I need your help

I am participating in a 2 round, 32 team, mock draft on the K.C. Chiefs SBNation blog, arrowheadpride.  While I do have some knowledge of the Eagles, it is mostly limited to what I have read or heard from the national media outlets.  As you may know the percieved needs of the national media and the local fan base can be miles apart.  From my limited research the primary needs I have identified would be DE/ OLB/ CB.

What I would ask from you is, what are your hopes in the upcoming 2 rounds of the draft?  The rules of my mock draft do not allow trades so it is straight picks.  I hope at the very least, I can spark some good conversation and I look forward to seeing how the true Eagles fans view their team, thanks for hearing me out.

My buest guess

as of right now would be Brandon Graham, but if either Maurkice Pouncey og Mike Iupati falls to us, i think they are higher on the Eagles draftboards

Agreed. It a really impressive amount of traffic they get, despite the Chiefs being a bad team (no offense).

None taken

We know we are bad, but we will get better

The Chiefs will take a defensive player with 3 out of their first 4 picks in 2010

The Chiefs were always the team I adopted back in the early-mid 90’s once the Eagles were mathematically eliminated. I was always a fan of Derrick Thomas and the great Christian Okoye.

…and he was maybe the most fun player to use in Tecmo Bowl.

by JimmyK on Mar 11, 2010 8:49 AM EST up reply actions

Yes he was, perhaps second to Bo Jackson.

He was a BEAST in tecmo bowl...

you could get a sack everytime you used him. christian okoye was good too

Seth Joyner

was the best defender in Tecmo Bowl

by philabronc53 on Mar 11, 2010 10:35 AM EST up reply actions

Disagree. He was great, but Joyner was the linebacker at the bottom of the screen, which put him at a disadvantage. Derrick Thomas was way faster, and he was also in the position where he could block FG’s and PAT’s. In the first one, Lawrence Taylor was by far the best.

by JimmyK on Mar 11, 2010 11:06 AM EST up reply actions

not that this is reflective of how good he was in real life.....

but brian bosworth was a monster in tecmo bowl.

Tecmo Bowl Throwback

Can’t wait for this personally.

The Eagles almost always take the best available player, no matter what the needs may be...

They draft Kevin Kolb in 2007 when there were other rather large needs, despite having a barely 30-year-old Donovan McNabb. They drafted Lito Sheppard and Sheldon Brown in the 1st and 2nd round when they already had one of the best CB tandems in the league in Troy Vincent and Bobby Taylor. Last year, they traded up a couple spots to grab Jeremy Maclin, when WR wasn’t really a need area.

So they’re really unpredictable. I’d would say that won’t change. They’ll take the best available player, as long as that player isn’t a QB (for now, barring a trade of one of our QB’s) or TE.

With that said, I’d rank their needs in the following order… CB, DE, Interior OL (ability to also play C preferred), LB, RB, S, OT, DT.

by JimmyK on Mar 11, 2010 8:39 AM EST reply actions

CB, LB, DE

That’s what I say needs wise… reality will probably be DL, LB, OL, WR, P, CB…

by Sparki on Mar 11, 2010 9:00 AM EST reply actions

For two rounds I would go

1. DE – need an impact player opposite Cole
2. LB – short of good linebackers. Too many bodies with question marks attached to them, not enough locked up slots.

If we were talking more rounds, I would go S and G / C in the third round, RB in the 4th, and from then on just go BPA among the various defense positions and offensive line. Might take a late flyer on a WR.

Officially contributing to worldwide confusion since 1997

by Rabbit T on Mar 11, 2010 9:09 AM EST reply actions

As much as I

would like they will not take an OLB mainly Sean Witherspoon in round 1. They possibly go LB in Rd 2. Depending whats on the board they will go DE, S, OL in round one.

Brandon Grahm, Everson Griffen<-(de), (DB)→Earl Thomas maybe TMays, Devin McCourtey, Amari Speivi, (OL)→Iupti(i think he stinks), Pounce(centers rarely go rd 1.).

Don’t be surprised to see them trade up with Seattle or back out of the first round for more picks. Teams are going to be hungry to “get their guy” and it feels like the Eagles like what they have and are just adding depth and looking for new guys to compete with the older players.

by Dmyth13 on Mar 11, 2010 10:00 AM EST reply actions

In that vein...

What positions are the Eagles getting long-in-the tooth in? I would not expect to add depth at a position where a player is old but still playing at a high level in the first two rounds, but if a player is old AND declining, a player who may need some development could be taken as high as 2nd round.

Thoughts?

