LeSean McCoy: Underrated
When you play on an offense that has flashy playmakers like DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin and the NFL’s biggest story Michael Vick it’s easy to be overlooked. Toss in LeSean McCoy’s unassuming attitude and it’s so easy for opposing fans to forget about him. However, the one guy you probably shouldn’t ignore is LeSean McCoy.
LeSean McCoy is so good that Merrill Hodge, football analyst of ESPN says that LeSean McCoy in his second year is a more developed between the tackle runner than Brian Westbrook was in his seventh or eight year. High praise when you’re starting to be considered better than the best Eagles runner in the modern era.
Perry Fewell on LeSean McCoy: http://buzztap.com/-8qAX1C
"In my opinion, he is the guy," Fewell said. "The receivers, they get all the accolades, but if you look at the games and who damages you in the fourth quarter, against us it was McCoy, against Dallas it was McCoy. He’s the guy who inflicts the pain on you and the other guys get the glory, so he’s a tough cat to handle now.
"First and second down he’s getting that run, be it run or be it screens or what have you, but he’s just pounding away at you and then in the fourth quarter he gets stronger. He’s got a great will on him and he fights and he busts runs against you and he’s a very tough man to cover with 60 minutes of football."

As you can see LeSean McCoy is having himself one heck of a season with 1510 all purpose yards. That means he is averaging over 116 yards a game and he has scored 9 total touchdowns. Just for comparison’s sake lets compare this to some other running backs’ seasons from the past.
LeSean McCoy is on pace to have a stat line that looks like this:
227 carries, 1,196 yards, 8 touchdowns, 86 catches, 662 yards receiving, 2 receiving touchdowns, 50 first down runs and 37 first down catches.
2009: Ray Rice
-2041 all purpose yards, 5.3 yards per carry, 8 touchdowns, 82 total first downs, 9.7 YAC Avg., 756 YAC
2007: Brian Westbrook
-2,104 yards, 4.8 yards per carry, 12 touchdowns, 104 first downs, 9 YAC avg, 810 YAC
2006: Steven Jackson
2334 yards, 4.4 yards per carry, 16 TD, 105 first downs, 8.8 YAC avg, 792 YAC
1998: Marshall Faulk
2287 yards, 4.1 yards per carry, 10 touchdowns, 106 total first downs, 9.4 YAC avg, 808 YAC
Now why would I compare LeSean McCoy to them? Well first of all, they’re all great dual threat guys just like LeSean McCoy is. And yes, I realize that more than 100 yards short of the next closest all purpose yardage guy. But here is what I’m getting at, look at the amount of touches and yards per touch for these guys.
LeSean McCoy:
5.9 yards a touch, 3.5% of touches go for TDs and 28% of his touches go for first downs
2009 Ray Rice:
6.1 yards a touch, 2.4% of touches went for TDs and 25% of his touches went for first downs
2007 Brian Westbrook:
5.7 yards per touch, 3.5% of touches went for TDs and 28% of his touches went for first downs
2006 Steven Jackson:
5.3 yards per touch, 3.6% of touches went for TDs and 24% of his touches went for first downs
1998 Marshall Faulk:
5.5 yards per touch, 2.4% of touches went for TDs and 25% of his touches went for first downs
As you can see, statistically, LeSean McCoy per touch is producing just as well as some of the best all purpose yardage players in recent memory. I won’t bother comparing LeSean McCoy to 2001 Marshall Faulk, 2003 Priest Holmes, 2006 LaDanian Tomlinson and 2009 Chris Johnson because obviously those are some of the greatest runningback performances in history and LeSean McCoy isn’t that good, yet (he is only 22).
Statistically, LeSean McCoy is one of the best running backs in the NFL. He is producing with some of the best running backs in the NFL despite the fact that he is receiving fewer touches than everyone else in the top 15 in rushing yards.
On this play he doesn’t really have to do much because of fantastic blocking but that’s something that LeSean McCoy is great at. If you give LeSean a sliver of daylight he can potentially take it to the house. LeSean McCoy obviously didn’t have to use much of his vision on this play but there are plenty of examples this year where LeSean McCoy will choose a different hole than designed and/or use his great sense of cut back lanes. And once LeSean gets into the open field, you’re in trouble, did you see him just freeze those Cowboys defenders?
This is a perfect example of LeSean McCoy’s cutback ability. The Giants played that run well, the intended hole was clogged but LeSean McCoy’s vision allows him to see that cutback lane. Once he gets into the open field he uses his elusiveness to escape the tackle by the safety. Like I said earlier, LeSean McCoy is deadly in the open field, I don’t think there are many guys who can match his skills in the open field in the NFL, I can only think of two off the top of my head, Jamaal Charles and Chris Johnson.
LeSean McCoy is just a perfect fit for this offense. He is deadly in space and this offense gives him space. Jeremy Maclin and DeSean Jackson can clear out space underneath for LeSean to work with. The Eagles vaunted passing game keeps teams from stacking the box. Michael Vick forces teams to maintain their gaps and line up a bit wider all of which give LeSean more space to work with.
Is there a flaw in LeSean’s game? Sure there are little dings and dents but is there a big gaffe? I can’t think of one. He still isn’t a powerful guy, he won’t bowl over you but you need to wrap up because he has shown he can get yards after contact. Is he a grade A pass blocker? Not really but he is a solid B at this point and he is still getting better.
If the Eagles are going to make a championship run, LeSean McCoy is going to be key and I think he is up for it. He is one of the most effective and efficient runners in the NFL this year.
So, in conclusion I’ll leave you with a question and a fact.
Question: Do you guys think that LeSean McCoy is as good as Brian Westbrook was?
Fact: LeSean McCoy has 5 runs of 40 yards or longer, most in the NFL.
And did I mention LeSean McCoy is only 22? The future is bright.

