Philadelphia Eagles Offseason Free Agency Guide - Part 1: Quarterbacks
Now that the Super Bowl is over and the 2009 season has officially ended, we can finally start to seriously consider the free agent market. In less than a month, the trading/free agent signing period will begin, so the Eagles front office will have to decide who they plan to pursue come March 5th. Over the next few weeks at BGN, we will be taking a position-by-position look at who we could see in an Eagles uniform come training camp. The first (and by far the most controversial) position on the block is quarterbacks.
With at least one of the three starting-caliber Philadelphia quarterbacks likely to leave via a trade or free agency, the Eagles should be in the market for an experienced backup. The pickings are slim this year, but here are a few players that the Eagles might consider:
A.J. Feeley- A reliable backup in Philadelphia for many years, the 32 year old Feeley will be an unrestricted free agent after a one-year stint with the Carolina Panthers. With Josh McCown returning from IR, Jake Delhomme locked in an insanely high contract, and Matt Moore stepping up in the final weeks of last season, chances are high that Feeley could be the odd man out next month. And hey, it's not like the Eagles haven't brought him back before. It might be time for a third stint from Mr. Feeley.
J.P. Losman- After a successful run with the UFL's Las Vegas Locos, Losman was picked up by the Oakland Raiders late in the 2009 season and signed to a one year deal. If Al Davis declines to offer him a new contract, the 28 year old Losman will become an unrestricted free agent. The former Buffalo Bills starter might not be the happiest to be relegated to the #3 quarterback on the Eagles roster, but considering his high TD-to-INT ratio (33:34), he'll be lucky if he reaches a #2 position on any team's depth chart. That being said, Losman has shown flashes of reliability, so the Eagles could at least give him a shot at handing the ball off to LeSean McCoy should every other quarterback on the roster go down.
Patrick Ramsey- The former Redskins first round pick may be moving to a new team for the fifth time in five years. After not playing a single snap for the Tennessee Titans or the Detroit Lions this season, the 30 year old Ramsey could find himself in search of work come March 5th. Sure, he has only has a 10-14 record as a starter, but he has kept a decent QB rating (74.9) over his eight seasons. Just don't ask him to run in for any touchdowns, though. His lifetime rushing average in 47 attempts is 1.8 yards with a sickening 28 fumbles. This is clearly third-string material here.
Other Available Free Agents-
- Jason Campbell (RFA)
- Kyle Orton (RFA)
- Chad Pennington (UFA)
- Matt Moore (RFA)
- Kellen Clemens (RFA)
- Chris Redman (UFA)
- Tarvaris Jackson (RFA)
- Josh McCown (UFA)
- Jeff Garcia (UFA)
- Kyle Boller (UFA)
- Mark Brunell (UFA)
- Daunte Culpepper (UFA)
- Charlie Batch (UFA)
- Bruce Gradkowski (RFA)
- Brodie Croyle (RFA)
- Rex Grossman (UFA)

In the next installment, we will be taking a look at halfbacks. Feel free to leave any suggestions on who to examine in the comments section.

What about Jeff Garcia as a potential backup?
Or has he announced his retirement and I am just unaware?
These are just a few potential candidates
Garcia will be a free agent, but will also turn 40 at the end of this month, so I figured I’d leave him out.
Understandable
He’s just always been a quality backup and I can see the birds signing him to a 1 year deal if we need to.
I'd rather draft a QB in the 5th/6th/7th rounder to be our 3rd QB
He’s not going to play anyways, and who knows, maybe we pull a Brady.
I’d think that’ll happen if only one of the current QBs is traded. But if two of them are moved, I’d think a veteran would have to be signed.

agree completely
especially if Kolb is the guy we keep. We can’t have Kolb start and only a rookie behind him

if we keep kolb
i think we bring back feeley…longshot for garcia…

if... if... if
i sure hope we keep kolb and send the worminator packing… he’s an embarassment… i’ve been an eagles fan for 50 freakin years and if the eagles keep mcstoooopid one more year i’m going to start rooting for the chargers… as for vick… he’s not really a qb… maybe a great running back who can throw… but he’ll never be able to take a team to the sb as the qb… if he’d agree to play rb and back up qb it would be nice to have him!!!its not going to happen though…feeley makes sense as a backup for kolb… so does garcia… i’m sure each would love to have the job… as for drafting qb in the late rounds… it would be interesting but not about to happen without a proven backup signing!!! as long as that dumbass mcidiot is gone, the team might at least haver a chance to move forward… if he stays its an insult to all eagles fans… it says the owner prefers an 8 and 8 season to really being any good!!!

elmo
im gonna tell you right now im not even reading past your post…ive read the same thing over by you, you’ve been and eagle fan for 50 years blah blah blah…im stopping at mcstooopid…same shit you wrote on another post..i dont really care wether you like mcnabb or not, but the man has a name, and if you’ve been a fan that long you’d be more appreciative of him that he’s the best qb the philadelphia eagles have ever had. the stats speak for themselves, no matter his ability to pick off worms….
don’t care what you think bout anything else. im not gonna read it. if you’re “not gonna be an eagle fan anymore after 50 years”, go ahead. let me be the first to say don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out!!!….for you to even say that crap over and over again, i dont view as a true eagles fan. good riddance!!

