The Linc - A ball is dropped on January 3rd

Paul Domowitch: Between the tackles: Cowboys run away with big game | Philadelphia Daily News | 01/04/2010
It was déjà vu all over again for Jeremiah Trotter. Four seasons ago, the middle linebacker was part of a defense whose Achilles' heel was its inability to stop the run. That rather significant flaw ended up killing their Super Bowl hopes in a playoff loss to the New Orleans Saints.

Eagles Notes: Humbled Birds and a Look at 2010
Dallas saw only two linebackers behind the Eagles’ front four and plowed through the nickel defense, piling up 179 yards on 32 rushes – an average of 5.6 per attempt. In the first half – when this game was decided – Marion Barber rushed for 68 yards on eight carries, 8.5 per attempt.

Rich Hofmann: Reid dropped ball for Eagles, but can he recover? | Philadelphia Daily News | 01/04/2010
When an entire busload of players fails to arrive for the biggest game of the season, as the Eagles did yesterday against the Dallas Cowboys, the first place you look is the bus driver. This is on him, on Andy Reid. With that, his toughest week begins.

Eagles Notebook: Tough day for Cole, Eagles' offensive line | Philadelphia Daily News | 01/04/2010
Nick Cole said afterward he thought he had played pretty well, which probably was true early, when the Eagles' biggest problem was getting their offense onto the field.

NFL union: Owners taking steps toward lockout - ESPN
Rookie wage cap, blood testing, benefit cuts, a nearly 20 percent "giveback" and a work stoppage were prominent in a recent communication that NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith sent to player representatives in describing a bleak labor negotiation picture.

Are bashing mcnabb in some sort. It’s ridiculous one loss out of the past seven games and it’s all on mcnabb. Yall are unfucking believable!

by bclancy15 on Jan 4, 2010 3:22 PM EST via mobile reply actions

No one is saying it's all on McNabb

Let me repeat: NO ONE SAID IT WAS ALL ON MCNABB

The McNabb lovers (who are not supporters, they are more hardcore on that), have selective hearing.

We are saying that McNabb squandered away too many opportunities early on and it was embarrassing for him to go and blame the offensive performance on the young guys.

Everyone who watched the game knows the defense was the #1 culprit.

Yes mcnabb

Did miss some throws but the receivers didn’t help with dropping balls either. After desean bobbled that ball and dropped it mcnabb was pissed so everybody missed opportunities

by bclancy15 on Jan 4, 2010 3:28 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

McNabb had NO RIGHT to be pissed at ANYONE last night

He missed a wide open Jackson for six early on and then missed a wide open Maclin early on. On the Maclin throw no one was even near him, it was blown coverage. The fumble looked like it was on him too.. Not that no one else had a bad game on offense, but he was not good

Maclin

Had that it went right through his hands… How can u blame that on mcnabb. Yeah he didn’t put it right in front of him but come on in that big of a game u make that catch!

by bclancy15 on Jan 4, 2010 3:36 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I'll say it again

I dare you to run full speed on a crossing route and have the ball thrown at you 90mph and way behind you!!!! YOU WON’T CATCH IT. McNabb had no one around him and Maclin was open due to blown coverage… You’re putting that on MACLIN??

by Joe_D on Jan 4, 2010 3:37 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I am that's what I just said right?

He should have caught it period.. It went RIGHT through his hands how can u not catch it? I bet if it was scant or celek he would have caught it

by bclancy15 on Jan 4, 2010 3:39 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

You must be blind

To think that was an easily catchable ball…

I'm not the only one..

Even the commentators said he should have caught that ball. Even though it was aikman and Joe buck

by bclancy15 on Jan 4, 2010 3:42 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

Different instances...

You guys are talking about two completely different plays. There was the play on 3rd down early on that Maclin dropped and was a very good throw right on Maclin’s hands that would have converted the 1st down and then some - Maclin’s Fault.
Then there was the play where McNabb escaped a small rush and had Maclin W-I-D-E open on a crossing route that the defense botched and threw it at least 3 yards behind Maclin who could not recover and make the catch - McNabb’s Fault

Dude Joe your “dare” will work against an every day guy but dare Steve Smith, Larry Fitzgerald, or Andre Johnson to do that and that ball is caught I don’t care what you say.

No it wasn't

It wasn’t a great pass, but it wasn’t a bad pass. IT WENT THROUGH HIS HANDS. He absolutely should’ve caught that.

OK I watched it - Thanks for the link

I still say that it was a bad pass. It was behind him. That said, it did go through Maclin’s hands. Sure it wasn’t an easy catch, but these guys are pros, so yeah, he should have caught it.

So if I’m being honest I have to say that there is shared blame there.

I never said it wasn’t … it was definitely a bad pass … but if Maclin was on my team and that ball hit his hands I would be in his ear not McNabbs. As a receiver it’s your job to catch the ball if it hits your hands you were in position to catch it and didn’t and if your getting paid to catch the ball I’ve got even more of an issue with it.

It wasn't a good

pass or catch. I can’t believe we as fans are divided on such a small thing and are mincing to this degree. The pass could’ve been better, and Maclin could have caught it anyway.

I think the bigger point that we all seem to be missing here is that the Eagles — while they thoroughly had their asses handed to them — had some opportunities to make plays even in a bad game. Assuming they revert to something closer to the norm this week, some of those plays they missed last week, they’ll make this week.

