Around SBN: VIDEO: Austin Rivers' Buzzer Beater Finishes Off UNC

Posting Guidelines: Something I think BGN should consider.

Like many Eagles fans, after finding out they had acquired Darryl Tapp from the Seahawks, I was interested in learning more about him. Somebody here linked to FieldGulls.com, the Seahawks blog on SBNation.

The first thing that struck me was the number of comments that fanshot had. At the time, it had about 800 in the first 3 hours. Right now, it has nearly 1800 posts in it. That's more than almost anything on BGN besides gameday threads, and this is the middle of March.

Secondly, the people that posted seemed really knowledgeable. Obviously, not everyone contributed immensely to the conversation, but these fans were definitely smarter than the average ESPN user.

After poking around the site for a few days, I noticed that a lot of the site was the same way. Really well written fanposts. They didn't have fanposts ending with "75 words 75 words 75 words". They correctly used fanshots. Everyone was being respectful of one another. There weren't any arguments that devolved into name calling. There weren't racists, homophobic, or otherwise offensive posts.

They really run a damn fine site over there, and I think a lot of it has to do with the rules they enforce. They have a fanpost listing their rules for posting. It actually gets enforced, too.

The rules are listed here: http://www.fieldgulls.com/2009/11/16/1160431/field-gulls-mod-enforced-rules-and (I listed them at the bottom of this fanpost for you to check out)

Maybe it's just me, maybe it's not, but I feel as though the quality of the content and the maturity level of the discussion has dropped significantly in recent weeks. I've definitely been guilty of participating in a few arguments myself, but (not trying to justify it) most of the time I was responding to someone else's hostility. I feel as though agreeing upon a set of rules we will abide by and enforce as a community will lead to a significant increase in the quality of the content, and will make this place friendlier for all who visit. Plus, I'm all for making Eagles fans appear less hostile to others.

I just think that if a set of rules like the ones enforced at FieldGulls.com would make everyone's stay here a little nicer. (Note: I don't think we need to use their rules verbatim, but nearly all of them should remain)

Additionally, if it weren't obvious, I'd like to mention that I personally have no power to implement or enforce these rules. As far as I know, the only two people with privileges to do so would be Jason B and Bob_Q. However, I feel strongly that doing this would have a tremendously positive effect on the quality of content and overall community in the long-term. I'm making this fanpost as a suggestion and to see how other people feel about the subject. If there is a strong response, hopefully those in charge would consider implementing these guidelines.

Field Gulls Mod-enforced Rules and Standards

The following is the final set of rules and regulations decided upon by the community of Field Gulls.

Zero Tolerance

Abuse of the following rules will lead to immediate banning, possibly without chance of reinstatement.

Sexism, Racism or other Bigotry: MTV raised you right. You know better than to use "gay" in the pejorative. Cull the sexist, hate-filled slang from your vocabulary or expect an immediate ban.

Name Calling: Except to call Scruffy "Lance". He likes that. This has never been a problem here, but for the sake of comprehensiveness, let it be known that name calling of any kind will not be tolerated.

Spam: One and you're done.

Hoaxes: False headlines used to capture attention will be rewarded with a deletion of the post and a banning. Misreported news of any kind is not allowed.

Standards

Mods will enforce standards through a three strike system: correction, warning and finally banning. Mods will not punish innocent errors, but habitual abuse.

Links: A link must be provided for all news and quoted material.

Spelling and Grammar: The readers of Field Gulls are Field Gulls. Therefore you are held to basic editorial standards. Commenters must attempt proper spelling and grammar within the best of their ability. Many internet browsers have a spell check included.

Subject Line: The subject line is the small box above the body of a comment. SBN software requires this box be used. Use it.

Reply: The reply button is below and to the right of a posted comment. It's a wonderful organization and communication tool. Use it.

Site Etiquette

Site etiquette is to be enforced at the moderators discretion. It is a catch all for behavior not explicitly covered by the above rules that can be abusive to the site, those who contribute to the site and its readers.

Belligerence, Fault finding and Trollish behavior: Rudeness can be couched in the nicest words and divisive and destructive commenting can be framed as civil discussion. Persistent negative comments, thread-jacking, fault finding, petty correction, stubborn ignorance or illogic, meanness, calls to perfection, refusal to drop an argument, unfounded claims of prejudice and other acts of self-importance will be dealt with on a case by case basis.

Respect the moderators.

Never root against the Seahawks Eagles.

Fantasy discussion is for the weekly fantasy post: Fantasy comments outside of the post may be met with sarcasm.

