Eagles 2010 Offseason - Past, Present, and Future: DE
(For those that missed my first post; Past, Present, and Future: S)
The Eagles defense is historic for bringing the blitz and putting pressure on the opposing QB. But maybe we have to blitz the QB? Think about it, Mike Patterson and Brodrick Bunkley are solid at best. They a pure run stoppers, but they are rarely bringing pressure up the middle on third downs. Trent Coleis one of the Eagles best players ever, but is usually shutdown because of double-teams. And the huge question mark is at LDE? We have a mildly producer starter and two inconsistent role players.
Past DE: McDougle, Jerome #95
A over hyped college player for Miami, the Philidephia Eagles drafted the DE 15thoverall in the 2003 draft. But the rookie soon became injury plagued. With the Eagles, McDougle was plagued by injuries in the 2003 and 2004 seasons. In the final 2003 pre-season game, he sustained injuries during a game against the New York Jest forcing him to miss eight games of the 2003 season. Later in the 2004 season, he suffered a knee sprain in a game against the Dallas Cowboys, leaving him him inactive for the final four games of the 2004 season, which was the Eagles superbowl run. On July 28, 2005, McDougle was shot in the abdomen in a robbery, just before training camp. He missed the whole 2005 season. In 2006 in a Eagles 23-21 loss to the Bucs. In the fourth quarter of a extremely close game, McDougle sacked Bruce Gradkowski, but as seen above, the DE grabbed the QB's face mask, ending up in a 15 yard penalty. McDougle then kicked the flag, which resulted in another 15 yard penalty. The Bucs the made a difference maker 62 yard field goal. In 2007, McDougle was again injured, tearing his triceps in a preseason game against the Ravens. He was placed on IR. In '08 the DE was cut in training camp. Thus ending the Eagles headache. This is one reason I think we should not draft DE in the 1st round.
Also if we look at past history with DE's in the draft we see that its better to draft later
Eagles RDE Cole, Trent: 5th round
DE Burgess, Derrick: 3rd round by Eagles
DE/LB Kampman, Aaron: 5th round by Packers
DE Allen, Jared: 4th round by Chiefs
DE Mathis, Robert: 5th round
DE Talyor, Jason: 3rd round
That's not a bad list right there. When the Eagles take a DE early they usually don't produce; McDougle was over hyped coming out of college.
Present DE: Parker, Juqua #75 and Abiamiri, Victor #95
We can say right now, neither are the solution. Possibly Victor Abiamiri, the second round pick in '07 draft the Notre Dame. He's shown some flashes of brilliance, specificallyl ast season ('09) with the TD against the Panthers(see pic above). But like McDougle, who shares the same number, has been plagued with injury. But there's still hope, he's only in his 3rd season, althought having high expectations this season. hile only playing 29 games over three years, he has 20 tackles and 4.0 sacks. Below average, but he has never played a full season. But I feel that we need someone now to play. And current player Juqua Parker, is diminishing. Although having good stats with 34 tackles and 8.0 sacks; we all feel that the is usually getting one on one blocking and not making a huge impact.
Future DE's
Here are the top DE's in the draft
Greg Hardy, College: Mississippi, Height/Weight: 6-foot-4, 262
Hardy started nine times as a true freshman in 2006, joined the basketball team after the 2006 football season and played in 15 games. He scored six points against Florida in the SEC tournament. He has 21.5 sacks over the past three years. He can be a very good NFL player, if he plays hard every down. He has the size, speed and athletic ability needed to be great. He will be a first-round pick in the draft. His father played at Mississippi.
Corey Wootton, College: Northwestern, Height/Weight: 6-6, 278
Wootton is a fifth-year player, who played and started in 2005 as a true freshman. He was injured in the fourth game and was given a medical redshirt year. He was first-team All-Big Ten in 2008 when he had 10 sacks. He has great size and speed for the position. He is a very athletic player, who will be a first-round pick. He has tremendous upside and should be a very good NFL player.
Brandon Graham, College: Michigan, Height/Weight: 6-0¾, 275
Graham played as a true freshman at Michigan in 2006. He's an outstanding athlete from Detroit who played basketball and ran track in high school. He has started 16 games and made 19 sacks in career. He was voted MVP of the 2008 team and was second-team All-Big Ten. He has outstanding speed and quickness for his position, which complements how hard he plays every down.
Jerry Hughes, College:TCU, Height/Weight: 6-1¾, 255
Hughes played as a true freshman at TCU after being an outstanding running back in high school. He has been a three-year starter at defensive end. He had 15 sacks in 2008, including four vs. BYU. He has great quickness coming out of his stance, to go withhis 4.7 speed in the 40-yard dash. He also has good strength to stop running plays and had 17 tackles behind the line. He was a first-team All-Mountain West player in 2008 after forcing six fumbles and two interceptions. He is a possible 3-4 linebacker.
Brandon Lang, College: Troy, Height/Weight: 6-3½, 255
Lang is a four-year player, who went to prep school out of high school. He originally signed with Georgia. He made first-team All-SouthlandConference in 2008 and had 11.5 sacks. He missed most of 2007 withknee surgery. Lang is a very talented player that has speed, quickness, toughness and strength. He is a possible first-round pick, if he has a good senior year.
Jermaine Cunningham, College: Florida, Height/Weight: 6-3, 250
Cunningham played as a true freshman in 2006. He has started 26 games over the past two years and has 11.5 sacks over that time. In 2007 vs. LSU, he was credited with 17 tackles. He has quickness and speed to rush the passer. Cunningham works hard and his best position might be a 3-4 linebacker.
Sources: NFL.COM
Julius Peppers #90
News:Peppers' agent believes that the Panthers have decided to move on and that they're not interested in a long-term extension, Charles Chandler of the Charlotte Observer reports.
ESPN.COM
I say why not. He is not affected by the CBA and is proven most of all. Last year ('09) he had amazing stats for a DE. Total Tackles: 42, Sacks: 10.5, FF: 5, INTS: 2 and one for 1 TD. Imagine if we had that much production at the DL alone. With Cole and Peppers we form the....colepepper? Nah, we have one of the best pairs of DE's in the NFL. And if we get Peppers we can still groom Abiamiri and pick up someone later in the draft like Greg Middleton or Koa Misi (HAWAII REPESENTS!).

