Eagles could cut Stacy Andrews
Philly.com is reporting that Stacy Andrews could very well be on his way out...
While Eagles coach Andy Reid has said he thinks Andrews' lack of production was mainly the result of his slow recovery from the torn ACL, his poor play raised enough doubts within the organization that there is little chance he will be back with the team unless he agrees to restructure his deal, sources close to the situation confirmed to the Daily News.
While it probably is fair to say that much of Stacy's troubles had do with the fact that he was less than a year removed from tearing up his knee, the $5.5 million he got last year and the $7.6 million he's scheduled to receive next year is a lot for a guy who contributed absolutely nothing.
Still, it's not as if his injury was a secret. If I remember right, Andrews literally came to town on crutches right? It's easy to put all the blame on him and repeat the tired old "Andrews sisters" jokes... but isn't this a case of buyer beware? The Eagles paid a ton of money to an already injured player and now want that player to essentially give back some because he was injured. Stacy didn't hide his injury and the Eagles had every opportunity to check him out and consult with their doctors. I'm glad the NFL labor situation is such that a team can make up for it's mistakes(unlike the NBA) but I honestly wonder whether Andrews is getting a bit screwed here.
All that said, I obviously don't know as much about his injury and practice habits as the coaching staff does. It's entirely possible that his struggles this year went beyond his injury and their dissatisfaction with him was about more than just his inability to heal quicker.

I’m going to agree with JasonB on this one. I feel like the Eagles FO may have whiffed badly on Stacy and now they’re trying to save some face. They paid well-above market value for the guy and now are trying to make up for it.
That being said, I really have a hard time blaming a player for struggling when he was less than a year removed from major knee surgery. The Eagles should have given Stacy a “prove it” contract with the intention of altering the deal if/when he did prove it. Now, I feel like they are trying to do that in reverse order.
Besides, far as I’m concerned, the much more glaring issue that needs to be dealt with is the other S. Andrews on the team.
Let the beasting begin.

I think they did that….they can cut Stacy right now without taking a salary cap hit.
by Clyde Simmons on Feb 17, 2010 2:22 PM EST up reply actions
Yep
The contract structure indicates pretty clearly (at least to me) that it was a “prove it” contract. It was a year-to-year contract. Even if there was a 2010 cap, there was no guaranteed money, so there wasn’t going to be a cap hit regardless.
Anyways, I won’t lose any sleep over his being cut.
Oh, I won’t be sorry if he gets cut either. I’d rather not have to draft more O-linemen (which, I feel like we’ll be seeing 2 early draft picks of interior linemen), but it still seems like they offered Stacy a lot of money for a prove-it deal. Still, I’m glad the FO is largely protected from him.
Let the beasting begin.

I don't see anyone crying over this one

well I had surgery on my foot
as I had told you guys before. But usually i think I can do anything, like drive to Philly after surgery on my right foot but it just wasn’t possible. I’ve been out of commission for a month. Had off work for a month.. just got back this week. Trust and believe, I missed out and I’m so upset about it!! So start planning the next one and this time I’ll be able to come and compete!

Would anybody be surprised if the Birds
went O-Line in the first round of the draft this year? Sure LB would be nice, but with the team hurting from the center all the way to Winston, I expect to see the Eagles moving up to pick Shawn Andrews the Sequel.
meh
we have more pressing needs. The Eagles will always go best available player over position of need but I don’t see a CB being the best player available at our Pick.

I'm not sure I agree that the Eagles go "best available"...
I think Maclin was a need pick.
I’m sure Laws and DeSean were need picks.
I think Kolb was a need pick.
Bunkley, Patterson, Andrews…
Seems to me that Eagles anticipate need very well, they just don’t like to reach in the draft…
Maclin was a gift at the spot we drafted him at. A lot of people had him as the #2 WR in the draft and likely going in the top 10. Luckily the Raiders have a full on case of “Al Davis is a crazy SOB” and they went with the guy who ran the fastest 40 time in the draft. That let the 49’ers take Crabtree, which then caused Maclin to drop. Word was the Giants were also trying to trade up to grab Maclin and thats part of the reason we moved up. So we wouldn’t get leapfrogged.
Let the beasting begin.

