Burgess a Candidate to Return to Eagles?

One player already made a return to the city he once played in this week in WR Hank Baskett, and another could soon be coming back to Philadelphia to play with the Eagles. Derrick Burgess, who was selected by the Birds in the 3rd round of the 2001 NFL Draft, played this past season as a member of the Patriots and prior to that spent 4 years with the Raiders, but is now a free agent and potentially looking to rejoin his former employer. Because the Eagles have been mentioned among the teams looking hard for a Defensive End this offseason (they’ve already considered top-tier guys like Julius Peppers and Aaron Kampman), Burgess–who can also perform at the Outside Linebacker spot–is certainly a candidate to return for another stint in midnight green.

In fact, if the organization does take action and seriously consider bringing back the veteran defender, it wouldn’t be the first time they’ve done so in the past year. It was confirmed last August that the Eagles had made a trade offer to the Raiders in hopes of acquiring him; instead, New England was able to swing a deal for him. Nevertheless, it is clear the team remains in a bit of a connection with him, and despite his age (31) and injury history, seems to be a viable possibility as an upcoming free agent addition. Besides, it’s not as if the team has never used older players in a rotation with younger ones that could be obtained via the Draft; simply recall recent defensive schemes that have combined the likes of Juqua Parker, Darren Howard, Jason Babin, and Chris Clemons with players such as Victor Abiamiri and Trent Cole.

A 9-year member of the league, Burgess (pictured) still possesses a sense of explosiveness off the defensive line. In ‘09 with the Patriots, he compiled 35 tackles and 5 sacks in 6 starts as a Linebacker and pass rusher. In his tenure with Oakland, the South California native notched an impressive 38.5 sacks in 4 years, while earning a pair of Pro-Bowl appearances…and with the Eagles, he managed to record only 8.5 QB take-downs, but was a dangerous d-lineman and special teams contributor when healthy.

While there continue to be rumors spread that the team has interest in restricted free agent Ray Edwards of the Vikings, Burgess might just draw some consideration from the front office, especially with the approach the club has taken thus far in the offseason (players have been signed who have had a past of injuries but have potential to succeed and/or have a connection with the team from previous years). As the free agency period progresses, updates on the possible situation will surely be released when necessary.

If we don’t get the DE we want in the draft and he is still available I could see it happening.

Eagles FO

We do a great job at keeping in touch with former players. At least it seems like we have one of the highest resigning rates in the league. Off the top of my head I can think of Trotter, Baskett, Feeley, etc.

"That's what I love so much about this team. We have some warriors here. We have some guys who go out there and fight. That's the best thing about this team. No matter what happens, we just keep fighting. You have to love that."

jp is alright...

i’m personally tired of this “rotating LDE” concept. i’m not sure if there is any validity of the rumors that the eagles are going after edwards from minnesota, but i may not mind at this point.

LETS DO IT!

The Eagles WILL redeem themselves in the '10-'11 season, with a win at SuperBowl 45 in Dallas!

no, I dont want edwards at all...

He benefitted from playing next to the Fatass twins, and Jarad Allen while going against a 2nd string OT or Flonzell adams who can hardly move due to age/fatness.

Well, I guess, maybe...

But at this point I’d much rather have a real 3-down stud on the other side of the line than a slightly better rotation guy. We’re decently okay with Juqua, and if we’re really not in love with anybody in the draft or don’t swing a big trade, I guess he’d be okay.

But it doesn’t excite me. If we don’t get a big upgrade at DE, we’d better bring in a damn good safety and a damn good LB. And we need another Corner, while we’re at it.

I'm on board witht his

One yhear deal with a low signing. He can’t be worse than Babin/Clemons rotating in and out

E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!

by Joe_D on Mar 14, 2010 3:00 PM EDT reply actions

I think we're letting Babin walk

and I think Clemons is a pretty good situational rusher, he gets a pretty awesome burst off the line sometimes. He made plays down the stretch in his first year (he pressured Tavaris and Manning for Asante’s picks) and again last year showed that burst. I thought he was underused a bit, and he certainly isn’t the solution at the position, I just don’t mind him as a pure rusher on obvious pass plays.

I wouldn’t be unhappy with bringing Burgess back, that’s for sure.

My "t" and "y" buttons are messed up so don't bitch at me about misspelling, I'm just saying.

He was still worth every penny

For what he did during 44-6. Nasty stiff arm to Felix.

Consistent

I’m alright with this signing, if they decide to do it. Maybe a year or two year deal? He’s a veteran of 10 years, and by what I can tell by his stat’s, he’s a reliable player. Only twice in his career has he started 10 games or less- that’s not too bad. I think if we can bring him in, it will help to anchor our defensive rotation, putting less pressure on a rookie if we decide to go that route in the draft.

He didn’t want to play for us last year, but maybe a year in New England will help his desire to come back to Philly.

Here are his stat’s
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/stats?playerId=2611

It’s so simple to be wise. Just think of something stupid to say and then don’t say it.

no thanks

He looked old and was mostly ineffective in NE. I know he played out of position at OLB but my friend (a big Pats fan) gave him quite the negative review.

we need to stay young

and build for the future not look to the past, especially when the past is a 10 year vet, the wrong side of 30 and injury prone.

Cowboys suck.

by stinkypants on Mar 15, 2010 1:06 AM EDT reply actions

What I like about Burgess is that he is nasty.

Even Trotter said that people didn’t screw around with him because he could get pissed off pretty good. But he is a good person. Just nasty on the field. You know our defense needs some “dog” as they say! (And no Mike Vick comments plz :))

by Trade Kolb on Mar 15, 2010 5:28 AM EDT reply actions

Please no, he's done.

I prefer what we have!!! Unless he comes off the bench. I have been convinced by the others on this site, Ray Edwards is the way to go. Make it happen Andy.

I'm a Vikes fan too

It’s alway been Eagles………… Vikes (Always root for Philly first, but as soon as they’re done if Minnesota is still around I root for them) for me as a fan, and from what I’ve seen Edwards is exactly what a lot of people here claim, a product of a great supporting cast. That’s not to say he isn’t better than what we’ve got now, but he’s not worth a 1st rounder. Maybe a 2nd. I’d feel better about a 3rd though.

Thanks for that. I wanted to know what a Vikings fan thought. Like Clyde Simmons

was not quite Clyde after not having Reggie White on the other side. But Clyde was a beast though. But I don’t think he would argue that Reggie helped him a bit.

Question.

Who is that pictured above? Is that Derrick? Why is his numbers in the 40s?

I looked up his number. Apparently he wore 49 in training camp or something, but his number is listed as 53.