If you don't have my money for me, I'll...crack your fuckin head wide open in front of everybody in the bank. They don't play on 3rd down passing plays.
re: Mike Patterson and Brodrick Bunkley are solid at best. They a pure run stoppers, but they are rarely bringing pressure up the middle on third downs
Patterson and Bunkley can’t bring pressure from the sidelines. But I do think we need another 4-down DE stud opposite Cole.
I've been saying this for a while now
Mike Patterson and Brodrick Bunkley are solid at best. They a pure run stoppers, but they are rarely bringing pressure up the middle on third downs.
Though I do like Brodrick B cuz he a ridiculously strong. He can stuff a run up the gut more times than not!! But he is not a pass rusher. They have always said that Patterson has a “high motor”. He is suppose to be a pass rushing high motor DT..right!?! But what does he do!? What has he done impact wise?! Not a good run stuffer and doesn’t create much pressure at all! But maybe if we had another elite DE opposite Trent, then it force teams to double Trent much less and allow other players to come through on a pass rush. I would like another DE and DT (a pure pass rush DT).
"... You play to win the game. Hello? You play to win the game. You don't play it to just play it. That's the great thing about sports: you play to win..."
I think having a pure pass rush DT would help compliment ...
What we already have at the D-tackle spot. Bunk and Dixon are run stuffers, and Patterson is solid overall i guess. Laws, well, Laws has been a healthy scratch so…! Of we can get a pass rush DT it would help us out. But we need another elite DE FIRST!. Another great DE would greatly improve our defense!
"... You play to win the game. Hello? You play to win the game. You don't play it to just play it. That's the great thing about sports: you play to win..."
I think we'd be really impressed with Bunk
if McD let him tee off on the QB. The scheme has him plugging the gap and staying put so he doesn’t over pursue the runner. He’s so strong and athletic, I’d bet he’d be awesome at rushing
"EFF YOU, WE'RE WINNING ANYWAY!!!!!!" (Bye, Dawk)
Yea I hear ya
I was gonna say that actually. Its not Bunckleys fault that he hasnt gotten to the QB becuz the coach (s) dont turn him lose very often. Do I expect McD to change this..nope, not really, but lets see what happens. Hopefully McD will in fact change/ shake things up!!
"... You play to win the game. Hello? You play to win the game. You don't play it to just play it. That's the great thing about sports: you play to win..."
I don’t know about that. If he is good at rushing why would McD pull him out on passing downs for Howard/Abiamiri? I understand plugging the gap on 1st and 2nd downs but on 3rd & 4 or longer, he should be on the QB’s back(no homo)
thats what I wanna find out
True..they do take him out on 3rd and longs..but they also don’t turn him loose very often..well enough to make a fair assessment of his pass rush skills. Though..if he hasn’t gotten to the QB often by now, then maybe it is safe to say that he isnt a solid pressure DT. I guess I just need to see more of him pressuring the QB to assess the situation..is what it comes down to!
"... You play to win the game. Hello? You play to win the game. You don't play it to just play it. That's the great thing about sports: you play to win..."
Peters for a 3 year contract?
and the next years draft or the 2012 draft we get a DE if there is no lockout that is
eff you we winning anyway
A.I. IS BACKKKKKKK
my thing is..
and Im taking everything that Andy Reid and Banner say, with a grain a salt….If Andy does in fact want to bring back Dmac for one more season, he is saying that they want to try and win a Superbowl NOW! If this is the case, then we HAVE to fix the defense. Becuz our defense is not a championship caliber defense. We are missing key components. One is another DE. If Reid and Banner bring back Dmac, then they MUST bring in another elite DE. Peppers would be a huge acquisition. And with Trent opposite him..woo, look out! Dont bother bringing back McNabb if ur not going to bring in another dominant DE. Choosing to stick with McNabb is saying that u r go’n for broke becuz now, u can’t trade him as his contract will be up. If u do that, then go for broke on the defensive side to, cuz that’s what will really help us win a Superbowl ultimately.
"... You play to win the game. Hello? You play to win the game. You don't play it to just play it. That's the great thing about sports: you play to win..."
yessir completley agree i think the eagles see it that way too....
they could go after Bethea or Collins even though they are restricted and could go after Peppers
eff you we winning anyway
A.I. IS BACKKKKKKK
yessir was gonna fix that but i thought everyone knew what i was saying
eff you we winning anyway
A.I. IS BACKKKKKKK
I don't agree with the thought that
Since McDougle sucked, you shouldn’t draft a DE in the first round. That’s like if the San Diego Chargers said, “Well Ryan Leaf was a disaster so no more drafting of quarterbacks in the first round ever again.”
Sometimes it's just fun to take the family for a spin around the lake in the old boat. Even if it's not your family or your boat, and they're screaming for you to stop.

