Sal Pal: Seattle wants McNabb or Kolb

ESPN's Sal Paolantonio was a guest of Mike Missanelli on 97.5 the fanatic yesterday and had some interesting tidbits about the possible future of the Eagles QB situation. Specifically he said that the Seattle Seahawks have been calling the Eagles "non stop" about both Donovan McNabb & Kevin Kolb. Sal said that he now firmly believes that McNabb will be traded this offseason.

He also added that there is no interest from any team in trading for Michael Vick. Even ones with pretty uniforms.

The one thing Sal doesn't specify is whether the Eagles are actually entertaining any of these offers. Much like the report last week about the Rams' interest in McNabb this is only a big story if the Eagles are negotiating with the Seahawks. The fact that teams around the league would be interested in a pro bowl QB isn't exactly shocking news. If the Eagles were seriously talking deal... now there's a big story.

Of course, if they were talking deal the last thing the Eagles would want would be for that to get out.

How many times has Reid said he isn’t dealing Don???

The Eagles, like every other NFL franchise, are liars. Comments from Andy Reid or anyone else for that matter during the offseason should largely just be ignored.

You are right, it's all business

They wouldn’t be in the position they are in if they didn’t understand how to play the game.

as soon as the eagles admit publically that they are looking to trade mcnabb

his value goes down. everyone knows they are trying to trade vick (regardless of what they say publically) and we have gotten a few pretty lousy offers (considering we haven’t traded him yet).

so of course we need to say mcnabb will be back or else his value declines. right now, teams are trying to acquire the eagles starting QB, which has to carry more “value” than any of their backups, regardless of their perceived skill or ability. if we say mcnabb is on the trade block, his value goes down because teams know we don’t “need” mcnabb to be our starter any more, so they can ask less for him knowing the eagles plan on going with kolb.

so while it may not be true at all (i think they are entertaining offers and looking to deal him, but what do i know?), the eagles can’t say they are trying to trade him or they lose value out of it.

More to the point

How many times in the past three years has Palontonio said McNabb would be traded? 30? 40? Every week since mid-October 2005?

I dont know if im caught up in the hype

But im tired of seeing us doing good then falling apart. I know its not all #5’s fault but a change in QB may be what we need. Kolb looks like the future and looks bright so lets go that route….But if we were going to trade these two, who is more valuable? McNabb has the winning record but is getting old. Kolb has shown promise but is young..

by ssean2266 on Mar 10, 2010 12:59 PM EST reply actions

I think Kolb would actually have significantly better trade value.

by JimmyK on Mar 10, 2010 1:00 PM EST up reply actions

Me too

Younger guy who you can see how he plays this year and then lock him up long-term if needed.

by MG77 on Mar 10, 2010 1:19 PM EST up reply actions

agreed

but obviously the eagles aren’t looking to trade him unless they get a 1st (perhaps even more) in return.

so mcnabb stays “valuable” as long as the concept that he’s the starting QB next year for the eagles is perpetuated. kolb is still more valuable at this point, but mcnabb can still lose value if we talk about trading him publically.

by PoorSports on Mar 10, 2010 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

I hope that he (McNabb) gets traded to Seattle that would be great. I just hope its not Kolb because then the eagles are stuck with McNabb for many more years (he is getting old especially be eagle standards) and are going to have to draft a QB in this draft (probably will late anyways) but he might have to start sooner rather than later….

by Eaglesfan10 on Mar 10, 2010 1:00 PM EST reply actions

Christian Ponder

will be in the 2011 draft, and he is going to be the real deal. Even if they trade Kolb, that is not to say the Eagles would necessarily be stuck with McNabb for many more years..They can always bring in new blood.

Lifetime Noles fan here

I would like to see Ponder come to to Philly. Well, based on his senior year and if he can fully recover from shoulder surgery. He is a very dynamic QB. Reminds me of the young McNabb.

I will always be pulling for you #20.

As a Seahawks fan I'd take either one

I’d prefer McNabb because he can throw on the run and our o-line really sucks.

Maybe

McNabb still has some ability to scramble around in the pocket but it is greatly reduced.

by Generzal Zod on Mar 10, 2010 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

See, I think that hasn’t reduced that much. I think he still can move around in the pocket well. He’s not big threat to break off a run anymore, but I still he’s elusive back there.

by JasonB on Mar 10, 2010 1:43 PM EST up reply actions

Shifty & strength yeah

Are still there generally but McNabb is going to be able to duplicate that play in Dallas a few years ago where he scrambled around in the pocket forever.

