Bucky Brooks, Steve Wyche, and Michael Lombardi talks Eagles quarterbacks. All three make excellent points(especially the O-line and defense issues) and I obviously thoroughly agree with them.

Let the man finish his last year...

What do we lose? A second round pick and Kolb’s one year with a ridiculously young team? Give me a break. If you really are begging for that second rounder, Eagles can tag Donovan the following year and still get a second rounder out of him(barring injury).

The defense and O-line are our MAIN problems. Unless those are fixed, any quarterbacks not named Peyton Manning or Drew Brees cannot win the Super bowl with this team.

Mcnabb is still the best quarterback on this team and I’m sorry, you don’t trade away a franchise quarterback for an unproven one. Keep them both for 2010. 2 >1

My bad for beating a dead horse.

Oh yea...

Great example of this…

you don’t trade away a franchise quarterback for an unproven one

San Diego Chargers: Traded Drew Brees away so Rivers can start. Don’t get me wrong, Rivers is an excellent quarterback…..in the regular season. Peyton faced the same Jets defense the following game and absolutely raped them while Rivers threw two picks and basically cost them the game. The Giants initially drafted Rivers and traded him to the Chargers for Eli. Brees and Eli both now have Super bowl rings. Oh, the irony.

by Route36 on Feb 19, 2010 3:14 AM EST up reply actions

Oops, almost forgot Brees was not traded but let go. Whew! Dodged a bullet on that one!

by Route36 on Feb 19, 2010 3:25 AM EST up reply actions

You are really going to say that the Giants made a good trade in grabbing Eli in that draft? That was one of the worst trades in the past decade.

by You don't have to be sweet, to be good on Feb 19, 2010 11:38 AM EST up reply actions

Oh, really? Worst trade of the decade?

Take a look at Eli’s numbers this past season. Also, take a look at the this chart from Football Outsiders and tell me who is number 1 on that list.

Eli can be goofy and easy to make fun of but he is a very good quarterback with a superbowl ring. Make no mistake about that.

by Route36 on Feb 19, 2010 11:51 AM EST up reply actions

Phillip Rivers and Shawn Merriman for Eli Manning. Take a look at Phillip Rivers numbers, then compare precious Eli’s numbers it isn’t even close. That is an awful trade. The only trade close is the Portis-Bailey trade.

The NY Eli Manning’s didn’t win the SB, Eli was a glorified Trent Dilfer that defense carried them through the playoffs. That defense carried the team, Eli did everything he could to blow it on that last drive. Several terrible throws.

by You don't have to be sweet, to be good on Feb 19, 2010 3:59 PM EST up reply actions

I'm with YDHTBSTBG (haha)

It was a bad trade.

And Eli is average. He got lucky with that Super Bowl.

Eli was a glorified Trent Dilfer that defense carried them through the playoffs.

Eli DID NOT win that game… the Patriots lost it. Asante missed a pick in the last drive and the Pats missed a sure-thing sack. Then Eli got credit for the win… for what!? For closing his eyes and chucking the ball in the air to David Tyree? Or for throwing a lob to a WIDE OPEN Burress after Ellis Hobbs got burnt?

I agree with you most of the time, Route, but with this I have to disagree. Eli has been very average.

I will admit one thing however… he is showing signs of improvement and could become a top 10 QB. But right now, I don’t think he is.

by Smitty2K3 on Feb 20, 2010 10:59 AM EST up reply actions

Even if Eli was a great QB. You gave up Phillip Rivers and Shawn Merriman. 2 legitimate superstars.

by You don't have to be sweet, to be good on Feb 20, 2010 12:26 PM EST up reply actions

I definitely agree Eli was NOT the main reason the Giants won the Super bowl. He still sucked back then. It was their dominant defense. I’m just looking at Eli’s past two seasons. Everyone thought he would suck even more without Plax(including me) but he didn’t. He actually had his best year. As you can see by the chart by the highly reputable Football Outsiders I linked above, according to them Eli is the BEST when coming from behind. I agree Philip Rivers is the better quarterback but to call to call it one of the worst trades of the decade is outrageous. The Giants won a Super bowl just 4 years after it and Rivers and the Chargers are still struggling to win playoff games.

by Route36 on Feb 20, 2010 1:15 PM EST up reply actions

LOL, I see two FAILS in that comment.

by Route36 on Feb 20, 2010 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

Gotta give Eli credit

where it’s due.

I also thought Eli would get worse without Plaxico, but he proved us wrong. He has certainly looked much better the past two years, with this past year being his most impressive year of his career (even though the Giants weren’t all that impressive).

