This is my case that Kevin Kolb is a good QB. So be warned, if you are a Kolb hater, this may be the part where you stop reading. For those of you objective enough to hear my argument please read more after the jump.
I was really frustrated by the majority of the Eagles fan based that called Kevin a bust after his early performances this year. They basically didn't think he was capable of doing much of anything. But I didn't see it that way. I did the best I could to keep everything objective with Kevin.
First off, Kevin has started 4 games so far in his career. Those are NO, KC, GB (only a half), and now SF. Just for sake of argument, he played 1/2 last week vs. Washington as well. So I will count GB/ Washington as 1 game. So far in 4 starts, Kevin has thrown for 250 yards in 3 of the 4 games. He has thrown 6 TDs and 4 ints. But lets go over these Ints. If you remember, Kevin threw 1 hail Mary at the end of the game that was a pick. And last week vs. Washington Kevin threw a hail Mary at the end of the game. Those 2 ints don't count, those are desperate plays, and last minute attempts at heroics. So a decent argument could be made that Kevin had thrown 6 TDs and 2 picks in his 4 games of play. I think those are spectacular numbers for the first 4 starts for a QB.
Also, lets look at the Washington game. I know Kevin was getting killed by the media and the fans. People were calling him captain check down and all that funny stuff. But I posted last week, Kevin was probably told not to throw against that deep cover 2 by Washington. They basically took away anything deep and they NEVER blitz causing the Eagles to actually run the ball and take short check downs. Bye the way, those check downs were effective and put us in the game to win. Kevin didn't check down because he sucked at making read or he was afraid to throw deep. Rather he took what the defense gave him. Mike Vick was doing the same thing. As much as we complained, we still got at least 6-8 yard per check down. Not bad in my book. Not sexy, but not bad.
I also wanted to address a few comments I heard by the Fox broadcast last week about WR being open. They were NOT open, if the camera were to pan down a little; you would have seen a LB or CB hiding below. So the second Kevin throws that, it’s picked. That or he has to throw above the head of the defender, with out loosing velocity and with out getting it picked. That’s impossible, if you have to put air under those throws, they get picked. So a few of those accusations were just stupid.
I am not hear to tell you Kevin is the next coming. But if you look at his stats this year, as it stands, he has thrown 2 TDs and 1 Int with a QB rating of 84 and a 63% with 478 yards. (aver 239/g,). And the dude has only started 2 games this years, and really only played 1 all the way threw (but I am combining Was/ GB to equal 1g). He is currently ranked 19 at this moment. Imagine where he would have been ranked if he would have started vs. Jacksonville? I think he would have done was in that game, but that’s not something we can measure right now.
Oh, and just to further my point. Donovan McNabb is currently ranked 21 (below Kevin). Donovan has 4 TD, 3 Ints, 1300 yards (aver 260/g), 57% comp, and a rating of 82. And Donovan had 5 starts.
I recall that in the beginning of the season, we all agreed to take our lumps with Kevin. But we really haven't had to take too much lumps. Granted we took some, but not that much. With all his lumps he is exactly where we projected him to be @ 19. I recall our poll putting him @ 17-19 to start to season, he is currently better than 13 other QBs in the league, and he hasn't played as much as the other guys. So I think we all need to stop saying we don't know what we have in Kevin. We know exactly what we have in him. A QB who throws 275/game 75% of the time, and who is just OK 25 % of the time. That isn't a bad thing, if he threw 275 for 75% of his games; he would have thrown for 3300 yards in those games alone, so if he only threw 150 in the remaining 4 games. that would mean he would have thrown for 3600 yards. That’s OK for a young QB. We know exactly what we have in him. We just need to be patient and give him time, like every other good QB, he will learn and get confidence and get better
