How are some of the casualties of the Eagles' offseason faring with their new teams?

Phillyyyyyyy's... Babin back ribs. Phillys Babin back ribs... Barbeque saaaaauuuuce.

This week, the Eagles will be playing against two guys that formerly played for Philly, Will Witherspoon and Jason Babin.  Witherspoon was released by Philly in a salary dump move (Spoon was scheduled to make about $5M in 2010); Babin left via free agency.  Both are having good seasons, particularly Babin:

Babin - 24 tackles, 6 sacks.

Witherspoon - 26 tackles, 3 sacks.

Come on, guys... Where was that production in Philly?

Obviously, the Eagles' offseason brought major changes.  Let's take a look at how some of the other players that were with the Eagles in 2009 have fared with their new teams:

Donovan McNabb (Redskins) - 125 of 215 (58.1%) for 1561 yards (7.3 ypa), 5 TD, 5 INT, 78.8 QB rating.  Unimpressive numbers for sure, as McNabb is currently 24th in the NFL in QB rating.  In fairness, McNabb is playing with below average weapons in the pasing game in Washington, and the Redskins are much improved with a 3-3 record thus far.  Still, McNabb has been very average.

Brian Westbrook (49ers) - 2 carries, 6 yards.  3 catches, 25 yards.  One of the best RBs in Eagles franchise history, Westbrook has been a non-factor so far for the Niners.

Sheldon Brown (Browns) -  26 tackles, 1 INT.  The former Eagles fan favorite has not played well with his new team, as he has been beaten on several big plays this season.  Brown had a giant target on him in the Browns win over Cincinnati, in which Terrell Owens had 10 catches for 222 yards.

Jump!

Star-divide

Shawn Andrews (Giants) - Shockingly, he's actually contributing some for the Giants.  He had to sub in for the injured David Diehl against Houston, and did a great job keeping Mario Williams away from Eli Manning

Reggie Brown - Was cut by the Buccaneers.  Currently a free agent.

Kevin Curtis - Battling cancer.

Macho Harris - Currently a free agent.

Quintin Demps - Currently a free agent.

Chris Clemons (Seahawks) - 18 tackles, 4.5 sacks.  In Philly, Clemons was mostly disappointing as a pass rushing specialist (although he did have his moments), and was a disaster on special teams.  But he's found success so far in Seattle, with 4.5 sacks in just 5 games so far.

Chris Gocong (Browns) - 26 tackles.  New system, same player.  No forced fumbles, no sacks, no INTs.  Still isn't making any plays in the 3-4.

Sean Jones (Buccaneers) - 22 tackles.  Oddly enough, the Eagles can use Jones.  He was great in kick coverage last year, an area that has been a problem area for Philly this year.  Jones is starting for Tampa.

Darren Howard - Currently a free agent.

Tracy White (Patriots) - 8 tackles.  Playing special teams for New England.

Joe Mays (Broncos) - 4 tackles.  Mostly playing special teams in Denver.

He had a cancerous testicle removed. His agent contacted all teams and told them of Curtis’ status.

Unfortunately

He may have just needed a wake up call. Reid gave him that

This sounds like the time Buddy Ryan gave a troublesome WR a wake up call by cutting him. Sigh

Incase anyone was wondering ...

Jason Babin is currently ranked 5th overall amongst 4-3 defensive ends on Pro Football Focus. Also, former eagle, Chris Clemons, is ranked 2nd overall amongst 4-3 defensive ends and apparently accounted for 14 QB pressures in seattle’s week 3 game.

However, Trent Cole is the number 1 overall defensive end according to the website. He’s ranked 3rd in pure pass rushing and 1st against the run.

This suggests to me something I suspected before — that our eagerness to upgrade the defensive end position last offseason was misguided. Everyone was getting sacks for the Eagles the last couple of seasons. The biggest problems were at safety and linebacker, one of which has been addressed in a big way. The linebacker position is still a problem though.

