Did Jeremy Maclin have as good a rookie season as DeSean Jackson?

From a purely statistical standpoint, one could make the argument that Jeremy Maclin had the better rookie season.  If you look at their numbers at quick glance, you'll see that our dynamic WR tandem had the following numbers during the regular season in their rookie years...

DeSean Jackson - 62 catches, 912 yards, 2 TD

Jeremy Maclin - 55 catches, 762 yards, 4 TD

So Jackson had the better statistical season, right?  On the surface, yes.  However, if you factor in that Jackson played a full 19 games his rookie season (including the playoffs), whereas Maclin only played a full 13, the numbers might tell a different story.  A deeper look after the jump...

Including the playoffs, Jackson finished his rookie season with the following numbers...

19 games (19 starts) - 73 catches, 1,119 yards, 3 TD

As his game log shows, Jackson got off to a very fast start, as he put up consecutive 100-yard games after being inserted into the starting lineup earlier than expected due to an injury depleted WR corps.  The rest of the season, his receiving numbers were solid, but not spectacular.

Next, Jeremy Maclin...

The beginning of Jeremy Maclin's rookie season was different from Jackson's in that he wasn't forced into the starting lineup Week 1.  He didn't start until Week 3, and saw very limited action the first 2 weeks against the Panthers and Saints.  As a result, he only had 12 yards through 2 weeks, as compared to Jackson's 216.  Also worth noting is that Maclin tore plantar fascia tissue along the bottom of his left foot in the first quarter of the Week 14 game vs the Giants, and he was forced to miss the rest of that game as well as the entire game the next week vs the 49ers.

Including the playoffs, Maclin finished his rookie season with the following numbers...

16 games (14 starts) - 62 catches, 908 yards, 5 TD

There's certainly no argument that the Eagles have 2 excellent, young WR's.  But just for fun, let's handicap Maclin's rookie season by throwing out Weeks 1 and 2 (since he didn't start them), and Weeks 14 and 15 (which he missed due to injury), and here's the comparsion...

Jackson - 19 games, 73 catches, 1,119 yards, 3 TD

Maclin - 13 games, 60 catches, 896 yards, 5 TD

On a per game basis, here's how that looks...

Jackson - 3.82 catches, 58.9 yards, 0.16 TD

Maclin - 4.62 catches, 68.9 yards, 0.38 TD

Maclin's per game numbers (handicapped, of course) are better.  Obviously, there are other factors, to consider, such as...

- In DeSean Jackson's rookie season, the receiver with the most yards after Jackson was the legendary Hank Baskett (440 yards), so Jackson was getting more attention from opposing defenses.  Maclin's WR counterpart obviously was Jackson, and Brent Celek also emerged as a great weapon, whereas Jackson's TE was the combination of a yet-to-be-great Celek and the God-awful LJ Smith.

- Jackson was a better weapon on rushing plays (96 yards and a TD), compared to Maclin's 2 rushes for -7 yards.

- This sort of doesn't factor into the comparison, since we're looking them only as WR's, but it's worth noting that Jackson was the far better weapon in the return game.

Those are silly stats

Maclin had a good rookie season and I expect him to be a great player but Jackson clearly had the better rookie season. He showed glimpses of his game changing abilities, blazing speed, help on S/T, and he did it as the #1 wide out. Maclin was the #2 all season. Either way, you can play with the stats all you want, if you watched the games you saw the specialness in Jackson more so than Maclin in his rookie year. That doesnt mean Maclin can’t be as good or better, but rookie season a lone — Jackson.

Maybe, but even if you don’t play with the stats at all (if don’t throw out the Giants, Saints, and Panthers games, in which Maclin saw extremely limited action), Maclin’s per game numbers are still slightly better…

Jackson – 3.82 catches, 58.9 yards, 0.16 TD
Maclin – 3.88 catches, 56.75 yards, 0.31 TD

It’s really hard to tell your brain to separate what Jackson did this year, and only try to remember his rookie season. Actually, it’s almost impossible. Jackson was great, no doubt, but he wasn’t even close to what he was this year, when he was hands down the best player on the team.

Personally, I voted for Jackson, but at the very least, there’s a legitimate debate here.

