The Bad Contract Dump

I need some help, but I think we've seen exactly what the FO wants to do. For every bad contract they are trying to restructure, get what they can, or just flat release players.

Usually the team would take a cap hit on the guaranteed money paid to a player (what ever is left in a prorated amount left is), but they can do it this off season with no penalty.

Stacy Andrews - restructured

Shawn Andrews - released

Brian Westbrook - released (sad to see him go, but bad contract for his ability now)

Reggie Brown - trade for probably the most we could get for him

Chris Clemons - traded

Will Witherspoon - released

It seems the eagles are taking the situation at hand to set-up the team's future and clear-up cap space not for this season, but to be prepared to handle a new CBA and cap in 2011.

Is there any other bad contracts on our books? We can probably assume those guys are being shopped. The random timing of Shawn's release tells me the team tried to shop him, but found no takers...

An interesting look at the 2009 salaries... I couldn't find an interactive 2010 Eagles salary yet, but we can probably assume guys are at or around the same amounts...

http://content.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/salaries/teamdetail.aspx?year=2009&team=24&order=CapValue+desc

So who is left that we might try to dump now?
Trevor Laws
Kevin Curtis
Both seem overpaid for their value to the team.

The QB situation following this logic - Because all 3 end at the end of this season, the Eagles are not concerned with having to dump a bad contract with them. This theory will be proven true if our QB(s) are traded for 2011 picks or we try to compile 2011 picks in anticipation of a rookie salary scale to allow us even better cap manage in the future.

So who else has a contract going beyond 2010 we might want to dump?

So guys that stand out

 Kevin Curtis WR 4,500,000

Darren Howard DE 4,506,000

Michael Vick QB 5,250,000

ok Laws is cheap enough, guess we put big incentives in his contract he will never meet

 Trevor Laws DT 832,500

I like Curtis when he’s healthy, but he’s buried behind D-Jack and Mac, with Avant having a pretty defined role.

Still…there’s no salary cap. If White Lightning’s healthy, I’m fine with them keeping him around.

by BrianS on Mar 17, 2010 2:26 PM EDT reply actions

He'll be cut

I don’t know the exact numbers, but I’m pretty sure his salary is wayyy too much for the role he plays or would play.

by Smitty2K3 on Mar 17, 2010 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

Eagles cap has his base salary at $3.4 mil with a $1 mil roster bonus along with other bonuses.

So they have his cap number at $4.8.

Either way… it’s too much.

by Smitty2K3 on Mar 17, 2010 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep

and $5.7 million next year. Its been fun, and I definitely remember the game where he has almost 300 yards receiving and 2/3 touchdowns against the Lions. I remember screaming White Lightning the whole game haha. But yea, no doubt he gets cut.

by Team Serbia on Mar 17, 2010 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

that was a fun game to watch.

I especially loved it because I had him on my fantasy team. haha.

…. along with Westbrooks 110 yards rushing, 111 yards receiving, and 3 touchdowns.

Let’s just say I won that week.

Unrelated but...

The Saints are bringing in Fargas for a look, pretty good sign that they don’t plan to match Bell’s offer from us. Not that I expected them too, but its good to see the Saints affirming that.

Yikes

They better change their header image quick on their main page.

They have pictures of Shawn Andrews, Samuel, McNabb, and Dawkins.

Two out of the four are gone and McNabb looks like he might be on the way out too.

I’m more interested in the contract numbers and breakdown and he keeps that up to date and it’s extremely well done.

Whoaaaa die. Easy man. I was just sayin'...

I’ve been visiting that website for awhile. I agree… Whoever does it does a great job.

I just noticed the header again though… thought it was kinda ironic that he created that image and now a couple years later 1/2 the guys are gone. Kinda ironic I thought.

I was wondering why he was whispering.

No but seriously, it’s all good. Just wanted to make sure you understood I wasn’t bashing on the site. I have, as Shawn Andrews would say, “Respekt” for that site.

The next question

is who needs to be paid?

Desean Jackson
Kevin Kolb
Stewart Bradley

Who else?

by Smitty2K3 on Mar 17, 2010 2:48 PM EDT reply actions

Are they getting rid of all these “bad contract” because they want to save money?

Or because they want to set themselves up well for a new cap in the future?

Or because they want to make a major move or two this offseason?

Or because they want to set themselves up to pay their own?

Or all of the above?

by Smitty2K3 on Mar 17, 2010 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think they’re doing anything out of the ordinary.

I am the people's troll :3™

by yomjoseki on Mar 17, 2010 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Ehh

I don’t think Reggie Brown gets traded if there was a cap (no one would want his contract) and I don’t think they release Witherspoon if there was a cap.

But I agree that they’re not doing anything weird. They’re all smart moves… I’m just wondering if they’re doing it for a reason? Like to trade McNabb and extend Kolb or if they’re doing it for other reasons.

by Smitty2K3 on Mar 17, 2010 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

If this were a capped year, the only difference regarding the Reggie Brown trade would’ve been that the Eagles took a cap hit from releasing him. It wouldn’t have affected the Bucs decision at all.

i think DJax is still in his rookie contract

The Eagles WILL redeem themselves in the '10-'11 season, with a win at SuperBowl 45 in Dallas!

by antoniak on Mar 18, 2010 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions

I think every NFL player

in his 2nd year in the league is on his rookie contract.

But regardless he’s gonna wanna be paid soon. Most likely after this season.

by Smitty2K3 on Mar 18, 2010 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Curtis is a goner.

Laws isn’t going anywhere though. He signed a 4 year deal for less than $3M, and besides, he’s been in the league just 2 years. At least give him the standard 3-year judgment period before we start calling for his head.

by JimmyK on Mar 17, 2010 3:13 PM EDT reply actions

I think so to but then your receiver corps is headed by 5 year guys Jason Avant and Hank Baskett. I think Curtis at least makes it to camp.

They call me The Professor.

by Whodie126 on Mar 17, 2010 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

With how much Curtis is making, I don’t see how when I think Jackson and Maclin are clearly 1A and 1B. Plus, they just paid Avant and they’re going to want their money’s worth.

I am the people's troll :3™

by yomjoseki on Mar 17, 2010 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree it’s a lot to pay the man but I think he makes it to camp if he doesn’t get traded. I don’t see him being released we already paid him his 1 mil roster bonus so he’s making 3.4 for the year.

Is that really too much money to take into camp? If they can get a decent trade I say roll with it but I wouldn’t cut him before camp.

We have 2 receivers not named Curtis with significant NFL experience Avant/Baskett 4 years and then Jackson 2 years and Maclin 1 year although I think we all agree those are “the guys”.

Other then that we have Dobson Collins, Chad Hall, Jordan Norward.

They call me The Professor.

by Whodie126 on Mar 17, 2010 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Experience doesn’t matter a whole lot in this instance. Our top 3 are set. Is 4th and 5th receiver experience a huge deal? Is it worth $3.4 million? Doubt it.

I am the people's troll :3™

by yomjoseki on Mar 17, 2010 6:28 PM EDT up reply actions

good point but it’s not exactly an easy o to pick up and if Jackson/maclin get hurt I’d rather Curtis step in than some no name.

If they cut him next year, there could be cap hit consequences. If they do it now, they’re free and clear.

nope his contract is free of cap hits as of this year

besides If he gets us close to 10 sacks every year

That’s worth what he will make this year, not what he will make next year, then the number needs to jump up to 14.

                                                   tackles sacks FF
2009 Philadelphia Eagles 21 6.5 2
2008 Philadelphia Eagles 21 10.0 1

Okay so he underperformed last year but if he gets us back this year I think it’s worth the 4.5 mil.