Clemons and Babin

are very good! Maybe they just didn’t fit our system. I’m not sure what type of technique Seattle’s and Tennessee’s defensive tackles play. Clemons came in on known passing downs for us because when all he had to do is pin his ears back he was an athletic freak. If he is allowed to just use his athletic prowess I can see him excelling.

by Darth Banner on Oct 22, 2010 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Most of the chatter around getting rid of Clemons suggested his “me first” attitude didn’t sit well with Andy and McDermott

by DLawrence55 on Oct 23, 2010 10:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Witherspoon may have been our coaches’ fault — it would have been nice to see him play the same position for a few weeks in a row. Babin, on the other hand, must have had something click in Tennessee. I mean, he always had the skill and we saw flashes of it, but maybe being “the guy” helped him click for the Titans.

Clemons is really the only other one of note (other than McNabb), and I think we’ll see him markedly slow down as the season progresses.

Some of it also has to do with the complexity of the scheme. We ask a lot of our DE’s. Babin commented that in Tennessee, his job is to basically go full speed ahead and get after the ball.

He was a lazy sack of crap for us who cared more about weed and his “music career”. He’s one of the few Eagles whose success actually annoys me, because he didn’t even try in Philly the past few years.

Great Job at the Spin Cycle

So what you are saying is Mcnabb’s QB rating is low so…. he is average good conclusion. In QB rating your beloved Vick is #1 and the likes of Ryan Fitzpatrick and Vince Young right behind Vick and they are ahead of Tom Brady. You fail to mention that Mcnabb is Top 5 in yards, 2nd in plays over 40yrds and yrds per game and both Moss and Cooley are on track to have their best years as Pros. Great job at spinning so you get the wonderful people of Philly to come to the conclusion that he sucks and is on the decline.

by Marcmittens on Oct 23, 2010 11:00 AM EDT reply actions

He’s wildly inconsistent (much more so than last year), has a lower TD:INT ratio, and has only had one game where he’s really been solid (Houston).

Big plays don’t make up for the many 10-yard slants he flubs. We learned that last year. He’s receded a bit and was arguably not a top-10 QB last year; he may not even be top 15 right now.

Would you rather have Kolb/Vick or McNabb? And do you really think McNabb is still elite? Don’t be butthurt that we would rather have our QBs than your QB.

Who's the one trying to be deceptive here?

Here are the stats you cite to say how good McNabb is:

“Top 5 in yards” — actually 6th

“2nd in plays over 40yrds” — McNabb has 6 in 6 games, Vick has 5 in 2.5 games

“both Moss and Cooley are on track to have their best years as Pros” — if this were true, it would prove only that McNabb is a better QB than Pennington or Campbell, and it’s not even true; Moss is on pace for 1293 yards and 2 TD, vs 1483 and 9 in 2005.

And the rest of the stats:
Passer rating: 24th
Completion percentage: 26th
Yards per attempt: 11th
Passing TDs: T26th
Interceptions: T14th
Sacks taken: T4th

So let’s see…he’s in the middle of the pack in yards per attempt, but high in yards. Congratulations, he threw a lot of passes! He may be hitting some deep balls, but he’s making some big plays for the defense too — among the league leaders in sacks taken and on pace for a career high in interceptions. And despite all those passing attempts and big plays, he’s not getting touchdowns.

Look, league-average QB is pretty good — there are a lot of good QBs in this league. But he’s not elite, and if you think he is, you’re fooling yourself.

by Eric T. on Oct 23, 2010 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Nope, I’m saying he’s been average because I’ve watched him play and he has looked… you know… very average. No spin – just calling them how I see them.

I have nothing to gain whatsoever by saying McNabb hasn’t been great.

i dont understand why san Fran signed westbrook

If they don’t plan on using him. He would be great in that system, plus keep Gore healthy. Curious…

He just doesn’t have much to offer anymore. He’s had knee and ankle problems for years, and he hasn’t been able to get fully healthy. At the wrong side of 30, I don’t see it happening.

by zfg on Oct 24, 2010 12:24 AM EDT up reply actions

so why sign him period?

he’s taking up a roster spot that can go to a young undrafted back, or someone who can help you on specials. its curious to me…
