Anybody Hungry for Peppers?

Welcome to the off-season folks! I was looking to see if anybody posted anything soley about Julius Peppers, but I haven't seen such an article on this site yet, beside some references in Joe_D's article about prediction. I don't post a lot on this site, but I do check it daily and I respect the posts and comments you guys write. Thanks for that, I really appreciate having new Eagles news and opinions on a daily basis. Ok, enough man-loving, on to the story at hand...

In an article, NFL.com has said the Eagles could be interested in Mr. Pepprs and ESPN.com has also linked the 30 year old DE  to the Eagles in their "insider" section of the web-site. Obviously it is all rumors and speculation at this point, but it is definintely an interesting concept to grab ahold of. As we all know, we need much more production from our defensive line. Julius Peppers offers a great compliment to Trent Cole. However, they both play RDE so one of them would have to switch to the left, which I don't think should be too much of a problem. I realize Peppers has a tendancy to be a little inconsistant over the years (2.5 sacks in 2007 to 14.5 sacks in 2008), but there is no denying that he has the talent and potential to help this team out a heck of a lot. I would take him over any of our DE's at this point in their careers (besides Cole, obviously). Sure, he's a high-profile name thus getting more attention, but let's not forget that this man had 10.5 sacks last season and made the Prow-Bowl.

More after the jump

Star-divide

Ok, let's do a little bit of comparisons..

2009 Stats:

Trent Cole -          12.5 Sacks   57 Tackles   2FF    0 INT   Age: 27

Victor Abiamiri - 2.0 Sacks     16 Tackles   1 FF    0 INT   Age: 24

Jason Babin -      2.5 Sacks    16 Tackles    0 FF   0 INT   Age: 29

Chris Clemons - 3.0 Sacks     11 Tackles    0 FF   0 INT   Age: 28

Darren Howard - 6.5 Sacks    24 Tackles    2 FF   0 INT   Age: 32

Juqua Parker -    8.0 Sacks    34 Tackles    2 FF   0 INT   Age: 31

Julius Peppers - 10.5 Sacks   42 Tackles   5 FF   2 INT   Age: 30

I realize I'm comparing these guys just on 1 season, but this is very much a "what have you done for me lately" league, so I think it makes sense to use these stats. Now, I realize that not all of our players are starters like Peppers, but wow! I guess the best way to draw conclusions is to compare him to Parker. Make whatever conclusions you want from this data, but I feel the numbers do the talking. Aside from the double digit sack number, two interceptions by a defensive end is just amazing! And it's not like it's something new to him, the man has 6 career interceptions, so that wingspan adds an extra element of talent we haven't seen too often here in Philly. Even beyond the interceptions, he had 5 FF (more than double the amount of our 3 best guys). Winning the turnover battle is key to winning football games and Peppers accounted for about 7 turnovers himself (not sure how many of those FF were recovered). And finally, the age dilemma. With what seems to be a youth movement in Philadelphia, it would seem uncharacteristic to sign an aging DE. But if you look at the ages of these guys, they are all about the same age with the exceptions of Abiamiri and Cole. Why not sign him to a 3-year deal. I'm pretty sure he has at least 3 good seasons left in the tank and he's a healthy guy, only missing 6 games his entire career. This is unrelated, but that's pretty much the same as 1 season for Brian Westbrook!

Ok, I'm going to get off my Julius Peppers rant here soon. Just a few more points to ponder...I feel that Andy Reid and the FO could definitely pull the trigger and get this guy. We've made big splashes in free agency the past few years and I feel DE is a pretty big need for this team. Having another elite pass rusher would relieve some of the stress of our DBs out there, who struggled last season with quaterbacks having so much time to throw the football against us. Week in and week out we were handled at the line of scrimmage. With Trent and Julius possibly getting doubled, that can free some blockers from our DTs and clear some lanes for our LBs on their blitzes as well. We could arguably have the best DE tandem in the league with these two guys. I still have hope for Abiamiri, but the kid just cannot seem to stay healthy. I say we still get a DE or two in the draft to add some youth, but there is no way all the guys listed above will be coming back. In my opinion, we sign Peppers, get some youth, and trade a guy or two to bolster up this defensive line.

I'll turn it to you guys now. What do you think? Does it seem rational to make this move? Remember, I respect all of your opinions, so please return the favor to me. Thanks guys and happy posting!

i dont want him

he wants to play in a 3-4, too inconsistent, too much money, and a good draft class this year on the defensive end

id rather roll the dice on a draft pick or two than roll the dice and the brinks truck up for a proven 30 yr old

I absolutely decline to offer my opinion on or read any posts about the McNabb v. Kolb debacle. Those posts never end and I choose to sit back and wait to see what happens. This is going to be a long offseason.

