Public Service Announcement: Leonard Weaver is a fullback

Here's the proof.

610x_medium

Leonard Weaver playing "airplane" back in his Seattle days via cache.daylife.com

I love him. You love him. Your mom loves him. He's a great weapon for us. He has a great average rushing the ball when he gets the chance. In my opinion, he's even more dangerous as a receiver out of the backfield. But he's still not a running back.

Leonard Weaver, our consensus best free agent pickup in 2009 (sorry Michael Vick fans) is a fullback. He overachieved last year. We used him that much because we had to. It's nice to know that we can if we have to, but I can confidently say the Eagles will not go into the season with just LeSean McCoy, Eldra Buckley, and Maurice Mallett.

Star-divide

McCoy saw action in every game his rookie season, but he's far from a seasoned vet. Yes, he'll be our primary back going into the season. However, behind him we have a combined 47 seconds of experience (approximate). The Eagles will be bringing in another running back, and he won't just be a "third" running back. We have a "third" running back. Eldra Buckley. He's a very effective special teams player, but as far as his contributions on offense are concerned, he's a question mark at best. Mallett will have to wildly exceed expectations to make the team.

So, don't be surprised if the Eagles spend a little cash on Chester Taylor or Darren Sproles this offseason. If they don't pick up a free agent RB, don't be surprised if the Eagles spend a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th round pick on a running back. I'd be astounded if they end up doing neither of those things.

If you already knew this, I'm sorry. This fanpost isn't directed at you.

However, if you didn't already know it,

Haha...

Very nicely done. As much as I love the Weave, I’m a little tired of people acting like we’re set in the backfield too.

I don't think anyones saying we're set

No one wants to spend a 3rd rounder on a RB on the basis that Mccoy will get injured. I’m perfectly fine picking up a RB in the later round, but more pressing needs and depth are elsewhere.

RB is now a major need too.

Major?

How? The bulk of the carries went to Weaver and McCoy anyway. I wouldnt call it major at all

If McCoy gets injured

I don’t want to put our running game in the hands of a late round pick and former CFLer. Our running game is already endangered in Philly, if we lose McCoy w/o a good backup it’ll go extinct.

I Am Better Than Jack Who Some Fool Thinks Is Better Than Asante (IABTJWSFTIBTA)

by DeSean10 on Mar 2, 2010 12:34 PM EST up reply actions

You can't expect someone to get injured

If Peters tears his ACL, we have no one to replace him, DRAFT OT first
If Herremans tears his MCL, we have no one to replace him, DRAFT OG first
If Bradley tears his PCL again, our LB corp will fall apart again, DRAFT LB first
If Brown goes out, we have Hanson backing him up??, DRAFT CB first

etc.

Mccoy and Weaver ran the ball just fine last year. Westbrook wasn’t alive for most of the season and those two did a fine job. Now we have that Mallet kid and if we can draft a RB in the 5th+ round (ie, Blount) we’ll be fine with depth at RB.

by Team Serbia on Mar 3, 2010 3:22 PM EST up reply actions

um "you cant expect someone to get injured"

I’d work like that if I were a coach, I’d expect for every player to get hurt, good mindset for depth and worst case scenerio’s like last year.

That

Is a fucking amazing picture.

At some point during training camp last year, (I forget when,) he was doing a live blocking drill and just wrecked somebody. It was a LB, I think. Leonard just stopped him cold and then slammed him to the ground. The LB got up pissed.

Weaver is a Fullback.....

Not sure why it had to be explained, Weaver is a fullback…..and he proved at this point probably one of the best in the league. Weaver proved what he can do as a fullback….block, run and receive. I like him because he gives Donovan more protection with his blocking, but he also has the power to be a short yardage runner. And he even showed he has a burst of speed once he gets past the line of scrimmage, or if necessary he can catch the ball. He’s NOT a backup for McCoy. McCoy now needs a Buckhalter. Buck was a good reliable backup for Westbrook. I don’t think anyone held their breath when Buck came in to give Westbrook a breather. He was good enough to start for Denver in the beginning of the season and did well. If it’s through the draft or trade….McCoy does need a good backup. Could it be Buckley….who knows? One thing for sure….Buckley is a whoooooole lot bettr than Booker…lol. But I’m sure glad we have Weaver to lead block for McCoy or whoever. Something Westbrook didn’t have.

by Virgoman3 on Mar 1, 2010 7:10 PM EST reply actions

All this nostalgia for Buckhalter ...

… kinda makes me wish he’d stayed put and waited Westbrook out. In the end, backing up Moreno is no different than backing up McCoy.

Seemed like a smart decision when he left …

Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome

by D3Keith on Mar 1, 2010 11:13 PM EST up reply actions

I held my breath

But only cause I was worried he was going to tear an ACL or something. Poor guy got some terrible luck when it came to injuries. But I never questioned his productivity when spelling Westbrook. Buckhalter always getting the shaft. he wasn’t going to Denver to back up Moreno, he was there, he thought, to be the starter. McDaniels is a bitch. Go Eagles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does that mean

that Westbrook was a fullback, too? Seems like the job description overlaps a lot in the Eagles offense. Run, catch passes, block, be a decoy.

