Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

Sticking Around or Packing the Bags?

With the hype we went into the season and the end result, it is too easy to say that this season was a major dissapointment. With that said, some players rose up while some fell down. I will be analyzing some players with question marks and evaluating them.

QB- Michael Vick

Michael-vick-eagles-falcons-4a56a01ceb92900e_large_medium

With the late off-season of the famous quarterback. The eagles dreamed of another factor to already diverse offense. With a slow start the ex-Ffalcon quarterback made some key plays as well as some points for a roller coaster offense. The quarterback finished his first season back in the nfl with 1 TD and 2 rushing TD's.

Result: While Vick was an positive acquisition, Andy and Companytrade Vick for a 3rd or 4th draft pick. Possible candidate are the St. Louis Rams.

Star-divide

FB- Leonard Weaver

Leonard-weaver-3de29da2066dd273_large_medium

The acquisition of an actualfullback tickled the imagination of the eagles fans with visions of a balanced offense. While this was not true, the eagles did run it more this  season than recent memory (except 07). The talented back was also a huge receiving threat during the season.

Result: Weaver finds that the eagles are his new home witha 4 yr contract. We see the development of a back tandem with LeSean and Leonard.

WR- Jason Avant

Jason-avant-and-desean-jackson-120d4a60e95241d5_large_medium

The WR became a mid-season star with back to back games against the Chargers and Bears with big impact. Emerged as one of our best receivers, while dominating the middle of the field.

Result: A 3 yr deal. Have a good and young set of WR's.

WR- Kevin Curtis

Kevin-curtis_medium

The 08 star fell of the map this season with nagging injuries this season. Fell behind Maclin and Avant on the roster.

Result: With a capless off-season this yr, the fan favorite will be testing the market. Released.

DE- Victor Abiamir

In-abiamiri-012208_medium

The DE and the Eagles were set on Victor Abiamir starting the 09 campaign. But with a knee injury early, was not on the field much this season and has been a huge letdown.

Result: It's time to call him a bust and move on to find a LDE to opposite of Trent Cole. Released

OLB- Chirs Gocong

Chris-gocong_medium

With all the trouble the LB corps of the Eagles had this season with health. The Eagle linebackers struggled all season with coverage, expecailly against the TE. The OLB lost his starting role mid to late season to rookie Mosie Foku.

Result: The LB unit as a whole will be severly evaluated this off-season, but its easy to tell that Chris Gocong will not be an LB for the eagles much longer, with the severity of one needed in the draft. Released

Others

LB Akeem Jordan- Resigned

S- Sean Jones - Released

S- Quintin Demps- Released

QB- Donovan McNabb- Kept but not resigned (yet)

QB- Kevin Kolb- Kept

DE- Jason Babin- Kept

WR- Reggie Brown- Released

(I kept McNabb short and simple to avoid beating the dead horse)

Demps.......

even tho hes a complete knucklehead it may be 2 soon to give up on him, also he may have sumtin in the kick return dept. Also wat are ur thoughts on Bwest????

by goldenbird09 on Jan 16, 2010 2:53 AM EST reply actions

BWest

won’t be back. He’s going to cost $11M against the cap next year

… if there is a cap.

by Smitty2K3 on Jan 16, 2010 10:06 AM EST up reply actions

yeah but

i bet Westbrook may be willing 2 restructure or take a pay cut or watever the case may be to stick around, lets hope so anyway. I REALLY BTHINK HE HAS SUMTIN LEFT IN THE TANK!!!!!!!!!!! Lets remember this is the first offseason in how long that he isnt havin any kind of surgery, i think come trainincamp time hes gonna be feelin fresher than ever. Its def worth looking into restructuring his contract, however if we cant then yeah im wit u 100 percent that 11 million is WAYYYYYYYYY 2 much of a crap shoot.

by goldenbird09 on Jan 16, 2010 3:38 PM EST up reply actions

If he'll restructure...

