Where Vick Will Go: The Breakdown

Michael_vick_eagles610x_medium

So, as we've already done with McNabb, it's time to breakdown where Michael Vick might end up.

Star-divide

Maybe I didn't make it very clear last time, but my thoughts on distinguishing landing spots for McNabb and Vick is simple. I see three largely distinct groups of teams looking for quarterbacks this offseason. There's the group who should be interested in McNabb: contenders who just need a good QB to put them over the top (e.g. MIN, ARI, SF). There's the group who should be looking to the draft: teams rebuilding long term (e.g. STL, CLE, SEA). And then, somewhere in between, there's the Vick group: those that don't have the time or don't want to fully rebuild, and are in some way desperate for attention (e.g. BUF, JAC, OAK).

This is definitely reductionist. For example, St. Louis might decide, as has been recently rumored, that Vick is a good bet for their franchise. Or Buffalo might want to go get McNabb instead. These are basic categories for who most likely will be interested — and you can definitely disagree with me.

But while we're here, let's define the Vick category a little better:

  1. Not Blowing Up and Rebuilding: I would be shocked if someone like Pete Carroll traded for Vick. He has the luxury of a few years to rebuild his team the way he wants — and can therefore take the time to develop his own QB. Whatever team takes Vick has to be looking to win now.
  2. Not a Contender Either: Arizona will not be risking their Super Bowl chances on the play of a quarterback who hasn't played in two years. Unlike McNabb, Vick isn't the last piece in the puzzle (and he may never have been).
  3. Franchise Uncertainty: Trading for Vick is inherently risky. The cost might not be very high for him, but he hasn't started an NFL game in two years. Are you willing to risk your job on his performance? To some degree, the front office and/or coach is going to have to feel pressured to make a bold move and have something happen right away. Any team with the time or confidence to rebuild slowly won't be looking at Vick.
  4. Desperation: This is what I think highlights the Vick-chasers most. Vick has maybe always been more hype than hero, and after two years away from the game that is definitely the case. He still can be an exciting addition to a team looking to return from obscurity — or just attract more fans.
  5. Need a QB, and Maybe Don't Want to "Try Again": Kind of obvious, but this team can't be set at quarterback. However, I think that they might be more likely contenders if they've already been burned once with a QB. San Francisco and Oakland fit that bill — both having tried and failed with #1 overall picks.

So that's the basic outline we're talking about. Desperate, attention-seeking, uncertain, middling teams. Who, per the rumors about Vick, fits this bill:

  • Oakland Raiders: Oakland was rumored to be interested last year, but Vick (or Tony Dungy) supposedly turned them down. Vick is everything Al Davis loves — speedy, flashy, big arm. And having already been burned by JaMarcus Russell, trading for a starter makes more sense. Of course, little Oakland does "makes sense." Then again, that may be a mark in their favor.
  • Buffalo Bills: Could be interested in McNabb, but the team reeks of desperation to me. They're trying to stay relevant while rumors swirl about a move away from upper NY (See: move for TO). New coach who probably won't be around long enough to mentor a new QB could be interested in Vick.
  • Jacksonville Jaguars: As I already talked about, the Jags could be an ideal spot for Vick. David Garrard hasn't wowed anyone, and everyone knows that their biggest problem is attendance. They have to get a game-changer this offseason to reverse that trend — whether that's Tim Tebow or Michael Vick.
  • San Francisco 49ers: I still think they're more likely McNabb suitors, but if Mike Singletary likes Vick and wants to work with him, don't count this out.
  • St. Louis Rams: Apparently there's been interest, but I think Spags would be better suited continuing his long-term rebuilding plan.
  • Cleveland Browns, Seattle Seahawks: Other teams with new regimes and long-term strategies. See above.
  • Carolina Panthers: Also mentioned them with McNabb, but this could be John Fox's last year. If he doesn't want to tie his future to Matt Moore, Vick could be an option.
  • Miami Dolphins: I know some people suggest this. Not likely. Chad Henne is their guy. (This also goes for DET, TB, KC)
  • Washington Redskins: If they weren't in the NFC East, I'd say Daniel Snyder's team would be in hot pursuit.

