Sheldon on the trading block?

I just finished watching ESPN First Take and on the Cover 2 segment Dan Pompei said that Sheldon Brown could be had for a 2nd or 3rd round pick since he is still not happy about Asante making more money. Although I am a little sceptical about the report because he said the Eagles put him on the block since we signed Marlin Jackson although I thought they made it clear that he will be playing Free Safety. If this is true what do you think Sheldon is worth a 2nd or 3rd?

I would be insulted if he was let go for 2nd. Here’s why:
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/180265-is-sheldon-brown-underrated-a-call-for-new-cornerback-statistics

Sheldon is tremendously undervalued by most fans.

I beg to differ

And here’s why:

Everyone remembers him for that play. Last year he was the only guy in the secondary that knew how to tackle

GO CUSE, BLUE, AND EAGLES!

by tanman5 on Mar 12, 2010 7:33 PM EST up reply actions

BLEGGGGHHHH.........

This would be a completely BAD thing to do regardless of wat pick he would draw. Sheldon was the Veteran that kept the ship afloat throughout Bradley goin down to the hanson fiasco, hes a lot more valuable then people realize and hes the true leader of our defense which has been on life support emotionally ever since the departure of Dawk, if Sheldon goes then our D from last year will look good compared 2 the new one we field, and i dont wanna hear people say Asante this and Asante that, all he does is get picks, besides that hes actually not that good at all.

by goldenbird09 on Mar 12, 2010 5:47 PM EST up reply actions

He is worth more to us then any other team he knows our system and the fans love him. Another team he’s just DB

by sowhatifitisasportste on Mar 12, 2010 7:09 PM EST up reply actions

I caught the tale end of this report on TV....

I tried to verify it on-line and couldn’t.

I like Sheldon, but for a 2nd? Its worth thinking about

by Smallbugger on Mar 12, 2010 3:14 PM EST reply actions

The Eagles aren’t going to trade a good player for less than what they’re worth because the player is unhappy with their contract. Ignore this Pompei guy, whoever he is.

by JimmyK on Mar 12, 2010 3:15 PM EST reply actions

Yeah i don't know about the idea of him being on the block

but if a team is desperate for some CB help….2nd rounder doesn’t sound too bad if it’s in the earlier half of the second round. Who knows, maybe we could trade him for a second and then draft a quality DB with that pick to replace him.

I know that and it seemed like Sheldon was happier at the end of the season.

Also I forgot to say if this is true I wouldn’t be surprised to see us take 2 corners in the draft like we did in 02’ or even if he stays but that could be because there are a couple that I really want.

I still don’t think there’s a great chance we’ll go CB crazy this draft, though.

by Joe_D on Mar 12, 2010 5:08 PM EST up reply actions

i disagree

i think it is a position that will be adressed but i dont think its our biggest need at this point.
HB to compliment McCoy
DE to compliment Cole
FS? depending on Jackson’s recovery
LB
I think all four of these are more pressing, considering we have 2 starters and ellis hobbs (depending on the injury) at corner.

by Q27 on Mar 12, 2010 7:01 PM EST up reply actions

Agreeed

DB is not a priority this year FS , OLB, and DE. we get 3 young starters for those 3 positions we’re good for a few years I think DB will be addressed with the 2011 draft.

by sowhatifitisasportste on Mar 12, 2010 7:11 PM EST up reply actions

for what it's worth (not to be an ass)

but FS is considered DB also

"EFF YOU, WE'RE WINNING ANYWAY!!!!!!" (Bye, Dawk)

by jalarsen1 on Mar 13, 2010 8:19 AM EST up reply actions

I think CB is more important then 3 of those 4 because it is a passing league now whether people want to admit it or not and we don’t know yet how Hobbs is going to be after his neck injury and how much longer he is going to be here and if Jackson doesn’t work out we can either move Sheldon to FS or have Demps or Macho start.

by The Legend on Mar 12, 2010 7:26 PM EST up reply actions

If we have a solid LDE to balance out the monster we have as cole, then opposing qb’s wouldn’t even have a chance to test our db’s =)

by notfromphilly on Mar 12, 2010 7:35 PM EST up reply actions

FS and LDE both apply to the pass game

i’m not all for moving sheldon to FS yet just because of how good of a corner he is.
i don’t consider demps or macho an answer at FS either. I consider them both experiments that shouldn’t be re-tested.
i agree that cb is something that needs to be addressed, but with the talent we have there it isnt as pressing as the other positions

by Q27 on Mar 12, 2010 11:50 PM EST up reply actions

I know FS and LDE both apply to the pass game

And if you look down a couple posts I say LDE is our biggest need.

