Why does Manning not get bashed as bad

Isn't it funny how him and his brother make the same face after a horrible loss

Star-divide

As I'm sure you all know Donovan McNabb has been much maligned for not winning the big game and in all fairness he has not. Now enter Peyton Manning who by some accounts is the greatest QB of all times if not he is at least in the discussion and he has won a super bowl, but lets forget the ring on his finger and look at this more deeply.

Here are both their stat lines from the super bowls they have played in

comp att pct yrds TD Int

McNabb(on game):  30 51 58.8 357 3 3

Manning(2 games): 56 83 67.4 580 2 2

Manning per game 28 42 67.4 290 1 1

I think most would agree that McNabb's SB numbers for that one game are probably one of his greatest statistical games of his career, save the interceptions, but when you look at Manning's numbers they are honestly well below what we expect to see from him seeing as how his regular season numbers average 300 yards, 2.2 TD, and 1 INT per game.(I divided his season stats by 15 because he played 14 whole games then parts of the last 2 so about 15 games). So what I want to know is why does McNabb get beef for not winningin big spots when he plays about as good as we think he is, not accurate, over/under throws, and not many 4th quarter comebacks, and Manning not get ripped when he plays by his standards way way sub par, not to mention their playoff records, McNabb(9-7) in seven appearances, Manning(9-9) in ten appearances. Its is really interesting to notice that Manning has more playoff appearances that playoff wins.

DISCLAIMER!

I am not saying that Donovan McNabb is better than Peyton Manning, trust me in my opinion its not even close. I just wanted to get some interesting discussion on the topic of clutchness when most people say that a ring makes you clutch and then you look at the rest of Manning's numbers and it just doesn't add up. Sooooooo discuss.

Manning doesnt miss nearly as many throws that he should make, compared to McNabb.
Half of McNabbs stats are screens, its not his actual doing, its the receivers (Westbrook/McCoy)
Manning has ring.

but clearly

Manning missed on more than a couple throws in order to have lost half of his playoff games. And I don’t think that just because he has one ring in a super bowl where his team rushed for almost 200 yards, not to mention they were playing the lowly Chicago Bears who were offensively inept to say the least and would have scored only ten points if not for Devin Hester’s TD return on the first kick of the game.

come on I want this debate to be more than PEYTON HAS RING!

Let's get it Birds.

Unfortunately...

“Peyton has a ring” is the answer, simple as it may be. Let’s say the 2008 Phillies didn’t win the championship – People in Philly and elsewhere would still be destroying Brad Lidge for giving up 3 runs in the top of the ninth after Pedro Feliz had just tied it up the previous half inning with a dramatic HR.

But when you have earned that ring in previous seasons, a lot is forgiven. Personally, all contributing members of the 2008 Phils have a lifetime pass from me.

by JimmyK on Feb 10, 2010 3:00 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

It's like this

Number 1) No other fan base expects more then a Philly fan base. Therefore, if you are a Colts fan, you might be mad at Manning stats, but since your convictions don’t run as deep as ours do it is forgotten very quickly. If you are a Philadelphia fan, you don’t give a shit what Manning does. His play, unless playing against us, does not affect our team. Why should we get riled up over poor statistics from a rival team. (All teams are our rivals as far as I am concerned)
2) Mannings regular season stats, the fact that he has a ring, and the fact that we all have seen some of the amazing things he does, not to mention he does them on a more consistent basis gives Manning a pass with the mainstream media. It also helps that since he is the best QB playing right now, his fan base does not call for his head after a loss because who else is there? Since we as Eagles fans, know that there are better QB’s doing well, and the fact that although McNabb has made some amazing plays he has made some very boneheaded ones and he doesn’t bring the amazing on a consistent basis, plus we as the fans call for his head, that fuels main stream media to bash him harder.
3) Because the Colts organization is in Indianapolis while the Eagles are in Philadelphia. Think about that for a second.
I am sure there are many other reasons, but I think these three really break the basis down.

Manning is a choke artist...

…pure and simple. Unless, of course, you foolishly believe that there are other factors that go into winning and losing games than the play of a quarterback. But that’s just ridiculous “liberal” populism! Of course there can’t be other factors in winning and losing games. It’s not like there’s 21 other people on the offense and defense who are capable of things like a) missing tackles b) blowing coverage c) shitty blocking d) dropping passes e) fumbling footballs, etc. It’s all on the QB. Not only should Peyton and Donovan be banned from the NFL, they should be hanged, drawn and quartered.

...But if he pulls the rug on his quarterback, Reid must do it knowing that he let McNabb down more than McNabb ever let him down.

This is easy

Manning’s stat lines say all that needs to be said really. He just outperforms McNabb and every other QB in the game. It’s hard to bash anyone for that. OK, some talk show types tried this past week to invent a new “Manning is a choke artist” movement, but the guy already has a ring. Game over.

I think "he has a ring" is the answer.

Think back to pre-2007. A lot of people thought Manning had all the skill, but none of the grit needed to win a big game. Yea he had gaudy numbers, but when it counted, he came up small. You point out that the numbers actually back that up. But he won the Super Bowl and took a step toward all those gaudy statistics meaning something more. I actually agree with what you are saying in principle. McNabb performed about how we expect him to perform, but in the end, the Eagles lost the game, so his legacy is tainted (for now). Manning underperformed as he always does in the playoffs, but the Colts won the game, so his legacy was cemented. Had he won again, GOAT would be thrown around. Now, his flaws have resurfaced just slightly, so the GOAT talk has died out. But the glow of that first ring still keeps him looking good. If McNabb wins a Super Bowl he will be thrown into HOF talk and if that SB is with the Eagles he will be considered the greatest QB in Eagles history and among the greatest players in Eagles history. The good numbers will look better and the bad numbers will sort of go away. Just like with Manning.

i dont know bout you...

but all ive been reading the past couple days is bashing of peyton…

1. an article about him not shaking hands at the end of the superbowl.

