Bears = Overrated?
The sports networks are making such a big deal about the resurgence of Chicago's defense that they're forgetting that they haven't faced anything close to our offense. Some say, "oh, but they beat the Packers and the Giants." Yeah, well, they also lost to the Seahawks and Redskins, and their offense hasn't exactly been lighting up the scoreboard. Some say, "oh, but they're riding high on a three-game winning streak." Big deal. They beat the Bills, the Vikings, and the Dolphins. I for one am not impressed. We're also on a three-game winning streak, and we beat the Colts, the Redskins, and the Giants. Bill Simmons, that namby-pamby zero from ESPN who fancies himself a comedian, believes that we're "overdue" for a meltdown. Sorry, Bill, it's hard to understand you with Tom Brady's crank so far down your throat...
First of all, I find it infuriating that so many are already beginning to jump off the Michael Vick bandwagon after the Giants game. "He didn't have his best game..."; no, but he helped the team come from behind to win, didn't he? As I recall, Donovan, for whom everyone at ESPN is still making excuses, could almost never do that. LeSean McCoy had another terrific game, and the Eagles continued to create turnovers. The experts would have us believe that the Bears' defense has the advantage over Vick. But here's why that whole team is overrated:
JAY CUTLER
He of the double-chin is simply not that good a quarterback. Those that love him tout his strong arm, good footwork, tight mechanics, and impressive size. But let's be honest, none of these qualities are definitive proof that he is a great qb. He's never had a winning season as a college or pro qb...EVER. He's 7-3 now, but his defense is more to thank for that. He exudes arrogance and confidence, yet he continues to make poor reads and forces risky throws (this season, he's thrown 10 interceptions to 12 touchdowns). This is why we'll miss Asante if he sits this one out; he thrives on reading the qb and he can spot a bad read coming a mile down the road. Cutler will definitely breathe a sigh of relief if Samuel is in fact inactive. This season, Cutler's beaten teams that have no defense whatsoever (except for the Packers, but that was a fluke).
MATT FORTE
Forte was once thought to be traveling down the road to individual overratedhood, but he's actually having a decent season (150 carries, 567 yards, 4 TDs). But what they're forgetting is that the Eagles' run defense has come alive in the past few weeks. Donald Brown, Ryan Turain, and Ahmad Bradshaw/Brandon Jacobs couldn't get anything going against them. He has three fumbles acting as a receiver, so when he catches the ball as opposed to receiving a handoff, he's a little more vulnerable (he still has decent receiving numbers, 331 yards with 3 touchdowns and a 10.3-yard average). Perhaps his biggest weakness is his blocking, which the Eagles will need to exploit.
OFFENSIVE LINE
This is probably the Bears' biggest weakness. Their line is currently the worst in the NFL with a whopping 37 sacks allowed thus far, plus 64 QB hits. The Eagles' defense is tied for ninth in the league with 26 sacks, but the mismatch will be exploted more in the category of interceptions; the Eagles are still first in the league, so our d-line has to make short work of their o-line in order to force Cutler to make poor throwing decisions.
THEIR DEFENSE
Yeah, I know, they have Julius Peppers, Brian Urlacher, Lance Briggs, etc. All terrific players, but in order to shut our offense down, they'll need to do more than contain Michael Vick; they'll need to render him completely ineffective, and to do that, they'll need to put him out of the game. A lot of people say the Giants figured out how to do it, keeping him inside the hash marks, something or other. The Giants still couldn't keep him from scoring, though, and they have the top-ranked defense in the league. Their pass defense isn't bad, but they're still allowing a 60.8 completion percentage for the season. They can't afford to give Vick, Jackson, and Maclin that kind of leeway. Their run defense is more worrisome. The question is whether they can handle a tandem of Vick and McCoy (the latter is averaging 5 yards a carry while the Bears post an impressive 3.5 ypc average). Still, 9 rushing touchdowns allowed thus far, which isn't spectacular
WHAT THE BEARS HAVE TO DO TO WIN
Shut Vick down. All the way. The Bears' defense will do everything they can, but they'll also need their offense to try to keep up with the Eagles'. With Vick under center, the Eagles can score from anywhere on the field at any time, and the Bears are no doubt aware of this. We'll see what they have planned, but until Vick loses a game in which he's played full-time, I have a hard time believing that an opposing defense has figured out a way to keep him in check.

