Shawn Andrews Released

According to Adam Schefter's Twitter feed, the Eagles have officially released Shawn Andrews. It hurts less after two years of hardly seeing him, but it's a sad end to his Eagles career which started out very promising. I was one of the few people holding out hope that he'd come back, but I guess I had misplaced hopes. I can't say I miss the guy, because he's apparently not the same guy he was in 2008. Now, I guess he'll have more time to get his Michael Phelps on.

Wow

I can’t say i’m not surprised. I thought the FO would be willing to give him one more shot. Its too bad, he was dominant while he was healthy. Guess he’s not progressing as much as they’d hoped.

alright....

now the offseason moves are starting to roll…can’t say we didnt see this coming.

"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

Interesting...

Well, at least it ends the speculation and uncertainty…

Although I liked Shawn I can’t say that it doesn’t surprise me either this is the season to get out of bad contracts. Also now we won’t have to hear people b*tch about him.

by The Legend on Mar 17, 2010 1:15 PM EDT reply actions

It's obvious

that the coaches saw something they didn’t like. Whether that be his physical condition, his attitude, his communication, his desire . . . whatever. I trust that for them to do this, we were never going to get Shawn back. If the guy can’t play with his brother and college teammate then he will never play. Imagine having a chance to literally play side by side with your bro and former teammate in the NFL? Such a waste of a football player.

Not a fan of it

But not going to lose any sleep over it either. I was supporter of giving him one last shot but that isn’t going to happen. Oh well, now for his replacement.

by macjack09 on Mar 17, 2010 1:17 PM EDT reply actions

Wow...

And I guess this also means there wasn’t any interest from other teams in trading for him. Not even a 7th? Not even a 7th next year? Good riddance, #73.

by JimmyK on Mar 17, 2010 1:20 PM EDT reply actions

Nobody was going to pay his contract when they knew they could sign him for probably $2M next year :/

Actually, we’d probably get a higher compensatory pick if someone signs him than we’d get from trading him.

No compensatory picks for players that were cut :(

They have to be UFA’s.

One more bad contract...

…is out the door. So who’s next on the chopping block? Its got to be Kevin Curtis right?

Let the beasting begin.

hope so

No doubt in my mind.

If we’re lucky we can snag a draft pick for him.

…yeah, right.

As for Shawn’s replacement… I wonder what sort of guards will be available on the 2nd day. Some people will probably want us to look at Iupati from Iowa, but he played LG in college and struggled mightily in the Senior Bowl when he moved over to RG. I think there will probably be decent value later on.

by ZorkNemesis on Mar 17, 2010 1:25 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah, we should be drafting a guard or two...

…but I bet this means MJG comes back as well. Won’t that be lovely.

by alcatraz0109 on Mar 17, 2010 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions

at least MJG wants to be good. right?

by Bleediots on Mar 17, 2010 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions

I was just looking up guys. John Jerry out of Ole’ Miss seems like a Reid kind of guy.

Let the beasting begin.

So much promise

just not enough drive… sad.

if iupati falls

we should take him. but he won’t fall. we’ll have to go get him. that wouldn’t be worth it.

Asamoah

Look him up. he’ll be there in the 2nd. Pair him with Pouncey. Game..set..match

fuck this

this is a horrible move .. lets just release our best interior lineman .. idiots .. sean healthy is a top 5 guard .. now my boy MJG needs to start or were fucked

JIBTA I think Shawns done period.

I think there only releasing him because he isnt going to return any time soon… BTW MJG is awful. Nick Cole will start at RG if we get a center.

Yeah Jibta

If he was planning on coming back healthy and ready to play, Then we keep him. This will pretty much signal the end of his career. It sucks, because he was probably the 2nd best G in the league when he played, but his heads not in it or his backs not cooperating. This move makes financial sense. I still had hope for this year, but the Eagles must have gotten some type of confirmation that he was done.

"some type of confirmation that he was done"

That was my first thought. Because otherwise, why now?

But getting out from under a contract that ran through 2015 for a guy who hasn’t played in two years can’t be underestimated. I’m sure they like Shawn Andrews the player but not Shawn Andrews the asset, if that makes any sense. It was right on the line of whether the risk/reward was worth it.

ehh

i dont like it .. and MJG is a beast .. fuck nick cole .. hes trash ..MJG never gets a chance ..

by jack is better than asante on Mar 17, 2010 10:50 PM EDT reply actions

I agree and disagree

I think MJG can be very good, but Cole is just as good or better in my opinion. I’d like to see them both play at times.

JIBTA

I respect your fervor, but you might be drunk. MJG is a beast in physical stature only. He’s gotten just as much chance to carve out a niche as Cole, and he gets PT.

I don’t have a problem bringing him back, but he’s not a beast. At least not in the games I watch, which is roughly … all of them.
