Ed (Big Blue View, Giants)
- Giants (11-5)
- Eagles (10-6)
- Cowboys (9-7)
- Redskins (7-9)
I have spent the entire off-season listening to 'experts' sing the praises of the Philadelphia Eagles. I know the Eagles are good, but I don't get the media man-crush. Let me remind everyone which team won the Super Bowl in 2007 -- the Giants. Defending NFC East champs? Giants. Considered the best team in the NC most of last season? The Giants.
No, things did not end well for the Giants last season. They wore down defensively last season, but with all the new faces on defense that should not be an issue this time. They should be able to control the line of scrimmage. Offensively, they still have that terrific offensive line and a great running game. Yes, they have a question at wide receiver. They have talent there, however, and the other pieces of this team should give them time to answer the receiver question.
Ken (Hogs Haven, Redskins)
- Giants (11-5)
- Redskins (10-6)
- Cowboys (9-7)
- Eagles (8-8)
I see the Eagles being the good team that disappoints this season in the NFL. The Eagles simply do not look sound on defense right now. Their recent performance against the hapless Jags leaves me scratching my head. The losses of both Bradley and Jim Johnson (R.I.P.) will be too much to overcome this year. The Cowgirls have all the tools they need this year and by season’s end they should be in position to make the NFC East a 3-playoff team division once again. That assumes that Wade Phillips can get his defense under control. They underachieved last season and the pressure is on him to get the defense playing up to their potential.
As for the Redskins, nobody has them picked to do anything. They are precisely the exact kind of team that sneaks up on the league every year. They have some veteran skill players, and they have a few young players who could be ready to contribute this season in Devin Thomas, Malcolm, Kelly, Fred Davis, and Brian Orakpo. If Jason Campbell plays within himself, the early schedule favors a quick start. It is important to note that nobody is picking the Skins to finish last in the NFC East because they suck. Everybody just thinks that the rest of the teams in the division are very, very strong. This Redskins team is capable of being the surprise in the NFL this year. It happens every year. Coach Jim Zorn is definitely more comfortable and the defense is going to be as strong if not stronger than last year. A homer pick? Maybe. But who besides Falcons’ fans picked them to go to the playoffs last year?
Aaron (Blogging the Boys, Cowboys)
- Cowboys (10-6)
- Eagles (10-6)
- Redskins (9-7)
- Giants (7-9)
Playing the NFC South will push the Beasts to play solid defensive football against some of the most talented offenses in the conference. All should do well against the AFC West, but I don't see any one team dominating the division.
Losing Spagnuolo to St. Louis will hamper the Giants more than it will help the Rams. Several heartbreaking losses hand the Giants a disappointing season record. Philadelphia will also lack continuity on defense as the loss of Brian Dawkins and defensive coordinator Jim Johnson will force the offense to pick up the slack. A late season surge gets them in the playoffs. The Redskins will show improvement and be a pain to the rest of the division, but won't get enough wins to be a contender. Quietly, the Cowboys work all season on controlling the ball, eliminating mistakes, and playing good defense. They strike quickly when needed, which helps them defeat Philly in Week 17 for the division title.
Jason (Bleeding Green Nation, Eagles)
- Giants 11-5
- Eagles 9-7
- Dallas 9-7
- Redskins 7-9
I'm not exactly sure which experts Ed has been listening to, but every media outlet and their mother has picked the Giants to not only win the NFC East but the NFC as a whole, despite the fact that it was the Eagles who beat them in their house in the divisional playoffs and made the NFC title game ... that said, I still think the Giants are the best overall team in the division. No doubt that their lack of notable pass catchers makes their offense less scary than in year's past, but I don't buy the talk of their WRs being so bad. I think they're good enough to win with.
Last year I actually picked the Redskins to make the playoffs and be the surprise team of the NFC... They didn't exactly repay that faith. I honestly thought Jason Campbell was ready to "take the next step." He didn't. I think he'll be the same player this year and I think the Redskins will be generally the same team as last year. Not bad, but mediocre.
The Dallas Cowboys have done us the favor of writing their script over the past few years. They'll impress early and get all the national media excited, only to fade in December. I kid, kind of... I do think Dallas is a good team, but I don't really see how they're any better than they were last year. I still see them as a team capable of very high highs, but I think their inability to deal with adversity will still see them reach some low lows. Their running game will still be good, but their passing game will probably regress. I still think their defense will be inconsistent. I still question Wade Phillips as a coach and Tony Romo in big spots.... I find it kind of tough to predict the Cowboys this year. I don't think they're a bad team by any means, I just don't know if I have any confidence in them.
Speaking of scripts... Will we again see the Eagles flatter to deceive early on and be written off as dead only to make an improbable run in December that sees them ending up in the playoffs? It would be a lot easier for me to predict how the Eagles will play this season if I'd actually seen them together at some point this summer. Injuries have kept pro bowlers Brian Westbrook and Shawn Andrews out of the preseason. One of the newest Eagles, pro bowler Jason Peters, was knicked up earlier in the preseason and didn't play a ton. Sheldon Brown hasn't really played in the preseason, neither has Omar Gaither who start at middle linebacker... Kevin Curtis has been knicked up on offense. Starting LG Todd Herremans hasn't played. According to the Eagles, most of all these players will be ready by opening day... but until I actually see them on the field I'll remain skeptical. I think it's a very talented team on paper, but we don't play the games on paper.

