Sharper/Atgowe (and an intro to me)
I just registered on SB Nation/BGN but I feel like I've stalked all of you for the better part of a year now. This is a great site and it's been cool to see all of your input, and now it's time I finally start taking part in this as well. I'd like to start by introducting myself...
I am a huge Eagles dork and check BGN (and any other Eagles news outlet I can find) probably 25-30 times a day while I'm at work and maybe even more when I'm not at work. I am a huge McNabb fan and he's always been my favorite athlete, but that doesn't mean I don't see his groundballs and it also doesn't mean I think he gives us the best chance to win. I would love him to win the SB for us, but I can see Kolb's potential as well, and I won't be upset with either at the helm. Beyond that, I probably won't get in any discussions about who should go and who should stay. 4th and 26 and 44-6 are two of my favorite games. 2008 was my favorite season as I felt like they finally had it all together. I was wrong but it was still a great ride (that kind of sums up just about every season for me though). I will watch every game in its entirety, even games like the 42-0 drubbing at the hands of the Sehawks during the 2005 catastrophe. Yes, I'm that cool. And my roomate at the time was a hardcore Giants fan. That was so much fun.
Anyway...
My question here is what you guys think of Darren Sharper versus O.J. Atogwe. I just realized that Sharper is still available, and while I know about his age, is there anything else that would really concern you if we picked him up? Marlin Jackson is not a sure bet to even be healthy (as you all know) let alone contribute. I'm not that well versed on Atogwe but it does look like he could help us. Are there any injury concerns with either of these two that you guys have heard of? These are two most appealing names to me right now, and I could see the Eagles going into the draft and not taking a safety early so that makes me nervous!

I just saw that Sharper may be landing with the Jets…I’ve got great timing…

I guarantee we don't get any more safeties other than through the draft
My "t" and "y" buttons are messed up so don't bitch at me about misspelling, I'm just saying.

+1,
we need a long term solution there, not a 1 or 2 year guy.
In Kolb we trust

there isn't a good chance at the eagles making a run at either of these guys
but i’d put sharper at 0%. simply because of his age.
this draft is deep with safeties, though so i think we address the position with a pick
that seahawks game was a hard pill to swallow.
i sat through the whole thing as well. my question is this. when are we going to bring mike mcmahon back for another look? that guy was a beast.

Yeah...
I live in Oregon so we have a lot of Seahawk fans here and I made a bet with one and that was embarrassing.
you made a bet with him?
With Mike McMahon as our QB? With Shaun Alexander having a record breaking year? Damn I thought my 2 TD’s down, 4th quarter bet that the Eagles would come back and beat the Rams in the playoffs in 2000 was ballsy.

Watch their signings.
The Eagles are positioning themselves to take whomever they’re most excited about when their number is called.
The Birds HATE need-based drafting. Would they love to have an upgrade at S over Demps/Harris/Jackson? Absolutely. But, with the Jackson signing and feelers out for trades they’re eliminating the need to draft a safety high.
All these moves and investigations about other players are designed to give them maximum flexibility leading into the draft. Whether or not we like that the Birds draft that way rather than finding a need and chasing it regradless of cost, it’s how they do it.

Yea, it’s usually drafting the best player available at that spot, and if they are targeting another player at a later/different spot then a trade usually goes down.
Ugh, I’m anxious for the days to go by quickly and see how the FO manages everything…

Yes, no doubt about that at all. Best case scenrio really. We can then load vick off for a 4th or so
Have Dmac(if he’s still here) start(as much as I dont want him too), then have Kolb be 2nd string, Groom Bradford for a year… Then in 2 years have Kolb and Bradford battle it out for Starting QB, loser still nets us a 1st or 2nd

with those two guys on the same roster, it's a wonder we didn't win it all that year.

I really wanted the Eagles to land Atogwe but after the signing of Jackson I highly doubt that they sign anymore safeties hopefully Jackson works out great for many years to come
I can see the
the Eagles drafting Taylor Mays, if he makes it to them. What else would they be looking for in the first round- interior OL, DE, LB, RB?
What else would they be looking for in the first round- interior OL, DE, LB, RB?
yes?
andy reid has never drafted a safety in the first round… he drafted michael lewis in the 2nd round in 2002, but that’s it. andy typically goes for lineman in the first two rounds. i wouldn’t be surprised if he goes OL, DL with his first two picks.
No, I think he's
in the “whatever it takes” mode, He doesnt draft for need, he drafts for BPA 90% of the time..
Like last year with Maclin, We didnt NEED a WR due to Curtis getting healthy, Djax blowing shit up and Avant doing what he does but we traded up to get great Value and we ended up needing him more than we could’ve ever imagined…
See I use to think that most of our hits were luck but then I realized we get pretty damn good people pulling the trigger on who to draft.

Good drafting AND coaching. Remember, guys like JaMarcus Russell and Darren McFadden were incredibly highly regarded coming out of school. I think coaching has an effect on the player as much as anything else, if not more.
I am the people's troll :3™
J russel sucks dick...
McFaddens nothing special either… But then again you picked 2 raiders players, there have been plenty of top 10 picks that have panned out.

What 1st pick from the Raiders has worked out in the last decade?
Darrius Heyward-Bey
Darren McFadden
JaMarcus Russell
Michael Huff is OK, I guess
Fabian Washington is a Raven
Robert Gallery? lol
Nnamdi Asomugha YAY!!!

Its because of how they draft...
maybe we should just start trading for there 1st rounder every year… Guarenteed top 10

The talent is there
Darrius Heyward-Bey was a four star out of high school. So was Jamarcus Russell. Darren McFadden was a five star.
GO CUSE, BLUE, AND EAGLES!
id be willing to bet if you put most of those players on an actual nfl team run by a human they would be pretty damn good

Eh
Andy’s had 24 picks in the first two rounds of the draft and his reputation for lineman (especially offensive lineman) is a little skewed:
DLineman-6 times (and I include Tackles and Ends): Laws, Abiamiri, Bunkley, Patterson, McDougle, Simon
WR- 5 times: Maclin, Jackson, Brown, Mitchell, Pinkston
OLineman- 3 (and one was the third pick, even though it was still 2nd round): Justice, Andrews, Bobby Williams
LB- 3: McCoy, Caver, Gardner
That’s it, other than that: 2CBs (Brown, Sheppard), 2 QBs (McNabb, Kolb), 1 RB (McCoy), 1SS (Lewis), 1 TE (Smith)
"EFF YOU, WE'RE WINNING ANYWAY!!!!!!" (Bye, Dawk)
in the first few rounds
drafting the best available player isn’t a bad gameplan. if that means neglecting positions of need (DE, LB, DB), then that’s a damn shame. hopefully one of two of the best available will also fill a need.
Eh, I think people take the BPA concept too literally. If two players get the same grade from the Eagles, they’ll draft the one from the position that helps the team. It’s not like every single player is ranked top to bottom. They’re kind of lumped together by grades, or tiers.
I am the people's troll :3™
exactly - and if the there is one last guy in said "tier" who also fills a need, and he's
just sitting there a few spots ahead, then they trade up for him.
because he fills a need and after him there is only guys at that position on a lower tier level.
So I think needs plays a huge part of it.
But also if there’s a guy who is on a higher teir level than any of your need guys, because all of them at that teir level have been drafted… then you would take the guy who isn’t a position of need but is at the highest grade level.
My "t" and "y" buttons are messed up so don't bitch at me about misspelling, I'm just saying.

I can't see us bringing in another safety
unless we draft one. More specifically to Sharper, why pay for two FA safeties with bad knees?
