Around SBN: VIDEO: Austin Rivers' Buzzer Beater Finishes Off UNC

And we have our starting Left End...Daryl Tapp

So now we can save that 24th overall pick for a corner or Sean Weatherspoon. Tapp was traded for Chris Clemons and a 4th rounder in this years draft. He had 7 sacks in 07 and 5.5 in 2008, and Jim "I'm a fucking retard" Mora benched him but he got 2.5 sacks last yr. He has 8 forced fumbles over the last 4 yrs, he's on 25. I'm really excited, he was apparantly a beast at VA Tech, so lets be happy with today, we wanted something, and we got a back up RB and a starting LE in one day.

its unclear if he's getting an extension, he signed his restricted tender and then was rumored to be barred from Seahawks conditioning

because of the trade, I don’t know if he wanted to come here but he’s from Virginia so he was either an Eagle or Skins fan most likely. But I think this is a very good day, not trying to sound like Dave Spadaro but this is what we were loooking for plus we got rid of a terrible contract that belonged to a guy who wasn’t a fit for our system.

I like this move on the surface

as Clemons didn’t really provide all that much and Tapp had at least one year where he was highly regarded in Seattle. Can’t say I watched a ton of Seahawks games … this might not be an end-all solution, but it does what they’ve been doing all offseason: Fill needs so we’re not locked into any one need on draft weekend.

Bell

We signed him to an offer sheet, totally different from actually getting him. He was a RFA and the Saints signed him to the lowest tender, they CAN match it if they want and keep him, I don’t think they will but there was some saying sometime about counting chickens.

If the Bell offer doesn't get matched

Then we just got really scary on this team. Bell is no Westbrook for sure, but if he can be healthy for a full year it’ll be a huge help to both McCoy and Weaver. We locked up Avant, got a potential explosive player/cheap bust in Chad Hall, added a DE that sounds like he could be a beast, allowing us to focus on OL, DB, and LB in the early draft and go DE with late picks to potentially groom another great pass rusher. We could get more picks if we deal a QB before the draft; today is a good day for the Eagles.

I agree

Love this move, DE wasn’t our biggest need going into the draft and now it isn’t even a pressing one, gives us a chance to get that LB we need. Bell will be a great addition as well and we should get him, we offered something like triple what the Saints paid him this year.

Dude...

No, just no… Westbrook was great. I know I’ll never convince you of that but you should simply stop commenting on my posts about him if you feel so strongly about it. As far as Chad Hall goes, i did put up the possibility that he would be a bust, but I don’t think so. He’ll be a serviceable slot receiver. He’s a poor man’s Harvin. He’s got great KR potential and can play multiple positions on offense. I’m not gonna make any promises, but I’ll predict a few things:

(Conservative) Chad Hall makes the roster
(Bold) Finishes with a stat line looking something like this:

22 carries, 100 yds, 1 TD
29 receptions, 330 yards, 2 TDs
30 PRs, 390 yards, 1 TD
25 KRs 510 yards, 1 TD

Repeating what I said earlier…

Clemons ultimately did not live up to the 6 year deal the Eagles gave him, and Tapp is only 25. Tapp, like a lot of Seahawks, did not really adjust to changes brought by the new DC Gus Bradley, but the previous 2 seasons, he did have 12.5 sacks, 104 tackles, and 7 forced fumbles.

We’ve at least addressed the depth on the line and gotten younger. It’s not a large gamble. Considering Clemons was more of a project player that didn’t pan out, at least Tapp is a pure DE with starting experience (27 starts from 07-08 in John Marshall’s defense). He CAN start on the line. He hasn’t reached his ceiling, and his production will surely benefit from Cole on the other side.

As for the 4th we gave up, I’m okay with getting people into the depth chart who are young and have some talent, when you consider that Jaqua Parker is 31 and Darren Howard is 33. It’s not like when they used a 4th to get Lorenzo Booker, who hadn’t done anything in the NFL to that point. Tapp at least has a resume. The Eagles will get more 2nd/3rd day picks anyway, they always do. If there’s someone they want in the 4th, they’ll give up a late 2011 pick. Standard protocol.

by ZorkNemesis on Mar 16, 2010 7:30 PM EDT reply actions

I wouldnt say starting LDE yet..

This guys isnt very well known around the league. Hes actually smaller than trent cole at 6’1 270lbs. Whos to say that he is a big improvment over Juqua parker. If he can come in and do what Ray Edwards did with Ray Allen on the other side then im happy. If he cant do that then i consider it a waste of a draft pick. Parkers stats 2006: 6 sacks, 2007: 5 sacks, 2008: 5 sacks, 2009: 8 sacks. Unless Tapp can get 8+ sacks consistantly each season, is this really much of an upgrade? I know he’s younger and makes the depth chart look pretty but im gonna leave the jury out on this guy for now.

by andyb on Mar 16, 2010 7:34 PM EDT reply actions

Probably not a starting LDE right away, but he HAS started and only lost his spot because of a new DC in Seattle.

