NFL Power Rankings Week 11: Eagles Breach The Top 5

The Eagles smacked around the Redskins on national TV last night and clearly the power rankers were paying attention. The Eagles moved up in every national poll, but some moreso than others.

Our own SBNation ranks has the Eagles at #5, up 5 spots

FOX still buys the 6-3 Giants and has them up at #4 while the Eagles are down at #9. They also have The Colts, who the Eagles beat and are also 6-2, ahead of the Eagles at #6. Go figure

Philadelphia got its revenge from an earlier loss to Washington in a major way. Michael Vick might have put together one of the best games of all time for a quarterback in that game. We're starting to see why head coach Andy Reid wanted Vick last year.

Conversely, the Sporting News has the Eagles above the Falcons, Giants, & Colts at #6. They also picked a bizarre thing to highlight given what happened last night.

Few teams use a fullback so well, and Owen Schmitt has shined as a blocker in Leonard Weaver's stead.

Sure, Owen Schmitt has done a nice job... but that's who you single out?

[Note by JasonB, 11/16/10 5:50 PM EST ] New ranks

Real Clear Sports, who takes the average ranks of a number of national polls has the Eagles ranked at #6 this week.

Fanhouse has the Eagles all the way up at #2.

Be afraid of Michael Vick. Against the Redskins, Vick threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more -- and that was before halftime. The Eagles set a franchise record for first-quarter and first-half points, and did everything right while trashing division foe Washington Monday night. A date with the Giants next week gives the Eagles a chance to solidify themselves as the class of the NFC East, if not the entire conference.

CBS has the Eagles up three spots to #4 this week.

The way Mike Vick is playing, it's hard to count them out of anything. He's elevated his game in a big way. They play so fast on offense.

It’s utterly ridiculous to have the Giants and/or Colts ahead of Philly.

Certainly not the Colts at least because you have a recent head to head to decide that one.

the eagles beat the colts last week. That would seem to indicate that the eagles are better, right?

fair point

but that still wouldn’t make it “utterly ridiculous” that we are higher, as jimmy dawk suggests.

What makes this is Herremans standing there looking at Haynesworth at his feet, then just calmly looking around like, “Ho hum… I think I’ll go block this guy coming on the backside now…”

I agree. The best part is how shocked Herremans seems at first.

I thought I could see Herremans realize immediately that Albert was done for this play.

Blocking the other dude saved the play.

I can't stop watching it.

It’s just amazing. Herremans just pauses briefly clearly quite confused. I think he might have even thought Haynesworth was hurt based on his actions.

There is no flashier team when they get it going.
I know that’s not why I, or most Eagle fans love about this team, but that is what sells.

While it

is strange to single out Schmitt, he is working out really well I think. I watched a lot of his games at WVU and he was a monster. Lost track of him at Seattle. He isnt Weaver but I think his blocking is proving to be pretty good. Whats his contract like?

I will always be pulling for you #20.

He’s a backup fullback, so I’m guessing he makes more than the maintenance crew but less than the mascot.

by yomjoseki on Nov 16, 2010 3:07 PM EST up reply actions

He has proven to be a more then capable receiver as well.

by captain nodar on Nov 16, 2010 4:15 PM EST up reply actions

I loved Schmitt at WVU, wanted the Eagles to draft him.

My vision is this: he plays for 8 more years and just gets better and better as time goes on. At some point things click and he starts becoming a threat on the circle route that Rathmann excelled at, and manifests that threat in 4-6 winning SB battles.

I realize I may be getting ahead of myself.

I am already pumped for next weeks game, people still think the Giants are better then us and I can’t wait until we smash them so we can shut those fools up.

Also off topic prediction: I think Clay Harbor will be active for the rest of the year. The reason why he wasn’t active since week 1 was because they weren’t pleased with his blocking. I didn’t realize until the highlights that the bomb to DeSean the guy blocking Orakpo was Harbor.

by The Legend on Nov 16, 2010 1:53 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

Absolutely, and that play set the tone for the game.

Just keep it up, Clay.

Honestly, let those teams stay in the spotlight and let they boys keep their heads down and focused. The next three games are all on short rest.

by VaEagle on Nov 16, 2010 2:09 PM EST reply actions

Actually all the games coming up are later games so in a sense they catch a break in that way but I see what you’re saying.

by The Legend on Nov 16, 2010 2:16 PM EST up reply actions

That was funny, but to be fair it’s also fake. Those 2 guys do that same thing in a number of nfl and college football cities.

by BrianS on Nov 16, 2010 3:39 PM EST up reply actions

It did.

