A look at the depth chart

I'm going to be looking at the depth chart and judgeing them on a scale of 1-5 the way it looks 1 being lowest and 5 being highest.

Star-divide

Quarterback

Donovan McNabb 4  A lot of people would be happy / indiffrent to see the McNabb Era end however if we were starting the SB tommrow this guy gives up the best chance to win.

Kevin Klob 3+ This guy has shown he has the arm to get it done. In the 2 games he started last year he threw for 300+ yards in both and aside from a horrible 3rd quarter vs NO Saints he was solid / good.

Running Back

LeSean McCoy 3+ A strong young kid who in college showed the ability to run between the tackles and in his first year showed he can be the dual threat that Andy Reid and his West Coast offense demands. Needs to be a bit more careful with the football but in his first season both as a starter and in the NFL he will only get better.

Eldra Buckley 2 A hard nosed runner showed all the talent in the world during the 09 Preseason however dissipated during the regular season.

Full Back

Lenoard Weaver 5 A guy who I associate with Mike Allstott and I feel is one of if not the most complete FB in the NFL today opened up a whole new dimension the the offense and can pick up a block like he was a guard.

Wide Receiver

DeSean Jackson 4+ Would be a 5 if he was only a few inches taller.

Jeremy Maclin 4+ I think at the end of next season he will be a 5

Jason Avant 4 At any point last year can you recall watching a game and saying to your TV "Come on man you need to catch those Jason"? I cant. He has been the definition of only getting better.

Left Tackle

Jason Peters 5 In the NFC East you face some of if not the meanest group of DE you will find anywhere and he made them look average at best. A force in both the run game and pass protection one of the best moves over the last 5 years.

Left Guard

Todd Herremans 4 Solid is an understatement when talking about this guy. He was the the rock that took our injury depleted offensive and made the left side the place where you didn't blitz.

Center

Jamal Jackson 3/5 Before his ACL went he would have been a 5 and was overlooked so much till he went down. History shows that it takes 2 years to come back. He went down in I think it was week 14 (Broncos game) Him being in the lineup next year is a long shot at best.

Nick Cole 3 His rating is low due to the offensive line being out of sync when he was in. I do however believe that practice makes perfect and if he is going to start and get the reps then that headache will go away.

Right Guard

Max Jean-Gilles 2 We need help a mountain of a man with the heart of a mouse.

Nick Cole 4 I have him as #2 due to him starting at center but at RG he is as good as 90% of of team's starters.

Right Tackle

Winston Justice 4 I am so happy to be able to rate him as high as I have. After his 1st start I had written him off. One of the many reasons I am not coaching. His biggest upside is he is young and only going to get better.

Tight End

Bert Celek 4 On behalf of all of us here at BGN thank you Bret for stepping up. Thank you for bring us back to the TE play that we haven't seen since Chad Lewis.

Cornelius Ingram 1++ I half to give you a one brother. I'm sorry I understand the torn ACL you suffered in college was not repaired correctly I understand it had to tear again to fix it right I understand that the coaches and owners knew it would tear again, and I forgive you. HOWEVER you need to come out like GANGBUSTERS next year give us the 2 TE sets that we have never run with too much success here in Philly. You owe the Philly Owners a lot.

Now on to the Defense

Free Saftey

Macho Harris 2 His play might improve next year, I wanted this kid to step up and prove everyone wrong ( I pull for the underdog) but he let me and Philly down.

Quintin Demps 2 True story if you you go to Wikipedia and look up shit the bed it has a picture of Demps. He was groomed under one of, if not the best Free Safeties the NFL has seen, had the starting job in his hand and pissed it away. A true disappointment in every part of his game starting with his work ethic.

Strong Saftey

Quintin Mikell 3 He made the Pro Bowl .... I don't think he deserved it but he did. 2 years ago he showed he was able to play the position with the best of them however after BDawk left his uninspiring play showed up. Solid tackler but when you look at your team and ask "Who's gona make a play?" don't look in his direction.

Marlin Jackson 2+ Injury prone unfamiliar with our system I'm putting him hear cause I need a back up. The Colts fan that showed up to BGN said he is a solid "Football Player" and a reliable tackler. If he is healthy we'll find a spot for him but, it would not surprise me to a 53 man roster without him on it.

Left Corner Back

Asante Samuel 3/4 Rember the Quintin Mikell question " Who's gona make a play" Asante will but on 3 & 10 who's got 2 thumbs and not make the tackle short of the first??? That's right THIS GUY. The football definition of riverboat I see him a big reason to why our defense was feast of famine last year.

Right Corner Back

Sheldon Brown 4 I would have loved to make him a 5, however he disseminated me last year not in his on the field play but with the departure of BDawk he was the man fans looked to when they thought about who's going to be the emotional leader of the team. Solid  in coverage, solid tackler, can and will lay the big hit Eagles fans have no reason but to love this guy.