I’ll take him in a heartbeat! I still love the guy and want him on the team…I just want him at the right price

agreed 100 %...........

if he does go i think were in good shape if Weaver is extended, maybe we get another back in the draft as well. I tell u wat…….. i know teams wont be high on him because of past actions LOL but the kid Blount from Oregon is a beast.

Eh, this was a good read I guess...

But I think we resign Gocong and have him play LB and DE as a Duel threat kinda player, that’ll free up some space for more depth at a postion we need it at.

im wit u on gocong.....

hes worth keepin around but not as a starter and not for starter money, i think hes productive in certain situations such as rushing the QB and stoppin the run. That play was awesome in the dallas game when he came off the edge for the sack with Juqua.

by goldenbird09 on Jan 16, 2010 3:46 PM EST up reply actions

i disagree

mosie foku has way more upside and is more of a true LB

R.I.P, Air McNair & JJ

by number5 on Jan 16, 2010 4:53 PM EST up reply actions

well did you read what I said???

We resign him to play BOTH LB and DE.. Meaning he’s a last resort/situational guy at LB and prolly 2nd string LDE….

Opening up a spot for more depth elsewhere.

Ive been down to earth with it though...

I realize he’s not the best LB, but he’d be a good option as a OLB and DE, we can play him in situational spots at both positions and he’s good on special teams.

why not .......

try 2 aquire Boldin for Vick and Curtis in a package deal, granted they would also have 2 throw us a 4th or a 5th. See how i could be running this Franchise???? Fuk the fat man let me run the organization, ill have us a SB within 3years LMAO.

by goldenbird09 on Jan 16, 2010 3:51 PM EST up reply actions

Please god no, never let this man run a franchise(unless its dallas)

Boldins always hurt now, We would prolly have to piss off one of our promising WR’s to play Boldin and he’s still gonna bitch about money even after he gets paid..

NO way.

Not being an ass but HELL no, I’d rather hell freeze over than trade for Boldin.

by wild_eagle on Jan 16, 2010 7:23 PM EST up reply actions

ehhhhh idk......

he could…….key word COULD be a awesome fit in philly, now im really happy wit the combo of Mac/ Jax but we still need a guy who can go over the middle, i know Avant is that guy but everyone knows DAMN well they would rather have boldin over Avant and if they say they wouldnt theyre full of sheeeet.

by goldenbird09 on Jan 16, 2010 8:11 PM EST up reply actions

Problem is that Avant is just as effective and way cheaper...

And Boldin will want to be on the outside and I’d rather let the Dynamic duo of Maclin and Jackson grow and mature than have boldin for 2-3 years…

by wild_eagle on Jan 16, 2010 11:51 PM EST up reply actions

thats wat i meant .....

if we were 2 get Boldin i think Maclin would go into the slot where he would be virtually unstoppable for LBs and safetys 2 cover. Granted its never gonna happen but its fun 2 play fantasy GM lol.

come on bro

i love vick .. he wont net u boldin .. boldins still a star .. he was hurt and he put up probowl numbers .. he would start over maclin easy .. and curtis is not worth anything .. he gets cut .. he makes too much money and u can release him .. reggie brown u cant release .. curtis u can before his bonus kicks in .. no one wants him at that price .. boldin for vick? hahahah .. cardinals still have warner .. if he retires lienart

I would much rather watch Jeremy Maclin develop than trade for Boldin. For all we know, Maclin could wind up better than Boldin.

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

by Imp on Jan 17, 2010 11:26 AM EST up reply actions

That jumbeled up comment is actually something I can agree with. I agree with every part, except I’m not sure if the Cardinals will go with Lienart or not. It wasn’t Wisenhunt that drafted him, and I’m not sure Lienart’s stock has ever been very high with Wisenhunt. You’re right though that Lienart is the most likely option if Warner retires

by AZ Eagle on Jan 28, 2010 6:31 PM EST up reply actions

Uh, they give us Boldin for Vick and Curtis and they have to throw in a 4th? More like, we’d have to take away Curtis because no one would take his contract and throw in a 3rd.