Man, why is everyone all over the Giants nuts?
They didn’t get much, if any better, and we beat them twice in their home stadium.
I am the people's troll :3™
I'm trying to figure out the same thing...
Eli lost his security blanket and even with that security blanket he didn’t have good numbers, and that defensive line that some writers say has the chance to be one of the best ever is going to disappoint.

Giants are a good team.
Great O line and great D line. That’s where it all starts. Wideouts are shakey but they dont have plax’s drama any more either.
Worse
They didn’t get much, if any better,…
They got worse, on paper. They got back a beast on the D, but their Defense was already really good last year.. so it’s not gonna change things by much. Their biggest changes and difference is that their offense got worse, losing multiple marquee names, worse. I see them going down a notch from last year, easily.
Weak Defense
When did the Giants loses start occurring? Late December the whole “Dropped three of their last four games” thing that’s been brought up so commonly when talking about the ‘08 Giants. Our Defense was good last year, but not down the stretch. We were playing tired with Justin Tuck playing injured and getting double teamed. We had almost no rotation, our linebackers weren’t playing well, and all in all we were a worn team.
Start the ‘09 season with the return of Osi on the end, the additions of Canty and Bernard to the line, and the additions of Sintim and Boley to our linebackers. There’s rotation in our Ends, Tackles, and Linebackers. That’s something we didn’t have last year. As for our offense, it’s a step backward with a potential leap forward. People underestimate Bradshaw’s abilities as a Runningback. I’d suggest not, but I’d much rather see people stunned when he’s dodging tackles. I could be eating some humble pie by year end, but personally I see Bradshaw as even better than Ward. And though our receivers aren’t big names like Toomer and Burress we’ve hardly hit this rock bottom people think.
Toomer was great, but slow. The Giants could have kept Toomer around, but clearly decided against it after realizing there’s more potential in 7 young receivers under the age of 25 than an aged veteran who lacks the speed to seperate anymore. Losing Burress hurt, but just ask the Cardinals about challenging Eli to play the passing game without Burress. It can be done. The Giants are a run first team, but Eli has proven himself to be able to take to the air when challenged. If anything this Giant’s team is much better than last year. Sure we lost a few good players, but our depth in the front seven along with our potentially league leading running game makes the team very dangerous.
except that...
of that new rotation you speak og half of those players are currently banged up.

Nothing New
Might be blind optimism speaking here, but we’re always playing banged up. Sure almost all of defenders are coming off an injury/surgery of some kind, but there’s still no reason to claim that our defense has gotten worse. It’s much better to have a rotation of players than to have the same starting line who played injured for a good majority of last year. I actually wonder if there’s ever a game where Tuck isn’t battling some kind of injury.
I don’t know if you can blame the 3 of 4 on the defense solely. In your last 5 games Manning threw for 123 yards, 191 yards, 181 yards, 119 yards, 169 yards, and 2 Tds to 4 INTs. The only game you won during that stretch Ward had 215 yards rushing and Jacobs had 3 TDs other than that no RB eclipsed 100 yards in those games.
I think your offense not being able to move the ball hurt you and put your defense on the field more and ultimately that is what lead to the decline. We as Eagles fans know all to well that a great D can look pretty bad when the offense isn’t moving the ball.
I’ll be interested to see how the Giants move the ball with the weapons they have. But using the Arizona Cardinals as an example of Eli being able to take to the air is weak at best. The cards were the 22nd ranked Passing D last year. And gave up the most passing TDs of any team in the league. So you’ll excuse me if I take my grain of salt now.

