A Safety Net...at the Safety Position

An article was released about a week ago entailing the problems the Eagles have on their offensive line and some potential things that could be done to make the situation better. The team’s Quarterback spot has also drawn a large (and probably unnecessary) amount of discussion, with tons of speculation and rumors flying around about the Birds’ passers. In this particular offseason piece, the Safety position, which was stocked with inconsistency in 2009, is examined similarly to the way the o-line was. Both a summary of what went wrong and right in the season, as well as a few possible ways to fix the issues, have been compiled; all made for the intentions of providing suggestions for a bit of a safety net…at the Safety position.

Last offseason, Sean Jones was added in free agency in hopes of becoming (at the very least) the short-term starter in the defensive backfield at the Free Safety spot. Previously a solid member of the Cleveland Browns’ secondary, the 27-year-old had been among the league’s top pass interceptors in terms of the past few years, and looked to have a quality first season in Philadelphia that would then potentially lead to a contract extension. However, Jones began and ended the season as a reserve, taking repetitions as the starting FS here and there throughout the season. Despite his 61 total tackles (good for 3rd overall on the team), the University of Georgia product failed to display a dominant sense of coverage skills, and has not been mentioned as one of the team’s top priorities this offseason (he is due to become an unrestricted free agent on March 5th).

At the other Safety spot, Quintin Mikell earned an appearance in the Pro-Bowl, but certainly did not have the best season of his career. Regardless of his team-high 90 tackles and decent total of 2 interceptions, the veteran seemed to lack a lot of leadership and ability to play at a consistent level. There is no doubt that he will be among the starting defensive backs in the 2010 season (barring a serious injury or unlikely transaction), but there is still room for improvement. There is always the possibility that Mikell will be moved over to the Free Safety spot, a place in which I believe he seems to be more comfortable.

As for the other contributors to the ‘09 Safety ordeal, rookie Macho Harris (pictured) and backup Quintin Demps took a lot of heat from the fan base for their mistakes, but still have potential. Harris surprised many when he opened the season as the starting FS, but injuries (among other things) led to his demotion in the depth chart. Demps, on the other hand, was slated to be the replacement for Brian Dawkins last offseason, but failed to impress the staff with his arrogance and poor work ethic. He gained some respect back during the season, for he was the team’s most consistent kick returner down the stretch, but remains a questionable member of the roster. Harris showed signs of immaturity with some bad game day decisions, but is undoubtedly someone who could make an impact in the future.

If not for what are likely to be failed Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations, top-tier defensive backs like O.J. Atogwe and Antoine Bethea would be easier to acquire in the free agency period. However, decent players remain in the upcoming pool of unemployed Safeties. Here are some notable names that should be considered when the market is opened and the Eagles will perhaps strike for a player to fill their “safety net” (in hopes of making the listed suggestions realistic, only players set to be unrestricted free agents under the CBA guidelines have been displayed):

  • Darren SharperAt 34, Sharper would be somewhat of a risky signing, especially for a team like the Eagles who has lately emphasized a youth movement on the roster. Despite his age, though, the veteran has managed 5 Pro-Bowl appearances and 4 All-Pro earnings over the course of his career, and looked brilliant in 2009 with the Super Bowl champion Saints. Not only did he record 9 interceptions (tied for best in the NFL) and record a trio of defensive scores, but the FS also notched an impressive 71 tackles, 51 of which were solo take-downs.
  • Ryan ClarkLike Sharper, Clark’s age poses a potential issue with the Eagles’ current philosophy (and also increases the risk of injury or lack of production). But he remains a decent free agent option, seeing he has had over 70 tackles in 3 of the last 4 years. His latest seasonal performance was clearly his best, for the Pittsburgh Steeler grabbed 3 interceptions, 89 tackles, and 8 pass deflections. He is also known for placing bone-jarring hits on opposing players, and has the ability to cover well down the field.
  • Hiram EugeneSigned as an undrafted free agent by the Raiders in 2006, Eugene is definitely not the flashiest Safety set to be available in free agency, but has a lot of potential. In the last 3 seasons (the only years that he has actually gotten opportunities on the field), the Louisiana Tech graduate has averaged roughly 40 tackles and recorded his first career interception in the 2009 campaign. He is best known by the Oakland fans for overcoming 1st-round Draft pick Michael Huff for the starting FS spot in the ‘07 season, and could provide the Eagles with a future option at the position. Then again, his presence would certainly not be overwhelming, and he might not be the answer the Birds are looking for.