Great Post
REC!
Question: Where did you get such good quality video for your youtube vids (if you made those vids yourself)?
Eff age, were winning now!
Nice post, but I wouldn’t say McCoy es underrated, The media is pretty big on him and even opposing fans know what a threat he is. That aside, I wasn’t too high on Lesean last year and I’m really excited on the progress and ability he’s shown, but the thing that impresses me most is his age, really the whole teams’ age, as Big Red would say, it’s a beautiful thing.
I’m extremely happy about this teams’ not only potential but actual production.
And to think this is a rebuilding year. Again, it’s a beautiful thing.
Just to complement, I don’t think he is underrated, only thing is he gets lost in the shuffle, when you have two of the best young WR’s in the game, and the most electrifying and exciting QB since Michael Vick (yes that was on purpose), and your scheme is a pass first one, there is no way you get the amount of attention you should
Yeah the media is big on him this week because of his game against the Cowboys but in terms of fans I think opposing fans forget about McCoy because Vick, Jackson and Maclin are so explosive. In general I think opposing fans fear the passing game more than the running game and I don’t think that should be the case because McCoy is so good.
It's beginning to look a lot like Vickmas!
This
I’m a Giants fan and for all the Vick-hate (I don’t want him seriously injured, as that would be wrong, but optimal for me is him punching a ref, missing the punch, and being ejected), McCoy is the guy I really fear. But I think this post itself point to why he isn’t underrated:
LeSean McCoy is so good that Merrill Hodge, football analyst of ESPN says that LeSean McCoy in his second year is a more developed between the tackle runner than Brian Westbrook was in his seventh or eight year. High praise when you’re starting to be considered better than the best Eagles runner in the modern era.
Maybe he hasn’t reached the big time star status yet, but as the post notes he’s only 22. In my mind it takes a few years before a guy this age is recognized as not being a flash in the pan but something more. There’s a difference to me between being underrated and not having yet proven yourself over the long term.

Experts recognize McCoy, do fans? In my experience with other fans they often times just brush McCoy aside, like he is an afterthought. Just something I noticed, specifically when Bears fans started saying Forte was better or just as good depending on the homer you were talking to.

He's awesome.
To remember that he’s the youngest player on the entire team (yup, look it up) is just great.
He’s going to be one of the most complete backs in the NFL by next season.
Ladies and Gentlemen, as trained by Brian Westbrook, I give you… Brian Westbrook 2.0. LeSean McCoy, Piit Panthers.
Long may he reign.

One thing I noticed...
Receiving Yards
538 (1st among RBs)
Yards after the catch
696 (1st in the NFL)
I don’t know if that’s a mis-type or if Shady really has over 150 yards after the catch from the backfield. I suppose it’s possible. Either way, the fact that he’s 9th in the league in catches is insane. I also really like that you used YPT and TD% — excellent stats for this sort of analysis.

Ok, so I've been thinking this for a while now,
but I think McCoy is the best player we have on offense aside from Vick(which is much closer in my mind than you’d think)…
McCoy is tough, he seems to be able to bust big runs when we’re pretty much putting our hands down in the dirt and saying “we are running this shit to the left side, we dare you to try and stop it”…

Question: Do you guys think that LeSean McCoy is as good as Brian Westbrook was?
Not yet but he is getting there. You guys have to remember, when Westy was here he was the primary focus of opposing defenses and didn’t benefit from offensive players around him like Shady has now.
I think if a young Westy was playing in this offense for 10 years, he would be a hall of famer.
+1
This is very valid, and thats why we cant compare the two. The whole game plan for Defenses was to contain #36 every game. Not #10, not #7, not #18, not #FB and not #25.

Yeah it's because you felt his power.. He could've ended you guys in the first, he thought about it in the 2nd but then the
3rd quarter rolled around and he was like “hey I wanna make a big run..” so he did, then the final 4 minutes he went “I want to go home and sleep, so I’ll drive this ball right up their dicks and call it a day” and so he did that… then went to sleep..
No but really I can totally agree and respect your opinion on McCoy, I’m very glad we got him.