Weakside Linebacker

Akeem Jordan 3+ Last year before he was hurt I saw him steeping up his game he found himself in the right place at the right time didn't lay the big hits but didn't miss tackles our D lost something when he went down last year. I do believe there are better out there but if he starts next year I wont be banging my head against a wall hoping to find a stud.

Strong Side Linebacker

Moise Fokou 2-4 All the talent in the would without a brain in his head to back it up. If he was on the field for 25% of the defensive pays it's a stretch but, still accounted for 75% of our personal fouls (now that's commitment). If he pulls his head out of his ass he can be successful if not he will man special teams till his contract runs out.

Chris Gocong 2+ The only reason you have a "+" is you have starting experience. To loose your job to a rookie who as stated before has his head up his ass you really need to have been lacking production.

Middle Linebacker

Stewart Bradly 4+ To all of us here from BGN come back soon Stew. I don't think any team missed any one player more then we missed Stewart Bradly.

Joe Mays 2+ I wanted you to be the success story of this year however you let me down loosing your job to the AX MAN aka the one legged wonder aka 54.

Right Defensive End

Trent Cole 5 He's a beast .... that's all that needs to be said

Left Defensive Tackle

Mike Patterson 4 Solid starter, solid tackler, solid against run solid against the pass what more needs to be said. O and he's young.

Right Defensive Tackle

Brodrick Bunkley 4 Solid Starter solid tackler solid again...... sound familiar?

Right Defensive End

Jaqua Parker 3 I think you've seen your last year as a starter.

Trever Laws 2+ For a 2nd round pick we all expected more granted you were injured last year but, you need to show the coaching staff something soon or you will find yourself on the unemployment line.

Jason Babin 3+ You came into training camp with fresh legs set the would on fire, came back to the position you played in college we all saw you and thought "this is this guy's 2nd chance he's not gona blow it" but you proved us wrong didn't you. The only good thing I can say is for only playing 10% of the downs you did have some production. If only the opposing teams started in 1st and 40 then we could have our pass rushing team in and you would get the start.

Now that we will look at team needs and the draft and how we can improve.

good post though

I liked reading it. Gocong has to go. He needs to be traded. I can see him doing well some where else. I still think it would be to hard to rate the players from last year. the team was hurt to bad. I think Babin has to go to . After preseason I though WOW and the texans let this guy walk . Now i know why. Trever Laws a 2 is being kind. Im hopin he pulls a winston justice and comes back kickin ass. If not he has to go.

Jackson will play FS and Macho will be second under him and a lot of times from the way it sounds Mikell might play some FS and Jackson some SS in certain sets

Would be a 5 if he was only a few inches taller.

Really … this is the benchmark for your rating system? I’d say it’s severely flawed.

His Hight

Limits how he can be used. Let me ask you a question Who would you rather throw a jump ball to Randy Moss or DeSean Jackson??

by sowhatifitisasportste on Mar 12, 2010 1:41 PM EST up reply actions

that’s ridiculous … does Nate Robinson’s height limit him in Basketball? You are making the assumption that because Randy Moss is taller he can jump higher to Jackson but you don’t know this for sure.

This fascination with tall receivers in amazing to me.

They call me The Professor.

by Whodie126 on Mar 12, 2010 1:49 PM EST up reply actions

I’d rather not throw jump balls at all.

by JimmyK on Mar 12, 2010 1:49 PM EST up reply actions

also very true.

They call me The Professor.

by Whodie126 on Mar 12, 2010 1:50 PM EST up reply actions

Why

There is a reason 30 of 32 teams have a jump ball in the corner of the endzone for a reason.

by sowhatifitisasportste on Mar 12, 2010 1:52 PM EST up reply actions

Edit

There is a reason 30 of 32 teams have a jump ball ito the corner of the endzone in their playbook.

by sowhatifitisasportste on Mar 12, 2010 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

that’s called a fade not a jump ball there is a BIG difference. The reason we don’t throw the fade has nothing to do with Jackson’s size but the fact that McNabb can’t throw it, he’s horrid at it.

But even still you are saying because we can’t run 1 play out of an NFL playbook a player loses a whole point. Your ratings are all opinion based so they are immediately flawed I was just pointing out that it’s a little ridiculous to dock a player a whole point because of his height.

They call me The Professor.

by Whodie126 on Mar 12, 2010 1:57 PM EST up reply actions

With all due respect

It’s not, physical stature has a lot to do with playing potential in the NFL are you going to take D Jackson at 5’10" 150 lbs soaking wet and play him at guard?

by sowhatifitisasportste on Mar 12, 2010 2:03 PM EST up reply actions

now your going to extremes because you are getting desperate.

