What About Number #81??

I know I may be risking getting banned from BGN, but hear me out.  I know we reacquired Hank Baskett (#81 for the colts) and I think it was a decent move. In Baskett, we get a big sized receiver that knows our system. But my mind occasionally races at the possibility of picking up "The Other #81" who has the size and also knows our system. Nobody here can doubt that our best season in recent memory came when we had ""The Other #81" catching McNabb's missiles.  "The Other #81" had a better season thank Baskett last year, in my opinion is more of a threat than Baskett, and could fit back in as a 3rd or 4th wr.  Just think of a receiving corps with Djax, Maclin, Avant, Celek and "The Other #81".  I believe the time spent in Buffalo has humbled "The Other #81" so no need to worry about his Diva attitude, also the guy knows that his days as an NFL receiver are numbered, so he will want to get with and contribute to a team who has a great chance at winning a SB. What do you guys think??

Two words...

No Thanks.

We have enough WR already and the last thing I need is for him to come back with this “they’ve always needed me” or “of course they want me back” attitude.

If that was the only option he got

who knows if he would be humble enough to even take that offer, plus he’d be asking for WAY too much to be our 3rd

C'mon.....

He could be a back up to Avant or if (when) we get rid of Curtis he can serve as the 4th wr. I agree we may have enough WR’s, but aside from Avant, DJax, and Maclin how many of them can say they are “proven” Eagles recievers?? Chad Hall has potential I will give him that, but the guy hasnt played since 07, Jordan Norwood played last year and wasnt impressive and Dobson Collins?? (Who Dat?? No seriously…Who Dat??) I think we could benefit from “The Other #81” ’s veteran status as a RESPECTED (on the field) WR that still draws double coverage!!

There's only one "other #81" for me

And that’s Jason Avant. Owens had his chance in Philly. There’s no place here for him now, humbled or not.

by Bob_Q on Mar 18, 2010 3:21 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Owens still wants to be a starter and he wouldn’t get that chance here in Philly.

by The Legend on Mar 18, 2010 3:22 PM EDT reply actions

No.

He won’t go somewhere to be a 3rd or 4th receiver. And he would be a 4th here. He still has value, but not to us. The Eagles don’t need him. I love our receiving corps.

by NOLACuse on Mar 18, 2010 3:27 PM EDT reply actions

Definitely not

And he wants AT LEAST 5 million dollars? Puh-leeze. Not a chance – we need to invest in other areas – our receivers (finally) are perfect the way they stand now.

by RucanorX on Mar 18, 2010 3:31 PM EDT reply actions

TO can't be a #3 or 4 WR.

You’re #3/4/5 WR’s need to contribute with special teams in some way, shape, or form. TO will not and probably cannot do that.

There’s about a -95% chance that we bring him back.

Not gonna happen.

He wouldn't have to buy a house! From what I hear, he couldn't sell the one he had

in Moorestown. Maybe he can still do sit ups in his lawn, and play catch with those guys on power99.

He would not be happy coming off the bench, as Avant, Maclin, and Jackson are all better. To be honest, Curtis would fit a slot role better than TO. He needs to retire and work on soap operas or something.

Wow, that was almost insightful JIBTA

TO would have to play the slot though, he doesn’t have the outside speed that he needs anymore. I actually don’t mind him anymore, and I think he’ll get a job in Denver when Marshall leaves. Either that or he might end up in Seattle or Chicago.

I’m still shocked after what Jackson has done that people still think we need a big WR.

They call me The Professor.

by Whodie126 on Mar 18, 2010 4:57 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, I don't get it

I don’t know if you mean big in name or size, but both bug me. Especially size.

Does size help in WRs? Certainly. Does that mean you have to be at least 6’3" 210 lbs to be a great WR? No. Maclin is great, DeSean Jackson is a superstar. We don’t need huge WRs, we need good ones. I’d take DeSean and Maclin over Ramses Barden, Reggie Williams, Matt Jones, Kassim Osgood, or those other huge WRs any day.

Also, as a note, I do think TO has been humbled (his last year in Dallas he was actually well behaved, the media blew one of his comments way out of proportion) but I don’t ever want to see him in Eagle green again. Plus, we don’t need him. We’ve got three good WRs, we don’t need an old washed up one.

No TO but...

I think a lot of people sometimes overrate our receivers.. DeSean and Maclin both had extremely good seasons, especially for their respective ages, but there were many times last season where we had a very hard time moving the ball. We did have a “quick strike” big play offense but that can be shut down as seen towards the end of last year. We all expect Maclin to improve this season, but nothing is ever certain in this league.

by BwH_ on Mar 18, 2010 10:19 PM EDT reply actions

Both played injured/missed games last season

And like you said, both are vey young. Jackson is what he is, a burner whose either gonna make a 60 yard TD or be too covered to do anything but Maclin has the ability to be an all-around solid WR. And then we have big Avant over the middle, i think we have reason to be excited.
