On Sheldon Brown
Note: To all possible critics I have two things to say in defense of this post. Now that it’s offseason we have a lot of time to occupy. It’s about anything other than Kolb Vs. Mcnabb, or whether we can suck a dick for Eric Berry.
In the past years I remember Sheldon as one of the best cover corners in the league. He wasn't out nabbing 6-7 ints a year, but he would just blanket his assignments for 4 quarters 16+games a year. Not to mention the big hits that also became his signature. Now after the addition of ball hawker extraordinaire Asante Samuel, It’s been a different Sbrown out there. Asante monopolizes the attention of the media and fans with his near psychic ability to jump routes, grab balls, and talk smack. He guesses and reacts to routes better than the guys who were supposed to be running them in the first place. So what if he gets burned by those double moves every now and again, so what if Stewart Bradley with his torn ACL could make better tackles. Dude makes mo picks than a March Madness bracket yo.
At least that's the message the coaches seem to send. What does this have to do with Brown? Well this year I saw a guy who once didn't allow a single passing TD for an ENTIRE season getting burned by the same double moves that haunt Asante, and not just once. Times when he could have wrapped up, he just threw his shoulder in there and let the ball carrier bounce off, which resulted in lost yards and at least one TD. I realize that having Macho Harris as your backup sucks, but come on. Bottom line, he became more liable in pass coverage than I have ever seen him, but racked up a career high in interceptions.
The most solid lockdown corners in the league do an awe inspiring and crucial job, yet get little to no attention. Let's face it, no one wants to watch a year’s worth of pass deflects and broken up catches in a highlight reel. Sheldon is tired of being the unsung hero. Asante was an embarrassment anytime the ball wasn’t in the air, but as long as he got picks Andy and the rest of the coaching staff turned a blind eye. He even went as far as saying, “They didn’t bring me here to tackle.”Now he’s going to his second Pro Bowl and Sheldon remains one of the lowest paid DB’s in the NFL.
We have one of the best cornerback tandems in the league here, but I’m nervous about the way this is going. Sheldon should go back to his old ways instead of trying to be Asante Lite. Asante has tremendous closing speed usually allows him to recover if he takes a risk and gets played. Sheldon’s 30 year old body with problematic hamstrings does not. And Asante has some serious issues that NEED to be fixed. The coaches have to avoid setting a precedent by just letting his shit slide with no consequence. Otherwise, our secondary is going to get torched from always trying to make the big play and Asante will end up in a wheelchair from the last time he tried to attempt the human torpedo tackle.
Lastly, I just wanted to say respect to BGN's regular posters. Just writing this little rant gave me some insight into the huge amount of work that gets put into creating some of these posts. You guys are rockstars.

I honestly wonder if Sheldon did more gambling because he was hurt for the last half of the season; he knew he has going to get burned by a quick receiver anyway, so might as well try for the INT and hope for the best?
thats what Im thinking.

Has It Really Been a Different Brown?
Maybe I’m ignoring the obvious with this post, I don’t pretend to be any kind of football expert…….
Obviously at the end of the season Brown wasn’t playing up to his usual level, most likely due to the injury. I question if Brown really became a ‘gambler’ or if we are just looking at a few plays, his high interceptions, and assuming that he must have changed his style. Honeslty, I rarely get more than a general impression of how most players did in a game (obviously there’s the QB and other exceptions). Its hard to make fair evaluations after one emotional viewing of a live game, obviusly some people can do it better than others.
Brown had an excellent year last year, giving up just the Fitzgerald TD in the title game. It definitly wouldn’t have been fair to expect the same kind of year. I just question the idea that Brown really did start to gamble (significantly more) this year, or if he became less physical. I’m not saying its not true, I’m just skeptical. I’d definitly be interested in hearing what someone who really watched Sheldon might think. I’m not looking for stats, but someone who watched and compared his actual play these two years and can say “Yeah he really did become a gambler this year”