They call me The Professor.

by Whodie126 on Mar 12, 2010 2:14 PM EST up reply actions

It’s extreme yes but it demonstrates how size and stature make up what you can and can’t do. I’m not saying he can not run the fade or that he can not get up and over someone to make the catch. In fact he is probably only as good as he is because of his size. Think about it he had to be faster then everyone else his entire career to make it work and that’s what makes him great.

by sowhatifitisasportste on Mar 12, 2010 2:21 PM EST up reply actions

meh his height doesn’t make him any less of a player, you will never convince me otherwise. Thankfully there are people like you who believe that because otherwise he never would have fallen as far in the draft and we probably wouldn’t have him on our team.

They call me The Professor.

by Whodie126 on Mar 12, 2010 2:31 PM EST up reply actions

Or

We would have taken him in the first instead of trading back and getting him in the 2nd =)

fair enough.

They call me The Professor.

by Whodie126 on Mar 12, 2010 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

His size obviously limits him

you’d be crazy to think otherwise. He had nice yardage but he only had 60ish receptions. That’s not a lot and I don’t think its going to improve that much. He has his speed working for him, but does anyone recall a tough catch he made? We can use him on the outside but I’d cringe seeing some LB wreck him over the middle.

I don’t mean to down play Desean but he’s our homerun hitter.

by Team Serbia on Mar 12, 2010 2:16 PM EST up reply actions

call me crazy then.

He had nice yardage but he only had 60ish receptions. That’s not a lot and I don’t think its going to improve that much.

This has nothing to do with his size … it’s called WCO. Receivers just don’t get many receptions the most under Reid is 77 (Curtis/Owens) so Jackson had 63 you don’t think he could get 14 more receptions next year year?

They call me The Professor.

by Whodie126 on Mar 12, 2010 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

That was Owens playing in 14 games

Taking the average, we would finish the season with 88 catches. I don’t see Jackson getting this many receptions. I can’t see him being a consistent threat to grab 6+ catches a game. Size doesn’t matter, whatever we want to believe. For every Steve Smith and Desean Jackson success, theres hundreds of failure stories. If size didn’t matter, Earl Boykins wouldn’t be the only player in the NBA under like 5’9.

by Team Serbia on Mar 12, 2010 3:12 PM EST up reply actions

AND

Hank Basket would be unemployed =(

by sowhatifitisasportste on Mar 12, 2010 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

And I'm not bashing Djax

He is going to be our weapon for the next while, and he just needs the ball in his hands to make something big happen. But even in my wildest dreams he would never pull off something like getting 20 receptions in a game as Brendon Marshall did. That’s all im trying to say.

by Team Serbia on Mar 12, 2010 3:35 PM EST up reply actions

meh
For every Steve Smith and Desean Jackson success, theres hundreds of failure stories.

And for every Randy Moss or Calvin Johnson there is a ton of Reggie Williams or a Charles Rogers.

What about Welker, Santana Moss, Santonio Holmes, Percy Harvin, Lee Evans, Steve Smith x2, Greg Jennings, Devery Henderson?

They call me The Professor.

by Whodie126 on Mar 12, 2010 4:00 PM EST up reply actions

Size matter

If you can’t get that, then thats fine. If size didn’t matter Hank Baskett wouldn’t have been in the league the past 5 years.

by Team Serbia on Mar 12, 2010 4:11 PM EST up reply actions

what? lol now you are just being ridiculous. 1 tall player remaining in the league is your closing argument?

Size does not matter within reason. A WR who is 6’5" is not automatically better than a player who is 5’10" or DeSean Jackson would have been cut last year and not Hank Baskett.

It’s okay I understand Eagles fans have always been obsessed with a tall receiver. It’s ridiculous but I understand the fascination.

They call me The Professor.

by Whodie126 on Mar 12, 2010 4:16 PM EST up reply actions

Nope. Size matters. Brendon Marshall, Randy Moss, Owens, Calvin Johnson, etc. all these good receivers who are tall and physical have ceilings that WAYYYYYYYYYY surpass Desean Jackson’s.

If Desean Jackon and all those players were to be on the exact same skill level, all those players would be better than him.

hey

Steve Smith (CAR) 5'9", Steve Largent 5'11"

Ike Bruce 6’0", Marvin Harrison, 6’0", Lance Alworth 6’0", Paul Warfield 6’0", Hines Ward 6’0", Rod Smith 6’0"

I agree that height can help or limit, but don’t say you need to be tall to be a top 5 WR.

I'm saying that

size matters. It’s not the be-all-end-all but it does matter. There are obviously exceptions were smaller guys have been dominant, but like I said take a 6’4 guy and a 5’11 guy with the same skill, the 6’4 guy would better. If Desean Jackson could be 6’4 with the same skills, hell yea id grow him.

by Team Serbia on Mar 13, 2010 12:42 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with you

But to say DeSean can’t be one of the great WRs because he’s short is ridiculous. I’m looking at you, JIBTA.

