Eagles 2010 Offseason - Past, Present, and Future: S
One of the biggest issues of the Eagles 09-10 campaign was the ever versatile S position in a JJ's and Sean McDermott's D. Lets take a look at a important topic for the Eagles this off-season, by looking at the past, present (still kinda past but 09-10 campaign) and future.
Previous FS: Dawkins, Brian #20
The heart, soul, and mind of the Eagles Defense for basically a decade. As we all know, the explosive 14 year veteran was lost in free agency last off season to the Denver Broncos. At the time it looked logical not to match the Denver's overpriced offer on him when obviously the Eagles felt his skill sets were diminishing.
Dawkins'08 year with the Eagles
Total Tackles: 75, Sacks: 3.0, Forced Fumbles: 6, Pass Deflections: 6, INT'S: 1
Dawkins'09 year with the Bronocs
Total Tackles: 116, Sacks: 0.0, Forced Fumbles: 1, Pass Deflections: 11, INT'S: 2
He's like Brett Farve, he's freakin immortal. While he did not pressure the QB as much, you have to understand that he was playing a new defense that did not let him get to the QB as much. Plus, he was a better DB this year. He had his most tackles EVER. And if you watched the Eagles last season, we has issues with Tackling. I think his '09 year was very comparable to his '06 or '05 years.
Without Brian Dawkins we ranked 17th in the pass, giving up 216 passing yards per game and 9th in the run giving up 104 yards per game. Eagles ranked 19th allowing 21 points per game. We ranked 12 total defense.
With Brian Dawkins ('08) we ranked 3rd in passing, allowing 182 yards per game and 4th against the rush allowing 92 yards per game. Eagles ranked 6th allowing 18 points per game. We ranked 3rd total defense.
It is obvious now the Front Office made one of the biggest mistakes of their 10 year period.
Present (Past '09-'10 campaign) FS: Harris, Macho #35, Jones, Sean #26
The FSplay this year was one of the many Eagles defensive woes. With 2 different starting FS this season, neither one made a huge positive impact. Often the deep middle was ripe for the picking for opposing offenses. Combine they had 102 total tackles, 1.0 sacks, 2 pass deflections, and 2 INT. Not that great for 2 starting players combine, when there's an ex-eagle had a similar year them self. The Broncos passing defense was ranked third in the NFL. I don't think they have better group of corners than us, but they have a weapon x and we don't period. I don't see Eagles extending Sean Jones contract this off season. But Macho Harris and Quintin Demps still have a lot of potential to fill the void.
Future FS (2010 Draft) : USC Mays, Taylor #2, Tennesse Berry, Eric #14, Texas Thomas, Earl #12

These are the three top S coming into the 2010 draft. All three are physical preseces on the field like former Eagle, Brian Dawkins. They are also all very athletic and fast. But out of these three I think the best for the Eagles to draft is Eric Berry. 5'11'' and 203 ibs, he is very fast and is a ball hawk. He currently leads all NCAA players in total interceptions, interceptions per game, interception return yards, and interceptions returned for touchdowns. People often think of him as the next Ed Reed.
Here is his an example of his physical play. He knocks the daylight out of the guy 95% of Eagles fans wanted last draft.
Also, his highlight reel
Now, who does not want Eric Berry?
Also, I think most Eagles fans know that Taylor Mays is a no-no by now.
Most Disappointing Player in Mobile
Taylor Mays/S/USC: For Mays the week turned into a potpourri of skills he’s likely to struggle with in the NFL; he’ll struggle handling man-to-man coverage assignments and struggle making plays sideline-to-sideline as a true NFL centerfielder. Mays is still a legitimate prospect for the next level but the limitations he displayed this week will reduce the number of teams wanting to acquire him in April.

Also a major reason drafting a S would be more popular than free-agency is b/c of a uncapped year.
Here is some of the big name S that will not be a unrestriced FA
Nick Collins FS
Oj Atogwe FS
I believe that the Eagles will have the FS situation sorted out by the start of our '10-'11 season

god, i fucking hope so.
i’m tired of hearing the benny hill music in my head, when i watch our safeties. that’s been happening every since sean considine in my my mind.

At pick 24
What’s the best value that late in the round. I would love a safety but is there a better DE, OG, or LB at 24?
Berry will be gone by then, I suspect
What I would do if it was my job is list the top 2 players at each position that we could reasonably hope to get at that pick, and taken whichever of our no. 1 choices is available at that point.
Berry will NOT slip past top 5
That’s one of the certainties in this upcoming draft.

Isn't Berry a top 5?
we had 44-6
you had 58-14
now we want an eagles SuperBowl win in Dallas next season
thats what i heard
but who knows. maybe if we can lose Vick and a few mid round picks to the Raiders we could move up?
To me the Eagles are like that girlfriend that pisses u off, then u hate her, but the next morning you wake up and remember that thing u love so much about her

Sigh
Berry will be gone 2 hours before our pick.
i disagree...
The front office did not make a mistake letting dawkins go. I don’t care how well he performed in the broncos system. His skill set is suited for a 3-4 now, so he would not have been as good in the eagles’ system. The only thing they miss was his leadership. I am still not paying over 8 million and 4 years to a guy that old. I love the guy, but they knew he could not be replaced, but it was time for him to leave. He could have stayed and chose to go.
It was only a 2 year deal he got and it WAS a mistake.

Draft is still loaded with safeties
There are many names outside of those 3 who are very likely just as good. Morgan Burnett being my favorite. Then there’s Chad Jones, Nate Allen, and Myron Rolle. Mays is just a fast LB who gets beat like a runaway slave in coverage against WRs. Berry is nicknamed the 5th dimension for a reason. I like Earl Thomas, but his size worries my and I think he may end up switching up to CB when he gets to the pros like Nnamdi did. I would prefer Morgan because he is consistent and as sure a tackler as a safety can be. Plus, he can play both safety positions and has crazy good coverage abilities.
Myron Rolle
I love this guy, just everything about him tells me he will be successful in the nfl. later.
I thought this was going to be about more than FS... your title lead me on...
but I would like to say that this was a good post.
thats Cobb on Kolb crime if you ask me... as said by yophillybro

FS is a huge need
Although I stick by the fact that I think we will acquire Kerry Rhodes, If for some reason we don’t we need to look at a coverage safety. We already have a tackler in Mikell so I like Thomas for us. Smooth Transition, great recovery speed. His size doesn’t worry me, because Dawkins wasn’t that big and we all know he was beastly. Thomas also has a great work ethic. I was never a supporter of letting Dawkins go. Especially for a 2 mil difference. His leadership alone was the worth it. Dawkins had an outstanding year in Den because he trained harder then he had in years and played witha chip on his shoulder. Most people thought it was because of the Eagles letting him go, but that chip came from the sports announcers saying he had nothing left his last year here. he would of had the same chip for us. Huge mistake by our front office. I hope they correct it this year either with the acquisition of Rhodes (I’d take Bethea too) or by drafting thomas in the first round.