Agreed
Maclin was not a need pick, although he did fulfill a need. He was far and away the best player available at the time.

I agree that at the time it didn’t seem like we needed Maclin, but our #2 wideout going into last season was Kevin Curtis. The dude who spent several weeks in ‘08 with a sports hernia…
I’m sure that Eagles brass knew exactly where Curtis was in his recovery and anticipated needing another starting quality WR. Perhaps not last season, but their foresight was really well rewarded.
As far as best player available, I’m pretty sure Percy Harvin won rookie of the year – Vikings pick at 22. Harvin got that award in large part due to his return ability, but the Eagles didn’t need a dynamic returner so Maclin was more of a need pick…
I won’t be surprised with anybody the Eagles pick. I was surprised when they drafted Kolb in ’07, Maclin last year, Lito and Sheldon when they already had Vincent and Taylor, so we should all know by now that the Eagles are incredibly unpredictable… OK, maybe a kicker, long snapper, or punter would surprise me in the 1st round – But other than that, nothing would surprise me.
Anyway, OL is a waaaay bigger need than LB, in my opinion, and I can think of a few others I’d put over LB as well. But with that said, I think the Eagles stick to their tried and true philosophy of drafting the best available player, no matter what the position.
I won’t be surprised with anybody the Eagles pick.
Me either.
LB tops my list of needs for the D with FS a close second, but O-Line tops my list of needs period.
I think that the Birds should make offers to Karlos Dansby and Darren Sharper in FA if the opportunity presents itself. Unless there’s somebody the Birds really like out there, O-Line is one of the positions where rookies regularly offer up significant contributions in their first year esp. first round rookies…
linebacker is just a sexier pick...
i honestly believe that the game is won on the lines. i think most people would like to see an lb or a safety picked in the first round, because the production is more visible.
Would love to see Dansby with the Eagles
Or Gary Brackett

Abolutely agree.
They’ll probably wind up with a QB, a WR a Place Kicker, a Long Snapper, and a DT.
:)
Here's the deal
If they go OL heavy in the draft this year – or basically draft any kind of non-defensive position in the first round of the draft – we can write them off as contenders from the start.
The defense has so many holes at every position (DE, LB, FS, CB depth) that unless they can maximize the effectiveness of the OL they already have, and instead sink all of their draft and free agency resources into the defense, they will be scorched next year by elite offenses.
To truly be a contender next year (or hell, even the next five years) they need to have the most optimistic of draft / free agency scenarios to transpire: draft a no-miss impact defensive player in the first round, sign at least one impact defensive player in free agency, and stabilize the OL (preferably with the return of Shawn Andrews).
If I see them draft an offensive lineman in the first round, I know they’re screwed next year.
If they go OL heavy in the draft this year – or basically draft any kind of non-defensive position in the first round of the draft – we can write them off as contenders from the start.
That’s a bit of an overreaction. Quite frankly, if we’re depending on any rookie to save our season, we were never anywhere near contenders in the first place.
The Eagles are smart – They simply won’t reach for a need, and they draft with the idea in mind that their picks will be major contributors in 2-3 years, not immediately. If they get immediate contributions, great. But they won’t take a less talented player just because they may have a hole at that particular position… and they shouldn’t.
All kidding aside...
BD is quite correct about the draft, Myron is correct about having the OL. If we can get even one the Andrews brothers and J. Jackson squared away, there’s no need to address the OL for years.
If they can't grab Iupati
I wouldn’t be surprised to see them take Maurkice Pouncey. He can play G and C, and most realistic mocks have him in the mid-to-late 20s
whoever drafts lupati
is gonna see a lot of yellow on the field…they were talking bout him in the draft on nfl network, he grabs A LOT…doesn’t extend his arms…

