Bunkley & Patterson medicore & Peters needs to move to RT?

So I bought this draft guide last night so I could study on the lower round draft picks since I am representing the Eagles for the mock draft over at Mocking The Draft and since I am a Eagles fan of course I was curious to see what they had to say about us. They said in the recent track record that drafting D-Jax, Maclin, and Shady the past two years has made up for drafting McDougle(agree), Shawn Andrews, and medicore DTs Brodrick Bunkley & Mike Patterson. In the most pressing needs part they said that although he is a strong run blocker Peters should be moved to RT because Demarcus Ware had his way with him.

Do you guys agree because I definately don't.

Considering that Ware was shut down 2 out of the three game (0 sacks against Eagles in regular season), I say “Ware beat Peters” is getting way too overblown.

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

How the hell are people saying Ware beat Peters?

Peters played extremely well in the regular season games and shut him out. I remember seeing several replays where he absolutely held on his own vs. Ware.

Yes...

And the funny thing is that it says it is the #1 rated draft guide. I didn’t buy it because of that the one that I usually get won’t come in it seems like before the mock draft and the page I read it had something that I have been saying so I thought it would be good.

by The Legend on Mar 10, 2010 4:08 PM EST up reply actions

Its the

number one draft guide in bumble f..k. It is also the only guide printed there. If those guys are mediocre and our LBs stink and our DB’s cant tackle, how are we in the top ten in rushing yards allowed in two consecutive years? It must be us FANS!!!!

Err, Peters was pretty solid.

Bunkley and Patterson don’t have great stat lines. They simply do their jobs. I think our linebacker corps made them look worse last year.

I am the people's troll :3™

Exactly

Bunk and Patterson are awesome at what they do, and that’s to shut down the inside run game. They don’t make a lot of tackles or get a lot of sacks but they push RBs outside and free up DEs and LBs to make the sacks.

bunkley

bunkley is an all pro but he doesnt get a ton of sacks cuz the eagles use him strictly for gap run responsibilitys

What an Idiot post.

Rumors were that DeMarcus Ware was moved to the other side during the first game of the season because Jason Peters was manhandling Ware. Think about that – the Cowgirls straight up moved their prized defense player to the other side.

For a few years Patterson & Bunkley were 2nd tear Pro-Bowl. This ended in the 2009 season. Before we address the interior D Line the Birds need to address DE.

by jslegacy on Mar 10, 2010 4:04 PM EST reply actions

We don’t need to address Bunk and Patt we probably need to find somebody to be a 4th DT since Laws has been a bust but it might be worth giving him one more year if we can’t trade him somewhere.

by The Legend on Mar 10, 2010 4:10 PM EST up reply actions

we ranked

9th in stopping the run last year. Who gets the credit if its not Bunk and Patt? Was it our AWESOME LB’s? Or maybe our FS and ASamuels? If Stew steps in healthy this year and we get a real FS no one will be questioning Bunk and Patt.

by Dmyth13 on Mar 11, 2010 7:31 AM EST up reply actions

Sure, they don’t get a lot of sacks but thats because of the 2-gap system that we play. Anyone who believes that Bunk and Patterson are mediocre needs to read this article. Right now.

just agreeing here but...

name me the guy who improved this past year from the year before.
I’d say Jordan early in the year but not after his injury.
Maybe T-Cole but he’s pretty even-keal (always giving max effort)

My "t" and "y" buttons are messed up so don't bitch at me about misspelling, I'm just saying.

by RadioheadbeatlesEagles on Mar 10, 2010 11:01 PM EST up reply actions

the article

says we were exploited in package situations. Teams were coming out on first down in spread sets. We send out Abriami and Howard to play DT to rush the passer. And then teams ran on us. It gave 3 teams who ran on us with success and said this was the major case. Dallas was one of those teams.

by Dmyth13 on Mar 11, 2010 7:47 AM EST up reply actions

that's part of our problem I think

we have a very ‘specialized’ defense where certain guys play certain packages, and we have few guys who are good for all three downs.

This gives an opposing offense free reign to audible to our weaknesses whenever they want.

We really need more versatile players. Our LB’s either stuff the run (Gocong, Trotter, Mays- kind of) or play the pass (Jordan, White)…our DTs/DEs are the same with Cole being really the only staple in the box that stays on the field

Half-truths

1. Eagles substitute Patterson out almost every chance they get on 3rd down in passing situations with Howard or Abrimari because he is pretty weak at at rushing the passer/collapsing the pocket.