They didn't beat the Giants
their ONLY win against a team with a winning record was against the Packers.
We’ve beaten the Jags, Colts, Giants, and Falcons with winning records.

Also
Bears fans have this delusion that the Giants “shut down” Vick.
Fine…if you think 63% completions for 258 yards, 34 yards rushing with a rushing TD is “shut down”, fantastic. I hope the Bears ‘shut down’ Vick, too.
LOL

I know they don’t count in the stat book, but you have to look at those two TD drops, also. You factor those in, and Vick had a very respectable game against a good D.

By ‘shut down’, I think hope they mean contain. The Giants ‘contained’ Vick, but only to a reasonable extent.

Chicago is a good team, they may surprise us..
However for them to pretend like they’re some great team they must be smoking nuts

chicago is not a good team
they lucked out by having an easy schedual…… they have a super easy division this year minus the packers who i also feel are extremely over rated….. like the post said they have no respectful wins besides the packers which was a huge fluke…… i hate to admit it but i feel the giants defense is pretty damn good and we lucked out that game with all those turnovers ……. if ANYTHING it will be a similar repeat of that last game, the bears offense will turn over the ball an easy 3 times its just up to our offense to not have any missed opertunites and to capitalize off of their mistakes…… and to not get too cocky cuz we did get upset by the bears like 2 years ago and their record and team was alot worse :-/

and I agree with this
I wouldn’t be so emphatic that they’re overrated if their fans took more of this approach.
They talk as if they’re the best team in football, and that we’re just another easy stepping stone on their way to a guaranteed NFC Championship appearance.
If they spoke the truth, I’d be more open to dialogue.
The truth:
-we are the best team they’ve faced this year.
-we are the BY FAR the most potent offense they’ve faced this year.
-we already put up 27 points on a defense better than theirs.
-we’ve proven ourselves against good opponents
The fact is…this is a test case game for them. Nobody knows how good the Bears really are. 5 of their 7 wins have come against teams with losing records, and a 6th win came against a .500 team. Sure, they beat the Packers, but they lost to the Seahawks.
Could they win? Yup. But they really should be going into this as though this is the biggest test they’ve had…not another easy game
"EFF YOU, WE'RE WINNING ANYWAY!!!!!!" (Bye, Dawk)
That's what I'm trying to convey..
and you did a nice job finishing it off for me..
All that’s true however I will talk shit with the best of them but on this one I’m staying out of it for the most part because I see it as a coinflip at this point, that’s how it’s been the past 2-3 weeks really.. and Honestly I enjoy the games more like that.

I'll tell right now
I live out in Chicago, and have no love for the Bears, but everyone I know who is a fan is 1. EXTREMELY thankful for where the Bears are this late in the season, and 2. EXTREMELY realistic about how they got there.
There may well be some loudmouths out there (here), but most of them are perfectly aware of how they got to 7 or 8 wins (whatever they have).
The Bears are almost certainly overrated, but let’s try to avoid hubris here. Karma is a fickle bitch.