Rosterbation: Fanposts containing logical, supported and novel roster moves are accepted, even endorsed. Fanposts that propose farfetched trades, signings, schemes or that endorse exhausted topics (ie Michael Vick, Mike Holmgren, the officiating of Super Bowl XL, etc) are not allowed.

Chat Speak: Acceptable in moderation, but "+1", "LOL" and "roflcopter" should not be stand alone comments.

It would be much more pleasant here without the name calling (except towards obvious trolls). We could also do without pointless posts like the Madden one.

i liked the online franchise post idea.

i’m considering making a fanpost to throw the gauntlet. get an actual online franchise going so we can survive through baseball season.

Agreed but the actual content of the post was pointless

And it seems like everyone is on Xbox :(

Also, another thing I want to comment about is how quickly conversations get turned into name calling. A mere disagreement over a topic will cause one person to curse / name call which ignites a similar response from the other person. Then we’ll have like 10 other people join in and talk about how stupid person x is. It is okay to agree to disagree.

I voted yes

but I’m not sure actually, I’m all for a liberal posting regulative, so I think these would do as guidelines, but shouldn’t be rules and the first couple of times a person breaks them, he should be informed and then if he continues to break them deliberately then there could be talks of repercussion

by T-rade on Mar 18, 2010 4:56 AM EDT reply actions

Screw it

Too many rules and regulations. I figure a few guidelines should satisfy.
I agree with responsible and informative fan posts. I agree with banning spammers. I agree with outlawing racial and bigot comments.
But, we want a free blog here. Free speech. Who should be the standard and judge of whats proper and whats not? The guidelines need to be loose, not be all end all. 8th Texan is a prime example of what was wrong. The madden post while seemingly pointless, got a lot of hits and some positive feedback. But the above standards would sonisder it a bad post. I personally didn’t like it, but I ain’t ready to kick them off for it either.
All we can do is hope people use their best judgement when making posts, even though some of them won’t. But if you start instituting stringent rules, you will find this place lonely and empty more often then not, and that is in itself a bad thing. I would rather take this opportunity to help average and below average Eagle fans become better informed, which in turn will produce better posts for all to enjoy. The bad apples will just have to be dealt with as they pop up.

I agree

What keeps this site so interesting is the inflammatory, pejorative, and attacking remarks. I like the loose environment where if I disagree with someone I can say they’re stupid and be done with it. If somebody has a serious problem with a post they can flag it, but I like to think we’re mature enough to deal with a lot of that stuff or just suck it up. I wouldn’t change this site at all.

No doubt that there has been an immense increase in shitty fanposts and comments over the last year. I’m all for some kind of regulation in regard to the fanposts, but it will be Jason who has to moderate them as of now. Do you want to do that Jason?

I guess this is just the price to pay when a blog becomes so popular.

At first I thought this was a little much Yoj ...

… but then I read the actual rules, and it’s 95% common-sense stuff, most of which has been advocated over here at one time or another.

I don’t have a problem with the rules themselves, and I don’t have a problem with making BGN a place where you have to earn your stripes, so to speak. It would definitely be cool if we all used the functions the right way so the site was easier to navigate, but the concerns about making it a group-think and discouraging potential contributors from posting are legitimate.

I’m all for anything that raises the bar around here, and I think you’re right about the past few weeks. The one thing I don’t worry about, though, is BGN running completely off the rails. It seems like those who need correcting get called out pretty quickly … in other words, over time, the group is rather self-policing.

And that’s good … because if I had one real concern about imposing these rules, it would be who’s gonna do the moderating and when. That stuff is a pain in the butt, and if you cover things 23-7, it’ll be the one hour you skip when a flame war erupts.

Anyway, good to circulate those rules. I do a couple things they mentioned from time to time, and now I won’t.

personally,

i know this is a blog for people to converse about the eagles, post interesting/relevant topics, and stay updated on the eagles, but i actually vote no on rules. i think it makes the site more fun with the arguments, but then again i could be an idiot. a good argument makes lots of comments → makes me read the post, and i’m sure it does other people too. guidelines, maybe. rules, no. it’d take all the fun out of it. plus, i learn a thing or two from all this.

I actually like the way JasonB runs this site.

From what I see, most of the bloggers are college students (myself included). The flexibility on this site lets us bloggers have a normal conversation without worrying about being banned (besides racism, sexism, ect.) common sense. Plus if there is no one posting crappy fanposts during the offseason, who are we gonna harass to keep from being bored?

I don’t know that we need posting guidelines. People just should not be assholes on the internet, and then if they are it’s a question of whether they should be banned or not.