Oh don’t get me wrong, I don’t pin our losing streak last year solely on the D, but I just notice a lot of people arguing that our Defense is weaker than last year, when the main weakness of our defense last year was that it was stretched too thin. I realize it was still up to our offense to win or lose our games. I’m not arguing that at all. I just want to clarify that if anything, our defense has gotten a great deal better than last year.
And yeah, two of Eli’s biggest passing games came against poor pass defenses, but his biggest game of last year (305) was against the Redskins who were 7th in the league for pass defense. Point is, Eli has been challenged to win through the air, and barring terrible post season games which I’m slowly deluding myself into believing never actually happened, Eli can be very potent on offense—without Burress. That Washington game was the game after Burress shot himself.
very true … if memory serves Eli threw for a high number but only had 1 TD and an INT. Also wasn’t this the Sean Taylor induction game, emotions were probably running high on the Redskins side. All I’m saying is even a blind squirrel finds a nut eventually.
Listen I don’t think Eli is a bad QB like Rex Grossman is a bad QB, I think he is an okay QB like Ben Roethlisberger is an okay QB. With great running games they can protect the ball and make some throws.

Man, why is everyone all over the Eagles nuts
They didn’t get much, if any better, and the Redskins beat them twice last season.
They were in the NFC title game? Who really cares about losing to the Redskins when you’re making deep runs in the postseason?
And the Eagles beat the Giants twice…
my point
is that teams pose matchup problems. The Eagles had the Giants number just like the Redskins had the Eagles number, just like the Titans had the Jaguars number back in ’99 (the were 14-2, both losses to the Titans and then lost to them again in the AFC Championship game).
The Eagles were hot at the end of the year and the Giants were hot at the beginning. The year before that it was the other way around (or was it, I honestly don’t remember if the Eagles were ever good in ’07). But to suggest that the Giants all of a sudden suck and the Eagles are great based solely on the last 5 games of the season last year is a little dishonest. Unless you think the Steelers and the Cardinals are gonna be the two best teams in the NFL this year?
Let me remind everyone which team won the Super Bowl in 2007 — the Giants. Defending NFC East champs? Giants. Considered the best team in the NC most of last season? The Giants.
Umm…this is the 2009 season. How does the Giants winning the Superbowl two years ago convince me that they are going to be amazing this season? It doesn’t, that’s how.
The Eagles simply do not look sound on defense right now. Their recent performance against the hapless Jags leaves me scratching my head.
Seriously? Put a little more stock into a preseason game, why don’t you? People who think this team is going to lay down on defense are wrong. We may take a small step back, but by no means will our defense be a complete pushover.
JasonB, your thoughts on the upcoming season definitely look the most objective and unbiased, and I’m not just saying that because you blog for the Eagles. The other 3 bloggers seem to have a slightly inflated view of their own team, but that is understandable too.

I'm honestly a bit worried
About our defense…our linebacking corps is WEAK!!! Now Joe Mays won’t even be available week one to back Gaither up. We have a rookie starting Safety, and I think those mid-depth passes to the Tight Ends are going to kill us!
I also think if our offense gets in a rhythm we should probably be able to score more points than our D gives up
"What did it feel like? That collision, I didn't feel nothing, because he was pretty much defenseless. It was like running through a cardboard box. Seriously. Cardboard box."- Sheldon Brown on his pounding of Reggie Bush in the '06 Playoffs
Well I’m concerned for week 1 too, but I think we will be solid over the course of the season. Not as great as last year, but solid.

JasonB, you definately had the most unbiased post. You’re the only one who didn’t pick his own team to finish with double digit wins. The guy from hogs haven on the other hand… not only 10 wins for the redskins but just 8 (and last place) for the Birds. Ridiculous. Then again, I guess if I were a skins fan I wouldnt want to predict myself for last (where theyll finish) so someone else had to play the role haha
Yeah, I’m just being honest. I think this Eagles team has the potential to be really good. I like the talent on the team, I just haven’t seen all that talent on the field playing together. So if I’m trying to make an honest prediction, that has to come in to play for now.

I actually agree with Jason on this one. I’ve got you guys winning the division this year. By no means do I think the Giants record will be 7-9, but I think the Eagles and Cowboys will make some surprise leaps this year – both of these teams are going to flourish in the underdog role. I’m not sure the Giants will take many steps back, but something tells me they just won’t be able to keep up this year. It looks like they’re going to suffer from the same over-confidence the Cowboys did the last few years.
I’m so sick of people talking about who won Superbowls and playoff games – you’re going to be sorely dissapointed if you think somehow that translates to a new season. These teams all respect each other, but I don’t think any of the other three teams will fear the Giants because of a miraculous Superbowl run, two years ago, that was anchored by a defense that has had a lot of parts replaced and injured since. (Not to mention losing their BEST offensive player, and a very important cog in the running game)
Hilarious.
They lost Derrick Ward and Burress.
I'm not gonna go overboard
and say that Derrick Ward sucks, but he’s wildly overrated. He is completely a product of the Giants O-line. Ahmad Bradshaw is both a better runner and a better receiver than Ward, and will have no trouble filling in for his production.
So the either the Giants’ coaches didn’t know or didn’t believe Bradshaw was better? If they did think that, wouldn’t they have played him over Ward?
I also like how Ward rushed for virtually the same about of yards as Jacobs, but it’s Ward who is nothing more than a product of his environment and worse than the Giants’ 3rd string back.
Jason Nailed it!
This is one of the things that has been bothering me all season from G-men fans. The guys was like a 1/3 of your offensive production last year and he was just a “product of the system”. Bradshaw was on the team last year, if he was better he would have played more than Ward. I’ll even go further with it. Bradshaw was great during the playoff run two years ago when the starters were banged up. The next year where did he find himself? Right back in the third string spot. If he really was better than Ward he would have played last year.