The takeaway: it's tough to tell who's really interested in Vick and who'd be willing to send a conditional pick for him. If the Eagles are forced to drop him before his bonus comes up then a lot of teams could be inquiring. Ultimately, though, I think the Jags take Tebow and either Buffalo or Oakland send something to the Eagles for Vick.

Thoughts?

Good analysis

Im think the best fit for Vick would be the Rams, but now that you mentioned the Jags, I could def see him going there. They alreayd have a great running game and just need a QB and a winning record to put fans in the seats.

I know a lot of people wont like this.................

but i would LOVE 2 see a Marshawn/Shady backfield, Lynch had a off year and with the emergence of Jackson he becomes more available. I think missing those games in the begining of the year never really affected him, i think he can definitely rebound and it would also make Desean happy 2 hav another Cal guy here. Rip away!!!!!!!!!

i said this as well ... i would love to have marshawn here .... imagine what he would do on a team thats actually good ...

Ooo a shot at my Bills haha. I think that the new regime in Buffalo will send Marshawn packing. Its stupid IMO but another off-field screw up and hes done for a year.

And chances are we’re going to be looking for draft picks, OL or D-line/LB to help with our 3-4 transform. Your D wont help, although I would take them all haha. Minus the d-backs coach. As for as OL goes, you guys dont happen to have a Pro-Bowl LT… oh wait… thats right we traded one of those away… haha. So I would assume draft pick would be the way to go with you guys. Maybe a 2nd rounder?

Major player for player trades rarely happen. I doubt it, but it would be nice. Of course, then Marshawn would be calling our whole team “little green dudes”.

I talked to one my friend

And he is a Buffalo fan. He said , he would be willing to go as high as 2nd rd pick for Vick. He’d also give up his 1st for McNabb, and he’d give up his 1st and 3rd for Kolb. Not that he makes the decisions, but I wonder how the rest of the Bills fans think?

most dont think anything above a 5th rounder to get vick

no one i saying a 2nd or 3rd rounder…..

and i havent seen many wanting to give up a 1 for mcnabb……sorry

5th rounder

the eagles should get more then that for vick….

"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

i wouldnt count on it

and im not being sarcastic or overtly an a-hole. the teams that want him are rebuilding (mainly) so dont expect them to give up high draft picks for a guy that might give them 4 years of service. and i know as far as buffalo goes, most assume that vick would only be brought in in order to groom a draftee to become a starter ala rodgers. so i think a 5th and possibly a 4th will be as high as you can expect. although never count out the crazy that is oakland….

Buffalo, that's where it's at baby. - Adam 'Pacman' Jones

by silverstreak3k on Feb 10, 2010 7:56 PM EST up reply actions

well

im hoping that we get a 4th….so that doesnt bother me. anything higher is just gravy. i think getting mcnabb would be more of something to improve your team while grooming a future qb, but he should go to a contender.

i think 5 years of a garunteed starting qb is worth a 4th round pick or maybe a 3rd at the highest. going to a team like buff or st. louis a 4th is perfect, its basically a late 3. a mid 3rd or early 4th will net a quality player.

"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

One more thing I was wondering is how the fans will react to whatever team he is traded to.

that’s a good point. its implied in the “desperation” part, but probably should be explicitly stated.

It would be stupid

to us the fan. But these guys get paid mad moolah to make these decisions for a reason. A part 3 should definetely be done. I’ll give my quick take for the hell of it.