If you don’t like what someone says, you can either

1) Ignore it.
2) Rebut it in a rational manner w/o personal attacks.

There’s a time for personal attacks and insults, and that is Dallas week.

Within BGN and the Eagles fan community there’s lots of divergence of opinion, but it doesn’t mean someone is a nitwit if they support Kolb or a moron if they support McNabb. We all ultimately want the same thing.

by BrianS on Mar 18, 2010 10:19 AM EDT reply actions

Man, what did I miss with this 8th Texan guy?

I don’t remember seeing that at all.

As for the rules, I kind of like their intent honestly. Cleaning up the posts and removing some of the ad hominem stuff would probably be beneficial. Arguments can be fun, I agree, but I can’t be the only one who gets tired of

u fucking faggot… you prabably cant get layed so u jus com here an jerk off to mcnabb. i kno so much more about football you pussy bitch… jaeger bombs!

I agree with many others here though, I appreciate the freedom this blog allows, so any rules should be more like guidelines. I don’t think first time offenders other than spammers should be banned.

At first I thought this was a really good idea

But as previously stated, the strictness of the Field Gulls guidelines would put a muzzle on many of our regular posters. I love the site the way it is and if we, the regular posters, make sure to not let arguments or name-calling get out of hand, we can continue to be an enjoyable and informative blog. There’s no shame in using that Flag button people! It’s a lot easier than typing a response anyway.

Ultimately though, this is Jason’s site and he has the final say on things, so he’ll make the call.

by Bob_Q on Mar 18, 2010 12:10 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

Agreed

Plus it is really tedious to have to monitor every individual comment especially if it isn’t part of you main daily gig.

I would just recommend the flag thing if you think something is inappropriate but be respectful of Jason and Bob’s time as well. It is a sports blog and not a forum discussing really advanced/difficult concepts.

I love the idea of a few of these rules

but if you read it most of the arguments resolve themselves. ive argued with many people on this board and then left a post and completely agreed with them in the next one. its just people that obviously cross the line. all of us cross the line once in a while. ive argued with yom, igglegreen, wild eagle, and we both called eachother dumbasses and whatnot. but when i see that they put up a post or comment i dont think “hey there is that jackass” its more of a “oooo look a new fan post to read wonder if ill agree”

It’s not so much the capitalization that bugs me, it’s the “u r the only 1 who talks liek dis” people that can’t be bothered to type entire words. I’m not sure if it bothers anyone else, but that’s me.

I really could care less about punctuation and capitalization as long as it’s readable. However, the text message speak is ridiculous. There’s only a few people that do it, but when they do, it looks like Shawn Andrews Twitter feed.

Attacks are not just a way of arguing, if they’re all you say, they pretty much prove that you have no argument, and they say a lot against your character as well.
I thought that in a disagreement you tried to prove your point – right, guess I’m old-fashioned or something.

no i totally agree im saying

a lot of people use attacks as punctuation. like they say a statistic and say " see how wrong you are dumbass" does that make sense? if they all are you say then ya its completely not arguing i guess i should have been more specific

is at peace with the fact that i am a DICK.... i am good at it.... it is what i do.... it defines who i am.... will i be hated?? most definitely... do i care?? hell no...

I voted yes

for some of the rules.

I think Field Gulls might be taking a few of the things too far… like banning someone for calling another person a name. Sometimes if you’re being a “jackass” or an “idiot” I’ll be sure to let you know. And I wouldn’t have any hard feelings if you’d do the same to me… if I deserve it.

But I definitely agree with a lot of the other rules… like using proper spelling and grammar. This doesn’t have to be enforced to a T, but we all speak English… so at least make an attempt to speak (type) it properly.

A lot of the other rules are basically common sense… so like FieldGulls said… use it.

My question to the rules… What’s the big deal with using the subject line?

And meh, I don’t care if the rules get added or not, but I’m just going to say this: sometimes rules are better at one place than it is at another place.

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.
McNabb's Chamionship game and Super Bowl career: 129/225, 57.3 completion percentage, 1426 yards, 6.3 YPA, 9 touchdowns, 9 interceptions, 72.9 QB rating, 1-5

by Imp on Mar 18, 2010 3:18 PM EDT reply actions

On the old SBN, subject lines weren’t optional. I remember back in the day that bugged the hell out of me, lol.

Anyway, they’ve since upgraded all the SBN sites and it’s not mandatory to put a subject on each comment. However, I guess they have kept it mandatory there for whatever reason O.o

I didn’t notice until now, but I just looked at their site and every comment has a subject line.