I am the people's troll :3™

by yomjoseki on Jan 17, 2010 11:03 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, that trade idea

is preposterous. Boldin is currently worth more than both of those guys, not to mention there’s no guarantee Vick is worth more to Arizona than Leinart.

Leinart with Fitz & Boldin to throw to? Or Vick with no Boldin … but Kevin Curtis holding Steve Breaston’s jock!

Still waiting for the Eagles to Bring It Home For Jerome

by D3Keith on Feb 8, 2010 6:01 PM EST up reply actions

Some issues

Firstly, Curtis was not an ‘08 star (33 catches, 390 yards, 2TDs)…I’ll give you 2007 though and call it a misprint.

Abiamiri’s 24 and has been banged up, it’s too soon to give up on him. I’d prefer to keep him over Babin, even though we saw a preseason and early season spark from the guy.

Same story with Demps, I agree with goldenbird…he’s young. He’s shown some promise, you train out the knucklehead, you don’t give up on it in a 2nd year player.

i hope im wrong but i think Abiamiri is becoming the Shawn Andrews of the defensive line LOL

by goldenbird09 on Jan 16, 2010 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

And you might be right

I just think it’s too early to determine that. Give him another year.

"EFF YOU, WE'RE WINNING ANYWAY!!!!!!" (Bye, Dawk)

by jalarsen1 on Jan 16, 2010 4:32 PM EST up reply actions

Abiamiri

will be kept. Like jalarsen said above, he’s too young to give up on him just yet. Now if he shows up to camp and sucks like Jerome McDougle then we’ll cut him. But I’d rather keep him over Babin.

Also I think we bring back Gocong. We’re going to need to re-sign at least one or two of Jordan, Gocong, and Gaither and I think Jordan and Gocong are the two most likely to be brought back.

Demps won’t be released, but I wouldn’t mind if he was. Other than as a kickoff returner, hes never impressed me. I don’t think he has the head or even the talent to be a starting safety. But he’ll be back.

One of Reggie or Curtis will be back. I think Brown is the cheaper of the two so I think he’ll be back.

by Smitty2K3 on Jan 16, 2010 10:15 AM EST reply actions

I agree that Abiamiri will be back, but it is looking like he is a bust.

I really don’t know that Gocong comes back with the lack of playing time he got by the end of the season. The best case senario would be the Eagles trade him to a team that plays a 3-4 defense. I don’t know what you could actually get for him, maybe a 6th round pick, but I think it would be best for both parties if that would happen.

If either Reggie Brown or Kevin Curtis came back, I’d lean to Brown more because of health reasons. I don’t think Curtis can stay healthy for a full season anymore. I’d prefer them both to be gone and the Eagles draft a receiver in the later rounds who can be a big contributor returning kick offs and at least split time with DeSean Jackson as a punt returner.

Sometimes it's just fun to take the family for a spin around the lake in the old boat. Even if it's not your family or your boat, and they're screaming for you to stop.

If there is a God...

…Reggie Brown and Kevin Curtis will be cut, Kolb and Vick will be traded for picks, and we will resign Jason Avant.

...But if he pulls the rug on his quarterback, Reid must do it knowing that he let McNabb down more than McNabb ever let him down.

by EvilBanner on Jan 16, 2010 11:41 AM EST reply actions

looks like you and I, sir, are on the same page except I’d rather have just one QB Vick or Kolb traded.

by fhqwagads on Jan 16, 2010 12:42 PM EST up reply actions

Sick of McReid

since big red just got his contract extended, i think McNabb needs to go. I don’t think Kolb is the answer, but think Vick could be. With a great receiving corps who could even make Vick look like a good QB, the possibility of a running game with Shady, Weaver and Vick (cuz one run for 25 yds this year shows me McNabb isn’t gonna run. OK the actual number was 37 for 140 yds), next year could be exciting… McNabb’s accuracy problems are real, and Vick was one bright spot in the playoffs. I agree with Sheridan’s assessment though – big red let donny mac down in a big way. we should have fired reid and gone after cowher. and yes, Curtis, Reggie should go, along with westy while he still has some trade value. and whatever the cost, we should get weapon X back in Eagles green.

