Inside the Call: Vick's 76 Yard TD to Maclin
The idea behind this creation is to show you–our readers–how the Eagles develop some of their exciting plays that have been seen in notable games, and how they have been able to execute them to perfection. In what is currently somewhat of a dull time of the season, the offseason is all about rumors and Draft coverage, but we hope to bring a creative and interesting twist to Philly fans. Without further ado, here is the first Inside the Call...
Let’s take a look at Michael Vick’s 76 yard touchdown strike to Jeremy Maclin in the playoff meeting against the Dallas Cowboys.
The play occurred on second down, with three yards to go, and the Eagles trailing by seven. With Vick’s shaky throwing capability, the Cowboys weren’t expecting him to throw, let alone throw a 76 yard strike. Dallas knew how the Eagles used Vick throughout the course of the season, and couldn’t even imagine the Eagles allowing him to test his arm out in the postseason. But they were wrong.
The Eagles outsmarted Dallas with the placement of Vick at Quarterback, instead of their team leader, Donovan McNabb. Vick showed his potential, if you could call it that, after he hit the Eagles leading rookie receiver, Jeremy Maclin, for a 76 yard touchdown to tie the game up at 7-7.
The Diagram
How it worked
The play began with a play-action, which caused the Cowboys front seven to freeze just in case LeSean McCoy (29) happened to possess the ball. Vick’s decision to roll left bought a lot of time for Maclin (18) to beat his man.
Whoever questioned the Eagles offensive line must have not seen this play. Max Jean-Gilles (62) did a beautiful pull block to eliminate DeMarcus Ware (94) from the play. Aside from Jean-Gilles’ block, tight end Alex Smith (82) finished off Ware after the initial block from Max Jean-Gilles. The blocking scheme clearly targeted the Cowboys’ best defender, and was designed to take him out the play to give Vick time to throw.
Now let’s look at how Maclin sprung open. The rookie out of Missouri proved that he has matured a whole lot from Week One with his excellent route on this particular play. Mike Jenkins, who played fantastic in 2009 for the Cowboys, was the one responsible for covering Maclin on this play. The route brought Maclin inside the numbers, giving Jenkins the difficult task of “guessing” as to which way Maclin would turn. The Pro Bowl corner decided to bump Maclin on the inside, but didn’t realize the speed the rookie possessed, and quickly stumbled to the ground when Maclin headed to the sidelines.
Vick saw the slip-up by Jenkins, and threw an absolute dart to Maclin, who turned it up field and took it to the house. It’s also worth noting that DeSean Jackson (10) ran a post route on the play, and ended up cutting off Terrance Newman (41) from his pursuit of Maclin.
Thanks for reading! Please let me know what you think of this, and let me know if you have any plays from this past season that you would like me to present in future articles.

The play was designed for vick to roll left, effectively faking the play-action-QB-sweep
play that we did many times throughout the regular season. Me and my friend called it when vick came in, we said they had set up a fake run – deep pass all year by having him run it almost every time, and now was the time to have it pay off. Great play and good breakdown.
If you’re looking for another play to analyse I’d check out McNabb-to-Maclin against Tampa-Bay.
My "t" and "y" buttons are messed up so don't bitch at me about misspelling, I'm just saying.

LOL that play was pretty good..
I think Maclin made Vick look alot better than he really is though..
BTW late in the year Maclin went God-like

Not taking anything away from Vick, its just that the pass was like a 15 yarder,
I think It was more maclin making that play happen than anything, he lost Jenkins then used his speed to take it to the house..
We can both agree it was a fantasic play making both players look good.

But Vick gets the Kudos
because he threw the “deep” big play TD pass against the ‘girls when McNabb wasn’t able…
It may not be fair to Maclin, but it was the better storyline. Those who watched know that while Vick made a decent throw, it was Maclin that torched the D.
Maclin made that play happen and Vick did what a QB is supposed to do..
Maclin completely lost Jenkins, then made a move up the field, Vick made a beautiful pass, took his time to ensure it was catchable then just let Maclin use his speed to blow shit up…
Both of them get Kudos in my book.