If he really were an Eagles fan for 50 years...
…his grammar would be dramatically better because of the rigorous primers they used in the 50’s (his use of the ellipsis would also be different), he would capitalize the beginning of his “sentences,” and his perspective on Philadelphia quarterbacks would be broad enough for him to realize that McNabb is the best QB we’ve had in (the NFL era) of those 50 years. Having him remain the leader of this team is not, “an insult to all Eagles fans.” What is, however, an insult to all Eagles fans is Elmo’s shocking lack of coherence.
...But if he pulls the rug on his quarterback, Reid must do it knowing that he let McNabb down more than McNabb ever let him down.
Phil Sheridan--Philadelphia Inquirer
whatever...
he’s a douche and doesnt bring anything to the table. he’s just here to bash mcnabb…he can feel free to have whatever opinion he wants, but atleast bring something to the discussion. continually calling him “mcstoooopid” is ridiculous. i hope he does leave, first leaving BGN.

my votes for..
sean canfield, oregon state. either with the second pick in the 4th or hopefully they get atleast a 4th from trading vick and can use one on him.
Eagles only have one 6th round pick in the late rounds, no 5th’s or 7ths….

Nice... I like the free agant series idea...
A couple suggestions…
- I’d also list all the free agents (both RFA and UFA) for whatever position you’re evaluating. Of course, continue to single out a few that you think might make sense and give analysis why (as you did in this post), but the entire list will allow the community to shop for their favorites and give reasons why they like a particular player or not.
- Some sort of primer on RFA’s and UFA’s, franchise tags and transition tags, and the rules of signing free agents in an uncapped year would also be helpful for some, I think. And I’d include a link to that primer on each installment of your series. (I’m pretty sure there have been a bunch of detailed explanations written on the above topics all over the web – Should be pretty easy to find a pretty good one after a simple search).
You beat me to this.
"They say that nobody is perfect. Then they tell you practice makes perfect. I wish they'd make up their minds." - Wilt Chamberlain
With AJ...
means we can trade Vick and McNabb/Kolb.
We have our starter with AJ as the back-up and then draft a value pick QB to be our developmental 3rd QB.
This has to be the most insignificant thing ever written...
After a successful run with the UFL’s Las Vegas Locos
I bleed green and I piss silver and blue
lol sad thing is, come 2011, the UFL will be the closest thing to football we’ll have.
"They say that nobody is perfect. Then they tell you practice makes perfect. I wish they'd make up their minds." - Wilt Chamberlain
unless the NFL does replacement players (stealing all the UFL guys)...
then the UFL looks more like

Start working out now… you could be in the UFL!
The Eagles need to sort out their STARTING quarterback situation
before they start worrying about their damn backup QB situation.
Well, they have their starting QB
they just might not be sure who it is

in other news...and kind of related to the subject of Garcia/Feeley...
Donte Stallworth had a workout with the Lions, and is expected to get a contract.
At least Vick didn’t kill any humans…

I see 3 QB's on this list
1. AJ Feeley- He knows the system and he has been successful in it.
2. Jeff Garcia- same as above, but an even better QB, even at 40.
3. Charlie Batch- he has always been a quality back up QB.
Either of these 3 I’d like to get for that 3rd spot.
" AK 47! When you absolutely, positively have to kill every muthafucka in the room! Except no substitute." Samuel L Jackson- Jackie Brown
"You know what you should do United Nations? You should sanction me. Sanctiom me with your army! Oh, wait a minute! You ain't got an army! Guess that means you need to shut the fuck up! That's what I would do if I didn't have an army. I would shut the fuck up! Shut...The...Fuck...Up!!!" Black Bush
I dunno about Batch. I think the big appeal with Garcia and Feely is that they already know the offense. If you’re going to go sign a veteran, I would go with a guy who could step in and play at near 100% from day one.
agree again
Both of those guys have played well for us. Feeley especially seems to play better for us than for any of the other teams he floats to