Bigger issue with McNabb the past 2-3 years in the pocket is holding on to the ball too long and taking too many sacks a result.

by MG77 on Mar 10, 2010 1:49 PM EST up reply actions

Need to review film

But it doesn’t seem like the Eagles run quite as many bootlegs and rollouts as they used to for McNabb either. Guess because they are hesitant for several reasons (McNabb is a bit bigger/huskier than he used to be, prevent an injury, and McNabb really isn’t a threat to run anymore).

Kolb is pretty mobile as well. Perhaps as much as McNabb

Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome

by D3Keith on Mar 11, 2010 4:39 AM EST up reply actions

From another thread...

Part of me is starting to believe that Kevin Kolb will be traded for a butt-load of picks/players.

Bear with me as I try to explain why this might turn into a bidding war for Kolb.

There has been word coming out that teams like the Seahawks, Rams, Bills and Browns all have some pretty serious interest in McNabb/Kolb. (Moreso Kolb).

It has also been reported (speculated) today by Adam Schefter that the Browns are looking at trading Brady Quinn… which, after cutting Derek Anderson, would leave them with only Seneca Wallace at QB.

Now throw in the Rams who signed AJ Feeley to (most likely) become the veteran mentor who is there to help teach the incumbent young QB the Eagles offense (Pat Shurmur’s version of the Eagles offense).

Now throw in the fact that all three of these teams have a serious need for a QB, they all have run or will be running a version of the WCO (not sure about the Bills style of offense), and they all have a pick in the top 10 of this year’s draft.

Now throw in the fact that there are only two top 10 tier QB’s (Bradford and Clausen) in this year’s draft to fill four (or more) team’s needs at QB. That will leave two (or more) teams without a viable starting QB and that will force them to make a trade for a QB already in the league… which, in turn, will drive up the price for one of our QB’s.

The reason why I think the QB of choice will be Kolb over McNabb, is because the price might end up being too good to pass up due to age and upside while Andy Reid wants to win now with McNabb.

Sorry for the rambling… but it’s really starting to all come together. I have been going back-and-forth on whether or not we trade a QB… but now it’s more a matter of WHEN, not IF.

I already know the general consensus would be GREATLY disappointed if we traded Kolb and extended McNabb… but what if we got a BIG package in return for him? Would the level of compensation sway your opinion?

by Smitty2K3 on Mar 10, 2010 2:04 PM EST reply actions

yea i would be fine with getting a butt load of picks for kolb….as long as they turn out to be picks in 1 and 2nd round…..You got to understand that kolb can really play and we may not have any of our qbs next yr….So I think we SHOULD do is let Kolb play this yr becuz Mcnabb isnt getting it done

I understand it is a team game but MCNABB blew some potential big plays against the last two games against the cowboys…..and Im not over that…. We cant have a qb to lead our team to failure and medicracy andthink that its ok.

Out with the old in with the new is my slogan

by Jeffrey Gillespie on Mar 10, 2010 2:34 PM EST up reply actions

kolb

if the eagles trade kolb who will be our qb of the future…….we groomed kolb……but to be honest i see us lettin mcnabb play out his final yr…then we start kolb come 2011….but it sucks becuz we can let dmac go now and get some value for him…like a 2nd and 3rd rounder

by Jeffrey Gillespie on Mar 10, 2010 2:26 PM EST reply actions

It would be sweet if we could get the 14th pick for Kolb which I think that might be the only way Reid deals him. If that is the case then we could get both a DB and a DE in the first round.

by The Legend on Mar 10, 2010 2:44 PM EST reply actions

No way the Eagles would do that. None. They drafted him 36th overall, groomed him for 3 years, and in the only 2 starts of his career he pretty much played as well as anyone could have realistically hoped. Those 3 factors considered, the 14th pick would be a terrible return on investment.

by JimmyK on Mar 10, 2010 3:03 PM EST up reply actions

Still not good enough

IF…
…IF….
……IF……

The Eagles were to trade Kolb, it would be for at least a 1st this year, along with another pick this year (maybe a 3/4 or later?)… then possibly another 2/3 in next years draft.

One single 1st round pick would not be good enough for Kolb.

by Smitty2K3 on Mar 10, 2010 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

yea now that you think about it, I'm pretty sure that you are right

we would just get better value if we trade Mcnabb to the Seahawks for their 14th pick in the 1st round

eff you we winning anyway

by eagleswin on Mar 10, 2010 6:17 PM EST up reply actions

The problem is if we do trade Kolb for a lot of picks and play Don we will still need to draft a guy that can be the future of the franchise, and those guys pretty much go in the top 10 in the draft, groom him to become a solid starter and hope he pans out.

With donovan at the helm right now there is no way we go under 8-8 thus having to pick in the 2nd half of the first in the draftand chances are we can´t find a good replacement.
I know good QB’s can be found anywhere, but seriously, what are the chances?

by McMuffin on Mar 10, 2010 3:26 PM EST reply actions

Tebow?