He doesn't line up in the backfield enough.

I don’t recall any great blocks from DJax. Can you point some out? Cause then he might just be a Tight End.

by IggleGreen on Mar 1, 2010 7:23 PM EST reply actions

What happens if..

Mccoy breaks his leg or tears his acl or something. Were going with Weaver as our number one running back, with Eldra Bunkley and Mallet backing him up? Same as if Weave gets hurt all you have is Mccoy, a second year runningback taking almsot all carries.

I think you need to go into a season almost expecting your number one guy will go down at some point or for some point of time. You need to have a solid backup for every position, even if that position is your spell RB. You need at least 2 legit HALFBACKS going into the season.

Last year it was Westbrook and Mccoy, with Weave.
Now its Mccoy and ? with Weave (he will be resigned no doubt.)

i think Thomas Jones is likely, maybe reggie bush if were lucky.
With Mccoy and Weaver, we have the freedom to go after the best available back, and not worry so much on the style of runner or a good compliment.

by RiotJuice on Mar 1, 2010 7:48 PM EST reply actions

why bush?

i honestly don’t see a point in grabbing Reggie Bush or Darren Sproles….we already have a small athletic back in Mccoy…what would be the point in grabbing another. Reggie Bush imo is a bust considering all the hype built up around him. The guy hasn’t even broke 500 yards in a season in his career yet. I love watching this video hahaha that’s my opinion on Bush. But Sproles had spurts of being great but again, he’s just another small back. We haven’t had a real good thumper in the backfield in ages. I personally want us to make a move for MgGahee or sign Thomas Jones in the offseason.

I feel like I've seen a lot of good in Reggie

He’s just been buried in the really solid group of guys. I think a Mccoy/Bush spell would be the fastest west coast style running back duo in the league and thats what were set up for. Westbrook wasnt a star his first few years, just an occasional big play, I think Bush is about to hit his rrime and he is still really fresh. He might be too expensive for the saints to keep. We could sign him to a decent 4 year contract which we’d have to pay him but we’d have the best offensive skillset in the league for years to come. Imagine it.

by Route36 on Mar 2, 2010 12:23 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah, and they can time them, watch them run, lift, and all that other shit at their pro day too. Not every player has a pro day. It’s a centralized location to meet and cheese it up. The measurables at the combine are more important to the fans and the media than they are to the coaches. The interviews are where they learn the stuff they can’t see on tape.

But it doesn’t matter how fast you can run in a straight line without pads on. And rarely will you have to bench press 225 lbs 40 times during a game. It’s an endurance test, sure, but does it really tell you anything? Not a whole lot.

I am the people's troll :3™

by yomjoseki on Mar 2, 2010 12:49 AM EST up reply actions

ehhhh

I agree and disagree. I really do think that they go to see some things such as fluidity of motion…quick hips and the like. How they perform under a pressure situation, ie they know they are being televised. They don’t get that last part at pro day. But I agree that the front office doesn’t put as much stock in the pro day workouts as the fans and the networks perceive. Sometimes it can help bump a few guys up the boards, see Chris Johnson, and even can knock some players down, see Andre Smith, but you have to have a ridiculously amazing or terrible combine for either of those 2 situations to happen. Scouts most likely refer to personal visits during your collegiate years and game tape to see your true worth.

sure they do, but it’s not a National Scrutiny day like the combine. They will touch a little bit about the pro day on ESPN, focused mainly on the bigger names, and the local media covergae. The combine has a national audience watching everything, not just the brief highlights.

Combine

Is sort of half relevant and half misleading. OK, 40-yard dashes, arm reaches and so on are good to have as reference stats, and interviews can be helpful, but to my mind the main determining factor is watching the guys play.
That’s why the Senior Bowl and similar games get followed a lot.
Sometimes I think that if they held a sort of mini-camp with a lot of scrimmages, with these guys actually going up against each other, it would provide a better indicator of their performance.

Plus, way to take an exaggeration literally. The point is: He’s a D-1 RB. He SHOULD be able to run through arm tackles. That particular clip was more like a lowlight of the other team’s tackling than it was a RB highlight.

I am the people's troll :3™

by yomjoseki on Mar 2, 2010 10:02 PM EST up reply actions

That was NOT an arm tackle.

Berry led with his shoulder and although he did come at a bad angle, he still got owned. THIS is what an arm tackle attempt looks like. Ben Tate has great strength and speed for his size. He breaks tackles and fights for every yard. Proven by that first clip and various scouting reports. You may not find his highlight reel impressive but the guy is impressive.

by Route36 on Mar 3, 2010 2:34 AM EST up reply actions

God dammit, I know that. I didn’t say Berry’s was an arm tackle. The first one was full of shitty tackling. The second one, like I said, was him catching Berry running at a shitty angle. I know it’s hard to believe, but your hard-on for this guy might be unsubstantiated.

by yomjoseki on Mar 3, 2010 10:38 AM EST up reply actions

The question is, did he make them miss or did they just miss? I think they just missed. In fact, the second run, in that same clip, between the first run and the instant replay, is far more impressive. Sure, it’s slightly less flashy, but he pops a guy and gets an extra 3 yards for it.

because the implied notion of the word is different. White people used those terms deragatorily(if that’s a word). Black people use them for a number of reasons, including deragatory and just a way of saying whats up. The fact is, white people made the term strictly for insult purposes, therefore when they use it that is the only way for it to be seen. Regardless, it’s a stupid issue to bring up in a chat football room so lets squash it.