QB possibly, if we trade Kolb. CB too, cornerbacks are solid but we’ll need to start finding their replacements. Like Amari Spievey…

oh rd 2

they will look closer at LB’s here. But don’t bet they actually pull the trigger. I think they go CB/S here unless Nate Allen, TMays, Chad Jones, McCourtey, Spievey, Cox, are not on the board.

OLB – Navarro, Gibson are probably the only two worth the contract here.

How about for Gocong straight up.

Hes a 3-4 guy in a 4-3 D, and you have a 4-3 guy who doesn’t fit in your 3-4 D. Its a win-win situation.

Question:

IF you ranked 3rd in NFL in sacks with 44, and ranked 9th in NFL in rushing defense how is DE the primary need? I know you guys got thrown on a ton. , but you rankd 16th (I believe) in passing D… is the secondary in need of an upgrade?

by fairmont on Mar 11, 2010 12:02 PM EST reply actions

Everybody around here says that Trent Cole needs a great pass rusher on the other side of him. Personally, I think our rotation was quite effective. However, it will be a need in the near future as most of those guys are on the oldish side (Juqua Parker had 8 sacks will be 32, Darren Howard had 6.5 but will be 34). So, a top-shelf DE would be great, but I think our more pressing need is in the secondary.

Sheldon Brown is 31, and Asante Samuel is 29. They’ve played extremely well for us, but the current fear is that Brown might be losing a step. Asante can’t tackle worth a crap, and sometimes he jumps routes, but 90% of the time he does fine. It’s the 10% we’re scared about. We need a top CB that can come in, learn the system, maybe return kickoffs, and be ready to start in 2011.

Quinten Mikell will be 30 at the start of the season, and we’re not sure if we have someone in place to replace him. Hell, we’re not even sure about free safety. We just brought in Marlin Jackson, but if he’s ineffective or unable to play, our backups (Macho Harris and Quintin Demps) did not play very well last year.

Plus our secondary depth is shot to hell. Marlin Jackson and Ellis Hobbs are both coming off of season ending surgeries.

by yomjoseki on Mar 11, 2010 12:18 PM EST up reply actions

We have

about 3 years to find us Coles replacement. We dont get good pressure w/o blitzing…ie getting Cole 1-1 with someone. So in theory we are looking for a guy to draw attention so he or Cole can get 1-1.

we were banged up in the secondary this year. And played musical chairs with our LB’s. Who didnt cover well. Our CB position needs depth but for the most part we need pressure to help them out.

by Dmyth13 on Mar 11, 2010 12:38 PM EST up reply actions

This was our biggest problem. We couldn’t get pressure with just the front 4. The Eagles are known to blitz alot but part of what makes their blitzing effective is the front 4 is still capable of getting pressure on its own. The Eagles have been trying to find a Left Defensive End ever since Kearse got cut and its just never worked out. Right now, Trent Cole gets double-teamed nearly every down and the other 3 d-linemen just go one on one with whoever is blocking them. We can’t take advantage of mis-matches and so in order to get pressure, we need to blitz. Blitzing would also be fine if we had better coverage from the safeties, which was just abysmal this year.

Let the beasting begin.

Pick Micah Johnson in the 2nd and your my hero…

No but really take the best safety available in the 1st and the best LB in the 2nd.

This is my preliminary board...Thoughts?

RD 1:
Nate Allen, FS, South Florida
Height: 6-0. Weight: 207.
85 tackles, 4picks, 4 pass deflections
You need a center fielder. It appears the Eagles safety play needs a serious upgrade and this guy is gonna be good. Good size good speed and a bit underrated. I honestly expect to see 3-4 safeties go in the first round this year and the Eagles would be very fortunate if he falls to them.

Also considering CBs Kyle Wilson, Boise State and Devin McCourty, Rutgers at this spot

RD 2:
Jermaine Cunningham, DE, Florida
Height: 6-3. Weight: 266
6sacks / 11 tackles for loss
The poll indicates that fans want a DE, but the numbers don’t SEEM to warrant a 1st rounder so this could be a kid who could start next year and develop into a serious DE.

Look if it is a realistic look you are looking for

Andy reid loves line men, both Def and Off. he also likes CB’s.

1st rd top 5(estimating who would be available): Dunlap, Pouncey, Iupati, Graham, Weatherspoon (any of these guys are likely if available)

2nd round top 5 : Nate Allen, Navarro Bowman, Perrish Cox, Greg Hardy, Asomoah or John Jerry. (I know that is six, but I am torn between those last 2)

That would be my best guess based upon previous drafts.
