That L doesn't sting like I thought it would

This being what most of us considered a transition season (to rightfully avoid the 'R' word), there was perhaps no game I considered to be more of a must-win than McNabb's first game at The Linc as a visitor. Mostly because of what I anticipated would be the incessant annoyingness of the rest of the nation considering it a one-game referendum on whether or not we should have traded McNabb.

But in the wake of defeat, this one doesn't burn like I thought it would. Six reasons why:

Star-divide

1) So much about that game had to do with the Eagles being abnormally ineffective. The ill-timed penalties, the complete and total lack of an offensive spark beyond LeSean McCoy. There was a lot of subpar all at once. It seemed like the Eagles' annual dogtrash game, so we might as well get it out of our system now so we can do our annual midseason "we're doomed, oh snap we won 6 of our last 7 to finish 11-5 & win the division" act.

2) The clock management, bad O-line and bad special teams are recurring themes, but the other bad things about the game seem fixable. Seems like the Eagles did everything in their power to give that game away, and were still a nearly amazing Avant catch from stealing a W. I didn't feel like we got beat or exposed by the Redskins in a way that would make me think the Eagles wouldn't beat them next time we play. Certainly we have to come up with an answer for when teams drop 8 guys into coverage on 90% of the snaps, but otherwise ...

3) Maybe a small part of me is happy for Donovan and willing to let him have this one as long as we end up on top. Nothing is really settled in Week 4.
4) I feel like we got a little clarity even out of that loss. If there was any doubt, we're now all sure Vick's the spark and the sooner he's back the better. Kolb needs to show us something in more than one of the next few times he gets significant PT or we really start to worry. And no matter if McNabb, Vick or Kolb is the QB, ours is an offense that thrives on big plays. We can't allow teams to completely take DeSean Jackson out of the game. If they want to sink guys into the deep thirds, fine. It's a West Coast offense, we can't put dude in motion and hit him on a slant and let him work?

5) In case anyone forgot or was fooled by the Lions & Jags games, this is still a season where we should expect ups and downs.

6) I think I was dreading this because of the uninformed dredging up the old Philly stereotypes. In the end though, my people represented well, and the Philly haters came off looking stupid. Also, the back-and-forth between Reid and McNabb and Vick and all those guys painted us in a good light. This is a fun organization to root for, even now. The future is still uncertain and the jury out on some of the choices made, but this is not a team that leaves the cupboard bare.

Anybody else feel any of that, or am I about to be bashed for not fully absorbing the pain of this loss?

Good post
Certainly we have to come up with an answer for when teams drop 8 guys into coverage on 90% of the snaps

Hmm… I don’t know…how about RUN THE FRIGGIN BALL ANDY. Jesus Lesean had just 16 carries (and managed a respectable 4 per). Mike Bell is completely useless Eldra Buckley is much better. McCoy should have gotten 25 carries this game (and don’t tell me he’s too small Westbrook once had 33 carries in a game).

Teams will think twice about dropping 8 into coverage when you let them know you can burn them for it by running a guy and guards onto the second level.

Also, Kolb needs to take more shots downfield. Part of me thinks that being benched has shaken his confidence. He is not the kind of guy to check down so much.

Between the Eagles and Michigan, running qbs’ injuries are giving me near-heart attacks.

Also this is not an Eagles defenses. Corey Simon, Darwin Walker, Hugh Douglas, Troy Vincent, Axeman and of course Dawkins…WHERE ARE YOU GUYS?!

we can't run the ball

for a couple reasons actually
1. with kolb in, the de’s are free to pursue the rb coming off the edge. With vick, they have to freeze to account for the option play.
2. O-line gets no push. We have zero bruisers on our o-line. Justice might just be the nicest guy in the world. MJG still too fat to get downfield, blah blah blah. Line has no swagger.
3. Our defense and special teams suck. So we are left trying to play catchup every single game almost-minus the jags game.
4. reid is the coach
5. We are too predictable when running. It is always out of the shotgun.

I dont understand why we never line up in the i formation or trips with split backs and run play action.

I agree on the line

Peters commits penalties, Herremans is a good player, McGlynn is still figuring things out…

I miss the Runyan/Thomas nasty mother f&*^ers. The guys who hate you, your mother, and your dog…oh, and they’re gonna eat you on this play, light your car on fire, and piss on your welcome mat.

We have no one like that on our line. I’ve heard that McGlynn might be that kinda guy, but he’s not comfortable enough yet with what he’s doing. Hopefully he’ll come around.

He's not a pussy

He’s got a lot of responsibility, and is still learning. I hope to God he’s the center for the next 7 years. He’ll gradually assert the fired up, aggressive personality he showed in college and at the combine. He’ll become the leader and tone setter.

