McNabb's Trade Value

Cost vs Value

The Eagles have a talented offense and depending on the ofseason they should have a pretty good defense. The Eagles should be able to cotend for a superbowl next year. A lot of people say that we should trade McNabb this year and go with Kolb as our starter. Let's say that Kolb is named the starter and there is no dropoff in QB play next year. The first step after determining that Kolb is the starter would be to trade McNabb. The question becomes are the Eagles willing to trade McNabb to a team that can hurt the Eagles' playoff chances? When you go through the list of teams in the NFL that might want McNabb you separate them in them in two categories:

No:Patriots, Jets, Dolphins, Bengals, Ravens, Steelers, Colts, Texans, Titans, Chargers, Broncos, Chiefs, Cowboys, Giants,Raiders, Packers,Bears, Lions, Saints, Falcons, and Buccaneers.

Maybe:Bills, Browns, Jaguars, Redskins,VikingsPanthers, 49ers, Seahawks, Rams

Of the list of teams in the Maybe category the most unlikely trade partners Bills, Browns, Rams, and Seahawks. Having McNabb won't help these teams make the playoffs  so for trading for a 33 yr old QB does not make sense.

This leaves us with 5 teams that might want McNabb: Redskins, Vikings, 49ers, Panthers, and Jaguars.

What are these willing to give up for McNabb?

If Favre comes back to the Vikings they won't want McNabb, but if they are sure that Favre will retire and stays retired I beilieve they are willing to give up their 1st round pick. However they wont know about Favre's decision until training camp. Also would the Eagles rather face a McNabb led Vikings in the playoffs or one led by Tavaris Jackson?

I can't imagine the Eagles trading McNabb to the Redskins. They almost beat us twice this year and giving them McNabb could mean the difference between us being a 9-7 team as opposed to a team that is 11-5.

The Panthers have Matt Moore, I don't think they are interested in him.

The 49ers are an interesting scenerio. Trading for McNabb would make them a playoff team. They have a good defense and good offensive talent (crabtree, morgan, vernon, gore). Their 1st round picks are too high for McNabb so a 2nd rounder seems more likely. Again giving McNabb to the 49ers can hurt their playoff standings.

The only team in the AFC that could use McNabb may be the Jaguars. However they did give Gerrard a huge contract and the problems with that team have more to do with their defense than their offense.

The question becomes whichteams would want McNabb? What are they willing to give up for McNabb? Will the Eagles get fair compensation  for McNabb? Are the Eagles willing to hurt their Supebowl chances to get the most for McNabb?