Besides free agency, there is always the NFL Draft for acquiring players at a position of need. And while history has shown that taking Safeties early in the selection process typically does not work out well, there are some fine players from the back end of the secondary that will be available, and most likely at the Eagles’ spots on the Draft board. Below are some of those players (like the realistic factor in the free agency suggestions, Safeties projected to go very early in the 1st-round have not been included):

  • Taylor Mays: Some love him. Some hate him. Blessed with ideal size for a hard-hitting Free Safety, the product of USC has drawn major amounts of both praise and criticism. His tackling skills are extremely solid, and he is probably one of the most trustworthy players in the 2010 class in terms of players you’d rely on to halt a play. However, his coverage ability has been pointed out and proven to be weak in events such as the Senior Bowl. Mays possesses the size to play at the Linebacker position as well, so clearly he is a versatile rookie to-be. The only question is whether teams (especially the Eagles, who might be looking for a strong coverage man at the FS spot) are willing to take a chance on him.
  • Nate Allen: Projected to be taken in the 2nd round of the Draft, Allen would probably be available to the Eagles at least once, and might draw some serious consideration from them. He’s a bit smaller than Mays, but remains one of the best Safeties entering the league. A respectable 4-year collegiate career at South Florida, which included an impressive total of 216 tackles, has Allen on the radar of various teams.
  • Reshad Jones: Despite usually lining up as a Strong Safety, Jones is definitely among the underrated defensive backs heading into the 2010 Draft. With an imposing physical frame and ability to consistently tackle the ball-carrier hard, it’s easy to compare the graduate of Georgia a miniature Taylor Mays. However, he has shown a lot more promise in his coverage techniques, and appears to have a bright future in the NFL.

It’s likely we will have to continue to wait in this offseason to see how things actually develop, but I had hoped to provide you with what could become somewhat of a safety net…at the Safety position. Now, be sure to share your own thoughts on the situation.

Macho isn't the answer...

Now I like this guys physical presence, but I see him more of a CB.
I was hoping to see Demps more in his Sophomore; going into the season thinking the starting FS position was his, I continued to question his maturity and it didn’t help with him battling injuries throughout the season.
Jones was a slight disapointment, and I think it was more along the lines of his coverage ability…but was our best of three for the option.

Nate Allen is a guy I would love to see fall to us in the 2nd Round and is the best fit for our system. T Mays has an issue in covering, but is the most physical Safety in the draft.

Not jumping to any conclusions yet, wait and see what happens in FA as well as at the combine. As of right now, would like to go with (and hoping) that Allen falls to us in the 2nd Rd.

Due to his physical presence I actually see him as a SS.

Not sure if you’re talking on behalf of Mays which I would agree with you, but if it’s Nate Allen I disagree he was fantastic in coverage.

actually I was talking about Macho...

nate allen would make a good cover FS but I’d rather get Rolle b/c he’d read the playbook for 10min and understand all the complexities of JJ’s system.

oh…I don’t see Macho as a Strong Safety his weight class hardly fits the bill for Free Safety I see him better as a physical nickel or dimeback. He was pretty good at times when he played nickel filling in for Hanson. Well we’ll see it’s possible he could make a big improvement in year 2 even.

by fhqwagads on Feb 21, 2010 1:36 PM EST up reply actions

his physicallity would make him a good SS, there basically the ones who stop

the run and will play the “nickel/Dime CB” in base formations…

People have forgotten that we play Mikell more as a FS than usual b/c were slowly getting back to before Dawk’s coverage skills tanked(no disrespect to dawk)

I like

Nate Allen a lot. He will probably go early second out of our reach. Rashad Jones looked good on youtube. He would add to our return game possibly. Myron Rolle also is an intriguing guy. Highly intelligent, good physical skills, might not be ready to play after a year lay off. Someone else on here brought up Kam Chancellor. He has a physical mean presence on the field. I liked what I saw when watching him.

The combine will help in the evaluation process with these guys. They all look pretty good on their highlights. But they’re highlights. I’ll spend most my day at work reading about these guys(and listening to my interns cold call), maybe if I find enough good info I can add to this post by copy and pasting a collaboration of scouting reports. (Dsmith will attest to my inability to post acccurate medical info) But all thses guys are psychotic and suffer from dementia!

Im really high

on Reshad Jones. He will be there for us in the second round, and potentially could even fall to us in the third. Personally, I think he will be one of the better safeties that comes out of this class. I know thats kind of going out on a limb with the likes of Berry, Thomas and Mays coming out, but I really think, with a little bit of NFL coaching, he could be something special. Same goes for Allen, but I personally prefer Jones for the simple fact that we could grab him in the third round, while getting great value on other positions in rounds 1 and 2. I’d like to see Round 1 and 2 go OL/C, DE in no particular order and then grab Reshad Jones in the third. As far as LB goes, we could grab one latter on. I think Fokou will greatly improve and having Stew back makes a bigger difference then most fans seem to grasp. Then all we need to do is pick up Dunta Robinson and our defense is all of a sudden looking a hell of a lot better.