What I'm saying

Is if teams are dropping 8 guys into coverage, a simple draw play will burn them. Dispatching a three-man line and getting to the second-level against backpedalling linebackers who will suddenly have to change direction should be easy even for this line. McCoy is talented enough to take care of the rest.

All these losses sting

But I feel ya that it’s not as severe as one might have expected.
Kolb, who I still have faith in, looks like a deer in headlights right now. I mean has Reid played with his technique so much that he won’t attempt any risky pass beyond a hail mary? When we are down like we were dump offs to McCoy and Schmitty just aren’t gonna do it, by the way was this Schmitty’s career game or what? I almost would have rather he forced something into Jackson and try to at least get the ball in his hands for a big play. Another thing was he didn’t look outside mid to deep barely at all. Most of his throws were to the flat or stayed center field.
A couple of drops that were what the fuck moments. Celek, I know he was adjusting but it still hit his hands. Avant, while that would of been a fantastic grab did anybody else cry out that with the fact he didn’t drop a pass last year, this year he already has 2, and one that was mucho critical? It was another hands on the ball, ya gotta bring that in. DeSean had one as well on an out route. I am hoping if Kolb gets more playing time he will settle down and really show us what we seen last year, a confident thrower.
The O line didn’t help any of course. We got Peter’s 2 customary holding penalties. To be fair blocking Orkapo one on one is a tall task (going into last nights game he was the most held defensive player in the league). Everybody else was also mismatched. We’re lucky Haynesworth wasn’t playing like we know he can else it might of really got ugly.
Now the defense was just turrible. I had flashbacks to Deuce McCallister pounding us into submission in the playoffs a few years back. Torain was like a damn jackhammer and Portis looked like he might have a resurgence until he got hurt. We held the passing game in check so that was good to see. Was Heyer getting help all day? Cause Cole was damn near non existant. Maybe that O line is better then originally predicted because until the second half it did not seem like we got any pressure on McNabb. Shore it up guys. Next week is a new game and we are going against a winless 49ers team. Hopefully the Vick situation is clear after today and we can get the proper reps for the proper players and come out firing on a different level.

I kept getting annoyed

when they showed Jackson’s stats. It wasn’t the 1 catch for 6 yards that bothered me…it was the fact that we had only thrown the ball to him three times in three quarters. We have arguably the most electric WR in the game, and we only TRY to get him the ball 5 times in a game!?!?!?! WTF!?!?!?

we cant drop games to bad teams like this. the defense can’t just decide to show up for half he game.

yeah i really hate to whine about officiating

but yesterday was unbelievable. it seemed like EVERY call went against the Eagles.

But there were two HUGE no calls that went against the Eagles. One was on the first punt…like the fifth play of the game when the skins returned it like 60 yards. There was a blatant block in the back that wasn’t called.

Also, late in the fourth quarter when Mcnabb scrambled for that first down, 90 got held badly. There was a reason that entire side of the field was open.

One other thing – I never got to see a replay on the Shady spot that was reviewed before that terrible delay of game penalty. They didnt show it very much in the stadium. Was he actually short or was it just inconclusive?

Rec'd em? Damn near killed em!

he was clearly short of the goal line but there was no way to determine if the spot on the field was incorrect from the angles they showed on tv. reid had every reason to argue about them moving the ball back, it’s just too bad he and kolb weren’t paying attention to the play clock. while reid should have shown better awareness, joe buck and troy aikman (surprise, surprise) both defended the eagles and said that the refs handled the situation very poorly.

I expected Troy Aikman to be really [jerk]-ish because he’s Troy Aikman, but he was really unbiased in the game. The only thing he said that annoyed me at all was when he said “You know who likes this game? The Cowboys!” Which was true, but just bothered me because it’s, you know, the Cowboys.

outplayed Kolb. We would have won if Vick didn’t get injured. In fact, we would have won with any qb who could have hit D-Jax JUST ONCE. Would have changed the complexion of the game completely.

Define n.

Kolb may not have outplayed McNabb, but McNabb certainly didn’t distinguish himself from Kolb either. They both exhibited major flaws.

We would have won with Vick? I see no evidence up to his injury that shows that. We had no points and he had hit Jackson exactly once himself. The Redskins defense in that first half came to fucking play. So perhaps we could of won with Vick in there, or it coulda been the same result. The team sucked it up and they need to do some major work this week to prep for the disappointing but still dangerous niners. If Portis/Torain racked up 165 yards behind their O line, Gore will eat our lunch.

