Dirtiest Players in the NFL, Past and Present
In my last post, I was serious. But now it's time once again for a trip down memory lane with good ol' Uncle Jaws...I give you the ten dirtiest current players in the league, plus the ten dirtiest in history.
TOP TEN DIRTIEST CURRENT PLAYERS
10. Jared Allen, DE, Vikings - Another one that's cleaned up his act a little, but if you watch him, he will still go low on his targets from time to time.
9. Richard Seymour, DE, Raiders - Frequently uses head slaps, foot stomps, and even the occasional punch to help himself when he goes up against better o-linemen. Don't know if he's still doing it in Oakland, but he damn sure did it in New England.
8. Flozell Adams, OT, Steelers - He did most of his dirty work in Dallas, so don't think I'm singling out the Steelers here. He was famous for tripping, to wit leg wipping, opponents that managed to get around his end.
7. Joey Porter, LB, Arizona Cardinals - His career has since pretty much fizzled out, but his intentional injuring of Todd Heap still lands him on this list.
6. Harvey Dahl, G, Falcons - Always makes the list of the NFL's meanest players. He is not afraid of anyone and will even fight his own teammates.
5. Richie Incognito, G, Dolphins - He's been on his best behavior so far in Miami, but he's long had one of the worst reputations in the league among offensive linemen.
4. Cortland Finnegan, CB, Titans - Seems to draw a fine every week (3 consecutive in September through October); said he "aspires" to beat out Hines Ward as the dirtiest player in the NFL.
3. Albert Haynesworth, DT, Redskins - Stomped on the unprotected head of Dallas center Andre Gurode...need I say more?
2. Hines Ward, WR, Steelers- Master of the blindside block; famously earholed Keith Rivers of the Bengals, breaking his jaw and ending his season. Tough, win-at-all-costs little bastard, last year ranked number 1 in this category by his peers.
1. James Harrison, LB, Steelers - Takes over for Ward at number 1 on the list due to his recent actions and Alex Mack's revelation that Harrison was actually doing more, spearing guys on the ground, among other things. And upon being punished, he reacted like a spoiled little girl and threatened to retire.
TOP TEN DIRTIEST PLAYERS IN NFL HISTORY
10. Johnny Sample, DB, Colts, Jets, Steelers, Redskins - His autobiography is actually called "Confessions of a Dirty Ballplayer;" he once said "I was never dirty, except when I played against you." A proud, tough son of Philadelphia.
9. Andre Waters, S, Eagles - I love watching Waters' highlights. Known as "Dirty" Waters, a name bestowed by famed Eagles-Hater Dan Dierdorf, Andre would fly across the middle to try and decapitate his target.
8. Warren Sapp, DT, Buccaneers, Raiders - As a member of the Bucs, laid a cheapshot blindsider on the Packers' Chad Clifton, who was very much removed from the onfield action. Clifton couldn't walk for five weeks, and Sapp stood over him hooting and hollering afterward.
7. Hines Ward, WR, Steelers - Yeah, he's on here. He throws nothing but cheap-shot blindside blocks. He's been flagged, fined, and his hits have led to severe injuries, but he doesn't care. He'll take out any defender, as long as they don't see him coming.
6. Charles Martin, DT, Packers - Had the numbers of Bears players written on his game towel...a hit list. Classic. Had the NFL's longest suspension before Haynesworth danced the Andre Stomp. Once picked up Jim McMahon and spiked him on the ground, ending his season.
5. Steve Wisniewski, G, Raiders - The third Raider of this list, and we're only on 5...I think the Black Hole would be proud. A terrific player, but incredibly dirty, Wisniewski would eye-gouge, crackback block, cut-block...the list goes on. Frequently took opponents out at the knees.
4. Rodney Harrison, S, Chargers, Patriots - Despite numerous fines and suspensions, Harrison flew around the field with reckless abandon, smashing anyone who got in his way. He showed no remorse or respect, once smashing Jerry Rice helmet-to-helmet. In his 15-year career, he always topped the dirtiest player list, according to his peers. He accumulated nearly a quarter million dollars in fines.
3. Jack Tatum, S, Raiders - Nicknamed "The Assassin," Tatum made a point of punishing his opponents with incredible ferocity. One of the hardest hitters in the history of the league, he infamously paralyzed Darryl Stingley with a vicious helmet-to-helmet hit.
2. Bill Romanowski, LB, Raiders, Eagles, Broncos - What a son of a bitch Romo was...finally left the league after breaking his own teammate's face in camp. A spitter, a cheap-shotter, a roid monkey, and an alleged racist, Romo embodied the spirit of "dirty."
1. Conrad Dobler, G, Cardinals - He didn't just play dirty, he REVELED in it. Against defenders who put their hands up to deflect a pass, he'd punch them in the stomach. Punching, spitting, kicking, gouging...you name it, Dobler did it. One of the most hated players in the history of the game, he simply did whatever the hell he wanted. Sort of the "Ogie Oglethorpe" of the NFL.
These lists weren't meant as indictments or as commentary, they were just for fun. Please share your won thoughts and feel free to add anyone you feel should be on either one.

Fred Biletnikoff?
He wasn’t necessarily a dirty player, but he sure did use a lot of stickum. Kind of the same thing.
i should be on this list
i took out many players on my football team at practice and more opposing players in games
McNabb + votes = Honolulu = 3rd rounder, Lets get em Tiger!
draft pick awareness week starts week 8 with voting mcnabb into the probowl
project donolulu-JimmyK
Nice, my school loved me,
they kept stats on how many fights I got into, how many brawls I started… How many kids I took out of games, season ending injuries, and the types of injuries…
Nobody should be able to outdo me anytime soon, My coach gives a speech at the beginning of every season about how I was the only one that had any fight in me when we’re down 55-10, and how I knew how to play the game…
I am an angry person.