A 3-4 DE is what the Eagles need for our style of DE

Kearse was a failure in Philly because we ask out DEs to play run first and engage the OT on most downs, not just run around them. Kearse only wanted to rush the passer…

Peppers being a 3-4 DE is used to playing the run first and engaging and then shedding blocks.

He’d be great… the major question is at what price and for how long/ how much guaranteed and back loaded can we make the deal.

by Smallbugger on Feb 10, 2010 2:28 PM EST up reply actions

Peppers is NOT a 3-4 DE. I don’t know where you got that from.

About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.

by IronHank on Feb 10, 2010 3:13 PM EST up reply actions

Drafting a DE is scary though

Its the one position of the NFL I think that should be traded for. Since the 2005 NFL Draft (including this last one), 17 DEs have been drafted in the first round, only 1 has been to the Pro Bowl and he didn’t even do it as a DE (Brian Orakpo). And since 2005, the Eagles have drafted 4 defensive ends…only 1 has been to the Pro Bowl (Cole). Its too risky of a position to rely on by drafting.

Consider our last 2

Abiamiri (2nd round) who has dealt with some injuries, but overall has failed to meet expectations

Bryan Smith (3rd round) who didn’t even make the team this year

On The Fence

If we sign him, I can’t say I wouldn’t be ecstatic about it.

But having said that, he’s not a guy I’m fiening for. He’s not a guy I’d be disappointed about if we didn’t get him. He’s going to want way too much money and he’s on the downward end of his career. He certainly is a good player and an obvious upgrade over JP/Clemons/Babin/Howard/all-of-the-above, but is he worth quarterback-type money? Definitely not.

If we sign him, great. If not, that’s probably even better for us in the long run.

by Smitty2K3 on Feb 10, 2010 2:14 PM EST reply actions

i'm on the fence too...

he seems like the type of guy who is just looking for a pay day. he may be a jevon kearse type guy where he’ll get his money and then we’ll get only one good year out of him. i’d rather have kampman to be honest.

that “good year” was ’04, and we went to the SB…ill take one good year if thats what we get…and this time get that ring!!!!!!!!

We all want to upgrade...

..but is Julius Peppers gunna be our man from here until 4 years from now? Will he do that dreaded “off-play” too many times as an Eagle?? Or will he be the dominating force we all DREAM about???

I want our Eagles to be the best we can be…and possibly there is a way we can slide Peppers in “under the radar” bc of this CBA. If we can load up a bunch of money up front (play sneaky with these CBA rules) yet keep his yearly pay low, then we could use this CBA to our advantage!! But if this will hinder us for years to come, let’s focus on the draft.

Anybody see the article of Kolb for Shaun Rogers!?!?!?! Im very intrigued about this. Keep McNabb another 2 years with Vick or sign Feely and put a dominator in our defense…..MAKES SENSE TO ME!!!!

im on this wagon...

he’s my number one want….everything else can be had in the draft. a dominant DE across from cole would be an instant upgrade to our defense and take it to the top teir in the league where it belongs. a front 4 that can get pressure will make any hole in our defense, at LB or FS, look that much smaller…

draft a FS and LB with our first two picks, in whatever order you like, and id be happy with whatever else our FO does.

It's all about value

I want upgrades everywhere DEPENDING on what we have to give up for them…

it’s the same with our QB’s…I’d prefer to keep Kolb, but if someone offers the right price, I’d trade him.

In the NFL, everyone has a price.

ha, never got to my point

I think you’re right…Peppers is probably going to want more money than he’s worth to us. We need an upgrade at that position, but we have some other guys we need sign (Weaver and Avant…), unless we trade McNabb to free up money (I guess Westy retiring/getting cut would free up a good amount of money too)

if westy was cut (don’t know the cap hit) or traded, you could pay avant/weaver w/ the money he was to receive alone….

Westy either stays and restructures his contract for less money, gets traded to someone

who’s desperate for a RB(Lions, CHI maybe) or he gets cut.

I dont think he’ll restructure his contract, he has to much pride and that’d be admitting he cannot do what he’s done anymore.

The 2nd one isnt good either, we’d want to much for him considering his injuries and age.

the 3rd one’s the best option.