It’s not too much of a stretch to say McNabb and Maclin hook up on a similar pass this week, an early drive continues, the Eagles get a lead, call a different game and produce a different outcome.

Even if he catches it

His stride was broken and it would not have been as big of a gain. Hit in stride that’s a possible 6.

Its McNabbs Fault

He should’ve tried harder to tackle Felix Jones…

by Sparki on Jan 4, 2010 3:28 PM EST up reply actions

I think what Joe is saying is ...

McNabb made some bad plays himself so he shouldn’t have even mentioned the young guys. I can think of three big plays that he missed ….

The overthrow to Jackson – 7 points lost.
The play to Maclin – I blame the throw more than the missed catch. Possible 7 points lost.
The fumble. Yes it was a low snap, but it hit him in the hands.

Now the point is not that he was solely responsible for the loss. He isn’t. But he doesn’t need to talk about others when he made a few mistakes himself.

Thank you

That’s all i was saying. In fact, that’s all MOST of us are saying. The casual fan and the McNabb lovers don’t seem to understand those simple points and blame everyone else for those plays. Who was #87 for the Pats in those bud light commercials?

“Sir you fumbled four times, and lost the game!”

Yah! Joe D we agree again! As much as I know you aren’t the biggest McNabb fan, I tend to agree with you here. Its a team sport and you can’t blame everything on one player but he was a HUGE part of the loss and what kills me is once you get him down and upset its almost like he had given up. Instead of rallying the troops it was kinda like watching the Giants Vikings game.

Yes

You’re right. Once he gets flustered he starts losing his cool and it shows in the pocket. When he’s all calm and shows poise he’s brilliant. When he’s flustered and nervous he can throw a bad game, especially when he’s kept inside the pocket. Credit the Dallas coaches for blasting every one of our weaknesses.

by Joe_D on Jan 4, 2010 3:50 PM EST up reply actions

He was asked point blank about the youth

Let’s frame his answers:

Q: “Do you think the youth of this team contributed to the loss”

A: “We showed our youth in situations where everyone would begin to look around to see who was going to make the play instead of stepping up and making that play. That’s something that comes with the territory when you have a young group. I think at this time, having discussed it with the guys, everybody understands it.”

So yes, he says the youth CONTRIBUTED to it, which is OBVIOUSLY true, not that he was perfect.

I actually like how he answered it

I don’t think a dodging the question with BS is necessarily a leadership trait … A leader sometimes has to call people out.

I understand what you’re saying, that he should have taken some more responsibility and called himself out too, but I’m willing to bet somewhere in the course of the press conference he took some blame.

In the end, as long as he and the offense are on the same page about putting last week behind them and playing better this week, I don’t really care what the methods are … as long as Celek and Maclin and Jackson and Avant like McNabb’s leadership style, then I do too.

Saturday's Game will be much closer

From a Cowboy fan- (In case I need to qualify my status, I’ve lived in the Dallas area all my life and am a second generation Cow fan in the process of brain-washing the next)

I hate Philly just like you hate Dallas. I would love to beat Philly 3 times but would rather have played at Minn next week. Andy Reid is a damn good coach, Jackson is bound to break at least one big one this week on Newman, Samuels will jump a route for an int, and the o-line will be more prepared for the blitz packages that were not there in the first game.
I still think that the Cowboys will have success running the ball against Philly if they stick with the nickel in the first half.
Either way, I am too nervous to work.
Bad luck on Saturday.

Still confident going into Saturday.

Philly is not a #2 seed type of team. At least this Philly team. Last season it took them a tie against the lowly Bengals to get in, but once they were in, they made quite a bit of noise. Are they going to win it all this year??? I wouldn’t put money on it, but I’d love to see it happen. The game Sunday was atrocious. There should be a ton of blame put on Sean McDermott, blitzing a total of 5 times in the first half is absurd. When Philly doesn’t blitz, they’re an average, maybe below average defense. McDermott should have been bitch slapped by Andy Reid somewhere in that first half, but Andy has absolutely no balls sometimes and it amazes me. You wanna get over the hump Andy? Pull your balls out of your purse and earn it. McNabb wasn’t awful, but he wasn’t great. Can’t shoulder all the blame. Once the game seemed locked up, the receivers looked to phone it in, but at that point there was no point. I didn’t take this game as a Cowboy statement as much as an opportunity for Philadelphia to really come out fired up on Saturday. The game will lie within the difference in Sunday’s game. The trenches. Philly’s O-line looked overwhelmed, and Dallas’ O-line made Barber look like Emmitt. On paper, Philly is the better team by miles, and miles, but the trenches will tell the story. Look for Weaver, McCoy, and Westbrook to be chipping DE’s and slipping out for screens. Look for the deep ball of course, and look for McCoy to establish a better running attack, as the older Cowboy linebackers may have trouble covering sideline to sideline. Without protection none of that will matter of course. Go Eagles, prove why every year you’re the most dangerous underdog in the league and finally win us a big one huh? Us loyal fans deserve it especially after all the heartache, recent and distant. Figures that I’m a Red Sox fan too, I’m just a glutton for punishment I guess. Go EAGLES!!!!!!

We have beaten zero playoff bound teams this season. Also, to make matters worse, if we lose on Saturday we will be the first team to lose a playoff game to the Cowboys in over thirteen years.