If McNabb is traded. Top 3 teams (I am going with how it is currently set, so Favre is still Vikings QB since he hasn’t announced his retirement.)
1. Arizona 2. Denver 3. Carolina (teams on cusp of superbowl run, needing a QB to solidify)
If Vick is Traded. Top 3 teams.
1. Buffalo 2.Jacksonville 3.Oakland( teams needing a jump start but a lot of work to go)
If Kolb is traded. Top 3 teams.
1. San Francisco 2. St. Louis 3. Cleveland (Need a young franchise QB to continue team growth)

What if some team went crazy and gave up two number ones and a third rounder for Kolb? Would you guys be in favor of that? Everyone knows we are keeping Kolb but someone might (highly unlikely) want to blow us away with an offer to get him.

by Samoura23 on Feb 9, 2010 8:48 PM EST up reply actions

2 number 1's?

Man, that could get us some crazy talent. We could extend McNabb for 3 more years, but there’s not really a QB I would love to have in this draft and we would have to get a new one immediately for when McNabbs extension was up. 3 1st’s in this draft could really help us build up our defense. Top Safety ,LB, and DE? that would be nice. Kolb has been learning the offense though and shows signs of promise……….. They would have to pull the trigger on this trade because it is not for sure Kolb is elite talent and I would support their decision.

I'd trade McNabb to Denver for Ortan(if he were under contract) and a 6th... Ortan would

be a great backup and insurence policy if Kolb either gets hurt or doesnt pan out.

Jacksonville is dumb, they thing Garard is good. He’s terrible, they love him because 2-3 years ago he only threw like 3 INT’s to 18 TD’s…

I think that Denver, Buf, and Cle could be good… Although I think STL could make a trade, I read somewhere they wanted that Locker guy but he returned to school, I could see them trading for Dmac, drafting that kid next year and letting him develope while McNabb takes the brunt of the harrassment there.

Your posts on Suh are beyond retarded:

  1. he’s not even close to the best DL prospect to come out in 25 years.
  2. Berry fills a glaring need, Suh fills one of like 2 spots on defense where we don’t suck.
  3. 3 What you would give up for a DT is less than it would take to get an established Pro Bowl QB from some teams.

Actually your a dumbass...

1. Everything I have read says Suh is most likely the best DL prospect in the past 20-25 years.

2) Berry does fill a need, but so does Suh if your follow the thing that I said which was TRADE PATTERSON thus creating a pretty big need at DT.

3) When that DT could be one of the best then hell yeah I’d take that.. Take chances and win big or take chances and fuck up.. What does it matter, at least the first option moves us in a good direction.

Actually I’m not.

This is your plan, CREATE a need by trading our starting QB, one of the few productive defensive players we had last year and a 1st round draft pick so we can spend 50 million dollars on a defensive tackle. That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

or

Assuming you want to gut our roster(Eric Lindros style) to pay a rookie 50 million dollars guaranteed, which in and of itself is beyond retarded…..

Fill a need with one of the better safety prospects to come out of college in years. You fill a need WITHOUT creating another glaring hole in an already porous defense. Then finally, you get a guy who also got Heisman hype on a freaking awful Tennessee team, and who just spent an entire season being coached by Monte Kiffin.

But yes, I’m the one who is an idiot.

Yup Suh is a world of talent on 2 bad knees. Seeing as how linemen in general are all leg strength, that doesnt really seem like a great idea for a #1 pick.

Berry is compared to Ed Reed. Only the best saftey in the sport. Even if your crazy fantasy of trading Patterson was true, wed still take Berry because we have only 1 saftey on the roster thats can come close to starting, whereas we have a couple capable DTs already on the roster. Plus, it would be a lot easier to pick up a DT via trade or FA than it would be to get a good saftey.

A few general points

If you are coach of a rebuilding team that wants to rebuild at many positions, that doesn’t necessarily rule out the possibility of you taking Vick. Maybe you don’t like anybody else in the quarterback class of this year. Maybe you think that your first priority is to get the team from bad to serviceable, and therefore you spread things out – rather than try to get a top-notch quarterback right away (especially if you don’t think there’s one available) you think: get someone who can get the job done at QB, meanwhile upgrade offensive line and defense through the draft, and then in a couple of years if you think an upgrade at QB is needed, shoot for it (like if some very good QB becomes a free agent or you see some hot prospect that you think is the perfect fit for your team). That means teams like Cleveland and Seattle are not to be ruled out.
My thoughts about Miami and Henne are like those of other fans here about San Francisco Alex Smith: I think their current guy isn’t good and they should get someone else, but the coaching staff and the fan base are pretty much committed to them.
One more point: even though Vick wants to be a starter, that doesn’t mean he’d necessarily go somewhere that the starting job is his by default. He might be sent somewhere that he has to fight for the job (Jacksonville, Atlanta).

