Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Found this on the National Football Post. The Bills fired their entire coaching staff today, and the first replacement mentioned... Sean McDermott. This is not good...

"Buffalo is also making plans to interview several current assistant coaches to fill their head-coaching void. That list includes Eagles defensive coordinator Sean McDermitt, Cardinals assistant head coach Russ Grimm and Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier. Other possibilities include Jets offensive coordinator Brian Scottenheimer and Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Rivera."

The misspelling of McDermott's name aside, The National Football Post is usually a very credible site.

i don't like this

its great that mcdermott’s getting attention for being a good defensive coordinator, but this wouldn’t be good for us. even tho he has struggled in some games this year (cowboys), he seems to know what he is doing. he has been dealing with injuries to key positions and is making the most out of what he has. i would really like to see how he could do with a quality/healthy LB squad, a better safety situation, and another top notch DE.

That was the great thing about JJ he could have easily taken a HC job but he didn’t. It would be a shame to lose McDermott.

Maybe they will take Ted Daisher I’d gladly give that clown up.

Only after one season?

The dude did ok for one season and teams are jumping at him already? He has not even mastered defensive coordinating, how the hell could he be a head coach? Romo raped his outdated schemes last night. I hope the failure(so far) of Spags would make teams think twice about going after Philly Defensive coaches. I would be VERY surprised if someone hires him.

by Route36 on Jan 4, 2010 1:03 PM EST via mobile reply actions

meh

Spags went after 2 years … and he was in the talk for a few jobs after year 1 and stayed for another year because he didn’t feel ready to be a head coach … and the Giants paid him a lot of money.

That’s what I think. Mcdermott has not even proven to be a great DC, he sure as hell can’t be a head coach yet. After year 2, maybe.

Spags was as good as gone

to the Redskins if the Giants didn’t pay him (he only had a one year deal anyway).

If the Eagles win the SB (ugh…) you can without a doubt believe that McDermott will be in the mix for a HC job…unless the Eagles pay him.

Goes with the territory for a young, promising coordinator like McDermott

Actually, if the Eagles were to have a deep run into the playoffs, the head coaching positions will all likely have already been filled.

Damn

I was hoping we could get at least another year out of McD. That would be a big loss, mainly because we don’t have a very good replacement for him on the staff.

The Eagles are the first team in NFL history to have a running back and a wide receiver with 500 yards apiece in the same season before their 22nd birthdays.

There’s talk about him becoming a head coach after that Dallas game? Seriously? As least when Spag was talked about becoming a head coach after one year, he had held 2007 Patriots to 14 points…

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

Good. Let him walk.

Maybe we can find a Johnson disciple who KNOWS HOW TO SEND A F**KING BLITZ. Especially on QBs who die by them and carve up soft coverage.

Really? After yesterday?

I think Sean will be fine, and I’m not saying “fire him” or anything like that. But how’s he proven himself worthy of HC consideration?

This has to be Lions, right?

Crap

And here I was with a vision of McDermott staying with us for the balance of his career, eventually taking over as head coach once Reid walks…

I must be either extremely naive or borderline retarded to have thought that at one point. Either way, this is just a big ol’ log in my Cheerios.

About 10 minutes ago, I was pondering my own existence. Then I decided that it didn't matter.

Question

Does McDermott want to get paid yet take a potentially crappy job (e.g, Bills) and himself getting potentially fired in 2 years?

Coaches have to move on!

I wish Reid would’ve moved on from here! He’s been here too long! Ok Ok haha, im just playin around!! I dont want to cause a “Reid Riot” right now haha. So please dont talk to me about Reid as I was only playing around. For the most part..Though…..(wink)! In all seriousness and back to the subject Coach move on to the next thing! Its part of the biz! I cant worry about it becuz there is nuttn I can do about it!

I dont think Sean would be a good Head Coach, he just looks like a Coordinator.

I dunno HOW...

tho, for some reason I read that McDermott is ranked as the best DC in the game? I know I don’t watch a ton of Eagles games…but I wouldnt’ call McDermott the best in the game..would any of you?

Still…fact remains that his name is out there, National Post isn’t the only one that’s thrown his name out there.

..>Why…dunno, but it goes with the territory of having a successful team and a young coordinator.

keep in mind how banged up our Defense is

When you consider what he has had to work with, it is pretty amazing

exactly … I’m not sure seasoned DC’s would have survived losing 2 starting MLB’s, 1 Starting WLB for part of the season, 1 Nickel Corner suspension and 1 Nickel Corner IR’d, and a Rookie FS.

I’m not making excuses but all things considered I’m happy with how they have stood up.

I don't think the Eagles were as banged up as you thing....

Giants had no starting caliber safeties for a while. The QB of the defense, AP, was a shell of himself all year.

Starting corner was out all year. Basically everyone on the DL was coming off major offseason surgery.

Tuck and Canty..had major debilitating injuries all year even when they played.

Rocky Bernard Sucks.

…The Eagles had a healthy Trent Cole. Samuel and Brown were pretty much in the lineup all year.

McDerrmott is probably better then our former DC, Sheridan was. But you guys certainly did not have the extent of injury on the defense the Giants did (cuz I’m not mentioning em all here either…)

Not sure about that

I think that he left something to be desired Sunday. All that aside, if you are an owner / GM do you think that there is enough of a body of work to judge him on? I don’t.