A lot of little kids grab their junk and do a pee pee dance when they have to piss, instead of just going to the bathroom. That’s what you could have meant.
now i know it's the offseason...
we’re discussing a potential draft picks bladder…

Thank God.
This guy can’t play a little bit. And as far as the “Andrews Sisters” jokes go, they’re right on. The jokes aren’t old. And Shawn is going to be the next Andrews sister to Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy his way the hell out of town.
...But if he pulls the rug on his quarterback, Reid must do it knowing that he let McNabb down more than McNabb ever let him down.

Its run its course
Especially since we really dont know why Stacy was so unproductive or if Shawn really was being lazy or not.
E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!
according to stacy
during his interview…he said it wasn’t his knee, but learning the new system. i hope they restructure and he’s learned the eagles system. it would be nice to see him contribute…..they can do whatever w/ shawn, get him healthy for a season so he can be traded.

There’s one big difference though. “McRib” is healthy and has been playing reasonably well, so the name’s old news. The Andrews “sisters” were still worthless to the team as of their last opportunites to contribute. I’m all for the jokes until they are either gone, or start performing.
If they get the Andrews Sisters the fuck out of town?
Then bombs away, bitches. Bombs away.

Andy brought this guy in solely to please Shawn
Andy knows that Shawn Andrews has the potential to be the best guard in the NFL – he showed how great he could be when he had an All-Pro year in 2006.
Andy wants the All-Pro Shawn Andrews to show up again so badly ( I don’t blame him ) that he caters to his whims by doing ridiculous stuff like signing his ineffective brother Stacy to a contract, and signing his former teammate Jason Peters.
Who knows if Andy is willing to cut ties with Shawn – I think Andy is just too deeply in love with his potential to cut his ties even after all of this nonsense – but cutting Stacy will certain deepen the rift between Shawn and the rest of the team.
Or does the thought of Shawn dragging half the Eagles D-line
down field in a Redskins or Giants uniform bother Andy? Might be cheaper to keep her.

The fatman's got jokes...
From JasonB’s article last April:
“…This offseason we have added two young, top-flight offensive linemen in Jason and Stacy Andrews.”
And Jason’s got jokes:
I don’t really think so. Remember back to when Stacy was signed? Andy wouldn’t say whether he’d be playing RT or RG back then… In fact he said several times that a big reason they signed him was because he could play either.
And NPK’s got jokes:
hes [Shawn Andrews] definitely the most agile of our lineman and with two backs that love the outside id love seeing him rolling out leading the way with weaver to back him up … grab your syrup fellas cause were gonna be seeing pancakes all season !
Can we PLEASE all just admit that neither of the Andrews sisters will play here ever again and move on so we can rebuild the O-line without their distractions?
...But if he pulls the rug on his quarterback, Reid must do it knowing that he let McNabb down more than McNabb ever let him down.
Phil Sheridan--Philadelphia Inquirer
It proves again
That the NFL should NEVER have guaranteed contracts and, in fact, should make every contract incentive based. MLB and NBA are nuts to have guaranteed contracts.
Your nuts
So players should play a sport that has been proven to inflict significant medical complications on them after their career which include the real possibility of a short lifespan?
Do you pay good money to see Jeffrey Lurie or the players? I would much rather have my money go to the people responsible for the product I am interested in seeing than a multi-millionaire/billionaire who I am indifferent to at best.
"Minor restructuring"
Is that is the extent to his contract restructuring that Andrews is willing to engage in (minor tweaking of his salary next year and no real slash in his bonus money), he is as good as gone.
Might as well cut him now
End the uncertainty and waiting and save the money.
Same goes for his brother.
Why keep them for a second year straight, paying them millions, on the off chance they might play and play well, when even the first is by no means certain?
Plan for a future line and develop it without including them in the equation.