As for FS I believe Marlin Jackson is going to workout but if he gets hurt I am comfortable with Demps or Macho(if they even have Macho practice at safety in TC) if we don’t draft a rookie because Demps was hurt at times last year and Macho was a rookie changing positions. Also Dick Jauron is thought of as the best DB coach in the league.

by The Legend on Mar 13, 2010 10:55 AM EST up reply actions

Not to mention

how many of us were really impressed at all with Hobbs on defense? He might be a good dime corner, or a reasonable nickel, but I don’t see the kid developing to anything more than that.

Hanson’s decline after his suspension should be cause for concern too. We basically have two quality depth guys, and two aging starters. We really need to get some young talent in here that has potential to start in a year or two

"EFF YOU, WE'RE WINNING ANYWAY!!!!!!" (Bye, Dawk)

I think

Center may be the biggest need

by soflaeagle on Mar 12, 2010 7:46 PM EST up reply actions

I think we will be fine with Nick Cole since he will have a full training camp under his belt practicing it again.

If we have a solid LDE to balance out the monster we have as cole, then opposing qb’s wouldn’t even have a chance to test our db’s =)

I think LDE is our biggest need

by The Legend on Mar 12, 2010 7:56 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with you twice in a row on this thread

some people (I think Tommy Lawlor included, if I remember right) were thinking that Cole should compete with Jackson for the job in last years training camp. That didn’t happen b/c of our RG issues, but I agree completely: I’m comfortable with Nick Cole at center, especially with the whole offseason to practice.

He’s a squat, big body, that really gives him good leverage in the middle of the line

They call me The Professor.

by Whodie126 on Mar 12, 2010 4:10 PM EST reply actions

He's not worth a 2nd rounder

I love Sheldon, I think he was our best corner last year (until the last few games of the season, post hamstring injury). He arguably had the best season of his career…

But the problem is he turns 31 in a week. A 31 year old corner is worse than a 33 year old quarterback. I don’t see any team giving up a 2nd round pick for him.

by Smitty2K3 on Mar 12, 2010 4:19 PM EST reply actions

Totally Agree............

But some of these guys above us think a offer of a 2nd for Sheldon is a slap in the face LOL, however I think it would be highway robbery if we could get a 2 for Sheldon. That being said i still would not want 2 do it, if he goes then our Defense has been completely overhauled, i dont like getting attached 2 players i like 2 root more for the team as a whole instead of individuals but i would at least like 2 see one of our best players from this decade at least finish with us.

I do, actually. I think it’s our biggest need.

I would say somebody to compliment Cole is more of a need at this point and our CBs took a hit last year due to injuries and suspension but I think it is 2nd or 3rd.

by The Legend on Mar 12, 2010 4:38 PM EST reply actions

Bye, Dawk :(

I too need to understand just why you think CB is our biggest need. We’ll obviously need to add a CB for depth sometime in the draft but “Biggest Need”? LDE, S, LB, C/OL help….. CB doesn’t crack top 3. Help me out, explain.

I think de opposite of cole is very very important, and then a solid starter for c (i’m sorry but if i have to see a repeat end of ‘09-’10 season with cole at c i’ll be disappointed), then s/lb/cb are fairly equal for me. just my opinion…

by notfromphilly on Mar 12, 2010 7:00 PM EST up reply actions

Cole will be a good center

not even just serviceable, he’ll be good

He was thrown in at the end of the season, but with minicamps and training camp…he and whichever QB will get on the same page and we’ll be fine.

Winston Justice was atrocious when thrown against the Giants, but with an offseason of work, he became a solid starter…hard to judge guys that get thrown into an awkward position with little practice.

yah...

i forget if it was espn or nfl network, but they were reporting about rutgers pro day. they specifically stated the eagles were there looking at mcCourty and how he’s a possible 1st or early 2nd rounder. also how he had a good combine workout.
I hope they don’t take him in the first and he’s there in the second. he’s basically the 3rd best CB coming out. I want Wilson in the 1st, but looks like he’ll be gone. I expect them to do something similiar to the year they drafted lito/brown.

Sheldon for a second

would be fair. He is a good coverage cornerback. He still makes some nice picks. But he is older and he does get burnt from time to time. he would add an instant improvement to a struggling secondary and he probably has 3 good years left him. I think that should be worth a second to anyone looking to acquire him.
That being said, i’d rather him because the CB’s behind him would require to much safety help to be even 2/3 as effective. Hanson is a nickel corner. Nothing more. he has never been good when he has had to play the outside spot. Hobbs is a question mark. he has had some success in the outside spot in NE, but he is still a relative unknown when it comes to this defense. Marlin Jackson (if we choose to use him here, should we trade Sheldon) is another unknown. Can’t tell shit about a player if he is never on the field. Macho, doesn’t have the seasoning or the speed to be an effective corner, hence why we unsuccessfully tried him at FS. Hopefully we keep Sheldon, but if we got a 2nd for him, I think that would be enough to quell my feelings on him leaving.