by kilauea50 on Jan 16, 2010 1:09 PM EST up reply actions

Kilauea50.............

as much as prolly 95% of us want BDAWK back, but thats never gonna happen. Maybe when hes gonna retire we will sign him back for one day so he can retire a Eagle. Also u really cant say Vick had a good playoff off of 2 plays ???? I think we should Westy around 2 continue 2 mentor Shady. And the guy we should trade while he has sum value still is Mcnabb, 2 the right team he could possibly be worth a late 1st rounder for us.

by goldenbird09 on Jan 16, 2010 4:01 PM EST up reply actions

I didn't say

Vick had a good playoff. I said he was a bright spot [with the completion for the TD]. He also had a fumble that led to a TD, but so did McNabb in wk 17. I think the potential with the receivers we have for that type hookup to be a possibility more often with the ball in Vick’s hands than in McNabb’s or Kolb’s. Good point about mentoring, but how much is it gonna cost us to keep him in a limited role, when it’s been shown that McCoy/Weaver are capable of doing much of what Westy did? And he seems to still want to play.

by kilauea50 on Jan 17, 2010 8:10 PM EST up reply actions

WOW

1. Vick is NOT the answer!
2. Vick wasn’t as much a bright spot as he threw one good pass when the defense clearly expected a run.
3. Reggie Brown will not be cut unless the year is un-capped. He is WAY cheaper to cut next year, and not a bad insurance policy.
4. Westy has NO trade value. His contract is SKY HIGH, and no team is taking that contract with an injury prone 30+year old back. I don’t even think the Eagles want him at the $$$ they ‘ll have to pay. He will either restructure with the birds, or get cut.
5. Dawkins isn’t coming back to the Eagles

"EFF YOU, WE'RE WINNING ANYWAY!!!!!!" (Bye, Dawk)

by jalarsen1 on Jan 16, 2010 4:38 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

exactly my point

2. “threw one good pass when the defense clearly expected a run.”

Under McReid defenses NEVER expect a run, which is why little d could sit all over our receivers and force McNabb to try to make a play with his arm, which he was unable to do.

We’ve seen that McNabb (under Reid’s system) is not the answer. I have serious doubts about whether Kolb is the answer (big yards against KC – big deal, and big yards against NO, when we were in obvious pass mode for the entire 2nd half, but he threw 3 picks in that game).

“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”. The hallmark of the Reid era.

by kilauea50 on Jan 17, 2010 8:22 PM EST up reply actions

Vick, seriously? Vick is nowhere near the QB donovan is. And I feel bad for the team that will end up giving us a 3rd rounder for him.

If doing the same thing over and over again is making the playoffs and winning the 3rd most games in a decade in the NFL. I’ll keep doing it.

by jho on Jan 18, 2010 10:15 AM EST up reply actions

He's not the passer that McNabb is...

But the position is about more than just passing. McNabb has all but forsaken his ability to run, which throws defenses off. Vick showed flashes of what he could do during the season. But he wasn’t used nearly enough to give the true sense of what he is capable of. With his threat to run, and the deep threats we have at receiver, I think it’s a better mix than just seeing what happens with another year of McNabb.

Doing the same thing is not winning the Super Bowl. Don’t get me wrong, the playoff runs have been great, and we’ve been lucky to have a team that is as competitive as the Eagles have been over the past decade. But until we win the big one at least once, as cowpies fans say, all those playoff wins don’t mean sh!t.

I’d be sick if the Eagles even thought about Vick starting for this team. No way. Anyone who thinks McNabb or Kolb are not the answer, Vick is much, much worse.

Plus linemen seem to be on a long leash around these parts. Also, Abiamiri … isn’t his strength playing the run? People just looking at his lack of sacks might not be viewing this through the same prism as the front-office talent evaluators.
