Under Review: A Win in Dallas was Inches Away
What should Andy Reid tell the Eagles this week as they prepare for Saturday’s Wild Card game in Dallas? What can you tell a team when it has to play the same opponent that left it for dead just days earlier?

Bob Ford: Fate brings Eagles back to Dallas | Philadelphia Inquirer | 01/06/2010
A rematch win in the Saturday wild-card game against the Dallas Cowboys would certainly be a signature moment for the Eagles, particularly since they left an undistinguished scrawl - and a bunch of other nasty stuff - on the turf at Cowboys Stadium last weekend.

Eagles' Jackson honors dad in breakout season - NFL - Yahoo! Sports
Through his tireless effort, which included driving the highways of California from Chatsworth to Long Beach and all points between to get his son the best training, Bill Jackson helped create one of the most dynamic forces in the NFL. If the Eagles are to overcome the Dallas Cowboys – who swept them in the regular season – on Saturday night in the first round of the NFL playoffs, DeSean Jackson is going to have to be every bit of his dynamic self. And maybe tap into some of his father’s spirit

Giants fire another coach | ProFootballTalk.com
When we watched Giants owner John Mara's epic press conference, it was obvious that changes were coming in New York. Defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan only lasted a few more hours. Two days later, the team has also fired defensive line coach Mike Waufle. Waufle was reportedly a popular coach, but his unit was the most disappointing and expensive on the team.

Eagles understand they have no margin for error vs. Cowboys | Philadelphia Daily News | 01/06/2010
Mistakes will not be tolerated. Mistakes can not be tolerated. Not if the Eagles expect to win, anyway. That's the message the team is sending. It's the message it received after two losses to Dallas this season.

Seahawks Look at Heckert | Philadelphia Daily News | 01/06/2010
Cleveland is reportedly not the only team interested in Eagles general manager Tom Heckert. Seattle has requested permission to speak with Heckert, ESPN's John Clayton reported. That report was confirmed to your Eagletarian by a league source.

Shanahan

Who cares. The guy has what… 1 post-season win after Elway? When you look at it, Shanny and Snyder are made for each other. High priced free agents that don’t pan out? Oh Shanny had them in gobs. It should be great. Its a three-team division until the Redskins prove they aren’t just a Division 1A team.

Let the beasting begin.

Redskins will be good eventually

They have a sick defense. If Shanny can build a half decent offense they’ll compete

+1

Shanahan the coach is solid, especially on offense, but his downfall was personnel.

Bruce Allen is good with personnel.

Bruce Allen is good with personnel.

Good enough to win 0 playoffs game from 2003-2008.

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

I was wondering what kind of success he’s had.

Frankly, it looks like his role has been marginalized. Shanny has final say.

Am I the only one

who believes Vince Young deserves that Comeback Player of the Year Award? I mean, all he did was bring back an 0-6 team to an 8-8 record, two wins shy of actually making the playoffs.

by LegendKnight22 on Jan 6, 2010 5:19 PM EST reply actions

meh … Brady came back from major knee surgery and went for just shy of 4400 yards 65.7 completion percentage 28TDs and 13 INTs … and took his team to a 10-6 record and the playoffs … that is pretty damn good.

Vince Young through for 1800 yards in 12 games 10 TDs and 7 INTs and a 58.7 completion percentage. At that rate he probably would have had 2400 yards (24th in the NFL) 13 TDs (23rd in the NFL) not exactly stellar numbers that’s less than Matt Stafford had and he only played in 10 games as a rookie on a horrid Lions team.

The Titans beat just 2 teams with an above .500 record during Vince’s run and only 1 of them is a playoff team (Cardinals) I would say Chris Johnson and the Titans D were more of a cause than VY was. It’s no shock that Chris Johnsons attempts went up about 10 a game when Vince took over.

True

But, Brady came back and was expected to return to form. On top of that, he had two WR’s named Wes Welker and Randy Moss.

I can return from an ACL and put up numbers with those guys playing with me.

Young came in after the team started 0-6 and lead them to a 8-8 record by seasons end missing the playoffs by about a game or so which is remarkable in itself especially in the AFC, becoming the 1st team in NFL history to start a season 0-6 and then win its next 5 games, and also the 1st team in NFL history to begin a season at 0-6 and finish with a record of .500 or better.

Stats don’t speak the whole story. Maybe it’s just me and my hate for the Pats. And Brady. Fucking Brady.

by LegendKnight22 on Jan 7, 2010 5:15 PM EST up reply actions

Vince Young did not “lead” the Titans to 8-8 he managed games … Chris Johnson led that team. True stats don’t tell the whole story but CJ getting 10 more carries a game from Collins to Young was more of an impact than the actual QB change.

Agree to disagree, personally I think VY is a horrid QB and will prove that next year.

That Under Review article is great.

