With Reggie BRown gone(and Curtis maybe to follow)… I’m totally fine with bringing in Baskett as a 4th or 5th WR and special teams guy. HE knows the system and makes for good enough depth.

by JasonB on Mar 12, 2010 11:17 AM EST reply actions

meh I’d rather just draft someone and take a chance, I’m still amazed at the unwarranted love for Hank Baskett.

They could still do that. There’s certainly guarantee Hank makes the team.

by JasonB on Mar 12, 2010 11:29 AM EST up reply actions

If his major value is in special teams then experience is our system doesn’t really apply since April is now at the helm… He’s gonna have little or no offensive impact. We’re better off getting someone more dynamic in that roster spot…

At very least he provides offensive depth so we can focus more on defense during the draft

We have young starting WRs who need reps… Hank will be good on special teams and knows his role as a back-up

That's for sure.

Hank got ST’s MVP in 2007 I believe.

He has always been a solid ST’s player (which is what we’d need him for)

Not to mention, he’s not too shabby as a spot starter and/or role player.

This is a good signing.

I guess this pretty much guarantees Kevin Curtis is a goner.

After Reggie Brown was traded, I upgraded Curtis to about a 20% chance of sticking here, but that slim chance is probably all but gone now.

Yeah probably

I feel pretty good about this WR corps:

Now can we freaking work on fixing our Defense! lol I’m assuming all these moves in FA for offensive positions.. we will be focusing soley on the D in the draft (minus the Jackson signing) and Center. We still have a lot of depth and upgrading needed…

Isn’t a solution in the red zone
Isn’t can’t jump

Never said that

I don’t like what Baskett brings to the table offensively. It depends what they do in the draft but no I don’t like the idea of Baskett being the 4th WR on the depth chart in a team that throws 65%-68% of the time with two younger WRs.

FA options

Are pretty limited at this point because the Eagles did wait a bit in FA. If the Eagles draft a WR in the middle-rounds who might be a good depth guy, I don’t mind if Baskett is a 5th/6th WR option.

He just isn’t a guy I want to see lining up on the offensive formation alot and that is likely to happen because the Eagles run a fair amount of 4 WRs formation and Avant/Maclin/Jackson aren’t likely going to be healthy all year.

by MG77 on Mar 12, 2010 12:01 PM EST up reply actions

Ok

Well if we can draft someone that’s good enough to be the 4th WR then that’s what Baskett will be…

THE FIFTH WR.

by Smitty2K3 on Mar 12, 2010 12:06 PM EST up reply actions

That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. Here’s the complete list of FA WRs that have signed:

Antonio Bryant (he’d have been the highest paid WR on our team if we brought him in)
Charles Dillon
Arnaz Battle (not any better than Baskett)
Wallace Wright
Chris Chambers (haha nothx)
Antwaan Randle El
Brian Clark
Kassim Osgood
Terrence Cooper

That list is SO rich in talent!

I am the people's troll :3™

by yomjoseki on Mar 12, 2010 12:07 PM EST up reply actions

Oh yeah, and Burleson.

I am the people's troll :3™

by yomjoseki on Mar 12, 2010 12:10 PM EST up reply actions

Wright is a better special teams player than Baskett and this is the one time I wouldn’t have minded the Eagles spending some money on a veteran guy on a 1-year deal. They still might especially if they don’t draft a WR they like in the middle of the draft this year.

by MG77 on Mar 12, 2010 12:14 PM EST up reply actions

Even if they didn't "wait a bit in FA"...

Who would you have wanted them to sign?

Nate Burleson?
Antonio Bryant?
Lavernues Coles?

They all signed a contract that’s about 10 times the price of what they signed Baskett for.

by Smitty2K3 on Mar 12, 2010 12:08 PM EST up reply actions

Coles is still out there and probably won’t sign a rich contract like the other two…

But still… if we could get our choice of Coles or Baskett for the exact same price… I’d take Baskett.

by Smitty2K3 on Mar 12, 2010 12:11 PM EST up reply actions

Just last year Coles signed the exact same contract Bryant signed this year. He won’t make a ton of money this year, but if he signs somewhere, it won’t be for less than 2 million or so.