No one's gonna trade with his contract

He needs to realize that he’s not going to make $7.5M next year from the Eagles, or from ANYONE for that matter. He’ll either restructure to play with us, retire, or get cut, in which case someone will undoubtedly pick him up, but for WAY less money than the $7.5M of his contract, and probably less money than the Eagles were willing to pay him in a restructured deal

Only what I think...

There’s a chance someone pays him more than we’re willing to pay him. That’s why I think he’ll ask to be cut to test the market before he agrees to restructure. And if he doesn’t get a better offer from another team then he’ll come back to us.

by Smitty2K3 on Feb 11, 2010 4:56 PM EST up reply actions

there’s no reason for him not to test the market before agreeing to a restructure

I’m actually okay with letting Avant go if it means signing a guy like Peppers or getting another big upgrade somewhere else.

I love Avant, but he’s only worth 3rd WR money… nothing more. If signing him means we miss out on another key position upgrade then let him walk.

So if he deserves the money, let him have it. Someone is bounded to offer him some rediculous contract, but if we can get him for a fair (but obviously large price), I say we go for it, especially if we decide to bring Mcnabb back.

by Team Serbia on Feb 10, 2010 2:35 PM EST reply actions

I would like it, but it would be scary

we would probably have to sign him for around 5 years, and pay him somewhere between 12-15 million a year. Perhaps there’s a way to front load the contract so we eat alot of the cap space next season when there isnt a cap.

If he turns out to be a lazy fuck after getting paid, it will kill the cap. so I dunno, its tough. I don’t think it will happen because andy is not a fan of 30+ year old players and handing him one of the biggest contracts in the nfl is not very appealing.

by Tbot86 on Feb 10, 2010 2:38 PM EST reply actions

I want him.

He would make our D-Line among the best, if not the best in the league. I like the sound of a 3 year deal with a mid-round draft pick of a DE to develop behind Peppers. It frees up the earlier draft picks for other need areas or quality picks if someone falls. The only way I don’t want him is if it means losing Avant and/or Weaver.

by Smitty2K3 on Feb 10, 2010 4:28 PM EST up reply actions

I would love it

For one…the 2.5 sack year he played injured the entire year.

Everyone says he is inconsistent and this and that. Well remember Randy Moss played for the Oakland Raiders and people said he fell off then he signed with the Pats and was a top 3 receiver again. I think motivation plays a big part in it. I think the fact that he didn’t want to play for the Panthers brought on the “inconsistent” tag. But if 10.5 sacks this year is “inconsistent,” I’ll take that inconsistency. Another thing is people say he will command “top dollar.” I don’t believe he’ll be asking for a 12-15 million dollar price tag, and even if he does, the chances of him getting that are very slim. The fact remains he is not getting any younger and he might even have to change schemes (especially if he goes to a 3-4). Regardless if you don’t like him or do, the fact remains his name alone will demand attention from defensive coordinators and that will open up more opportunities for Cole, Patterson, and Bunkley.

cap space...

i know there’s no cap next year, but for the years after….and for the people like weaver/avant we have to resign…and restructure jackson…we could cut that list of DE’s in half…

He was always a little bit underrated by the guys on this site. Yeah, I know he’s not great but he has been very solid for us.

About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.

by IronHank on Feb 10, 2010 4:21 PM EST up reply actions

yo, they actually have him at 8.5 sacks on the season per the eagles website, that only puts him 2 sacks

below Peppers and he did that in about 2/3 the playing time Peppers did… I dont think our lack of pass rush so so much not having a LDE, im begining to think it was our lack of LB’s, in the past when our Pass rush has been sucessful its more been someone like Jaqua stirring the pot, Cole blowing up that left side and our LB’s going for blood, this past year our LB’s were sub-par and we couldnt blitz them as much as we wanted, remember with JJ we always sent more that the O could account for but this year we often were outnumbered when it came to us getting after the QB..

Im begining to think that kicking JP to the curb and getting some guy for big bucks is gonna be a bad idea, right now I’d rather draft one in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th and develope them.

Cole + Peppers

= Best DE tandem in the league.

Is that worth Haynesworth-type money though? Ehhhh… I don’t know.

by Smitty2K3 on Feb 10, 2010 4:30 PM EST reply actions

Yes.

It will mean more interceptions, more pressure up the middle (production from Bunkley and Patterson from double teams), better linebacker play, and fewer blitzes needing to be dialed up because we can now get pressure from the front four.