don’t worry, Bears fans have done enough to counter our arrogance. They claimed that Philly fans beat a man to death, that Philly fans are the worst in sports, that DeSean isn’t that fast, that Knox and Hester are more explosive than Jackson and Maclin, that Idonije is better than Trent Cole, that Greg Olsen is somehow comparable to Kenny Britt and that the Eagles defense is as good as a pile of poop (or something of that nature, specifics, I don’t remember them). They also said the Eagles are beating up on a weak schedule and that Trent Cole isn’t nearly as good as Julius Peppers. And they guaranteed that Hester takes one to the house.
And that just what I can remember. Bears fans have done more than enough to have karma knocking on their door. Plus they once blinded a Steelers fan for being a Steelers fan. Great fans aren’t they?
What do the bears have!
I’ve watched the bears play. They have no answer for the deep ball. Plus there Oline, """"""" Ear Muffs""""""" sucks ass . To top it all off. There QB is a INT magnet. Im not saying the eagles are going to walk right in there and win the game. But it seems like our biggest strenghs are there weakness.
This game
Sometimes a game is as simple as our “good players” vs. their “good players.” I fear Julius Peppers. And that’s it. Their offense is not that great, and don’t kick it to Hester.
Our good players just have to play like they have been playing. I’d love to see more McCoy, too.
BTW, the Bears’ secondary is just as bad as the Giants.
Don't Sweat the Technique...
Winston Justice
relatively contained Peppers in the first game of the season last year when he was with Carolina.
Justice was not supposed to start that game, that was Shawn’s spot. We were worried to death that Peppers would abuse him! That didn’t happen. Peppers did get a sack and a FF….but that was essentially Winston’s second start of his career in a game that he was supposed to be simply a backup.
I’d say Winston’s gotten better since that day, and Peppers is either the same or declining. His 5 sacks in 10 games aren’t exactly intimidating, though I’m hesitant to take much away from his ability.
And if they line Peppers up on the other side, which they do sometimes (in fact this is one reason Bears fans give as to why Peppers is better than Cole…he’s has the ‘versatility’ to play both sides of the line…I don’t think the know enough to understand that Cole moves to LB sometimes, and also jumps into coverage…but that’s another story), but if they do line Peppers up on Peters, that doesn’t frighten me at all. Peters is elite, despite the weekly false start.
"EFF YOU, WE'RE WINNING ANYWAY!!!!!!" (Bye, Dawk)
peppers will also drop into coverage
this isn’t to say my guy is better than your guy because it isn’t, just that the bears ask peppers to do pretty much everything.

He’s up there, yes, but not leading the league by any means. In fact, he’s behind Stewart Bradley, which perhaps we might interpret to mean that passes defended is not the best measure of coverage skills.
lol @ urlacher in coverage