Just last year Coles signed the exact same contract Bryant signed this year.

Which is insane.

He won’t make a ton of money this year, but if he signs somewhere, it won’t be for less than 2 million or so.

True… it won’t be as much as Burleson or Bryant, but even 2mill isn’t worth it for him I don’t think.

by Smitty2K3 on Mar 12, 2010 12:15 PM EST up reply actions

Eagles made this move

Because Baskett is cheap (likely signed for the veteran minimum) and knows the system. Even on special teams, he doesn’t address the real issue of needing to figure out who is going to be the KR on this team unless they think Hobbs/Demps are the answer back there.

by MG77 on Mar 12, 2010 12:07 PM EST reply actions

They gave Hobbs a 1st round tender. That’s a good sign.

by JimmyK on Mar 12, 2010 12:09 PM EST up reply actions

I am the people's troll :3™

by yomjoseki on Mar 12, 2010 12:12 PM EST up reply actions

If Curtis was healthy and a legit No. 4

I could care less if they resigned Baskett. My bet is the Eagles are going to try to slide by with Baskett though as the No. 4 guy going into the season because they multiple other areas they need to address still.

If the Eagles top 3 WRs stay healthy, then it is largely a non-issue but that isn’t likely to happen either. Baskett flunked here before as a red-zone/slot WR and don’t want to see him lining up outside either.

by MG77 on Mar 12, 2010 12:20 PM EST reply actions

I don’t think he ever lined up in the slot… but that’s beside the point.

The point is you want your 4th/5th WR to be really solid in ST’s and be able to contribute in spells in the offense. That’s what he has always done here.

by Smitty2K3 on Mar 12, 2010 12:24 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly. 2007 wasn’t a great year for him, but he did pretty well for us in 2006 and 2008 (55 catches between the two years).

People also seem to forget he’s actually a pretty good blocker as far as wide receivers go.

by JimmyK on Mar 12, 2010 12:43 PM EST up reply actions

He was an ok blocker

That is something he does bring to the table but one of the things I really love about Avant. Jackson never blocks (and guess I don’t expect him too) and Maclin didn’t seem to show that kind of physical presence.

by MG77 on Mar 12, 2010 12:46 PM EST up reply actions

Pro Football focus

http://www.profootballfocus.com/by_position.php?tab=by_position&season=2009&pos=WR&stype=r&runpass=&teamid=-1&numsnaps=25&numgames=1

Has Jackson rated at 97th last year in the league in blocking at WR in 2009 and 80th in 2008. Avant was 11th and 9th respectively.

Jackson does a number of things well but blocking generally isn’t one of them and frankly I don’t know how much I want a guy with his size/build really throwing his body around.

by yomjoseki on Mar 12, 2010 2:47 PM EST up reply actions

On the blocking side

Yeah it is hard to make much rhyme or reason without knowing the full extent of the classification criteria but the results for WRs’ blocking have solid intra-observer reliability form a quick glance. Ratings may not be great and there may not be much of a difference between most WRs but the results do look pretty consistent from year-to-year but you would need to analyze the entire samples from 2007-09. I just don’t fell like importing into SAS on my laptop and running the numbers.

by MG77 on Mar 12, 2010 2:50 PM EST up reply actions

I would be more dubious on them

If they had the rating all over the board from year-to-year but I would be curious to learn a bit more about how they score blocking. Is a ‘pancake’ worth more pts than stay a temporary hold/shove?

by MG77 on Mar 12, 2010 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

that's cus they don't count

when he’s sheilding whoever’s got the ball as they run to the endzone….he’s always up everyone’s ass since he’s faster…

"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

by MG77 on Mar 12, 2010 12:45 PM EST up reply actions

if mcnabb (or kolb) can get the ball there, baskett can win jump balls in the end zone and hopefully be productive as a WR as well as on special teams.

Nope

Eagles tried this before with Baskett here and he generally wasn’t a good option for several reasons (limited vertical, very inconsistent hands, etc). It is also generally a pretty low pct success play with a moderate downside or risk (INT). If I recall right, I think some of the guys form STATS INC ran a number and the lop in the endzone while in the red zone was only successfully about 30-35% of the time (scoring a TD). That’s a pretty poor success rate.