henne

you’re really gonna question parcells eye for talent?….he looked pretty good at the end of the year…the dolphins are gonna need a rb and need a wr…they won’t bid for vick…

"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

Henne, Parcells, Miami

I think Parcells doesn’t attach a huge importance to having a top-flight QB. Phil Simms was good and sometimes very good, but he wasn’t considered to be the absolute best.
Also, I don’t follow the Dolphins enough to know how much is Parcells on any given issue and how much is Sparano. (whose name means “they’re shooting” in Italian)
However, Miami seems to be focused on rebuilding in other areas: defense (Mike Nolan hire) and it will be interesting to see who they draft.
Henne has a strong arm but his TD-Int ratio is not good, and there were several games where he was only good for half the game and the Dolphins lost, in spite of either a strong comeback or an early lead. (Houston, Pittsburgh, Tennessee are cases in point)
Besides, everyone makes mistakes sometimes, and Henne just might be Miami’s, or he might improve in the future as the team around him does.

Rabbit... Henne is pretty good.

I was surprised he did so well, the dude has alot of potential.

You might be right

I’m just saying that my impression doesn’t give me that feeling.
Anyway, my main point is that SFO and Miami are similar cases in that they’re committed to their current starter. By the way both Smith’s and Orton’s stats are better than Henne’s.

Miamis very commited to Henne....................

He has a big league arm and he has good size for a QB, there not gonna bring in anybody 2 undermine his growth.

I think they should stick with Henne

Not only has he shown potential, but he’s young and bound to get better. They were pretty competitive this year, they just have to finish games.

Henne's gonna be very good...

he played in less games and didnt do much until Ronnie Brown went down..

He did what he did with lesser talent. he has like no WR’s, his main weapon went down, and he got thrown into the starting position… Based on the circumstances he did damn well.

Vickkk

I know there aint a shot in hell of it happening.. but I really wish Mcnabb and Kolb would trade off for some strength at safety and some mid round draft picks and then we could keep ol’ Vick in philly. Otherwise, I bet we stay with mcnabb for his last year, hold kolb in the roster and trade Vick to jacksonville. Wouldnt mind seeing that insane backfield of vick and jones-drew coming out of the same backfield, it would be beautiful.

At least 65%

of philly fans want to see mcstupid gone… me included… hopefully eagles ownership/management has finally realized he’s a bonehead… loser… embarassment and shuffles him off for some draft picks… if he’s here another year, i’m going to stop rooting for the eagles (after 50 years…enough is enough… mcnabb is the final insult ) as for vick… who cares whare he goes as long as the eagles get something for him as well??? he’ll never be a real qb and he’s not willing to play some kind of permanent hybrid running back/trick play passer role… if he were he might be worth keeping!!!!!!!!!!

Not very faithful then, are ya Elmo?

And for the love of God, pick a better name than McStupid. My my, 50 years of fandom and you can’t even come up with a clever insult?

About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.

I chalk it up to his stupidity, Hank...

But I’ll give him this. He didn’t call McNabb a “fag” or an “ass pirate.” He did not call McNabb’s supporters “cocksucking queers.” He did not personally inform us that if we liked McNabb that it somehow also meant we enjoyed warm golden showers…I consider Elmo’s comment, Cro-Magnonian as it may be, to be a marked improvement over much of the homophobic nonsense many McNabb fans are exposed to on a daily basis around here. But you are right. Elmo is a fucking moron.

...But if he pulls the rug on his quarterback, Reid must do it knowing that he let McNabb down more than McNabb ever let him down.