Main point for me, maclin could get lost in our slew of weapons.

jackson

jackson was playing with less around him. that fact alone i would give it to jackson. just the same i think maclin can be a better pure wr then jackson, but jackson is a game changer. they’re a great compliment to each other.

also the reason we praised Jackson SO much

and received Maclin quietly…Jackson was the best 1st year receiver in we’ve had in 5 years (Since TO), Maclin was the best 1st year receiver we had since Jackson, the year before

well obviously...

that’s also why we expected so much out of maclin before he even signed his contract…so it was kind of hard for us to be shocked by his production. it was more like “yah, we knew he was gonna do good”…
it was said many a time by other fans in the preseason, jackson spoiled us, we could be disapointed by maclin if he needs time to develop. gladly he didnt.

i think next year they’re gonna be a very dynamic duo. it should be a great offensive year no matter who’s throwing them the ball, outside of vick.

also, i sort of hope that westbrook isnt brought back, it’s really hard to say, but i think the offense, especially mccoy, worked better together while he was out. it was too much for the coaches to handle tryin to get the three headed monster production. i wish nothing but the best for him and i do hope things work out.

yeah

McCoy really benefited from being the starter. Every time Westbrook was probable or played, McCoy didn’t seem as confident, and didn’t run as well.

Like you, I’m fine if Westy goes, HOWEVER, I’ll be PISSED if they don’t resign Weaver

thats the sentiment of our entire fan base….i highly doubt they’ll let weaver go…..
although, he pulls that bullshit of jawing w/ the defense and fking up a drive again, get rid of em…

Jackson by a nose

Jackson did more with fewer offensive weapons around him to distract opposing defenses, even though he had a few more games to increase his total numbers.

What a great feeling to know they’re both very young and only starting their NFL careers. The are a bright spot on a team that didn’t have many in 2009. Just their stat lines from the final game of the season say good receivers:
Jackson, 6 catches for 92 yards and 1 TD vs. Arizona.
Maclin, 7 for 146 and 1 TD vs. Dallas.

Jackson had that infamous almost theoretical touchdown that he threw away on the 1 yard line as a rookie too.

by andyreidswaistline on Feb 10, 2010 11:04 AM EST reply actions

Jason Avant came on stronger too this season. As much as I love what Maclin brought to the table this year (big plays, speed, sticky hands, sideline catches), Jackson had the better rookie season. Maclin seems like a humble guy too that hopefully meshes well with Jackson for years to come.

by andyreidswaistline on Feb 10, 2010 11:07 AM EST up reply actions

Jackson.

Maclin is better at slants and curl routes hence his good catch rate per game but Desean has been a “game changer” due to his big play ability since his rookie year. One of my predictions on Joe D’s thread was…

Jeremy Maclin will have more catches than Desean Jackson.
but Desean will still be the better WR due to his big plays.

by Route36 on Feb 10, 2010 11:36 AM EST reply actions

That surprised me

Because it wasn’t supposed to be a strength of Maclin’s coming out of college and what something that was stressed at Mizzou that much.

by MG77 on Feb 10, 2010 11:40 AM EST up reply actions

Jackson was better

because he was a #1 and without the same amount of weapons around him.

Maclin was fantastic, but he also was single covered by the #2 CB all season where Jackson was getting attention and double coverage after teams realized how effective he was.

by Smallbugger on Feb 10, 2010 11:36 AM EST reply actions

Jackson/Maclin

Are they the best WR 1/2 combo the Eagles have had since Barnett/Williams back in the late 80s? Eagles have had some strong seasons by WRs since then but it is hard to recall a season where they had 2 legit quality starting WRs.

by MG77 on Feb 10, 2010 11:39 AM EST reply actions

I actually think Maclin might end up being better in the long run

But in my opinion Jackson’s rookie season was better because of the fact that, like you said, he had a lot less help.

by Q27 on Feb 10, 2010 12:55 PM EST reply actions

I agree on long term...

Maclin’s ability to rely on other skills beyond blazing speed (not that he lacks speed) means he’s probably a bit safer long term.