I agree D3

This felt like our annual stinker: The Oakland game from last year, the Cincy tie (and Balt debacle) the year before. I don’t even think I was as pissed about this loss as I was in our loss to the skins where freakin Reggie Brown caught the ball a yard shy of a score. That catch seemed to sum up our offense that whole game.

Kolb played like garbage!!! I keep wanting to give him the benefit of the doubt because the coaches convinced me he was AWESOME. All the John Harbaugh: He used to pick our starting defense apart in the redzone with the 2nd team offense… All the Tom Heckert: I’d give two 1st rounds for him… I believed, but dammit, SHOW ME SOMETHING!!!!!!

VIck is absolutely the spark of our offense, we need him back!

I know it’s only week 4, but I really would have loved to gain a little ground in the division…instead we lose while Skins and Giants win, and the Cowboys rest on their bye and come back only a half game out of it.

All losses sting, including this one. This is probably the annual stinker where Reid makes Kotite look like a good coach.

That said, why does Reid always have that one game where he just looks completely inept and unprepared? Is this the weekend the in-laws come the visit or something to throw him off?

What bothers me is Washington is one of the worst defenses in the league and you can only manage 12 points? I don’t care that Kolb had to play, the team’s confidence in him was he was the reason they traded away McNabb. You still could not find a way to get the ball to Maclin, Jackson, and Celek? If Reid was wrong about Kolb, it further proves that Reid is good but far from great as a talent evaluator. Not to mention how wrong Peters is making them look.

That debacle at the end of the first half was Reid’s equivalent of Rich Kotite not knowing when to go for 2 because the chart was wet.

The defense got trucked in the first quarter. Mikell got raped on that first drive. Then they could not get off the field at the end of the game when they needed a big stop. With all the high draft picks they’ve spent on that defense, it has to be better. Yea I know they only gave up 17 points, but they couldn’t get off the field fast when needed.

Sometimes it's just fun to take the family for a spin around the lake in the old boat. Even if it's not your family or your boat, and they're screaming for you to stop.

But I mean I guess that’s my point. I feel like I can look a Redskins fan in the eye today knowing that they played maybe their best game of the season (Houston they were better on O) and we played like total dogshit, easily our worst, and they needed to scrape and claw to hang on and win.

I don’t feel “beaten” or dominated in any way. I feel like between the injury and the Eagles beating themselves, it was stuff that’s not going to happen 9 games out of 10.

I was really down about it last night, every loss hurts, especially to the Redskins, who are both terrible and a division rival.

After I slept on it, though, it doesn’t really sting nearly as bad. We lost the game, and everything we did to lose it is easily fixable. Penalties can be worked out, Kolb just needs more confidence to look downfield (I know we only have a week, but Andy and Marty can do great things with QB’s, so I’m not TOO worried) and can probably keep the team going fairly well until Michael Vick’s all right to come back, and our defense did much better after the half.

Also, I agree with this being our annual stinker, at least it wasn’t the freaking Raiders and at least McNabb played really poorly.

Side note: I laughed pretty hard when the announcers mentioned his tendency to throw wormburners and said that that was the type of play we definitely didn’t miss, because that was exactly what I was thinking.

Keith, I respectfully disagree. Here's why.

1. You said the Eagles were “abnormally” ineffective. I don’t think this level of ineffectiveness will be abnormal with Kolb back there. Reid distrusts Kolb and is afraid to give him the reins. Reid has always needed a big-play mobile QB to bail him out, and this year is no different. I really fear a 6-10 season if Vick isn’t back (and for me to write that is serious business).
2. The clock management/playcalling issues are unfixable unless Reid is fired and replaced. He will not change.
3. Vick needs to be signed to an extension and Kolb needs to be traded.
4. I am not sure that Reid knows how to fully utilize Desean Jackson’s talents. Yesterday proved that.

You’re right on about the Philly fan nonsense. Yesterday put that stuff to bed. I’m glad that Donovan got an ovation and that he was booed later on. That’s the right play. He played here for 11 great seasons. Give it up to him for that. He is also the QB for the Redskins. Give him hell for that.

1. I agree that with Kolb back there were going to look bad more then we look good.

2. Clock management has always been one of Reids issues, i just dont understand how he doesnt learn his mistakes and fix them. He seems to have at least one boneheaded clock situation every other game.

3. I cant argue against signing Mike Vick to an extension. Ill leave it at that.

4. This is the only one i dont agree with. Its not reids fault that Desean was ineffective yesterday. Our receivers are big play guys, its that simple, they need to get a big play every now and then to open up the underneath. With Kolb not willing to throw farther then 5 yards their best skills are in the dumpster.