Let him develop behind McNabb, the West Coast offense is the best fit for him. He can learn the system he’d be respectful to Donovan’s position as the starter and can learn to take snaps under center.

Pretty sure

I think Tebow if given the time to develop by a veteran who can help him out, is going to be really good (maybe not Hall of Fame good) and can carry a team to the Super Bowl. He has a great work ethic, is smart, and doesn’t have a sense of entitlement. His arm isn’t that bad, he just looks funny throwing, but if Chad Pennington can fix his throwing late in his career after two surgeries I think Tebow can.

The Bible verses get on my nerves a little too, but would be willing to look past it.

Give me an offensive line or give me death!

by Generzal Zod on Mar 10, 2010 4:04 PM EST up reply actions

I've heard crazier things on this site.

Not many, you understand, but a few. On second thought, I’m not sure that arguing Iguana was a better CB than Samuel really is crazier than arguing that Tebow can lead a team to the Super Bowl . . . as a QB. Oh, sure. Dilfer is the one everyone points to as a scrub QB who won a championship, but you could hardly say he “carried” the Ravens anywhere.

by Tracer Bullet on Mar 10, 2010 4:15 PM EST up reply actions

Carry was the wrong choice of words

Tebow has everything but the throwing motion and taking snaps from under center. The guy has a drive to be good and it is hard to over look that. I also have faith in your front office to put the talent around him that he needs to be successful, not to mention that the Eagles all ways field on the best defenses in the league.

Give me an offensive line or give me death!

by Generzal Zod on Mar 10, 2010 4:32 PM EST up reply actions

That's like saying

“That WR has all the tools except good hands.” Lot’s of guys have the drive to be great. Hell, Trot has all the intagibles anyone could ever want. That doesn’t help him when he’s getting dusted by average TEs.

Tebow’s primary job is throwing the ball and he has to completely rebuild the way he’s been doing that for 15 years, while also adjusting to the speed of the game AND learning how to read defenses while taking his drop. You want to use a late-round pick on him as a project? Sure. But a first-round pick on a guy with this many questions? No thank you.

by Tracer Bullet on Mar 10, 2010 5:18 PM EST up reply actions

I see the risks and not saying he is a sure thing

I wouldn’t use a first round on him, I wonder consider a 2nd, but would jump at the chance to take him in the 3rd.

Give me an offensive line or give me death!

by Generzal Zod on Mar 10, 2010 5:22 PM EST up reply actions

I see your point

But that’s still way too high for a project QB. What’s his ceiling? Chad Pennington? Jason Campbell? Jeff George? His floor is Eric Crouch. I’m not willing to burn a 2nd-rounder on a guy who at his best will win a playoff game every so often and at his worst will bust out after trying to switch positions.

If we trade Kolb, we have no qb for the next 5-10 years. We will be playing with scrubs like the rams. If they trade McNabb to seattle, im fine with that. If we can get a 2nd round pick this year and a conditional pick next year for McNabb, id consider that good value.

Reid is shrewd enough to get the 14th pick for Kolb, I will write a fanpost praising his general managerial skills and testicle size. It will take a ballsy man to convincingly lie to the extent where another team thinks Kolb is worth that much…even the hapless seahawks.

...But if he pulls the rug on his quarterback, Reid must do it knowing that he let McNabb down more than McNabb ever let him down.

officiating

I’ll never, ever forget Hasselbeck getting called for an illegal block on an interception return when he was trying to tackle the man with the ball. He was on defense at that moment…how does one get called for an illegal block on defense?

I’m a former college baseball umpire, so I usually have the zebras’ backs. But that one was ridiculous. Both recent Steelers’ Super Bowl wins were very poorly officiated games.

He has been pretty vocal about that being his problem before in has past NFL experience. Paul Allen was patient when rebuilding the Trail Blazers I think he will be the same way here where he knows the team needs to get younger and that will delay progress a little.

That being said I don’t see them going for McNabb or paying that high a price for Kolb who hasn’t really been battle tested yet.

LaCanfora reported on NFL Network

that teams who have called the Eagles to inquire about their quarterbacks, including Seattle, which really wants Kevin Kolb, have been told the discussion start at these prices:

Vick: 2nd round pick
McNabb: 1st round pick
Kolb: Two first round picks.

What he’s saying is that’s what must be dangled for the Eagles to listen. In the end, one or more of these quarterbacks could be dealt for something less than this and the Birds are just playing hardball because it’s early and they’re on the good side of supply & demand.

I think that’s the proper order though. Anyone that’s been here for a while knows I’m a “fix the D and give McNabb another shot” guy but I wouldn’t endorse dealing a talented 25-year-old QB to keep a 34-year-old QB under any circumstance.

Well, maybe one or two circumstances.