But I hate when people give Eli so much credit for winning a Super Bowl. He did nothing to earn the credit he has received. That defense carried them through the playoffs and he got more than a couple lucky breaks on the last drive. Just think what people would be saying if the ball bounced a different way… if Asante intercepts that ball and returns it for a TD… if Eli trips while trying to break away from that sack… if David Tyree doesn’t catch that pass… if Ellis Hobbs does what he’s supposed to and prevents Plaxico from catching that TD. If any one of those things happen, Eli is the goat.

I know… if, if, if… you can’t look at things that way. I know what happened, happened. I’m just sayin’ QB’s are given way too much credit when their team wins and I’m tired of people saying Eli is an elite QB just because he won a SB. HE did not win the Super Bowl. The Giants did.

Portis/Bailey worked out for both sides

Portis carried that fucking team for 3 years

My "t" and "y" buttons are messed up so don't bitch at me about misspelling, I'm just saying.

by RadioheadbeatlesEagles on Feb 20, 2010 3:27 PM EST up reply actions

Where exactly did he carry them? He is a RB, you never trade a legitimate top flight CB and especially not for RB. RB’s are a dime a dozen, and they have an incredibly short shelf life. They also gave a up a 2nd round pick with Champ, making it even more stupid.

by You don't have to be sweet, to be good on Feb 20, 2010 4:11 PM EST up reply actions

wow throwing in a 2nd was stupid

and I agree with what you said about CB>RB because they are rarer. Still hard to say it didn;t work out for the Skins when Portis was pretty incredible for them.

So you’re saying that it’s Rivers’ fault that the Charges haven’t won a Super Bowl while suggesting we keep McNabb…?

by zfg on Feb 19, 2010 1:37 PM EST up reply actions

No, I’m suggesting you don’t trade away franchise quarterbacks.

by Route36 on Feb 19, 2010 2:20 PM EST up reply actions

Fair enough. I disagree that McNabb at this point in his career is a franchise quarterback, but even so, do you really think that swapping out Rivers for Brees would have won the Chargers a Super Bowl? He did have 2 picks in that playoff game, but he also completed nearly 70% of his passes.

by zfg on Feb 19, 2010 2:23 PM EST up reply actions

Possibly...

2 picks far outweigh a 70% completion. Besides, Rivers is not part of my point. I just wanted to show an ironic possibility.

by Route36 on Feb 19, 2010 3:35 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I don't think McNabb is "restricted" after next season

This offseason is unique because of different rules due to the uncapped year. After next season there will be a new agreement in place (either that or no football). We can assume McNabb will probably be unrestricted.

by Smallbugger on Feb 19, 2010 8:05 AM EST up reply actions

That’s correct, I think. The UFAs becoming RFAs only applies to players who have not been in the league for a certain number of years, IIRC. Whatever that number is, McNabb exceeds it by a lot.

by zfg on Feb 19, 2010 10:32 AM EST up reply actions

4 years with a CBA, 6 years without.

Let the beasting begin.

by TransplantedFan on Feb 19, 2010 11:25 AM EST up reply actions

No, I didn’t mean tender him as a restricted free agent. I meant franchise tag him, then trade him away like the Pats did with Matt Cassel,

by Route36 on Feb 19, 2010 11:37 AM EST up reply actions

Yeah! And if McNabb gets hurt you have Kolb if you don't trade him. If you do

you have Vick and I think you can get AJ Feeley back too. But you are totally correct!

by Trade Kolb on Feb 19, 2010 2:08 PM EST up reply actions

i see their point but...

apparently, the coaches think enough of kolb to be a good (possibly even great) qb in this league. but more importantly, $ seems to be the most important factor here. if we trade mcnabb now, we could get at least a 2nd rd pick (possibly even a 1st rd pick next year). if we wait one more season, the eagles have to fork out a roster bonus of ~$7mil and if mcnabb doesn’t have another stellar season, he’s trade value goes down.

if the eagles can somehow improve the defense and o-line, what kolb lacks in experience and mobility, he can make it up with his accuracy with another possible deep run through the playoffs. mcnabb is a good qb but he has shown over years to be an ineffective qb running the ‘west-coast’ offense (partial blame goes to andy reid’s reluctance to design the offense to mcnabb’s strengths).

as albert einstein once said, “insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”. thank you mcnabb for your services over the years, but it’s time to move on…

"Philly is the master at making back-up QB look great"

They make a comment that the Philly system makes QBs look better than they really are in the last part of that, but never translated it to maybe the Philly system has been making McNabb look good to, lol

by Smallbugger on Feb 19, 2010 7:48 AM EST reply actions

No, we actually run the ball when our backups come in for long periods of time. When McNabb is in we don’t, simple as that.

by You don't have to be sweet, to be good on Feb 19, 2010 11:39 AM EST up reply actions

Upon reflection

the situation in Philly is not as strong as suggested. Every QB has only 1 year on their contract. Every one has question marks, age, inexperience, or the many questions Vick brings. I can see packaging one of these guys with another pick to trade up – maybe a 2nd rounder with Kolb to get a good 1st, but otherwise, 2nd, 3rd, or lower is probably the best we’ll do here.