But Jackson is the one I sit-up a bit more and get excited every time he touches the ball

by Smallbugger on Feb 10, 2010 2:31 PM EST up reply actions

at least jackson has never had the alligator arms (or eyes) issue like maclin did against the cowboys. desean has a confidence and swagger that is very common with many great receivers. i think maclin lacks the toughness needed in this league. that scares me a bit.

by awd777 on Feb 10, 2010 2:51 PM EST up reply actions

Kind of unfair to label him as “lacking toughness” based on one play that occurred at the end of a blowout.

by JimmyK on Feb 10, 2010 3:04 PM EST up reply actions

Maclin, hands down

Maclins ability to go up for the catch exceeds past jacksons
Maclin is a more complete WR, from blocking down field to never taking a play off
I have never seen Jackson throw a good block, but I have seen him take plays off.

Its not a tough decision at all.

Maclin

might be a better pure receiver…but I really think Jackson is the more explosive of the two.

I’m curious to see how Maclin comes out next year, and if he shows the ability to take over a game like Jackson who hits from ANYWHERE on the field from multiple positions

"EFF YOU, WE'RE WINNING ANYWAY!!!!!!" (Bye, Dawk)

by jalarsen1 on Feb 10, 2010 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

Jackson, just being explosive, will not last nearly as long in this league as Maclin being just a receiver.

Maclin will have a better and longer career than Jackson in the NFL.

by worldphuckinchamps on Feb 15, 2010 6:17 PM EST up reply actions

It's tough to say

but I think Maclin might have a higher ceiling. Jackson is no doubt a special player. A very dangerous weapon. But Maclin seems to me to be a better all-around WR. He can do it all…. go deep, work intermediate routes, go up and fight for a jump ball, and take a bubble screen or quick out 75 yards to the house.

Everybody questioned the Maclin selection last April because he was supposedly a “mirror image” of Jackson, but after one season he appears to be a good complement to Jackson.

These two are very exciting players and seeing that picture of both of them above makes me feel like a little gitty school girl (no homo).

Bottom line: both had great rookie seasons and it’s exciting to think about how much better they could potentially be in their 2nd/3rd seasons (typically breakout seasons for WRs).

Ok you got a point and your thinking outside the box so why dont you think about this?

Desean did what he did without there being another viable threat out there, who did he have opposite of him? Reggie brown, KC, Avant, Baskett? Hardly anyone (except for a healthy KC) who scares anybody.. Point being Djax was the main priority for the D as a reciever.

Maclin however benefitted from a Celek breakout year, Desean Breakout year, and having Avant and to a small extent weaver there.. Meaning he had alot more pressure on him his Rookie year that Desean did during 2008.

am i reading that right…you’re sayin maclin had more pressure on him because he had more talent around him??….im utterly confused by your logic. how does having more weapons to focus on then just maclin put him under more pressure to perform? he wasn’t a go to guy this year…and was a second option if he was open, desean shouldered the the main load. i would even say he was a third option a lot, celek being the second read. if anything there was nothing keeping his numbers from being good since defenses focused on celek and desean first.

no, Im saying Djax's year is better due to the fact he didnt have anyone to help him on the opposite side...

and Im saying Maclin had it a bit easier because he had Djax opposite of him.. Athough late in the season Maclin was playing like a Pro-Bowl WR.

Maclin....

Did almost as much with more balls going to more options. When Jackson was a rookie it was basically just him with a little bit of Westbrook and now and then Celek. THis past year with Maclin as a rookie, he had balls going to Jackson, a much better Celek, better Avant as well. So with less balls going his way Maclin still did a hell of a job I think and better then Jackson. Jackson’s rookie year McNabb didn’t have the options he did this past year. I like what Maclin gave us in his first season and I think he has a bright career.

Now in saying all of that, I can’t help but get excited to think about the next 5 – 8 years. With the young talent, Maclin, Jackson, Celek, Avant, McCoy and even Weaver….we could be very potent for years to come!! Of course their is always the money and health issues that seem to always come up!

Tale of two seasons

Jackson had a much better first half of the season and Maclin had a much better second half. I am going to call out two plays as reasons I give Maclin a very slight edge. Jackson’s end zone drops that cost us the Redskins game. Maclin’s catch that won us the Broncos game. That was clutch for a 21 year old rookie playing on an injured foot.

Don't Matter

It don’t even matter to me who had the best rookie season all that matters to me is that we have two nice receivers for the future. I personally think that Maclin is gonna be more clutch before it is all over with. As a receiver that is. I just can’t wait for this year where I think they will both have 1000 yard years