I am the people's troll :3™

by yomjoseki on Mar 18, 2010 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Subject lines being mandatory seems often redundant. In the daily “Links” threads, which are somewhat “open threads” it’s helpful to have a subject line since we might bounce back and forth among several topics. (Westbrook, Andrews, Mike Bell, etc, in today’s thread).

But if a thread is called “Eagles Trade McNabb to Rams”, well, that’s pretty much the subject.

I think BGN occasionally could use a bit more decorum, and that it times there’s a little too much EMB-style douchebaggery here of late, but I’m against the over-legislation of a site that’s supposed to be fun.

by BrianS on Mar 18, 2010 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

From the Lookout Landing posting guidelines:

Always use the subject line when making a comment. Even if it’s one word that leads into your post. There are a few reasons for this, among them being that it makes comments easy to hide if necessary (while at work, some people don’t want some of the more…shall we say, expressive images on their monitors for all to see), that it allows for easier moderation of comments, and that it just looks better.

LL is one of the most professional, informative, and entertaining blogs on SBN. Their guidelines are more strict than the FieldGulls ones, and, I believe, makes for one of the best and most readable atmospheres on SBN.

I’m not a Mariners fan, but I still occasionally read posts there. I believe guidelines can do nothing but good.

Rules make things run efficiently

nobody likes rules until they see them in action, and it’s amazing how even the most profane will respect a well organized approach…it usually just makes sense

I’m all for the rules…as it’s been noted, most of them are just common sense…

Is it really hard to be respectful, even if you don’t agree, and to check your spelling if you’re posting publicly?

I like the freedom of the site I think we police ourselves fairly well, it is the internet after all.

I do believe the excessive fanposts and lack of proper fanshots usage needs to be addressed though. If you share information let us know where you got it, if someone already posted this information add yours to their post. Simple stuff like that would help clear up the site. I hate caring on the same argument in 6 different threads.

caring = carrying …

that’s another thing that annoys me. When people spell incorrectly or use horrid grammar they claim “it’s just the internet” while I agree you are trying to prove a point and nothing says “I don’t know what I’m talking about” like bad grammar. How am I supposed to value your opinion when you don’t even value it enough to make it clear?

I’ve grown up using computers, and I’m a fairly efficient typist, and it actually takes longer for me to type “r u goin 2 the game 2nite?” than it does to type “Are you going to the game tonight?”.

However, I do understand that’s not the case for most people. It doesn’t bother me on a personal level to read it, I just feel as though it detracts from the legitimacy of the information we share. Does that make sense?

A simple solution...

I am more worried about Eagles fans being portrayed as illiterate than mean-spirited. Hell, where I come from (Philadelphia), “mean-spirited” is another way to say “home-field advantage.” However, there is no excuse for bad grammar.

As far as the language is concerned, a few spicy metaphors hit the spot now and then. If I were to call Andy Reid a “morbidly obese charlatan who has piles of lukewarm fecal matter in his occipital cortex,” that has less of a visceral impact than, “Andy Reid is a fat fucking idiot with shit for brains.” Both are good, but sometimes you are in the mood for caviar…sometimes meat and potatoes.

...But if he pulls the rug on his quarterback, Reid must do it knowing that he let McNabb down more than McNabb ever let him down.

Example of acceptable cursing:

Example of what not to say:
You’re fucking stupid if you think this trade was a good idea!

Also, it doesn’t matter so much what the individual says. If someone else made the topic and I disagreed with it, I’d still support the change since the vast majority clearly favors the changes. However, final decision is on Jason B and I’m not even sure he’s going to address the topic. Unless, of course, he’s just addressing it by ignoring it and continuing to operate the site as he has.

I have to disagree with you on one point, yomjo. It says pretty cleary that “ballsacks” would not be acceptable, possibly under two seperate clauses:

Name Calling: Except to call Scruffy “Lance”. He likes that. This has never been a problem here, but for the sake of comprehensiveness, let it be known that name calling of any kind will not be tolerated.

That is if you are saying that JIBTA is a ballsack, for instance.

Also:

Sexism, Racism or other Bigotry: MTV raised you right. You know better than to use “gay” in the pejorative. Cull the sexist, hate-filled slang from your vocabulary or expect an immediate ban.

I believe it could fall under “hate-filed slang”, for example, saying that rpp 134 sucks ballsack; sweaty ballsack.

Now both of those references were used as jokes, don’t report me please. Personally, I also like the loose atmosphere and I think that the posts here are, for the most part, of decent quality. Especially when its not the offseason and we have stuff to write about.