a win is a win regardless of who it is.
Most Eagles fan were saying this the first 16 weeks of last season. Then the Eagles get annihilated by Dallas in back to back games, 58-14 over the course of two games.
Not saying that Bears will get killed by the Eagles, but that isn’t the greatest thinking approach when coming to wins.
RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.
ummm...4 of 7
Giants, Indy, Jax, Atlanta
you have 1.
All wins are not created equal, and I know you’re worried deep down, because we were in that EXACT position last year. We finished 11-5, but everyone pointed to our schedule. We argued that we could only play the teams on our schedule, but all of our losses came against playoff teams (except Oak), and our wins came at the expense of the weak.
We tried to ignore it, but when it finally came crashing down, none of us were surprised. Deep down we knew it was coming, and you do to.
"EFF YOU, WE'RE WINNING ANYWAY!!!!!!" (Bye, Dawk)
Looking at the rankings listed in our survey of power polls, the Bears were ranked 12, 9, 11, 12, 9, and 11.
Are we really going to argue that ~11th is way too high for a 7-3 team, that they should be in the bottom half of the league? If that’s your point of view, please list the teams you’d put ahead of them; I think you’ll find that somewhere around Jacksonville and Washington and Seattle you run out of teams with worse records that you think are better than the Bears.
lol you guys are funny
Lol who overrates the Bears?
No one does. Everyone calls them a fluke outside of the fanbase, and after the 3-0 start most of us stopped caring because the “experts” picked this team to win a max of 6 games if that.
Many of you think the Bears fans think our team is unstoppable we know were the weakness’s are but we also know where the strength is at.
Mike Vick has problems with Lovie Smiths defense. Yes i know that was in the ATL blah blah but he has tomorrow to prove me wrong.
None of you have mentioned two BIG people who can swing this game for the Bears.
Devin Hester- is explosive every bit as Jackson (dont throw me Jacksons recieving stats i know them) he only began learning the WR positon a few years ago and can get behind any defense and his hands have gotten better and better.
Will you guys kick to him? Punting the ball away can be just as good for chicago unless your kicker and punter are on the money because trying to kick the ball out of bounds or away from hester can still lead to good field position.
Greg Olsen- You guys have not mentioned his name once. Olsen vs your linebackers is VERY favorable for the Bears. Bradley, Foiku will get smoked but i think Sims can run with him but not cover him. I really think this game will be his best of the year with the potential match ups. To take him out Green bay put their best defender (charles woodson) on him for most of the game. Without samuel i really want to see what you all do. Mike Martz must try and get him the ball when he is involved he do well and when he scores we are 14-3. He opens up running lanes and space for Knox and hester.
I dont think this game will be a blowout for either side barring a catastrophic injury (ex. Vick or Cutler). This will be a close matchup and I am one of the people who said Vick was killing teams with weak defenses (yes i know the bears schedule was softer than a babys bottom) he has his chance to prove me wrong.
Good game Gents!
May the best team win!
Guns dont kill people. Brian Urlacher kills people.
"Vick was killing teams with weak defenses"
Giants have the #2 pass defense, 192 yards per game. Vick was 24-38-258-0-0 and 11-34-1 rushing.
Colts have the #8 pass defense, 207 yards per game. Vick was 17-29-218-1-0 and 10-74-1 rushing.
Lions have the #18 pass defense, 224 yards per game. Vick was 21-34-284-2-0 and 8-37 rushing.
Packers have the #12 pass defense, 211 yards per game. Vick was 16-24-175-1-0 and 11-103 rushing in just part of a game.
The Bears have the #13 pass defense, 212 yards per game.
From this, I conclude that either a) you don’t think Vick was all that great over those four games where he averaged a 96.7 passer rating and 62 yards rushing, or b) you think defenses from 2-18 are weak and therefore the Bears defense is also weak, or c) you just don’t bother to look stuff up before you spew crap.
And while we're on the topic
Greg Olsen is averaging 32.2 yards per game, good for 23rd in the league.
This puts him 23 yards per game behind Chris Cooley (2-37 and 3-23 in two games against the Eagles).
It puts him 28 yards per game behind Jermichael Finley (4-47 against the Eagles).
It puts him 12 yards per game behind Tony Gonzalez (3-19 against the Eagles).
It puts him 12 yards per game behind Marcedes Lewis (3-15 against the Eagles).
It puts him behind Kevin Boss (2-22 against the Eagles).
In fact, it makes him arguable the worst receiving tight end the Eagles have faced this year. They did get torched by Vernon Davis and Brandon Pettigrew, so I’m not saying it can’t happen. But let’s not act like Olsen’s a superstar or like the Eagles don’t have a chance against receiving tight ends.
See?
I didn’t even have to bother with Devin Hester’s receiving stats. But I hope you realize how stupid it is to compare a guy averaging 28 yards per game to someone who has eight individual receptions longer than that already this year.
Even if we accept your preposterous statement that Hester is as explosive but just hasn’t learned the receiving position yet (after four years at the position?!), unless he suddenly figured it all out during the bye week, it’s safe to assume he still won’t have it figured out tomorrow.
If you just meant as a returner, yes, I’ll agree that Hester is as good a punt returner as Jackson. Is that the best you can do, “we have a punt returner who’s as good as yours”?
Thats fine that you had that time to look up those stats

Not so much 'yapping up [my] beloved eagles'
More just pointing out how inane and idiotic your arguments are.
There are lots of reasons the Bears might win. You just haven’t cited any of them yet.
I’m just surprised that you’d come into our house with that weak sauce. My previous experience with a Chicago SB Nation blog was the Second City Hockey guys, who were quite knowledgeable and interesting. The Bears fans, in contrast, seem to be…well, I’ll just say less informed.