Very true
"... You play to win the game. Hello? You play to win the game. You don't play it to just play it. That's the great thing about sports: you play to win..."
I mean..look at Mario Williams
A former first rounder and First pick of the draft. Look him a good while to adjust to the NFL level. People called him a bust after his first season and halfway into his second. But look at him now. Not the single most best DE in the league, but considered to be amongst some of the elites!
"... You play to win the game. Hello? You play to win the game. You don't play it to just play it. That's the great thing about sports: you play to win..."

High DE draft picks
Are notorious for having a pretty high ‘bust’ or wash out rate and taking at least 1-2 years to become real impact players. Really rare you get one in the 1st round you comes in and plays at a pretty high level consistently through out the year.
Peppers had “amazing” stats? Seriously? I disagree fully. He’s a one dimensional pass rushing DE, and he’s not even great at that anymore.
I am the people's troll :3™
you name a DE with 2 picks last seaon and a TD......yeah I thought so
Eagles move up for Eric Berry!!!!!!!!!!!
lol, thats just luck, you cant count that in an arguement.

10.5 sacks
Is not luck. I would take that production opposite Cole any day. Ray Edwards might be a better fit though
GO CUSE, BLUE, AND EAGLES!
Ray Edwards had ONE good game.
Peppers had 10.5 sacks. Big whoop. Juqua Parker had 8.0 and he didn’t cost $1 million per game, and didn’t even play as many snaps as Peppers.
I am the people's troll :3™
No no no.. Im not saying his sacks are bad..
Im saying that him having 2 INT’s is just luck.
Ray Edwards sucks. He’s nothing without the two fatass’s and Allen… He had 1 good game because he got matched up one on one against a slow, hurt Flonzell adams… I couldve matched his production in that game.

isn’t the “one million dollars” it used to be…..it wouldnt make you set for a “long time”…if you won a million dollars, you’d still have to work full time…

With a million dollars? You could easily get a bank to give you 5 percent interest, probably more. That’s 50 g’s a year. If you can’t live on 50 g’s then you are living way outside your means. Please give me $50, 000 a year. I’d be set.
