Eagles Release Derrick Burgess, Sign DE Bobby McCray

The Eagles made another roster move today releasing Derrick Burgess, who they only signed two weeks ago, and brought in former Jaguar and Saint Bobby McCray.

This is from the Eagles press release.

A seven-year veteran, McCray (6-6, 260) was originally a seventh-round draft choice of Jacksonville in 2004. He spent four seasons with the Jaguars (2004-07) and two with the New Orleans Saints (2008-09), and has compiled 29.5 career sacks in 93 games (37 starts). His best season came in 2006 when he led the Jaguars with a career-high 10 sacks. He also led the Saints with six in 2008.

Now i feel much better about the pass rush.

According to the Saints SBN site, he was a “stat chaser” that often breaks containment and doesn’t play within the system. Hence, why he stopped getting playing time and eventually let go. Just another fastball for passing downs who Mcdermott won’t know how to utilize. I just can’t understand how Babin and Clemons went on to have monster seasons for their next teams. Ridiculous.

babin

was used more this year…..here he was just another cog in that rotational system which imho is too detailed. so he would see very few snaps

by Easedel on Dec 30, 2010 1:22 PM EST up reply actions

That’s the thing. The Titans realized he was NOT just a rotational player and the Eagles didn’t. Babin is in the top three in sacks, QB hits, and tackles for loss!

by Route36 on Dec 30, 2010 1:43 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

To be fair, three other teams made that mistake as well.

Who was supposed to know he would finally put it together at 30?

At least 2 of those 3 other teams tried to use him out of position at 3-4 OLB

The Eagles have way too many “specialists” or rotational guys. Just play 5-6 guys total on the D line. Stop trying to out think the other guys and just out play the guys. The Giants have no problem with this. Route36 is right.

Quite hating on McDermott

The Titans are very good at getting the most out of Dlinemen. Look at Kearse, Vanden Bosch, Haynesworth…

by philiafan14364 on Dec 30, 2010 3:29 PM EST up reply actions

Chris Clemons in Oakland before coming to Philly: 8 sacks.

In Philly: 7 sacks in 2 years

This year: 10.5 sacks so far in Seattle.

It’s not just Mcdermott. It’s also on the D-line coach.

by Route36 on Dec 30, 2010 4:09 PM EST up reply actions

Thats part of it but allowing players to play more often would help also, they bring these guys in and don’t give them enough playing time. Look at Jerome Harrison this year he’s only getting 1 or 2 touches a game he should be getting closer to 10 he has good speed and can catch and he proved with Cleveland he can also handle a full game of carries.

by ryanitus on Dec 30, 2010 6:33 PM EST up reply actions

It’s different with Harrison since McCoy himself doesn’t get enough carries in Andy/Marty’s offense. The LDE position has been up for grabs and all Mcdermott has done is keep revolving players at that position. He should’ve given 2-3 guys a couple games to play as a full timer and then pick the best one. Instead, he kept rotating players during games and there was no consistency or rhythm. Very poor job on his part.

by Route36 on Dec 30, 2010 7:57 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Babin and Clemons both are talented but they are playing 3 of 4 snaps with their new teams compared to what they were getting in philadelphia.

by ryanitus on Dec 30, 2010 6:31 PM EST up reply actions

I think that we need a new D-line coach. It always seems like people we bring in under perform, besides Cole. Babin and Clemons are prime examples of that.

Rory Segrest.

I’d be down to replace him, he’s failed for 2 years now.

That explains a lot.

Promoting him made our STs and DL worse. Typical.

by DLawrence55 on Dec 30, 2010 4:58 PM EST up reply actions

Actually

I think McCray will be good. Against athletic quarterbacks, Juqua Parker sucks at breaking down and getting a sack, prime example is Webb on tues. He (Juqua) should have had 3-4 sacks. And although no quarterbacks on any of the playoff teams are that athletic Jay Culter, Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees are elusive in the pocket and will scramble for the first.

Eff age, were winning now!

parker is pretty garbage to be a starter. he had 3 or four free shots on webb and missed ALL of them.

He was straight up embarrassed on national TV.

But he does great during the first 3 weeks every year, which means he’s finally figured it out and is ready to be a starter!

When was the last time you saw a DE bring down a WR in the open field? Vick was making Jarred Allen look just as silly most of the night, does that mean Allen sucks?

Im not saying Parkers great, but lets not get carried away because of one game.

You're right, it was just one game.

Juqua’s played good and has made big plays for the Eagles this season. I just think when Graham went down to injury it kind of screwed up the rotation and how Parker was being used earlier in the year. He did get embarrassed though on Tuesday, but Vick does that to all pro’s pretty frequently, but, Joe Webb is no Mike Vick, or is he?

As Collinsworth stated during the game, Webb and Vick had the same 40 times coming out of college. Webb was also drafted to be a WR, so he can definatley have similar shitfiness as Vick.

Good point

But after one or two of those plays I would think that he would take steps to keep Webb contained. I’m not pissed that he did not get the tackle, it’s allowing Webb to break containment and get outside that bothers me.

Go Eagles!

So Burgess must really suck?

Why do they sign a guy like him and cut him 2 weeks later, AFTER we lose another DE?

Probably not in the shape they need him to be in.
