Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Welcome to the offseason Eagles Fans. :/

We had a great year running up an 11-5 record, but unfortunately we rung up a string of injuries and our 6 game winning streak going into week 17 couldn’t hold up to a scarily healthy Cowboy’s team  (Not a one on IR, seriously?)then or again on Sunday in the Wild Card round.

I want to review the three phases of our team based on what happened this year and what we should do this offseason. Starting off after the jump with the phase that needs the most improvement, our defense.

Star-divide

First, Let’s review our Defense.

With the loss of JJ(RIP) and BDawk, our defense was forced to find a new identity this year under Sean McDermott.  We had a hell of a time all year dealing with injuries focused at the linebacker position. Finding a replacement for Dawkins proved unsuccessful.  Midseason acquisition of Witherspoon was a good move and having him locked up for a long time is quite advantageous. Our linebacking core next year looks to be Spoon, Bradley, and Jordan with backups White, Gocong, Fokou, and Mays.  This is all dependent on Bradleys recovery from his ACL tear. This generally takes  more than a year and with the poor play from the seven or so guys who stepped in at Mike after Bradley, not one showed enough there to take the spot. This offseason we need to find a stopgap for the Mike position, or if progress is bad enough on Bradley’s knee, a replacement altogether. Our run defense truly suffered this year, while still being in the top half of the league; it was far below the quality run defense we have seen the last two years.  Trotter will go back into retirement.  And Joe Mays, after having a very special preseason last year looked lost all year long.  The OLB positions have a ton of talent lurking in Jordan, Spoon, Fokou, White, and Gocong. Jordan and Spoon are pure ballers. White made a lot of big plays this year when he was on the field, going full motor all the time. Gocong has proven to be stout in run defense, while poor against the pass. Fokou has shown he has talent, but reminds me of Demps, making a lot of stupid penalties.

Our defensive backs lost Dawkins this year, and the hole there was obvious. None of the three competitors there made a case that they should be back next year.  All took bad angles tackling, were questionable against the pass, and made stupid penalties. Mikell went from All-Pro to mediocre.  Asante and Sheldon are top notch, possibly the best tandem in the league. The nickel position this year I lost some faith as Joselio got picked on extensively after he came back from his suspension. This was very evident in the beginning of both Cowboys games.  He simply cannot perform that way in the nickel and continue to earn the starter money we are paying him.  Patterson played well and from what I could tell, outplayed Hanson.

Defensive Line. Same story, different year.  Trent cole is a superstar. Bunkley and Patterson can stop the run but don’t get pressure to the QB on first and second down. Trevor Laws is a legitimate bust after losing his job to UFA Dixon. Parker had an up year, but was consistently shut down by good right tackles. The rest of the rotating DE position was mostly invisible this year.   As has been stated very often, a bookend opposite Cole will bring much greater success to this team.

Offseason Adjustments: MLB, DE, FS, young talent at CB, SS. In that order.

We have a ton of exciting talent on offense.  This season we saw our offense put up more points (429) than an Eagles team ever has.  With great receivers Jackson, Maclin, Celek, and Avant, receiving many passes from McNabb, this was primarily a passing offense.  Our running game was overall very weak with our former cornerstone, Westbrook quickly fading into obsolescence. Second round draft pick Shady Mccoy was serviceable, and quite good receiving out of the backfield with 40 catches on the year. But he struggled hitting holes sometimes waiting too long for a big play to develop.  Weaver ran and received very well out of the fullback position but when used as primary back in games later in the season his YPC dipped severely.  As we look to holes on this side of the ball we can see that our running game was weak, not showcasing a single 100 yard rusher on the year and that our line was talented, but injured. If we can find a stud running back we will be able to sustain more drives, allowing for more opportunities to bomb it to Desean, and keeping our defense off the field longer. Third and short improved from last year, which isn’t saying much. I still want to see us get better there.