Why does everyone keep saying this??!?!?

Good QBs are rare. The eagles have 2, and one iffy one (Vick). Both of our good QBs are worth first round picks. Period.

Look at what teams like the Jets give up to get a good QB.

Anyone who says our QB’s are not worth a first is overvaluing draft picks.

by Clyde Simmons on Feb 19, 2010 9:40 AM EST up reply actions

agreed

we better get something nice in return for one or two of our starting caliber qb’s the exception is vick who i think warrants a 3rd or 4th rounder

by nocostyle on Feb 19, 2010 11:23 AM EST up reply actions

Again

1 year contracts! Big question marks!!!!!

McNabb – AGE 34!!!!! Injury History!!!!
Kolb – 2 career starts!!!!!! Not considered a top QB out of college!!!!!!!
Vick – Lots of off-field baggage!!!! Not an incredibly effective QB – certainly not a prototypical QB – even before jail!!!!

I grant that if any of our QBs were without said ???, or were under contract for more than 1 year, or both, they would be worth more. But they are not, and should not be considered as such.

So

i guess you think we are not going to get shit for our qb’s then. They must all be over rated and over valued by eagles fans and the eagles front office, based off theircontracts, age, and history.

“Look at what teams like the Jets give up to get a good QB.”

The jets gave up shit to draft Sanchez. They swapped 1st rd picks gave up a 2nd rder, a backup safety a backup dlineman and a 3rd string QB. so basically thats like if we were in that situation us trading Chris Clemons, Sean Jones, a 2nd rd pick and i guess vick although hes much better then ur avg 3rd string QB so maybe just say Dimichele the kid from temple we had in training camp, thats not alot to give up to get that franchise QB u need.

I’d take swapping firsts to move up 9+ slots and a 2ndrounder for McNabb.

What's a good QB?????

So what if Eli Manning won a Super Bowl…..so what. Does that mean he’s better than Dan Marino, Fran Tarkenton, Jim Kelly, Warren Moon, Dan Fouts…..all QBs who are in the Hall of Fame and not one won a Super Bowl. I’d take any of them over Eli any day of the week. To win a Super Bowl takes more than the QB. It takes the whole team to be clicking on all cyclinders. The year that the Eagles played New England in the Super Bowl, it was McNabb who brought the team back from 24-6 to take the lead 25-24…..and if was the third best defense in the league that gave up that lead to lose the game. McNabb got the Eagles the lead……and the defense couldn’t stop New England from scoring. If they had stopped New England, the Eagles would have been Super Bowl champs. The offense scores the points……..the defense gives up the points. Since when did McNabb play defense?? Maybe I missed him on the field…..maybe I didn’t see him. What position was he playing?? Can someone please tell me??
Even in those loses to the Cowgirls. Who gave up the points?? And at the end of 2008 when the Eagles played Arizona, a step away from the Super Bowl……who let Warner complete all those passes?? If I missed McNabb out there on defense again, someone please let me know. Dan Marino…..who some argue to be the best there ever was…..not a single damn Super Bowl win. Fran Tarkenton….who held several passing records….not a single damn Super Bowl win. Jim Kelly…..who made at least 3-4 Super Bowl appearances…..not a single damn Super Bowl win. Dan Fouts……slinging Dan coulnd’t win crap. Warren Moon…..who holds a few records and the ONLY QB to be inducted into both the NFL and Canadian Hall of Fame….not a single damn Super Bowl win, and barely a playoff win. Eli Manning….Rothlisburger…..I’d take McNabb over either one any day. Why were the Steelers, the previous Super Bowl champs, not in the playoffs this year??? When was the last time a Super Bowl champ didn’t at least make it to the playoffs the next year? And look at the Giants…..they haven’t been the same since their lucky Super Bowl win….and after Tikki Barber retired. You want Tony Romo……you can have him. You want Rothlesburger…..you can have him. You want Eli Manning….you can have him. And as an Eagles fan for well over 30 years…….you other so-called Eagles fans who keep criticizing McNabb…..get a life. Put down that beer, cheeesteak and hoagie. All that grease, oil, vinegar and alcohol has affect your brains. I’ve enjoyed the winning seasons that Andy and McNabb…..and Jim Johnson (rest in peace) has give me. And I expect them….along with McDermot….to give me a couple more winning seasons……only this time there will be a Super Bowl win involved…..and if there isn’t….so be it. But the rest of you critical nuts……maybe you should slit your wrist or leave town.
Gooooooooooo Eagles……………..

its all about the rings. Not stats. We just want to finally win one man you know. Maybe mcnabb can win one with us if he stays but if not then i will take my chances with Kolb. Either way i aint going nowheres as a fan. Im never putting down the beer! Thats life juice.
