Superbowl XLIV Open Thread
Superbowl XLIV is finally upon. It's a matchup of two of the best quarterbacks in football leading two of the best offenses in the leauge. It certainly has all makings of an exciting one, but it has a lot to live up given how good the past few Superbowls have been.
In addition to this thread, we're also running an SBNation league wide open thread over at SBNation, com. So if you're looking to chat about the game with fans and bloggers of other NFL teams that could be a fun scene to check out.
Here's to us winning it all in Dallas next year! Wouldn't that be sweet?

On another note...I know we a more important needs but
Jordan Shipley looks like a good pick-up for any team. We dont really need a WR. (though could use one with some good size and height). But Shipley could be a real steal in the later rounds. Like..if we could drop Curtis and or Brown, and grap Shipley in the draft! Shipley also doubles as a kick returner (and a good one). A Quick/fast reliable guy that could make a career outta the slot position. Idk whats gonna happen with Avant, but Shipley could be a more weapon for us. Jmac and Djax deep, Avant and or Shipley in the slot! Woooo

Other than Drew Brees
I can’t think of any player on the Saints that’s remotely likable. I ultimately don’t care who wins this game; just want it to be entertaining and a close one.

Anybody remember why we cut Raheem Brock after drafting him? Woulda been nice to have him on the roster all these years in place of that sideline ornament, Jerome McDougle.

Colts are running all over the Saints…

Dwight Freeney sacked Brees with one arm. Threw him down like a rag doll. Damn,

What’s the over/under for when the officials start calling basic penalties like, I dunno, holding? Or illegal contact and defensive pass interference?
thinking the refs are letting a few things go because its the sb? i am sure the nfl does not want a lot of penalties being called all game.
Terrible D by the Colts on this drive.

Nice goal line stand, though. That was anti-Reid playcalling by Sean Payton, though.

Yeah, Andy Reid
would’ve definitely taken the points.
I think that’s why you take ’em though. Going in down 10-6 with even momentum rather than letting the Colts get that big boost.
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
They're not wrong yet
The Patriots-Carolina Super Bowl was 0-0 midway through the second and finished 32-29. Both these offenses are very capable of opening up a can of whoopass in the second half.

I don’t mind the Saints, but I hate the slogan, Reggie Bush and Jeremy Shockey.

I’d love to see Reggie Bush get Sheldon Brown’d in this game.

Brees and Manning may be the 2 QB’s least affected by the blitz in the NFL today. Just tough to rattle them.
/sigh

As a guy stuck in Indiana, I’ve got to say this is great. Colts fans are big mouth front runners. Only thing better than this will be when Manning retires, the team hits rough waters, and those same fans disappear again. (First year I was here they advertised a pep rally in order to give away playoff tickets since they wanted to ensure a “sellout”.)
They are a class organization, though
I understand your points, but Indianapolis runs a quality franchise…they are an example of what teams should be like…(of course, except how they ended Super Bowl XLIV moments ago).

Regardless of what kind of fans they are
Imagine how good Saints fans feel right now. Man heres to hoping the Eagles bring one home soon, because I can’t imagine that feeling.
Now comes the depressing part...
OFFSEASON!

When you have a QB like Drew Brees
I guess it really covers up a lack of defense…crap what was he… 32/39???
E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!

For all the shit we give their defense
They did hold the Colts to 17 points and sealed the victory iwth that td
GO CUSE, BLUE, AND EAGLES!
So ummm....
You guys think the Saints/Colts will accept the trade of all 3 of our QBs for Brees or Peyton?
Saints 4 - Colts 7
I was 3 minutes from $100. Damn you, Porter, damn you!

Brees >> McNabb
Was impressive to watch tonight. Made a couple of spectacular throws but more than anything I was impressed by everything he did tonight that McNabb fails to do on a consistent basis – hit with WRs in spot on the medium routes including on curls and drag/slants across the middle, get the ball out quick/avoid sacks, and most impressively go through his progressions quickly & take what opposing defenses are willing to give him.
No McNabb basher
Look I haven’t been a McNabb basher on here nor have I advocated the Eagles need to get rid of him just for the sake of change either. Still think there best shot to make a deep playoff run next year is with McNabb and not him.
That said, there is no way the Saints win the game tonight if McNabb was their QB. Brees showed several things that he does better than McNabb.
Vermeil had some really interesting things to say about McNabb this week including the fact that McNabb needs to increase his accuracy to around 64-65% and be able to have more consistency in hitting 7-yard outs. He also stated that McNabb looked a bit heavier too. I don’t know how much McNabb can improve this year but Vermeil made some points that were pretty damn valid too.
Yeah I know
I just wish people could say, “Wow Brees played an awesome game” without relating it to McNabb. Then again, this is an Eagles blog so maybe I owe you an apology.
All I know is, I saw the Saints tonight. I can imagine what’s going on in New Orleans tonight. I want that feeling. It’s like when Harold sees their two friends enjoying a hot dog in “Harold and Kumar go to White Castle”. After all we’ve been put through, we need that feeling. We need that Super Bowl.
GO CUSE, BLUE, AND EAGLES!
Valid comparison
Look arguably the biggest question facing the Eagles this offseason is the McNabb one and it was hard as an Eagles’ fan not to compare what Brees/Manning did tonight.
Comparisons
BTY I got a text message from a good friend in SF who is a huge Chargers fan (from SD) and it said “Damn shame we got rid of this guy for Rivers.”
Would love to see...
McNabb, for just one season, put in the work and focus that Peyton puts in EVERY season. Would like even more an offensive system that doesn’t put so much pressure on McNabb to move the ball and score.

Let's be real
The Saints looked like a championship team in all phases of the game. The qb was cool under pressure, making plays when he had to and keeping the team going in the right direction. Sean Payton coached the best game I’ve ever seen in the Super Bowl. He knew he had to keep Peyton off the field and he was able to do that for a long time. Add in an opportunistic defense that made some big plays to prevent Colts’ yards from translating into points and this team deserved it.
The Eagles are not that far away from this. At least I don’t think so
GO CUSE, BLUE, AND EAGLES!
Two things
The Eagles will never have an offense as good as the Saints’. The only reason the Saints were never in the Super Bowl before the past 3 years was because their defense was god-awful. For the first time in a long time, with the additions of Jabari Greer and Darren Sharper, they actually had a solid secondary. That’s all they needed to push them over the top.
Even if the Eagles had a top 5 defense I don’t think they make it to the Super Bowl. McNabb is just too inconsistent and inaccurate, and Kolb is a big question mark, but he is most definitely not as good as Brees.
Brees, imho, is one of the top 5 quarterbacks of the past decade. He might even be better than Brady and Manning – it’s only that he was always on teams with terrible defense. Brady and Manning had the luxury of being on some teams that had dominating defenses.
If McNabb had thrown that pick to Tracy Porter in a Super Bowl
How much shit would we be talking about him right now?
We wouldn't be talking shit about him
We would be mourning McNabb’s death because someone would kill him.
RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

Peyton would have been bashed a ton....
if it was his first superbowl… or he lost his first. Remember how much crap Peyton got before finally winning a superbowl?
McNabb wins 1 and he can screw-up and people will bash him less… but he needs 1
Yea Manning's earned that
Mcnabb hasn’t. Plus Manning’s left pinky is better than Mcnabb.
WOW!!!!
