Avant signing an insult to Desean Jackson

And the award for most ridiculous "reporting" on Philadelphia Eagles football goes to . . . Dennis Bakay.

Seriously, this is the most inane ridiculous BS I have ever read by a 'reporter'.  It really disturbs me when I see this level of stupidity coming from someone who is seemingly a professional . . . But just wanted to post it here and see what BGN thought.

Philadelphia Eagles spit in DeSean Jackson's face with Avant signing

By Dennis Bakay at 1:48 pm on Tuesday March 9, 2010

Once again, the Philadelphia Eagles are having a horrid start to the offseason.  In fact, this might be their worst offseason since 2005 just after losing the Super Bowl. Besides deactivating Terrell Owensin November, their biggest transaction was signing backup quarterback Mike McMahon. Will DeSean Jackson be cathcing balls somewhere else in the next few years? Photo: http://blog.pennlive.com/pasports/2008/09/large_deseanjackson.jpg

Yesterday they continued their antics by virtually spitting in DeSean Jackson's face. How you ask? By signing Jason Avant to a contract extension!

The message this basically sends to the fans and Jackson is that the Eagles are more concerned with locking up their middle-of-the-road players like Weaver and Avant on the cheap.  Why bother trying to lock up Jackson for a long-term deal when they might have to fork over $20 million in a bonus?

It's almost laughable how the Eagles have become a comedy of errors in Philadelphia.  They have the national media in their pocket so they think anybody critical of the organization is just a negative fan.  I'm certain to get hate mail over this article, but I'm more concerned with telling you like it is then telling you want you want to hear (i.e. national media types and Banner-Reid loyalists).

Let's make one thing clear here.  If Jackson doesn't get a contract extension he will hold out of camp and perhaps sit out the season.  The Howard Eskins of the world will tell you that ultimately the organization has the upperhand, but at what point do you have to stick to your principles at the risk of turning away your top tier talent?

Even if Jackson holds out and comes back, he'll be disgruntled.  And, let's take it further.  He may just decide to go sign somewhere else, with a team more committed to winning a championship.

Because face it, what have the Eagles done in the past two years to really try and get over the hump?

They are light years away from the likes of the Saints and Colts.  And, their mediocre defense has more holes than a block of swiss cheese.

However, don't expect things to get out of hand like they did with Owens, despite Drew Rosenhausrepresenting Jackson.

Google his name . . .

Just a joke of a writer. I wonder if he is paid for this rubbish. There are several BGN members that could out write him in a second.

What an old assortment of people. Layout on this website is terrible (block format looks like something circa ‘05-’06 and I really hope they didn’t pay any kind of money to develop this given that you could have done the same with Joomla and overseas developers for probably $3-4k.) and they don’t have any real place to put banner ads (even if they did get any).

Um

Does he understand what “free agent” means? This is incredible.

Wow.

Incredible isn't it?

And this was linked in the profootballtalk’s ‘Daily One Liners’. It was so bad I had to repost. I googled the guy and he is pretty much just a terrible writer of many things, and obviously knows NOTHING about NFL football.

Unreal

I wonder how much they pay this guy to write? Whatever it is he is drastically OVERPAID!

Philly2Philly

Saw this once or twice and man this is a ‘Grade A’ example of what existing media outlets put to in terms of incredibly poor content that passes for ‘journalism’ in new media.

There are plenty of great sources of news available on the internet (especially financial) but plenty of garbage too. Philly2Philly definitely is in the later.

by MG77 on Mar 10, 2010 1:29 PM EST reply actions

was just going to say the same thing

philly2philly is such a bootleg site. if you write for them you have to do anything for clicks. i just wish florio over at PFT would use better sources when rolling out the daily one liners. he’s just as responsible for perpetuating this kind of rubbish by exposing thousands of people to it again on PFT.

by PoorSports on Mar 10, 2010 1:33 PM EST up reply actions

My money says

That there unique users per month is really low and the click through rate on most articles is incredibly low. Poor layout and very little original content that is hard to generally find.

Well

If this guy get paid to write, than JIBTA can as well try his luck as a columnist for some local newspaper. Hell I would rather read JIBTA’s “fantastic” analysis of how Jake is better than Asante or how Reggie Brown is going to blossome to a ALL pro WR, than reading this kind of meaningless and useless crap

It’s interesting how this guy bypasses the fact that we phsically can’t negotiate with Jackson until after next year due to the current labor situation…. Silly details

I was thinking the same thing. He doesn’t even know the basic rules of the CBA.

by Whodie126 on Mar 10, 2010 5:23 PM EST up reply actions

Huh?

Why can’t the Eagles extend Jackson now? What uncapped year rule doesn’t allow that to happen?

by Greg M on Mar 10, 2010 7:21 PM EST up reply actions

Can’t deal until after his third year…

Hmmm.

Thought the rule was until after his second year — unless that got bumped to 3 years when the CBA expired and the uncapped year rules went into effect.

I could certainly be wrong, but that was my understanding of it from last year — once March 5th hit and the new league year started, he could be extended.

by Greg M on Mar 11, 2010 11:43 AM EST up reply actions

well your first post was correct… the uncapped year pushes back the time requirement from 2 to 3 years… that article you are referring to says nothing about having the ability to extend him now… all it says is that they’re going to approach the Eagles to begin discussions.

they can talk about it all they want, but it can’t be done until after the season is over.

This post is absolutely silly...

If anything, Desean should be feeling pretty good right now. If the FO was willing to open up the purse for a career slot guy, then he must know that his payday is coming fairly soon.

Plus, the author ignores the fact that Avant was a FA. Restricted, yes, but it was still possible to snag him from us. His re-signing was a more pressing need than Desean’s extension right now.

Foolish…

About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.

Holy Jesus,

this guy is dumb.

First off Avants getting like 18mil over 5 years, while thats good, he’s also produced for us for 3-4 years.

Secondly, Im sure were working on a contract with Desean, he will get paid but he’s got to wait his turn, I’m sure he understands this.

according to CBA rules, so this whole article is automatically garbage.

Oh yeah that's right, well we can "work on it" and "get one hammered out"

and in thory just not have him sign it till he’s able to therefore we bypass all the suspense.

Let’s speculate on DeSean’s contract extension (hopefully he re-signs)!

I’m guessing it’ll be a 6 year, $48 million extension with $27M guaranteed.

Of course, it will be a while before he signs, so there’s no accountability here!

This guy is an idiot

It’s like he’s typically a writer in the “Home & Garden” section of the newspaper/site, but because they downsized, his boss told him to take a crack at the NFL.

If this guy knew anything, he would know that:

A.) Jason Avant was a more pressing need right now.
B.) We can’t re-sign Jackson yet to an extension because of the current rules of the CBA.
C.) If we were to extend him this year, he would only be able to make 20% (I think this is the percentage) more than what he made the year before. Not worth it….

Jackson will get his extension… the fact that this guy doesn’t realize that is pure ignorance.

All your criticisms are valid

My favorite part was

They have the national media in their pocket so they think anybody critical of the organization is just a negative fan. I’m certain to get hate mail over this article, but I’m more concerned with telling you like it is then telling you want you want to hear (i.e. national media types and Banner-Reid loyalists).

So if you agree with him, you’re righteous yet persecuted as “a negative fan.”

If you disagree, you’re a Banner-Reid loyalist.

For the millionth time, this is why I BGN. Because we can disagree and all have well thought out points.