Just keep in mind Parker and Howard are only signed until the end of the 2011 season (which won’t even be played) and are above 30 in age. Howard certainly should be seeing the writing on the wall by now.

We’ll see where we’re at as the season winds down.

It makes me really curious about when the Eagles decide to start working on Kolb’s extension. Obviously they want to see him get some playing time first, but it’s risky to wait too long if a new CBA strikes. And if McNabb stays in Philadelphia, then I really don’t know what will happen. Kolb must know he’s in high demand by several teams.

by ZorkNemesis on Mar 16, 2010 7:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Just for reference, Rodgers was extended in November, and Romo was extended in October of that year (Romo had far more NFL experience at that point, of course).

by ZorkNemesis on Mar 16, 2010 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Kolb won’t extend unless he’s the starter by the end of this season.

Why would he? He could just force the Eagles into using their franchise tag on him, securing him a cool $18,000,000 or so. Then, in 2012, sign a long-term deal or be franchised again.

I am the people's troll :3™

by yomjoseki on Mar 16, 2010 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions

He's going to be a RFA no?

They can just tender him… and Kolb would be stupid not to extend whenever the Eagles offer it. No one is franchising him, and to decline a 5+ year contract that offers your money and stability with the risk that you could get injured is dumb. He’ll sign as soon as the Eagles show him the papers.

by Team Serbia on Mar 17, 2010 9:37 AM EDT up reply actions

He’ll be a 4 year player then. After 4 years, you’re an unrestricted free agent. Now, it’s possible we could re-sign McNabb and franchise Kolb, but I don’t see the Eagles spending that much to keep both. A decision will be made by 2011.

I am the people's troll :3™

by yomjoseki on Mar 17, 2010 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions

He’d be an idiot if he extended before becoming a starter! There’s no risk of injury when you’re not starting. Plus, he’d be undervaluing himself tremendously. He knows he’s going to get paid if he hangs in there. He has ZERO reason to extend before being named the starter.

I am the people's troll :3™

by yomjoseki on Mar 17, 2010 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions

So if the Eagles offer him a 5 year, $40 million contract

right now, saying he will be a starter 2011+, he’ll refuse it? He has stated on multiple occasions that he doesn’t want to leave Philly. Something doesn’t add up. There is no way he can undervalue himself. Whenever he gets a contract extension, it will before he is a starter.

If we trade Mcnabb, Kolb will be extended before the season. He will be stupid not to accept, as if he suffers an injury, he is never getting a payday.

If we keep Mcnabb for this last year, then Kolb gets extended either during the season, or next offseason before the season starts.

by Team Serbia on Mar 17, 2010 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Why would he take that contract?

Here’s his options if offered that contract:

A) Take it
B) Refuse it and get franchised, earning him $17M+ IMMEDIATELY.

His contract for one year would nearly match the likely guaranteed money in the proposed extension.

I am the people's troll :3™

by yomjoseki on Mar 17, 2010 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I would have to agree with Yomjo here

Unless he gets a starting QB’s contract offer from the Eagles, he has no incentive to extend. At worst he will get a 17 million dollar one year guarnteed offer or somebody else will pay him starter money and he can go there. Nobody ever “wants to leave” the city they are playing for, but will if that money is talking somewhere else.

I think a lockout is very possible.

Lockouts and strikes happen in pro sports and there hasn’t been much progress up to this point and there are A LOT of changes that need to be made in the system that won’t be easy to make. I put it at about 50/50 odds right now. However the pessimist in me says the 2011 season won’t happen, I usually end up pleasantly surprised though!

Football Outsiders: 13 QB Hits. Tied for 4th in the league.

19: A.Spencer, DAL; M.Kiwanuka, NYG
17: R.Edwards, MIN
14: A.Carter, WAS; M.Williams, HOU; A.Kampman, GB (in only nine games!)
13: A.Smith, HOU; D.Tapp, SEA; O.Umenyiora, NYG; W.Smith, NO
12: D.Ware, DAL; T.Cole, PHI; C.Matthews, GB; J.Allen, MIN; S.White, TB
11: K.Vanden Bosch, TEN; R.Mathis, IND; A.Brown, CHI; M.Lawson, SF

Put him in full time versus Right Tackles and opposite Trent Cole, then watch the sack total go up to the 8-10 range. He is also terrific against the run, top 5 according to PFF.

Nice, a past dump off is paying dividends. For those who are wary of Tapp, I think it’s a great move. I hope I’m not jinxing anything, but this kid can play and he hasn’t even hit his prime yet. I think this is a solid move from the FO getting rid of an underachieving player in Clemons and signing an underrated one in Tapp.

Tapp

will fit nicely in our Rotation but I wouldn’t crown him the starter just yet. I also don’t think this makes a huge impact on Draft. We probably did this because the FO realizes that the DE available at the end of the first are not going to be that much better then the DE available in the 2nd. This probably has us take a player who slips to 15 on that shouldn’t have, or has us taking an O line at 24. Pouncey most likely, would be my guess.

However if tapp is named the starter we got all types of cool slogans we can use.