I was part of that crowd. But I was leaning towards Vick in recent weeks and last night sealed it. I still think Kolb has the potential to be good and is a starter. But as long as Vick is healthy he shouldn’t be the starter here.

by NOLACuse on Nov 16, 2010 2:46 PM EST up reply actions

Yeh

he’s not starting unless there’s an injury.

But to be accurate, Vick’s performance doesn’t have anything to do with Kolb, who may have what it takes to win.
I’m asking because I haven’t followed this site long enough to know you : what were your expectations for Vick on the Eagles when they first signed him? I was excited as hell, but never thought he could become a fundamentally sound QB. WR? RB?. Gimmick QB? Those were my ideas.
And I also think Kolb could win SBs, but he needs to be protected.

"What a gorgeous dog. What do you feed him?"

by waterfield on Nov 16, 2010 4:41 PM EST up reply actions

The Eagles are playing great football.

I really think you guys have two great QB’s too. Vick is clearly the better one and is an MVP candidate. Vick and Rivers are my mid season picks as of now. Will Kolb’s contract force him to play next season though?

I’d like to say I hate the Eagles, but the Vick story is a tough one not t like. Its not like my team is atop the division w/ your Eagles so its not going to be hard to like his story. Good luck the rest of the way.

34-27 Eagles over the Giants.

7-2. That one I can at least wrap my head around because of the record. But the Eagles beat the Colts TWO WEEKS AGO, and are clearly playing better ball than the Giants. Those are the 2 that make no sense whatsoever.

we just finished a 5 game win streak, and you beat a bad team last night by 31, while we beat a bad team the week before by 34. we have the SAME record jimmy, stop acting like it’s a leap to feel the giants are still a good team.

Gosh

Giants fans are the most insecure fans in the entire nfl aren’t they??!! Always on the defensive. Newsflash, this is an Eagles blog. Our team just had one of the best offensive performances in history and your team got beat by a 1-7 team in your house. If you can’t see where jimmy is coming from, please just leave.

by PhilsForever on Nov 17, 2010 1:20 AM EST up reply actions

i won't leave

i’m loved in these parts…..(crickets)

but i know Jimmy and Jason welcome open banter, specially in threads such as this one. and while jimmy has been fairer to our team than most Eagles fans, it surprises me that he thinks his team is CLEARLY better than us. i understand we are all homers, but even i wouldn’t go that far with my team. i think we are better than you guys, but i think the margin is much closer than jimmy, or most of the people who do those power rankings do.

i understand this is a what have you done for me lately league, and in that world, you guys are king, after what you did in DC. but if you step back and look at the whole picture, you’d see that we have been the hottest team in the league for the past month and a half, and statistically look pretty solid(#1 D in the league). that’s why jimmy dawk, who i totally respect, caught me off guard with that brash declaration.

also, usually jimmy’s good for getting his own back, and he doesn’t seem to be offended by what i said. so who’s the real insecure one here?

Yes, I am a Giants fan. Now that we got that out of the way....

Actually you’re one of the three or four Giants fans who post on here regularly that I’ll read with some interest. With a grain of salt of course, but, you’re generally non combative and at least have reasonable points some of the time. Of course, I wouldn’t call you anything near unbiased. I’ll read FreeBradsaw and G fan in England as well. Tito posts make me wish there was an anti rec button.

by AZ Eagle on Nov 18, 2010 3:06 PM EST up reply actions

Not trying to get anyone’s back. It just seems the last two weeks giants fans have heavily posted on our blog defending their team. This is an Eagles blog. Makes you guys seem insecure with how other fanbases view your team. Why does it matter as long as the team proves it on the field and your fans recognize how good your team can be?

by PhilsForever on Nov 18, 2010 10:32 PM EST up reply actions

i dont understand how we can be behind the falcons. we destroyed them with kolb playing, with vick it would have been even worse

by eaglesinmd on Nov 16, 2010 4:20 PM EST reply actions

Dumb lists are dumb.

I don’t see how fox can have the colts and falcons (and the falcons at #2) above the eagles. the eagles beat the colts last week, and absolutely embarrassed the falcons without vick on the field. That basically goes for all those ‘power rankings’ it seems they are all dismissing head-to-head records amongst the top teams.

by rich p on Nov 16, 2010 4:34 PM EST reply actions

i agree

unless the teams records are far removed from each other(i.e. browns and pats) head to head results are the best way to guess where a team should be compared to the next team. common opponents would be next.

giants

There is no way the giants should be rated over the Eagles, when Philly beat the Colts, and destroyed Washington, and the Giants lost to the lowest rated team in the NFL, the Dallas Cowboys.