Absolutely Agreed

That was definitely the point I was making in my post. I think that one position could actually help out the entire defense more than people think.

by EZ55 on Feb 10, 2010 4:44 PM EST up reply actions

exactly

thats what i said a lil farther up….a solid front 4 will make any holes on defense, lb or fs, look that much smaller…

Ehh, no. not to just one of them..

if were were to give haynesworth like money to a tandum like that we’d have to split it up and I’d give the bigger chunk to Cole considering he had more sacks, and peppers would never go for that..

Peppers is to old to be given haynesworth like money.

He is not going to get Haynesworth like money.

Daniel Snyder already paid Haynesworth Haynesworth-like money. With the uncertainity about the lockout in 2011 and the Mayan Apocalypse in 2012, I doubt the pursestrings are going to be that loose.

NO WAY

He’s up in age, He’ll probably be a big hit to the cap, and we still have Abiamiri and parker (i know they’re not game changers but they are very solid players). Save the money for a DEFENSIVE BACK. Just look at what happened with Haynesworth this year! The overall defense needs to improve, but first we need a good safety to run the show in the secondary.

It likely means they are trying to load up for one last blow out and McNabb will be back for one last ride.

by MG77 on Feb 11, 2010 1:38 AM EST reply actions

True

If they sign Peppers, they keep McNabb.

If they trade McNabb, they don’t sign Peppers and draft a DE high in the draft.

by Smitty2K3 on Feb 11, 2010 9:00 AM EST up reply actions

Eagles only get one High priced UFA

I just want to remind all Eagle fans that they are restricted in how many Unrestricted free agents they can sign this year. You can have one FA which you pay more than 5 million dollars, first year salary. If you go after Peppers don’t forget that you have used up your high priced option. You can sign all the UFA’s you want that are less than 3 million ,first year salary. First year salary includes signing bonus’s so that isn’t much money.
Good luck in your quest.

At first I was against this, so I decided to do a little research

Peppers is older and he is going to command a high price, something we all know the Eagles FO isn’t real big on. So I decided to see if Peppers would be worth it as far as our division goes and now I am saying yes. All these stats are without playing them in playoffs.

Against Washington in 2 career games: 6 tackles and 3 sacks
Against New York in 4 career games: 10 tackles 3 sacks
Against Dallas in 5 career games: 15 tackles 7 sacks

Now this is all when he has been the main focus of their offensive line. They can’t do that if he came here. Not unless they want to help Coles break the single season sack record. These 2 on the ends could cause some serious damage. Those Dallas numbers are awesome. Anytime you can make one of their gay ass QB’s eat dirt, it’s always a huge ass plus with me. The other thing. I see the want to trade for Rogers but how about Wilfork instead? He doesn’t want to play for the Pats because they keep disrespecting him. he is relatively young. Huge and strong. And he would probably only cost us some draft picks, thus we can keep Kolb. I say Wilfork >Rogers.

Sorry had to add something else

If we truly want to make that last push with McNabb, we definetely need to spend the cash in FA this year and I think if they are willing to, our starting Def, could look like this.

                                                 Peppers Wilfork Bunkley Coles

  Samuel Weatherspoon/ Bradley Witherspoon Brown
                                       Bowman

                                       Mikell Kerry Rhodes/Antonio Bethea

Wilfork?

They’re not signing Peppers AND Wilfork… no chance.

Also...

How are they going to draft Weatherspoon and Bowman while also signing/trading for one of Kerry Rhodes or Antoine Bethea?

This is the NFL… not Madden.

by Smitty2K3 on Feb 13, 2010 11:00 AM EST up reply actions

No I meant either Weatherspoon or Bowman

I know they can’t get both, but In an uncapped year, if they really want to make that push, it is not outside the realm of possibility to get both Wilfork and Peppers

It’s pretty darn close to being outside the realm of possibility… it’s sounding like teams aren’t going to spend any more than they have been, or do anything outrageous just because there’s no cap. The Steelers said they’re going to make moves as if there is a cap and I expect good organizations like the Eagles to do the same.

by Smitty2K3 on Feb 14, 2010 9:23 AM EST up reply actions

That is a very valid point

I would expect the Eagles to maintain the business side of things, however… If they keep McNabb and decide to make one more push towards the superbowl before putting the team into the untested hands of Kolb, I think it behooves them to open up their purses this year and really build up our defense to the best it can be. In essence try to buy the superbowl. I’m not saying they will. I’m not saying they can. But I would at least like them to explore the possibilty. Believe me, I love how our front office keeps the cap under control, but if they decide to go the other route, I am all for that too and am certain that they will be able to do it responsibly.
