Around SBN: Dissecting Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

"They don't need my advice, but I would say run the ball," said former Eagles safety Brian Dawkins, who played in his eighth career Pro Bowl on Sunday, his first as a Denver Bronco. "Run the ball. With that passing attack, the way that thing is shaping up to be, go ahead and bring Donovan [McNabb] back to where he's supposed to be, and run that pill and let those weapons outside go to work."

The most intriguing quote is this:
(Rich) Gannon, in town working for Sirius NFL Radio, believes McNabb remains a top-10 NFL quarterback, but also believes he needs to change his off-season approach.

“I know he gets on a plane at the end of the season and he heads back to Arizona,” Gannon said. “He likes being there, and I know he brings players out there to work out and I know he participates in the minicamps, but I don’t know in this day and age if you can operate that way.”

Gannon’s solution is for McNabb to be a full-time resident at the Eagles’ practice facility.

A lot “can get accomplished in that off-season program,” Gannon said. “I think it’s important to be in the weight room with these guys, and I think it’s important to be out throwing to the young receivers.”

“Watch Peyton Manning and what he has done with those young receivers,” said Gannon, who also cited the Saints’ Drew Brees and "his living down there in New Orleans. I think it’s important to be a fixture in the building. If I was coaching, that’s one thing I would insist upon.

Why hasn’t this been talked about more? McNabb living in Arizona during the offseason might not have hurt anything, but it certainly didn’t help anything either. Maybe if McNabb lightened up a bit in the weight room and stuck around to work out with Celek and the rest of the guys, we’d see an improved Donovan.

One thing I’ve never understood is why he’s the only QB in the league that looks like a blown up LB or TE. It might be a minor thing, but maybe if he looked more like a QB rather than a body builder then he’d be able to fix his mechanics and be more accurate.

(Yeah I know… it’s wishful thinking to believe his mechanics could be fixed. Probably not gonna happen.)

Hes been the same QB for the pat 10 years

What makes us think he’s going to change @ the ripe age of 34?

Yeah it’s also wishful thinking to believe he’s going to change… but if he would try staying in Philly this year (if the Eagles are definitely going to keep him) then I think it would certainly help.

McNabb

Do you really think that McNabb’s build has anything to do with his arm? Come on now, he also is not the only big quarterback in the league. Mcnabb is big, it just is the way he was made. Are we really criticizing his body? Maybe since Mcnabb is getting older, he might want to stick around philly for a little while longer, but his methods have been fine in the past. His physical body??? really?

by PhilsForever on Feb 4, 2010 3:09 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I know… it’s a little ridiculous… but I can’t help but notice how stiff he looks in the last few years. I’ve always been a McNabb supporter so I’m not hatin’… but he’s definitely gotten bigger and bigger and slower and slower. It might not be affecting his arm/accuracy because he’s always been inaccurate, but look up pictures/tape of 2004 and you’ll see what I mean. He was slim.

I’m not saying his size has anything to do with his performance…. but ya never know. It could.

by Smitty2K3 on Feb 4, 2010 3:26 PM EST up reply actions

He seems plenty in tune with his young WRs.

Plus, I think he’s actually been less bulky the past couple years.

Run...the ball?

I would love to know Andy’s reaction to this. By the way, what does “run that pill” mean?

by ajay on Feb 4, 2010 10:22 AM EST reply actions

I’m fairly certain that if Reid ran the ball, he’d challenge it. He’d inform the zebras that this direct hand off to a player behind the line of scrimmage was an illegal play. Its obvious the ball has to travel through the air at least 5 yards before being caught by another player. Thats just how football is played. These runs? They’re illegal!

Let the beasting begin.

Uh Dawk - yer brainz gone dawky

The first sentence was pretty clear.
The second one was just vague as an egg – couldn’t tell what he was trying to say.
Smitty, interesting points on the Gannon quotes, maybe McNabb doesn’t work enough one on one with his teammates?
Ajay, “that pill” just means the football, I think

Pill

Open wide and take your medicine, defense.

Gannon maybe has a point. Still, after 11 years I don’t expect to see a lot change with McNabb.

There were aboout 12 teams that passed more than us

and ran less… 2 of them were in the SB this year, and another was in the CG.. All were in the playoffs EXCEPT the Jets who got in with an impressive defensive unit.

In other words, start being more consistent and our offense will be better.

Joe, funny how no one complains about passing to much when it WORKS! ;^)

lol exactly

Do u think Vikings or Colts fans were all riled up becuase they passed the ball 550+ times lol?

you always bring up that argument Joe

but the fact of the matter is that the colts are the colts, the vikings are the vikings, and the eagles are the eagles. All teams are different. with mcnabb at the helm we NEED a running game to be successful because we ARE consistent

you are so prescious

you should be McNabb’s publicist. You make every excuse in the book for him .

how do you get that from what i posted

if a new user posted that would you surmise that he was a mcnabb fanboy. Look at this point I want kolb to start too, but the fact of the matter is that for mcnabb to suceed he needs a run game because he IS NOT CONSISTANT…like you always said. i never thought mcnabb was consistent at all.

You sure about all that?

In this year’s regular season, the Saints were 7th in rushing attempts and only 15th in passing attempts. The Eagles rank 28th and 10th in those respective categories.

I’m not sure where this idea that the Saints aren’t a running team comes from – they are a truly multi-dimensional offense.

by mrb5091 on Feb 4, 2010 10:14 PM EST up reply actions

those runs

came when they were blowing teams out.. obviously you stop passing when its 35-10

E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!

by Joe_D on Feb 5, 2010 7:43 AM EST up reply actions

And you don’t feel that much of the Eagles rushing yardage came in garbage time?

by mrb5091 on Feb 5, 2010 10:38 AM EST up reply actions

I don't know if I'm crazy...

Would anyone else see the eagles trying to get LT because he is unhappy in SD considering we might be getting rid of westbrook, bring in LT teach shady and still get good production on a high caliber team that he might be willing to play for….?

by Eaglesfan10 on Feb 4, 2010 1:16 PM EST reply actions

No

We already have two RBs who will carry the rock (Weaver and McCoy). Our 2nd string RB doesn’t get many carries as it is, so why would he be happier here in Eagles land?

E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!

by Joe_D on Feb 4, 2010 1:47 PM EST up reply actions

LT is done for

Out of gas. Below 3.5 yards per carry.
If you want him to make some contribution to the Eagles, wait until he learns how to be an RB coach.

by Rabbit T on Feb 4, 2010 2:22 PM EST up reply actions

uhh, yep.

Well, the point is not neccessarily to pass less and run more..but to pass more effectively. Running more is usually the way to enable this.

If the Birds aren’t passing effectively throwin the ball, whay do you suppose the next step would be?

Well, they could get better recievers, change the QB or…..run the ball.

Hmmmmm.

by bigmyc on Feb 4, 2010 4:07 PM EST reply actions

Pass more effectively

Right, we all agree there. I’m with you in that a more respected run threat would go a ways to making that happen, but the argument for switching to a more accurate passer (or making Don miraculously become one) is valid.

Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome

McNabb should go to AZ

via a trade. Please, please, please, no more Donovan McNabb in Philly!
