Eagles on Julius Peppers' short list?

Here's the latest... Jeff McClain of the Inquirer is reporting that Peppers hopes the Eagles have interest.

According to a league source, the former all-pro defensive end, who will become a free agent Friday, has the "Eagles on his short list of teams."

If I had to guess... The "league source" is either Peppers' agent himself or someone that works for him. The "short list" of teams are ones that have money to spend and the agent hopes will start a bidding war.

I have a feeling that Peppers would be happy to play for any team willing to meet his asking price.

This is the time of year when agents make their money... and stirring up a frenzy over your client is a good way to do that.

good point

About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.

by IronHank on Feb 28, 2010 7:52 PM EST up reply actions

Peppers can play the run

Kearse was a pure pass rusher that couldn’t handle the fact we ask our DEs to engage a block first.

by Smallbugger on Feb 28, 2010 7:59 PM EST up reply actions

Kearse was good at the begining, not amazing, but better then what we had at the time.

I don't think there's a comparison

between Kearse (who was always an undersized speed rusher) and Peppers (who is an athletic freak who has the size and all the tools to be great, and only his “motor” is questioned)

Given that Peppers isn’t being brought into to be the defense’s savior, but rather a bookend with Cole; AND given that the Eagles like to rotate DEs anyway, I’m less bothered by the “doesn’t go hard all the time” than I normally would be.

Also I think turning our defense from good to great would have a much bigger effect on the Eagles’ potential success than making a move at quarterback, and these guys whose effort (Moss) or dedication (Dillon) is questioned seem to do just fine when a team is having a shit-ton of success.

This is why I’m salivating over this potential signing when I’m usually against chasing the hot free agent.

well I go to training camp every summer, and its amazing how much Andy gets the guys to hustle and stay in line. I mean, even Owens stayed in the lines until the media blew it open for him.

Even with the Eagles rotating their DE's

What if Peppers’ cruise control still kicks in when its his turn on the field? I don’t think its fatigue that causes him to kick it into idle, I think it’s his attitude.

So how do the Eagles get his best effort after they give him several million dollars?

Agree

I think we need to vastly upgrade our defense (though the O-line worries me). DE is a big spot, another linebacker, and a FS. I think if we do that, we’ll be okay. Much better than a QB change.

I would still to this day do that Kearse deal, he was awesome there was no telling he would flatten out here. This is why even though I think it will cost to much I still want to see Peppers signed.

His tenure here didn’t live up to the expectations of the contract, for certain, but it wasn’t all bad.

This would be outrageously sweet

But for some reason I’m not getting my hopes up. Am I being pessimistic? Was last year’s busy offseason a sign of things to come this offseason? Fingers crossed

by greeninireland on Feb 28, 2010 7:41 PM EST reply actions

Well there are 32 teams

- okay, 31 - who have a shot at Peppers (in theory), so not getting your hopes up is probably wise.

But I want an impact S, LB and DE from this offseason … and a C. Adding a monster DE would cover one of those needs, maybe two, since an ill rush can compensate for a meh secondary

Too expensive

I wouldn’t make the move on peppers he’s gonna want 3 or 4 years, which isnt what we want for long term.

Whoever said it doesn't matter whether you win or lose, probably lost.

by David Harnden on Feb 28, 2010 8:02 PM EST reply actions

I was hoping for 3 years myself

figuring that’s as short as we’ll go. But length of contract doesn’t really mean squat if it’s crafted so we leave an out to cut him when we think we’ll need to.

I just happen to be of the opinion that the Eagles are gonna make one more run with McNabb this year than turn it over to Kolb, which might mean they’ll spare no expense to craft a contender. But who knows?

I hope to sweet baby raptor Jesus this doesn’t happen. It’s not that he’s old or can’t play, it’s that he WON’T put in the effort to be worth the massive contract he’s going to command. Giant waste of money. He’ll make some plays but he will not be worth the money. I believe the front office will feel the same way and will not put much consideration into him, but I’ve been wrong before. I just can’t see him putting in the effort after he gets paid.

I am the people's troll :3™

by yomjoseki on Feb 28, 2010 8:30 PM EST reply actions

I don't buy that ...

… I agree that the FO might agree with you, but I don’t believe you can predict how much a guy will try. Or rather, how much “try” is enough try, especially when a guy is so physically gifted he makes the game look easy.

Bottom line is Julius Peppers not trying all that hard is still an upgrade for our defense. And I’m not even sure we need him going hard out there every play (as blasphemous as that sounds) because he still commands double teams, which will keep said double teams off Trent Cole.

But to take it one step further, I think most of these guys are motivated by having something to play for, and believing you can win a Super Bowl is as good a motivation there is. Then you’re talking about playing across from the ultimate motor guy in Cole, perhaps even a friendly competition as to who will end up with more sacks, and I don’t think motivation will be a problem. I really don’t.

If we don’t get him, it won’t ruin the offseason for me (especially if we got a Kampman or somebody). But we need to address the defense and I think Peppers would have a huge impact.

Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome

by D3Keith on Feb 28, 2010 9:08 PM EST up reply actions

The thing is, there’s been times he wasn’t “trying” when he was supposedly working for a new contract. If his motivation is questionable when he’s not working for a new contract, is it unreasonable to think it’s going to be questionable AFTER his big payday?

I am the people's troll :3™

by yomjoseki on Feb 28, 2010 9:25 PM EST up reply actions

Well there's the risk.

Some might say that’s what happened with Stacy Andrews. (I’m not so sure – Stacy is a mystery to me.)

I think we can all agree that something had to happen with the ‘other’ end (not Trent) and JP might be the best option available.

If the Eagles do decide to ante up for him, it’ll be a coaching issue to keep him motivated. Just like T.O. as someone said? I sure as hell hope not.

by IggleGreen on Feb 28, 2010 10:07 PM EST up reply actions

Kampman has as much upside and will cost half as much.

I am the people's troll :3™

by yomjoseki on Feb 28, 2010 10:09 PM EST up reply actions

Well, maybe Kampman wouldn’t be that great. I just glanced at his stats and he had two great years and a bunch of forgettable ones, plus his ACL. But the fact remains that Peppers will come with a gigantic price tag, and most sane people at least acknowledge the risk of him not being productive once he’s paid.

I am the people's troll :3™

Kampman is fast approaching the age when it’ll be over quick.

The monster at the end of this blog.

by grover on Mar 1, 2010 12:33 AM EST up reply actions

No, it's not unreasonable at all ...

… your point is plenty valid. I just happen to be of the opinion that these are are less motivated by money (especially when it’s more than you can count) than they are by winning and their peers. So if he wanted a big contract because it makes him feel cool around other football players … having it actually means hes has to live up to it & not let the guys he plays with down.

Plus, there are examples of guys who were supposedly not trying that came in and went hard when they got a change of scenery on a winning team; you could argue that the Eagles don’t quite have the veteran leadership the old Patriots did though.

And Jason Peters openly clamored for a new contract. So did Asante Samuel. I don’t think either of those guys was known as a big “effort” guy beforehand, but they’ve done what they were brought here to do.

Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome

exactly ...

I think he was so fed up with the Panthers that even money couldn’t motivate him.

Also everyone seems to forget that our biggest problem on defense is TEs. You have two dominating DEs you almost force the Offense to keep a TE in to block, problem solved.

If we pick up

all of these key pieces there wont be an immediate need in the draft meaning no need to get value for McNabb, and although talks always go back to trading him before we get no value, we only need that value if we don’t pick up key FA’s

by RossyJr22 on Feb 28, 2010 9:15 PM EST reply actions

I disagree with all of the haters

I think that peppers will be a pretty good addition to our team and an even better book end to Cole. I was a little apprehensive at first but I think that he’ll let the interior linemen create better gaps and lets face it; he’ll beat out parker and while we keep parker as a backup we’ll have a deep D line and a better chance to stop the run. Look at what happened last year when we couldn’t stop the run and our LB corps were dessimated by injury.

I say we pick up peppers, draft a quality LB, and hopefully pick up the S Rolle from Ari. and we’ll be set. Hepefully we can get a guard and some more depth at LB later in the round and it’s a wrap!

Feb 27 FS Antrel Rolle likely will be released in the coming week rather than pay a $4 million roster bonus that’s due in early March. Rolle’s salary also is scheduled to escalate to $8 million. The $12 million price tag for 2010 is too high, but the Cardinals view Rolle as a key piece to their defense. Rolle and ILB Karlos Dansby have said they’d be interested in playing for Miami. “At this point, I realize those guys could become free agents and they are interested in what the market will bear,” GM Rod Graves said at the Combine. "At the same time, I am confident those guys don’t undervalue what they mean to our football team and their relationship with us.

Peppers +Rolle = SB

If we were able to get them we would be able to go into the draft without major needs besides C and OLB it would allow the team to draft the best player at the position instead of being left with a have to when are turn comes to draft. But yes if the D wants to get better giving Cole a friend to play who can get the most sacks would allow us to go back to dictate there O one of are biggest probs is TE’s well with peppers and cole there TE would have to stay in a lot more.

But at the end of the day if our D line was able to get more pressure we could blitz when we wanted to and be more successful when we did it. also our mediocre DT’s would look better with that type of DE’s

Eagles offseason

Sign peppers aand an athletic linebacker. Thomas Howard. He’s a free agent and he isn’t a big name so he shouldnt demand a high contract. Acquire the Cleveland browns first rounder and draft Eric berry if he falls to 7. Then with the 24th pick you got a couple of choices. You could go center to replace Jackson since Cole isn’t a natural center. Plus Jackson will be out maybe the whole year with his torn ACL. you could take the guard from Idaho while the Andrews brothers are rehabbing. You could get cute and draft Taylorays to have berry and mays for the future. A pure ballhawk and a punishing hitter. You could also draft cb for the future. Or you could draft another linebacker for when witherspoon leaves and replace him with Sean weatherspoon from mizzou. Maybe draft Terrence Cody second round and legarrette blount third? Maybe Jevan Snead if mcnabb or kolb goes. Sign sproles. To be the third down threat or rely on avant. We need a good kick returner though.