With the exception of the gruesome twosome in Dallas, where the injury may have still had its toll, the PFF guys think he had a pretty good year.
I noticed Brown pulling some carbon copy Asante moves out there before I checked out their yearly stat sheets. I’m not discounting the loss of dawkins and the hamstring injury, they definately made things a hell of a lot harder on him. I feel that years of feeling underappreciated and seeing not only what Asante got away with but celebrated for may have caused him to reevaluate his style. Almost like, “Hey wait I can take risks all the time too! Send me to the probowl!”
No, you guys are tripping
Sheldon Brown was playing half the year with like 40 different injuries. He had no time to get healthy cause we had no DB’s behind him. Let him get healthy and he’ll be the same person.
I tend to agree. But if Sheldon doesn’t get paid, I do think we could see some real problems start to develop.

I'd almost like the Eagles
to do a McNabb with Sheldon. Maybe not add any years to his deal, but throw him some money so he’s appreciated for the rest of the time he’s here.
I don’t know if that’s possible with so many young players and guys who need extensions, but if there’s any year you can throw loot at a guy without consequnces, it’s 2010, right?
Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome
do u really think
that going into next season eagles coaching staff is gunna allow asante to jump whatever route he pleases and get burned as a result again? No way. we saw what happend this year and if we as fans know this, i guarentee we will see an asante who can atleast make and tackle next year

not everyone can have derrell revis on their team
brown is good, much better than asante….. asante has made it clear that he doesnt get paid to tackle he just loves thorwing his girlish figure at the receiver whether he conects or doesnt…. sheldon kinda fell apart a little towards the end of the year but he was battling w/ injuries…. he will be back this year ull see hes def the more reliable guy to shut down a receiver
Who is this “Sheldon Brown” you speak of, and why do you bring him up here at McNabbvsKolbNation.com?
Kidding aside, it is hard to judge when a player is going to start declining. IIRC, Troy Vincent and Bobby Taylor were 33 and 31 when they were let go, and it was perfect timing (Troy had one decent season in Buffalo, and Bobby played just one more season). Once a CB loses even a 1/2 step, they are basically done at that position.
Sheldon was drafted as their replacement, so it is not a stretch to say the Eagles will draft a CB early. While it is possible Sheldon has a solid year or 3 left in the tank, I seriously doubt the Eagles would give him a new contract at this point. That, combined with the high probability that the Eagles draft a CB high, could mean Sheldon will be quite unhappy this summer. I wonder how he will handle it.
Regarding Brown picking up “bad habits” from Asante, I believe his injuries had more to do with his (at times) lackluster play than anything else. All in all, I thought Brown put in a gutsy performance this year.
Lastly, I think Asante is a bit overrated. He has a great anticipation, but he gambles a bit too much. Sure, he can get multiple picks jumping routes off of the Josh Johnsons and Jason Campbells of the world, but he is easily set up by more crafty, veteran QB’s. So the strongpoints of his game diminish quickly when facing a team with a good QB-WR combo.
another point that might be interesting to think about
for years Dawkins was the man in the secondary. i think that without a doubt Sbrown looked up to him. now that he is gone there isnt the physicality on defense. maybe having dawkins gone firing people up made a difference idk just throwing that out there
is at peace with the fact that i am a DICK.... i am good at it.... it is what i do.... it defines who i am.... will i be hated?? most definitely... do i care?? hell no...
Eh I don't think so personally
These guys are professional athletes. Making millions, i really don’t think they need anyone else to motivate them. They got this far on their own.
good point
but i mean just imagine your a rookie in the secondary and your on a team with dawkins, sure you got there on your own but i highly doubt you dont say to your self man that guy is the shit i want to be a badass like that

agree with TS here
and to be honest not everyone needs to be screamed at or flex their arms to get all fired up. a lot of times it comes from within
E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!
He wants to get paid... and mabe it was also scheme
you have to wonder if it was schemed to allow asante and sheldon to do what they were doing. Beyond that… he wanted more ints and highlights to get more $$$
hes an amazing cornerback, can we just agree to that

Yo, Brown did great this year and I think he took more chances at the ball due
to him being injured.. Infact I think he only gave up like 3-4 TD’s which is still pretty good considering half the season he couldnt even run at full speed.