Jackson’s injury will keep him out most of next year, and he may never be the same again. Cole did not adequately fill the position. Finding a new center is key to success next year.  If he is the starter I am confident he will improve over his end of the year performance as most of the Center position is Line QB. Cole is a quality blocker, evidenced by his play at RG this year.  If we choose to stay with him I am sure Juan and Jackson will show him the ropes.  Stacy Andrews has one more year to show us why we paid him a ton of money after an injury. Shawn Andrews career is over.  MJG is no good. The rest of the line was a surprise success despite heavy injury.  Depth at the tackle position must be addressed as Dunlap is doing his best huge man who cant block stunt.

Jackson is the flash stretching defenses to the limit. Maclin was and will be amazing next year; he is a truly great talent. Avant can snag anything. (I assume we resign him). Curtis after two injury filled years appears to be done as an Eagle with a 5M price tag next year.  Reggie Brown gives us a nice reminder of just how bad our receivers used to be, never making a clutch grab.  Unfortunately, due to monetary reasons he will stick around.  Celek is a stud. Alex Smith is replaceable, but a good fit for the money. Ingram most likely doesn’t have the knee to stick in the NFL. A backup TE may be in draft order, but probably not until the 6th round.

Quarterback. Mcnabb found the deep threat he always wanted in Jackson two years ago and they tied an NFL record this year with long touchdowns.  McNabb has a year left under contract, and barring a desperate team offering two first round picks, I do not see that changing. Kolb filled in admirably for his two starts this year setting an NFL record with two 300yd passing games in his first two starts. Vick was our running qb complement who passed a few times. His stats this year weren’t spectacular. (They were downright awful until the Atlanta game) Hopefully we can squeeze a third out of someone for Vick this offseason.  Which would be great with me, buying a 3rd round pick for a PR hit is highway robbery.  This year we will see who the Eagles extend, be it Kolb or Mcnabb.  With both of their contracts up in 2010 well know soon enough. From my point of view, I think we should extend Mcnabb. Kolb’s arm just makes me feel like he will be a turnover machine. The browns and ravens games last year make me sick just thinking about it. Now, not to say that I’ll be outraged if he is our starter at some point. His touch is good and he can lead receivers. I do believe that MacJack would get significantly improved YAC with Kolb, I just don’t see us being a better team with Kolb at the helm right now.

Offseason Adjustments: Resign Weaver, C, RB, Resign Avant, G, TE, T depth, QB

Special Teams.

Akers. A Desean. A Dorenbos A. (Didn’t hear his name all season, so he’s doing a great job.)

Kick Returner. C. This continues to elude Reid. Everyone he put back there was fumble prone. Hobbs could at least hit a hole. Demps was average at best. Macho was downright awful.

Offseason Adjustments: Find someone who can return kickoffs. Andy, if you get Cribbs I will never doubt you again.

Keeping in mind Andy's love of the lines, but tendency for securing value, vote on the poll for where you think that the 24th overall pick will go.

MLB, DE, FS, young talent at CB, SS. In that order.

I’d substitute OLB for MLB, and then swing it all the way around to the tail end of that list, and I’d add OL depth to the mix, but otherwise I agree.

And first post, jho? Not bad.

I voted Traded Away

as I had mentioned in the fanshot – Reid likes his second rounders so I’ll guess he trades his 1st round pick for a 2nd and something else. That way he has more options to pick up what he wants. Just a thought. I agree with the necessities though.. MLB, FS, DE, Some OL depth, SS, CB. that would be my order.

I agree with the positions mentioned but I don’t want them to reach for a guy. Best player available.

24th pick...

(if we don’t trade it away) will be used for the best player available at S, DE, or CB. I think those three are at equal levels of need.

LB and OL are other areas of need, but I don’t think Andy will draft a LB in the 1st round and I don’t think our 1st rounder will be needed to be used on OL depth. We will will look at the mid-to-later rounds for OL prospects to develop.

have you seen him???

Youtube him.. He’s big, he’s strong, he’s fast and super athletic… He hits pretty hard and better yet is a sure tackler…

This year he chased down Ingram(heisman guy) from behind running in a straight line… and got him to the ground on like the 3yard line then proceeded to stop them 3 times in a row for the goal-line stand..