Fantastic
Love this idea for a post. Keep it up. Can you show some huge defensive plays too? I love any football knowledge I can get.

Outstanding Analysis, M7
Thanks for time you spent on it.
I agree that Vick was very heads-up and poised on this play. Showed his worth in a trade. Maclin was, well, Maclin and I really hope to see more of that in 2010.
Keep all 3 QBs.......
This is one reason why I’d like to see the Eagles keep Donovan, Kolb and Vick….if possible. I still believe that Donovan is the soul of the offense. Many may criticize him for being inconsistant, but in some of those games, it was the defense who gave up the points. Can’t blame Donovan for that…lol. It is a fact that Donovan has gotten injured in the past 3-4 years, so by having Kolb as a very qualified backup, when he does have to come into a game the offense doesn’t have to miss a beat…..especially if they keep Vick for third down situations and the wild eagle formation. If Vick stays, he’ll probably get more touches than Kolb during the season anyway, but if Donovan does go down……Kolb comes in and Vicks role doesn’t have to change……..unless Kolb goes down. Then it will be up to Vick to start. If Vick stays, I expect him to be in tip top shape come training camp and his passing arm will be in better shape too. I’m not sure about the rest of you, but I’m crossing my fingers that the Eagles keep all three. But I’m also sure that many of you Donovan haters will disagree…….lol.
Just my opinion………………..
It's not Donovan I hate
It’s Vick. get him out of here. Take the “Wild Eagle” with him. (Not the fan here, the stupid ass plays)

If we put Jackson in motion before the WildEagle plays, I guarantee they would have been far more effective. I swear, Reid took what could have been the most dangerous wildcat in the league and totally fucked it with bad play design.
About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.

Some times the fans figure it out before the coaches. Ought to send this one
to the Linc, Attention Andy Reid.
How was it screwed up????
I’d like to know how Andy screwed up the ‘WildEagle’. Vick had no off season conditioning program. He came straight from the slammer to the practice field…..out of shape, in no kind of football shape and his arm was rusty as hell. Over time, with practice and conditioning, I saw improvement. Before the Atlanta game the ‘WildEagle’ looked crappy, disorganized, cheap, totally FU…lol. But by the Atlanta game it looked like something was there and it worked pretty good in that game. Not perfect, but you could see if perfected, what it could be. Personally I like it now. The only time during the Dallas games that the Eagles caught them on their heels was with the ‘WildEagle’. Call it a lucky pass, call it all Maclin, call it what you want…..but it worked for a score. If Vick stays with the Eagles and do as he says by getting in tip top shape during the off season….and with more and more practice come training camp, the WildEagle could be a force to deal with.
My questions would be……why would the Eagles suffer through the humiliation, invest the time and money in a player like that for one year?? All the druggies have been forgiven, all of the spousal abusers have been forgiven, all of the gun totting nuts have been forgiven, so why not forgive Vick too.? I hope the Eagles keep him and the WildEagle. Just my opinion.
Goooooooooooooooo Eagles………
He's inbetween - a change-of-pace quarterback
Not a backup resigned to being a backup, not the long-term QB of the future, not the “win it all now” guy either. Obviously his teammates like him or they wouldn’t have given him (internal cringe) the Block Award, but the coaches might consider him a walking time bomb in the locker room after his comment that he wants to be a starter. The way the team is set up now, McNabb is the current starter and Kolb is considered the future starter (when we reach that point is unclear and some fans think it should’ve altready been reached) – Vick obviously thinks he’s ready to spend 16 games under center somewhere, but I don’t see that on the Eagle map.
Now that we are over the Wild Eagle...
and until he’s traded, Vick is the best 3rd QB in the league. Please, let’s be over the Wild Eagle.
Love it Maclin7
Keep’em coming!

wow outsmarted the cowboys? really?! c'mon
if jenkins doesnt fall down its a 15yd pass at best. Yes maclin did a great job of taking advantage of Jenkins falling but in no way was it the cowboys being “outsmarted”.
And jenkins didnt fall because of maclins awesome speed but people were falling all day on that turf. still nice write up from a bias fan
What the French?! Toast!
Jenkins got juked outta his shoes...