Thinking back, I watched as long as I did because there were so many close plays (read: lost by an inch) I figured we still had a shot at doing something. The Cowboys basically played a perfect game though. It could happen again, but it’s doubtful. Just as it’s doubtful we will stink up the joint on offense as much as we did.

by NOLACuse on Jan 6, 2010 6:17 PM EST reply actions

Biggest problem on offense

We need to get McNabb comfortable in the pocket. If defenses aren’t going to let him outside the pocket where he’s at his best then we need to have some well executed plays that keeps the defense from just pinning their ears back. Our runs were going for 1-3 yards each time and it ended up being 2nd and 3rd and long almost every drive — that can’t happen. If we McNabb gets flustered early I don’t see this offense scoring enough points.

I expect the defense to give up at least 20 points, so our offense has to get it done

LOL @ Philly being "inches" away from the win

Funny how everybody forgets our missed FG, turnover in the red zone and he fact that Romo overthrew Ogletree when he was wide open deep too.

This game is going to be tough because it’s Dallas and Philly, but stop trying to make it like Philly didn’t try or was “this close”. It really wasn’t close at all.

your right, it wasnt close, the Birds never showed up…. but that wasnt us out there
I dont see that happening again

I think it was

Yeah, Dallas made a few mistakes. But the Eagles made a ton more. Stupid mistakes. Fumbling in the Red Zone. Dropped passes. Dumb, dumb mistakes.

If it was 7-7, 14-7, that’s a whole different ballgame. Now maybe the Cowboys still win, but the Cowboys are not 24 points better than the Eagles. I think we’ll see that Saturday.

I think you did a good job explaining this. I don’t mean to talk shit, Cowboys fans, I’ll admit that right now on a scale 1-10 of confidence, I’m about a 3.5 — I think the O has the talent, but didn’t execute well, but that the D is just playing too shorthanded, especially at LB.

This game was similar to the 44-6 game. It started out 3-3, and then was 10-3, but there were a couple key plays that got it out of hand quick. INT leads to Eagles TD, Pacman immediately fumbles and they tack on 3, and then the fumble returns. The Eagles weren’t more talented than Dallas by that wide a margin, as the first game in ’08 suggested.

The Eagles missed a wide open TD pass on a pattern that 5’s hit on plenty of times this year, which would have tied the game, and then fumbled deep in the redzone when it was 14-0. They had a good drive and I think, just based how they were moving the ball, that they get 7 there. Instead, they made an unforced error and pretty much had no choice but to be one-dimensional from then on.

They played awful, yes, and it’s not fair to say they almost won. But there were a just a few plays that if they went the other way could have changed the “spiraling out of control nature of the game”.

Compare to the 44-6, game. Early in the 2nd half, just after Witten’s pass to TO, Barber fumbled. Dallas was probably down too much even if they got the TD there, but there was basically a 14 pt swing that put the game completely out of reach. Dallas probably loses w/o that fumble, but complexion of the game was changed.

Likewise, the PI call (Newman?) on the pass to Jackson that set up an Eagles TD late in the second half. If that pass is knocked away, it definately changes the complexion of the game.

Execution

I want to see Romo blitzed every other play if not more, if only to keep hitting him and put that expectation in his head.

But, I would not be surprised if McDermott does not go to the blitz Saturday. Yeah, he’ll test Romo early like he tried to do last time, but if Romo reads it and gets the ball out then the Eagles D will probably play it the same way and just try to execute better. Andy Reid said it already. This article just digs into the film and I think does a good job explaining why Reid probably meant it.

They were

Last summer. That was a beat down. I do think the Boys will win this weekend too nowhere near in such a dominant fashion again.

by MG77 on Jan 7, 2010 1:11 AM EST up reply actions

shanny is an average coach with an above average record because he got to beat up on the Chiefs, Raiders, and Chargers who have all had their time as one of the league’s worst teams at some point. he had elway and Davis and that helped him,

he’ll help their running game, but until the redskins learn that team chemistry is more important than signing the big name free agent each offseason, they will be last in the east.

I’m just hopeful they keep Jason Campbell under center for a long, long time.

Chase Utley is so good that on one pitch he stole second, third and the shortstop's hat.

by ajr142 on Jan 7, 2010 10:17 AM EST reply actions

and Shanahan is inconsistent

with player personnel, so the Redskins obviously have not learned the team chemistry lesson yet. As you say, hopefully they will also keep Campbell around a long time, since he really doesn’t do much for their team. I predict some early improvement with Shanahan but, long term, their personnel issues will likely keep them from being more than an occasional threat to the Eagles.

by crackpipe on Jan 8, 2010 3:35 AM EST up reply actions

Shanahan is good and bad

He’s a good coach. He’s a bad general manager. The team will improve from his coaching but, over time, will only rise so far due to player weaknesses and associated locker room drama. His coaching can win more than Zorn, so he’ll keep his job but, more importantly to Philly fans, his management will prevent the Redskins from consistent success. He’ll be there a long time and Philadelphia should nearly always win during his tenure. So this is an excellent hire from the perspective of an Eagles fan.

by crackpipe on Jan 8, 2010 3:30 AM EST reply actions

I've hated Shanahan since my fantasy football days

He used to play games with the injury reports and deactivate players last minute. I’ve taken some goose eggs because of him.

That may be sour grapes but the guy just can’t lose enough for my liking. I can’t wait to hang 2 L’s on him every year.