Im telling you now, Micah Johnson will be something special in the NFL. I think if we get him he can play and LB position we have… He’s like the size of D. Ware.

Saying wild_eagle loves Micah johnson is an understatement. I’m starting to believe wild has a statue of Micah somewhere in his room and every night before he goes to bed he sacrifices a small animal to him in order to repent his sins for the day.

The three most important positions by far are S and DE

Not sure about the order, but they need to use #24 on one and sign a stud free agent for the other. I would probably say draft a safety and sign a DE just because the DE free agent class is better than the safety this year. Also it probably will take longer to get a rookie DE onto the field and making a serious impact than it would for a S. If we do end up trading Mcnabb, than it should be to get a higher 1st rounder which could secure one of the best safeties or DE’s in the draft.

by thebirds77 on Jan 12, 2010 5:24 PM EST reply actions

we either have to go safety in the first....

or pick up one in free agency(otogwe, bethea). i’m of the opinion that we go after aaron kampman and then draft our free safety of the future. we need results at both positions quickly, but i think it would be better to have that incoming veteran on the line. it seems like it takes 2-3 years for that light to come on when you play defensive end.

I’m hoping the Birds pick up Julius Peppers through free agency. It’s hard to tell what position they’ll target in the 1st round. They usually take the best player available & they always draft for depth, not need. It all depends on who’s available. Eric Berry is the player I want. If not him, then OT Anthony Davis, MLB Brandon Spikes or CB Javier Arenas.

by DannyO on Jan 12, 2010 6:46 PM EST reply actions

berry will be long gone. And trading up that high will be very costly. Spikes or McClain should be around in the late teens. Davis will also be gone. Arenas will be around and I can definetly see the Eagles giving him a long hard look.
If they stay put I’ve got my money on them taking Earl Thomas or Derrick Morgan.

by jho on Jan 12, 2010 8:58 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah I'm in the Thomas camp

I think Morgan will go in the top 15 picks. He is probably the safest defensive end pick in the draft

by tanman5 on Jan 13, 2010 12:43 AM EST up reply actions

I would be delighted if we pick up an impact linebacker in the first round. Stew and Spoon are a good start, but if we grabbed another we could have a mighty scary LB corps. Historically, LB has been our weakest spot on defense. I know Andy Reid values linemen and the secondary a little more, but maybe he changes his mind this year.

We need more production from the DE opposite Cole. I don’t think it’s on our team. We’ve got good situational guys to rotate in and keep everyone fresh. We’re great on depth, but I still want a beast at DE on the other side of Cole. I’d love it if we traded into the top 10 for such a guy.

I think we will see some serious progression out of Macho Harris or Quintin Demps, though. I’m not sure we will draft a safety at all. I just think Andy Reid wants to see more from them before he casts them aside. I find it hard to believe that neither of them will be ready to play next year.

I don’t think we need to draft anyone on offense, except using one of our 4th round pick on a RB and a late, late pick on a WR. I don’t think we’re as bad off on the O-line as we seem. We might draft a center but that’s it. If everyone comes back that was injured this year, we become deep again. It’s just hard when 60% of our line is on IR, plus Tupou will come off IR. We are plenty deep on the line.

by yomjoseki on Jan 12, 2010 10:50 PM EST reply actions

We’re not deep at Tackle. We only have Dunlap behind Peters and Justice.

Agreed on LB and DE…the only problem with picking up a DE so early is that it’s really hard to judge how a DE will do in the pros based on college. The O-Lineman in college, and their blocking schemes are vastly inferior to NFL lineman and their schemes. It’s better to take a guy with promise and groom him, or get a veteran.

I’m not done with Macho (except on Kick returns, I’d like to never see him return a kick again!), I think he has some upside. Demps needs to get his ass in gear and decide to work this offseason. I hope he learned that nothing will be handed to him.

Technically, Justice is a backup. Shawn Andrews is our starter and Herremans can play tackle as well. We’re absolutely set for depth at tackle if we bring everyone back. Guard may be a different story. I think MJG is gone but Nick Cole earned himself a spot as a backup. We will probably need to draft a center.