That's a fucking joooookkkkeeeee there buddy...
McCoy is most definitely better than Jacobs who hasn’t really done shit this year.
And he’s still better than Bradshaw..
Bradshaw: 230 carries, 1,116 yards, 4.9 average, long of 48, and 8 TD’s.. then 38 rec, 251 yards and 0 TD’s. He’s also fumbled 6 times, losing 5 of them.
Jacobs: 114 carries, for 693 yards, 6.1 average, long of 73, 8 TD’s.. then 7 rec, for 60 yards, and 0 TD’s.. he’s fumbled 1 time and lost it.
McCoy: 184 carries for 972 yards, 5.3 average, long of 62 and 7 TD’s.. then 70 receptions for 538 yards (long of 40) and 2 TD’s.. He’s fumbled 2 times and lost 1.
So Jacobs has 121 touches for 753 yards and 8 TD’s.
Bradshaw has 268 touches for 1,367 yards and 8 TD’s.
McCoy has 254 touches for 1,510 yards, and 9 TD’s.
McCoy is as good of a runner as Bradshaw (head and shoulders better than Jacobs), but he’s a superior receiver to both of your RB’s and he takes care of the ball MUCH better than both.
Face it, your dynamic fuck buddy duo is nothing compared to McCoy.

Gotta call you on this...And not for "fuck buddy duo" (which would have been a lot funnier as "ambiguously gay duo," but yeah, class and all).
Coughlin has two good backs, and he has a habit of pulling them in blowout games when they’ve hit 100 yards. And he plays both of them, which means that each has less of an opportunity. Oddly, I think your own stats disprove your point. My math is bad, but 2,100 > 1,500 right? And as for receiving, we play different offensive schemes. The Giants scheme almost never looks to RBs as receivers, whereas in the Eagles scheme McCoy is often a receiver of last resort, which makes sense when playing with a more mobile QB. And in a quick offense designed to spread a defense and then use speed to hit 10 or 12 yard gains, this makes sense.
In other words, I find your meatloaf rather shallow and pedantic.

Umm, Better back is McCoy however if you want to talk rushing yards I'd say
we’ve got alot more than you on that one…
McCoy produces more than your backs, therefore McCoy is the better player, and if McCoy is the better player and they both play RB then McCoy must be the better RB.

McCoy is Westbrook
in that Eagles fans pretty much know how valuable he is, and the national media isn’t yet quite aware. Look at the Eagles games, when he has a big game, the Eagles win. He’s in the top 5 or 6 in running according to Football Outsiders advanced metrics, and #2 in receiving.
Since he’s not routinely mentioned as one of the most effective and productive players (not just running backs, but players) in the NFL, he’s pretty much by definition underrated.

As good as Westbrook?
Um no. Westbrook was a bigger threat out of the backfield as a receiver and had better hands. Any garbage pass from McNabb he generally caught. He was also a better blocker.
McCoy has made a huge leap this year though. Improved notably in every facet of the game including as a receiver. Also impressed too because he has played behind an offensive line that simply can’t run the ball to the right or in short-yardage with any kind of effectiveness for almost the entire season. That’s changed a bit with MJG in there but still not exactly easy to run behind this o-line to right.
McCoy has been targeted 75 times, he's caught 70 of them..
I’d say hands are even..
Aside from that I’d agree while Lesean has made some big big strides this year he’s still got a year or two of this type of season to be considered better than Westbrook.

So I play football down here with a large group of friends, whom are infact
Giants fans, all but 4-5 of us, and only 2 are true Eagles fan(one Vick bandwagon bitch).. And when presented with the McCoy or Brandon Jacobs or Bradshaw my closest of the bunch said pretty much McCoy is the superior football player, he’s the superior runner, and that if he were given as many carries as Bradshaw then he’d probably have 1500 rushing yards judging by how we ran right at the Cowboys and they couldnt stop him.. He also said that the reason why they dont get Bradshaw and/or Jacobs involved in the passing game is because they’re largely unproductive in it and that the fact McCoy is so good at it they’d love to have him..
Now that being said he did go on to say that the 1-2 punch works great for them because the Giants HAVE to have it, they cant put 300+ carries on one guy 15 games into the season, and that really the reason the Eagles don’t have to adopt a 1-2 punch at RB is because McCoy doesnt get nearly as many touches as a RB for the Giants does..
Let me know what you think..
Note: Down here in FLA there’s alot of Giants fans, and alot of them are stuck up little pricks, however the fake bandwagon eagles fans are far worse than the worst NYG fan.

Solid Season for Shady
Being a long time Eagles fan, it’s great to see more balance in the Eagle’s offense. If the Birds are going to advance in the playoffs or ever win a Super Bowl, they need a solid running game.
McCoy has shown amazing skills this year. All of it without pro bowl FB Weaver for most of the season and an O Line that started out pretty shaky. Shady can run, catch & BLOCK too. He is the real deal! His challenge is to repeat and build on what he has accomplished this year.
QUESTION – Would Shady be having this kind of season if Kolb were still QB?
I can't wait...
…to unwrap my Shady McCoy jersey on Christmas morning and debut it the next night when the Eagles play the Vikings for a chance to lock up the East (if the Giants don’t lose in the afternoon).
I was going to get a Vick jersey, but I wanted to stray from the status quo, and as this FanPost so accurately proclaims: The future is bright for #25.