2. Eagles are using relatively the same scheme (maybe McDermott did make some changes last year but he never said they were wholesale changes) that they have been using for years now. Eagles were able to generate pressure from the DT spot earlier this decade with Walker and Simon. It is more the personal than the scheme.

by MG77 on Mar 11, 2010 2:39 AM EST up reply actions

Actually with Walker and Simon they focused on getting to the QB and not the run and that is why we always had a bad run defense back then, if we were still doing that I am sure Bunk and Patt would have good sack totals.

bunkley is a monster id like to see someone bigger and better than patterson tho

by ieatcrayons on Mar 10, 2010 5:12 PM EST reply actions

Thank youuuuuuuu

Ive been saying this for so long now….bunkley is okkkk i guess…but patterson is soooo average…whens the last time you saw either of these two push the pocket back in the qb’s face??? they are extremely average on a good day

by Dnabb05 on Mar 10, 2010 6:12 PM EST reply actions

They aren’t asked to push the pocket into the QBs face.

by The Legend on Mar 10, 2010 6:54 PM EST up reply actions

This makes no sense

Of course they have to rush the passer on 1st/2nd downs when the opposing team passes. It isn’t uncommon that Patterson (and Bunkley sometimes) comes out on 3rd downs but neither of these guys does a good job of collapsing the pocket on passing downs.

by MG77 on Mar 10, 2010 9:41 PM EST up reply actions

no

They don’t rush the passer. Their responsibilities are to control their gap…let nothing through. This involves getting leverage on the O-lineman whereby they can quickly bounce to the side the ball is moving through. If the QB drops back to pass, they are either in a terrible position to push forward, or are still responsible for a delayed hand off through their gap

yea because thats all DT's need to do.

they are excellent run stoppers.

RIP Jim Johnson. You will truly be missed.

I wasn’t meaning to say that is all they need to do but that is what we ask ours to do

by The Legend on Mar 10, 2010 9:41 PM EST up reply actions

Nope

Better running offense have gashed this team the past 2 years. They are generally pretty solid but not ‘excellent.’

by MG77 on Mar 10, 2010 9:42 PM EST up reply actions

READ

the link JCC posted above. They are not asked to rush the passer or push the pocket. Its a 2 gap system and they are supposed to read and play the gaps in front of them.

by Dmyth13 on Mar 11, 2010 7:49 AM EST up reply actions

Patterson is overrated

Never understood why Patterson enjoys such a good reputation here. He gets fatigued easily, comes out on passing downs because he is horrible at pass rushing, and can get pushed back by leverage who can get leverage under him.

Doesn’t mean that Patterson is a competent DT but he isn’t nearly as good as the reputation he enjoys either in town.

by MG77 on Mar 10, 2010 9:34 PM EST reply actions

hey

i agree mg77 .. they think pattersons this all pro .. hes solid .. but bunkley is really good

by jack is better than asante on Mar 11, 2010 12:58 AM EST up reply actions

Bunkley

Seems like he is capable of dominating at the line of scrimmage at times on the interior (something Patterson is never able to do) but I would say he is ‘really good’ either. You hear this bunk about how JJ’s scheme is ‘to play the gap’ and not generate pressure but what the early part of this decade when JJ was the coordinator and the Eagles had a fair amount of sacks from the interior lineman? Eagles go get pressure from the DT spots the last 2 seasons on 3rd down but it is because they usually substitute Howard & Abrimari for Patterson & Bunkley.

People can make all the excuses they like but Patterson & Bunkley just generally aren’t good at collasping the pocket in passing situations on 1st & 2nd down. Frankly the Eagles haven’t had a DT who could consistency get pressure on the QB since Darwin Walker & Corey Simon were manning the middle in the early part of this decade. Is it also no coincidence this defense was also better too.

by MG77 on Mar 11, 2010 2:35 AM EST up reply actions

The 2-gap system

was incorporated in 2007-season. That explains, to some extend at least, the number of sacks from the DTs

Gary Cobb discussed Bunkley/Patterson a few weeks ago

He said it was partly the scheme but that these guys just weren’t good at collapsing the pocket and getting pressure on the QB. He didn’t see Patterson improving but Bunkley possibly could.

Usually I take what Cobb says with a grain of salt overall but he generally has a pretty good feel for line play and make some sound observations about the Eagles’ defense.