We have to draft a Center..

and Im sorry but Justice is a starter… Andrews must earn that spot back from him.

Im all for the “starter” getting there job back when they return from injury but Andrews has missed 2 years and will be getting his first shot a RT, but Ive gotta say Justice really showed up and he entrenched hisself into that starting RT spot… He has to be given a fair shot at defending his spot.

I think safety

There are three first-round quality safeties, and defensive ends take a couple of years to contribute. They should go free agency (Julius Peppers, Aaron Kampman, or Ray Edwards) for that position, possibly scoop up Derrick Johnson for linebacker depth and draft Earl Thomas out of Texas, who will probably go after Taylor Mays despite being more NFL-ready.

by tanman5 on Jan 13, 2010 12:42 AM EST reply actions

Safety

I agree with you about everything you said. Plus signing a FA DE will make a much quicker impact instead of drafting one. I think i like Taylor Mays more than Thomas. Taylor Mays is 6’3 230lbs of hard hitting football. I wouldnt be surprised if he hits harder than dawk. Check out some highlights.

Yeah Mays is a physical beast

But I’ve heard questions about his instincts in coverage. I’ve even heard him compared him to Roy Williams.

Don’t get me wrong, the talent is there and I think if somebody could get him to reach his potential, it’s McDermott. But Thomas seems to be better in coverage and more NFL-ready. But I’d be happy with Thomas, Mays, or (in the event of a miracle) Eric Berry. Between Mays and Thomas, if we have to choose, I’d trust Andy to make the right decision.

by tanman5 on Jan 13, 2010 1:05 AM EST up reply actions

Mays has bust all over him, here in LA i got to watch/go to a USC games, and other than the occasiional Big hit, and rare INT, the guy is a BUST. Im hoping that Eagles dont go after him.

I wouldn’t go DE in the first round seems like a waste of a pick since finding a good DE or any D-Linemen for that matter in the draft is like a crap shoot as most describe it. If we do use the 24th pick in the draft I would like a Free Safety who will step in and be able to effectively quarterback the secondary for us. I think Mikell’s play slipped this year because he had to be responsible for the headset and lining people up, when that used to be Dawkins job and Mikell could just worry about getting out there and playing.

by fhqwagads on Jan 13, 2010 4:52 AM EST reply actions

keep in mind next year the headset should go back to stew.

Being that we never use our rbs we could cut all of them and have more money to pump into overpaind oft injured offensive linemen. Then when our lineman get hurt we could plug them in with college free agents or late rd draft picks and blame Mcnabb for not throwing td passes with 275pd defensive linemen draped all over him!! Is it me of isnt Andy Reid supposed to be an “expert” on olinemen? giving a guy in march a contract after he just blew his acl out in dec was a great idea!!!!

“could plug them in with college free agents” ( was talking about nick cole) who was never drafted

by Eagles fly on Jan 13, 2010 3:11 PM EST reply actions

Why do people keep saying we have no depth on the line? We got raped by injuries this year.

Our starters at tackle going into this year were Jason Peters and Shawn Andrews. Herremans, Stacy Andrews, and Justice can all play tackle if needed. Stacy and Shawn missed most of the season creating the illusion of lack of depth. Then Jamal Jackson got hurt. All the guys we normally shift around were missing.

Our line before Jackson tore his ACL, despite missing Stacy and Shawn, consisted of Justice, Herremans, Jackson, Cole, and Justice. Pretty damned good line considering we’re missing 2 starters. Jackson was the straw that broke the camels back. We can handle missing 2/5ths of our line. Not 3/5ths.

I see us drafting a center and retaining Cole. If we do that, then we got Peters, Herremans, Jackson, Andrews, and Andrews as starters. That’s huge. Then, we still have Justice, Cole, and the rookie center available as backups. That’s Peters, Justice, Herremans, and both Andrews that can play tackle, Herremans, both Andrews, and Cole that can play guard, and Jackson, Cole, and the rookie center that can play Center.

In addition to them, we’ll have more depth behind them. Tupou was drafted last year before he went on IR and will be available next year in training camp, so we can get a look at him.