Erik Williams should be top 5, Greg Lloyd was an honorable mention
Williams liked to go for the throat and was the player most responsible for the NFL enforcing illegal hands to the face penalties. If someone would get around him he would also be known to take a shot into the side of the defender’s knees. He played for Dallas so I was already predisposed to hating him but the fact is he was a real scumbag.
Lloyd wasn’t the dirtiest player in the game but on more than one occasion I remember him running down the field to take an unnecessary cheap shot on a guy he probably didn’t need to hit (similar to the Warren Sapp hit on Cliffton)
i love dawkins
but he has speared guys on the ground numerous times
This is a resurrection
I'm back from the dead
They told me quit a long time ago
But I conquered instead
I had dreams and visions
Swirling around in my head
I had this hunger deep inside of me
That has to be fed
nah son
I looked forward to him drilling people when I watched him. He made the defense so exciting, and just because he was part of the eagles doesnt mean he didnt play dirty. And when I say dirty I dont mean cheap, I mostly mean nasty
I'M GONNA TRIP BALLS!!! -Frank Reynolds
Yea I haaaate hines ward
and how much the announcers talk about what a tough wr he is for blind siding people. I think hes a cheap shotting bitch and I hope someone annihilates him one day.
I REALLY don't understand Ward's place on this
a blindside block far from the ball almost made me tear a ligament in my right foot, I got up, complimented the block and limped off, you should always be prepared to get hit when you are on the field
That Finnegan guy is a bitch...
Just because he fights people and stuff like that doesnt mean he’s in the top, he tries way to hard to do what he does… He isnt even scrappy.

To be honest
going for the knees then wasnt that illegal, atleast not until a year or two before he was traded…
Also going for the knees isnt that dirty.. I’d say Babin is dirtier than Allen

Even before it was "illegal" players had big problems with defenders going at the knees.
I’ve always heard it talked about as being dirty pool. At the time it was one of those plays that was technically legal, but still dirty.
Roy Williams? The guy pretty much made the horse collar tackle famous.
"I hate listening to people's dreams. It is like flipping through a stack of photographs. If I'm not in any of them and nobody is having sex, I just don't care. "
I don’t think he’s intentionally a dirty player, it’s just a convenient way to tackle people when they’re running right by you all the time.
No, it was dirty. He would not pull them straight down, he pulls them back, and usually a players foot would he locked in the turf, which had a good chance of twisting their knee or ankle. I remember he did it to McNabb, who was lucky to escape uninjured.

But I think BrianS is trying to say that he wasn’t intentionally hurting people. When he was horse-collaring people it wasn’t illegal, and his intent wasn’t to hurt people — just tackle them, even if it was a very poor method. Since its been illegalized he hasn’t done it very often, which is why he might not be considered “dirty”.
Got rational behavior? ...apparently not.

That is what I disagree with. I think R Williams knew all too well that there was a good chance of taking the player out. After injuring a few players, how could he not?

No Chuck Cecil??????
This guy was constantly drawing fines back in the early 90’s and his players, his players have kinda taken on his persona , ex: Finnegan. Interesting 2 that were gonna see his secondary this weekend, Maclin has got 2 be extra aware of his surroundings this week because finnegan will try 2 cheapshot him.
Ill give you one more Travis Johnson-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egbiNFcY4fI is the link on youtube
This guy knocked out Trent Green and then continued to talk smack to his unconcious body. That alone has to make him a top 10 player on either lise(dont know if he is even still in the league)

I remember that, and I don’t think it was as bad as it seems. While Green did not necessarily throw a chop block, that type of block can really do some damage. Green brought that on himself by diving into the players knee. I think Johnson was just a bit upset at someone undercutting him. I can see how it looks bad though.

How to feel about the list
So how does everyone feel about people on this list? In my opinion James Harrison is a thug. Guys like Harrison, Flozell Adams come off dirty with intention to hurt but guys like Rodney Harrison, Tatum, Ronnie Lott, Romanowski are more tough guys that are just hard hitters.

Just ahh...
If Hines Ward isn’t even the dirtiest player playing today, how is he on the all time list when the #1 isn’t? Is it just a “lifetime achievement” type thing? Cuz that would make sense.
Nope.
Dirty is really relative
Dirty is anything illegal that a guy tries to get away with…and what’s legal/illegal changes every year.
Guys could legally do things a decade ago that would be considered dirty by NFL standards today.
Heck, guys could do things last week that will be considered dirty on Sunday
"EFF YOU, WE'RE WINNING ANYWAY!!!!!!" (Bye, Dawk)
My opinion is that dirty means trying to intentionally harm someone. Whether its within the rules or not, trying to seriously hurt someone. Obviously its football and you’re gonna hit people and they’re gonna get hurt, but when you start trying to injure people, it becomes dirty.
For example, driving a running back into the ground and breaking his collarbone? Not dirty. Tackilng a running back and then stomping his collarbone with your foot? Dirty. One is clearly malicious while the other is football. I don’t think Dunta Robinson’s hit was dirty, just illegal. The same with James Harrison, even though I don’t think that was his fault (unlike Robinson he was trying to hit the guy in the stomach/chest and the player ducked. Robinson was aiming high). Neither one was trying to injure the player they hit. Merriweather’s hit was clearly dirty; he leapt over one of his teammates in order to spear Heap in the helmet.
Got rational behavior? ...apparently not.
