 million at the start of the offseason. They had 5 million at the start of the regular season after all of the offseason signings.

No, you didn’t say it, but you definitely implied it, and you didn’t say anything to indicate that you meant that amount was at the start of the regular season.

Haha

Thanks Yom.

BTW… andy, I don’t get why you’re even talking about having $5 mill to start the regular season last year. How does that matter?

In you’re little paragraph above, you’re talking about the Eagles saving money now and setting themselves up well for next year “when FA rolls around.”

Were probably looking at 30,000,000 to 40,000,000 in cap space next year which will be a great place to be in when FA rolls around.

So what was your point in saying they had 5 mill in cap space?

I’m not following your logic.

Well...

I think Kolb, if starting, might want a tad bit of a raise…

Well he'll want an extension... (and need one since hes RFA next year)

and if he’s going to start, then it’ll have to include a raise.

by Team Serbia on Mar 19, 2010 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

He’s not going to be a RFA next year.

Also

He’ll want an extension for some stability. If he gets injured, he may never get paid.

by Team Serbia on Mar 19, 2010 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions

He will have to make a few starts before he gets a raise.

Thats what incentives in contracts are though. If he gets the playing time he will get extra money for the certain incentives. Technically not a raise but he will get more money. The eagles better resign him this year though.

by andyb on Mar 19, 2010 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Its money already spent technically....

but the eagles would have taken a cap hit with the Prorated bonuses of some of the guys they released.

I’m unsure of the figure, but if we had a “cap” that would probably be a few million taken off our cap space.

by Smallbugger on Mar 19, 2010 2:00 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah thats true but thats the bonus to having a year with no cap in place.

I didnt like the idea at first but this year with no cap in place really benefitted the eagles financially and left a lot of money for improving the team in the future. I hate to say it but i guess banner does know what he’s doing.