For Victor Harris

I don’t hate him like most on this board. He is just too raw right now. I can’t get mad at a rookie for making rookie mistakes (however, he does have to re-earn his nickname Macho in my opinion). I say let him sit behind Quintin for a few years, learn and pick up weight.

As for the draft: 1) I don’t want Taylor Mays here. He is too big a risk. People say “coverage can be worked on”, well that may be true, but its up to the player to apply it in which Mays has failed to do. He may be versatile, but I don’t want to take a risk on such an important position on the D especially when there is no one to man it.

                           2) I don’t dislike Nate Allen. But my problem with him is he is not physical enough for me. He is one of the best cover safeties in the draft, but does less than stellar against the run on a most of the time. I wouldn’t hate picking him, however.

                           3) I don’t know what to think of Reshad Jones. He makes a lot of big hits and is physical and can show flashes of good coverage here and there, but he is so inconsistent. A lot of times, he either makes a big play or not one at all. He is actually projected as a 3rd round pick. He could move up based on combine showing.

Still my top pick remains Morgan Burnett from GT. I’m not trying to make it seem like he’s my Micah Johnson (had to do it wild_eagles lol). I hear and read a lot of “He’s not overly impressive” or “He isn’t flashy.” Well the thing is, is that necessarily bad? While he may not be the stand-out type….you can’t really name too many things wrong with him. Most scouting articles I read say that he isn’t a stand out….but there is nothing bad to say. His only knocks are he tackles high and he can be over powered by tight ends at times. Otherwise, his coverage skills are as good as any players in the draft and he is a great tackler. Antoine Bethea isn’t the flashiest player either, yet how many would take him?

But that’s just my rant. I’m done.

morgan burnett is totally your micah johnson.

it’s okay. you just have “knowshon!” syndrome. we’ve seen it before.

No actually

Rolando McClain is my “Knoshown syndrome” but unlike Knowshon or Micah…I know we have no chance of getting him, so I decide not to press it. As I said before, its hard enough living 3 blocks from Eric Berry knowing he will never be in an Eagles uniform, I don’t want to enter a depression by adding Rolando to that category. So I decided to face the truth as early as possible lol

by macjack09 on Feb 18, 2010 11:43 PM EST up reply actions

my knowshon syndrome is

Earl Thomas. He at least has a factual possibility of being drafted by us. Hes a playmaker.

by nocostyle on Feb 19, 2010 7:22 PM EST up reply actions

Earl Thomas scares me

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a UT fan (ironically Alabama and Texas are my favorite schools). But when it comes down to scouting for my team I drop all bias and look at them. I love Earl Thomas to death, but I just can’t really see him succeeding in the Eagles system as a FS. Yes he is a play maker (mainly a ball hawk), but isn’t all around which is what the FS has to be in the Eagles system. I see him moving to CB when he gets into the NFL based on the team. If he were drafted by the Steelers or Texans, he would probably be asked to play coverage only. Against Bama, he didn’t have the best game having to come down and support the run as much as he had to. Plus, he his latest measurables came out at 5-10 185 lbs. Size doesn’t usually play a big factor when I scout a player, but in Thomas’ case, one has to have the slightest hesitance knowing that considering the position he is going out for. If he is drafted by us, I won’t be mad. But he seriously has to put on some pounds (at least round the 200 range).

I'd take Sharper out of those FA's, but he isn't going anywhere.

The Saints are gonna get him back and he wants to come back, so he’s out. I say Rolle in the 3rd or 4th. I like him a lot and it allows us to focus on other areas/ value players early on.

We couldnt sign sharper. What a slap in the face that would be to dawkins. “Were not giving you a 2 year deal because your old but we’ll sign this guy because he played well on a superbowl winning team at 34 years old.”

Sharper will be resigned or franchised. It is hard to speculate draft positions before the combine. If Myron Rolle comes in and puts up very good combine numbers, his stock will rapidly rise, and it is likely he is gone in the top 2 rounds.

the rams want a qb. could we trade for the rights to atogwe? would you do that?

by Limbotim on Feb 20, 2010 8:57 PM EST reply actions

depending

on which QB, yes. If it was vick for atogwe straight up in a heart beat. If it was Mcnabb, they would have to include a draft pick. Nothing for Kolb. I still would prefer to have McNabb start for us this year, but if we can get a 2nd and atogwe from the Rams, how can you not pull that trigger?
