This is a chart of the teams who made the Super Bowl based on their seeding since 1990. In parenthesis is the percentage of teams who make it. As you can see, getting the bye is extremely important to making it to the big game- even more so in the NFC, where 89% make it. In the AFC 68% of the bye teams make it. Even if there are upsets (usually a two losing) the other seed with a bye almost always wins. Combined 1 and 2 seeds make the Super Bowl 79% of the time.