Racism is can be based upon

1. the overt intent of the individual who is actively being racist, and

2. the unwitting participation in a social structure that is based on racist tendencies

Being older than some of these guys, I remember when the term Nigger was so grossly offensive that I won’t use it, even as the term of affection that can be used as now. What is interprited between friends as innoculous can be grossly offensive to then next person who isn’t in on the dynamics of the conversation. This is why someone could interprit W.E.’s statement as overtly racist, although I do not thing it is.

For example: I don’t know JIBTA’s enthnicity, but when he said Chris Gocong and Stew Bradley couldn’t be top LB’s because they weren’t black and that African Americans were racially superior as linebackers, I was astonished. That was an example of overt and purposeful racism no matter what JIBTA’s ethnic background is. And while we all know that JIBTA is a very ignorant individual, that is no excuse for racism.

To some even the observation of another person’s race is racist in and of itself. I prefer to leave that minefield alone and walk around it.

Unless we bring in Chestor Taylor or even if we do I wouldn’t be surprised if McCoy and Weaver get most of the carries next year. I know Weaver is a FB but we also use him as a HB. I think a lot of people realize(or they should) that we need to bring in another RB in case McCoy or Weaver gets hurt. I am about to puke just even thinking about Buckley getting another carry for us in a regular season game let alone start one for us.

whats wrong with Buckley?

he did what he needed to for us. Short yardage and he is an amazing special teams player. 13 tackles for us. hell the only time he got any signifcant action last year, he performed well. Against atlanta, 8 rush 33 yds…4.1 avg. Buckley is replaceable, but not a must replace. He fills in fine as a 3rd back.

Eldra might be a #2.

And I hear Lorenzo Booker is available for when we need to go backwards.

Tony Hunt wasn’t that bad – as a running back, not a fullback. His fatal fumble happned when he was speared with two helmets at once. Got a concussion for his trouble. He could catch the ball. Bad blocker though.

by IggleGreen on Mar 2, 2010 10:31 PM EST up reply actions

I was saying last year that I really like Buckley and would

like to see him get more touches. He isn’t that big a guy – but nowhere as small as Sproles who is a Hobbit on Steroids. He’s the kind of north/south runner we haven’t had in a while. Eldra attacks the line and can bust through for short yards when the holes aren’t big enough for McCoy and (sniff) Westy. And at attacking the line, I dare say that sometimes he’s done it more effectively than Weaver. With Weaver leading the way I can see him being even more effective.

Every time he made a tackle on Special Teams, I’d see the dreads flying and think -What Asante again? Plus he looked good running in the pre-season when he was getting a lot more touches. I think Buckley is the best third the Eagles have had for years and I’d even go so far to say that he should be competing for #2 this year.

I completely agree with Talon, so I’m wondering what plays Legend didn’t like? Did I miss something?

Leonard Weaver the Face Cleaver

He got the nickname while running the ball back in Seattle. Link is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMZ695sfUiU

He was that big last year, he just never ran to the outside like in that video. He’s in open space and rips apart the defender there.

I think the way Weaver was used last year was just fine. I don’t think his role should or will be reduced or increased.

Jason - his running and receiving stats are missing from the stat page

And whn I try to click on his name to get them that way, the page freezes.

I know this going a long way back,

but do you remember Larry Czonka?

It was a different game back then but I think Weaver could approach his utility (not his numbers), given the right number of touches. Stuff gets recycled in this game.

Joe Paterno talking about the Wild Cat during the pre-season last year? He said, “When I was playing we used to do that stuff all the time. We just didn’t call it that.”

I wonder when the Wishbone is coming back.

Fair

Playing on fields without grass, I kind of tried to avoid going down to the ground voluntarily – the concept is to send the other guy there. So my shoulders and thighs got used more.

Interesting

I personally relished the strawberry at the end of the match. It said to me." Ahh some fuckers ate dirt thanx to you today." I liked to give them a nice powerful one in the beginning so that they would be wary the rest of the game. Tenative forwards, might as well be cheering from the sidelines.

Draft

I’d like James Starks from Buffalo in the 5th round. He missed his senior season due to injury, but looks to be recovering nicely. At the combine, he checked in at 6’2’’ 218 lbs. and ran a 4.50 in the 40. As a junior, he rushed for over 1300 yards, 16 TD, and caught 52 passes. I think he’d be a very good #2 back for the Eagles.

6’2" 218 seems kinda scrawny for a running back… Dude needs to bulk up.

I like it...

Sounds like a great talent in the 5th. And he can bulk up a little.