I'm not necessarily saying that

It is harder for him to do it, then lets say Calvin Johnson. He’ll need immense talent, which isn’t out of the question. I just felt like if the long ball wasn’t there, that he wouldn’t do much else. I’m particularly look at the three Dallas games.

all these good receivers who are tall and physical have ceilings that WAYYYYYYYYYY surpass Desean Jackson’s.

so the ceilings in there house have to be bigger cause they are taller this doesn’t make them better wideouts

You gave Ingram a 1 because he was injured and Bradley a 4 because why exactly?

They call me The Professor.

by Whodie126 on Mar 12, 2010 1:49 PM EST up reply actions

Let me ask you

What has Ingram done? He’s shown potential that’s why I gave him a ++ and Bradley got a 4 due to the fact that at the end of the 09 season ( I was deployed so all I did was look at football film and work) made our LB corps look good.

by sowhatifitisasportste on Mar 12, 2010 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

My point is more that they both finished the season out of action because of injuries. Now we are waiting to see what they can do when they get back on the field. Also I think you overrate Bradley based on his potential. I realize this is all subjective but I would have ranked them equally (3 or 1) because they’re in the same situation until they show something.

If my mother put on a helmet and shoulder pads and a uniform that wasn't the same as the one I was wearing, I'd run over her if she was in my way. And I love my mother. - Bo Jackson

I think

They both have shown something, Bradley has shown that he can not only compete at this level but excell and Ingram has shown to be a dominate force in college. I do have a hard on for good play from the MLB position

by sowhatifitisasportste on Mar 12, 2010 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

Bradley easily gets the edge because as you said he’s proven he can compete at this level but I also agree that his rating of a 4 is a little high. We all know Bradley is a good LB but he’s not quite elite yet although most of us myself included believe he can be.

he’s not a 4 though. if you are comparing avant to the rest of the wr’s in the league, there’s no way he gets that high of a rating.

I like Avant, he has done nothing but get better his whole time her…. and not dropping balls gets overlooked till they start slipping through your fingers

by sowhatifitisasportste on Mar 13, 2010 3:42 PM EST up reply actions

Desean a 4? Peters a 5?

What he is limited in size I think he makes up for in speed which is also a useful WR attribute that the taller ones (the ones you probably would give 5s to) don’t have and should make them 4s if you’re doing it the other way around. Jackson has shown over the last two years that he is among the elite WRs in the league, I think Maclin will show that too but isn’t quite there, he has to prove he won’t Reggie Brown on us.

Peters on the other hand is a solid player and played like a 5 most of the time. However he did get hurt and I feel early on in the season didn’t provide 5 protection.

How can you say this based on two starts? Neither team, the Saints or the Chiefs, were prepared for Kolb. The Saints intercepted him three times and weren’t even a top ten defense.

He is a good QB, but I don’t feel he is worth that rating. Teams were not prepared for him, they had barely seen him play. With an offseason to prepare for him the story will be different. I have faith in the EAGLES and I like Kolb but I feel that we will go downhill with him at the helm, for a little while atleast.

c'mon

you don’t prepare for a quarterback unless he runs like the wind…
yeah you can whatever you want, but the route progressions are the same, so the qb’s eyes will prety much be the same, anyways, look at the good qb’s, there is not way to ‘gameplan’ for a specific one, unless he’s a runner and maybe you leave a spy on him…

On the contrary.

A defense is prepared for their opponent. They know the looks a QB will give and how to get inside his head. If you don’t believe me ask Peyton Manning.

Sorry the Chiefs don't count.

You are saying he torched a 4-12 team, I have a six year old that could do that.

Erm, they took Tony Romo to OT.

Stop thinking that because the Chiefs are bad they don’t count as a quality win. We torched them while Romo nearly lost and Big Ben, Orton, and Jason Campbell did lose. The Raiders went 5-11 this year, and that record doesn’t suggest they were any good. Well, they beat us, right? If we’d won, would THAT have counted?

Anyone can torch a 3-13 team at home, right? Well, Drew Brees didn’t. Just sayin’.

Cruise control

Is the reason they lost to a 3-13 team and I think that is why we lost to the Raiders too. As for Orton, Campbell and Big homo, these guys aren’t that good.

Big Ben

Is who I meant. Sorry I should of put no helmet wearing, motorcycle wrecking, possible co-ed raping waste of a strong arm. My bad should have been more clear.

I think yomjo was saying

That while you said Romo “isn’t good” he actually is pretty good. I hate the guy, I’d prefer Mcnabb any day, but the guy is a good QB.