2. comparing big bens ability to win the big game being better then peytons.

"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

by greenbean#twoOH on Feb 10, 2010 10:17 AM EST reply actions

He has a ring is the answer

If Mcnabb won it last year or the year before that, or even next year, everything will be forgotten. Just like a lot of people would trade all of our last few winning seasons for a superbowl even if it meant we go 4-12 the next 2 seasons.

by Team Serbia on Feb 10, 2010 12:01 PM EST reply actions

Ok well how about this question

More people in Philadelphia watched the super bowl than in Indianapolis and when the team got back from the bowl only 11 people greeted them off the plane.

Does it piss you off that this un-loyal, non=passionate fan base has a team this good?

Actually I dont think the first pick was his fault...

there offense is based on timing and Reggie Wayne just gave up on his route, Manning threw it where he should’ve been and porter just pulled an asante… Worst case its a more challanging pick if Wayne does what he’s payed to to, best case Porter does the bad-asante and wiff’s causing a TD for wayne.

watched that route all week on film…and were waiting for it….porter was in the right place at the right time cause of the preparation and film watching they did. that was no accident or lack of effort by wayne.

just have to say that first off….it’s in slow motion. porter’s already there, and wayne seems to have a studder step “oh shit” moment…but it was no fault to anyone. the saints knew it was coming and there was no hope.

also Reggie Wayne was dealing with a knee problem

so he might not have run the route exactly the same as usual. But ass you hear just from listening to the clip its one of the Colts favorite plays so they obviously say this on film and exploited it. I agree with Green Bean.

KICK ASS every day!!!

by squidlo97 on Feb 12, 2010 12:56 PM EST up reply actions

Three Things

1.) He won a Super Bowl, even if it was mostly due to the ineptness of Rex Grossman. If McNabb had won even one Super Bowl for Philadelphia, we’d cut him ALOT more slack when he does stupid stuff and chokes away games. Instead, we’re continually reminded by fans of opposing teams the the Eagles, despite solid play from McNabb over the years, have still not won a Super Bowl. And we begin to question if part of the reason for this is, in fact, McNabb.

2.) He is damn near flawless during the regular season. As in, 65%+ completion, 30+ TD flawless. McNabb has stretches of play throughout the regular season that evoke the worst of his big-game choking, so it reminds us even more of why we hate him. You don’t see the flashes of choker Manning until the really big games in the playoffs, for the most part.

3.) Manning adopts a workman-like attitude when it comes to the game. He plays football like it truly is his job; he busts his ass preparing for the game. And when he’s on the field, he’s all business. No stupid clowning, no smiling and clapping when he makes a mistake, and no fraternizing with opposing players during a loss. He at least gives us the impression that he cares about the game, and that he takes the game very seriously, and that he truly WANTS to win. We never see any of this from McNabb. The impression we get from McNabb is that he’s a great athlete that could be playing any number of sports and happens to be a football player and is mostly here to pick up his paycheck, win or lose. And Philly fans HATE that kind of player.

by MyronBales on Feb 10, 2010 10:20 PM EST reply actions

near flawless

you mean when he’s not throwing 4 picks against san diego…..peyton manning has HUGE flaws that no one ever focuses is on. Is he a top 4 qb of all time sure, but he is NO WHERE near flawless….

yah

i commented at the bottom…to call manning flawless is ridiculous…you’re buying into him as the media darling if you don’t think he has flaws.

Does McNabb have flaws? Yeah

Does McNabb come to mostly pick up his paycheck, win or lose? That is a retarded statement and you’re not a true Eagles fan if that’s what you think. The guy obviously wants to win. Stupid comment

Umm...

Spend some time watching Peyton Manning. He may go down as the greatest QB in the HISTORY of the NFL. His team would be shit without him…I think hes earned some slack. On the other hand Mcnabb has played like garbage in clutch situations too many times to count. He gets hammered because he deserves it. Yes hes made spectacular plays but really who cares if it isnt when it counts. Donovan Mcnabb is to Peyton manning is what Vince Carter is to Michael Jordan….not even in the same league.

by Gdog2009 on Feb 11, 2010 10:37 AM EST reply actions

i dont think

you’ll find anyone who will deny he’s one of the best to ever play the game. I think it’s more about the special treatment he receives, ala brady getting a call by just pointing at the refs. no one dares talk bout the manning in a negative light. no one deserves that much slack, this is only a game. to not admit the man has flaws, is to admit he’s inhuman, and peyton is by far from inhuman.

"Eagles fans are a passionate group who love their team," said McNabb, "if not the actual players. It's not like winning a Super Bowl before the first month of the season is the hardest thing they've ever asked of me. That'd be all those times they asked me to go kill myself."

by greenbean#twoOH on Feb 11, 2010 10:41 AM EST up reply actions

...

the reason peyton gets cut more slack than other QBs is simply because he works his @$$ off to get better. everyone knows that during this offseason peyton is gonna work even harder because he knows he made the mistakes that cost the colts the game. peyton is always trying to make himself better, where as most players are content to keep the same level of play

by flyersfangiroux on Feb 12, 2010 12:35 PM EST reply actions

yeah but...

While Peyton is studying defensive snapshots on the sideline after a mistake or a 3 and out our QB is smiling and laughing and having a good time…or just sulking and looking like the game is over in the first quarter(see either Dallas game). Doesnt that count for anything ? I think its safe to say that when it comes to moonwalking, playing air guitar as well as smiling—-Mcnabb owns Manning in every way.