Bradshaw was hurt all last year
nagging muscle strain in his league that took his burst away. He’s running really determined right now. Don’t take my word for it though, you’ll see :)

this
plus he’s had some fumbling issues. That’s probably my biggest concern about him (he reminds me of a young Tiki Barber in a lot of ways). Plus he had some legal issues over the offseason that may have impacted some of his playing time.
And Jason, question: why’d Correll Buckhalter get more carries than Brian Westbrook in 2003? Was he the better running back? Did he have the brighter future? Or was it maybe b/c coaches sometimes make strange decisions and the best players don’t always get onto the field right away?
Here’s the thing about Derrick Ward: he’s not even going to be starting in Tampa!
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
Who ever makes these pridiction is of the wall.WHY? Giants have no WR and the big guys that they signed on D are out….Redskins is dont even care about them they gonna be 8-8 best..Cowboys dont have #1 WR, no more TO and all the have on D is Ware thats it. People get on eagles no more Dawkins what you guys gonna do now(He was my favorite player) but he was getting to be done, we have the best team over all people and its all the same people from the team that went to NFC Championship game……So get of the nuts of Giants and Cowboys and if your a redskins fan don even bother.
im gonna have to agree
Plax made Eli good, there running game has taken a small step back and they lost a few defenders. Granted they got Osi back there D-line is great no question but there lacking in to many other spots.
Redskins are going to be hell on O lines…. other than that I dont see them posting too much of a threat
Dallas lost TO, agreed he was a locker room threat but he was also an offensive threat. Thewre O-line is ageing and thier defence is only par.
Now for the Birds, Our line is healthy and massive- without a doubt one of the best. Probably a close 2nd to Giants. Our running and passing games have improved. Defense will take a small step back but it wont be as bad as everyone thinks. Dawkins was the man no question but he was ageing. with some fresh new secondary guys we should do just fine- ecspecially in our division, one with no big WRs. Gaither played ILB well when he started so im not too worried about him. I expect our D-Line to make the next step with Babin helping out. Ofcourse JJ is a huge lose but Im sure is protege’ is ready for the task
Ef em, Were winning anyway!
RIP JJ
Some Corrections
Plax made Eli good, there running game has taken a small step back and they lost a few defenders.
Plax made Eli good. Two of Eli’s best passing games last year were without Burress. His highest passing game (305 yards against Washington) was right after Burress had his accident, and the prior game against Arizona Eli gained 240 yards through the air and mind you Plaxico caught only one ball that game before stepping out. Also, Eli’s third high passing game that season came against the Seahawks in the game Plaxico was suspended from after skipping practice. He had over 100 yards to Domenik Hixon alone. Eli is good without Plaxico.
[their] running game has taken a small step back Potentially. Ahmad Bradshaw has a lot of potential. Remember the ‘07 game against Buffalo that put the Giants into the Super Bowl winning post season? Ahmad Bradshaw led the team with 151 rushing yards. He also acrued almost 100 yards against Baltimore last year. Yeah, THAT Baltimore. I’m sure on paper one sees the Giants losing a 1,000 yard rusher, but in truth Bradshaw has been backing up Ward for two years now, but has still shown flashes of his skills. Also, our line helped us to be the top rushing offense in the NFL last year. Our running game is strong partially because we have great backs, but also because we have an amazing line. They’ve been lucky with no major injuries. That’s the only concern I have. Bradshaw has the ability to do everything Ward did and more.
they lost a few defenders. Some defenders? Who’s some? We lost Alford for the season. Granted Robbins is coming off an injury, Tuck always seems to be playing hurt, and our secondary (minus the extremely underrated Corey Webster) is battling a few injuries, but we’re not playing with half a deck here. We lost Alford who was a back up for a back up. Granted an amazing back up, but our line still hosts a returned Osi, Tuck, Kiwi, the new tackles of Canty and Bernard to assist the returning Robbins and Cofield, and our linebackers are bolstered with the additions of Boley and Sintim—both great pass rushers. That’s our D-Line’s strength. Pressure to the QB. We haven’t taken a step back there prior to contrary belief. Our D is stronger than ever.
Jason
Did you go through the schedule to predict your wins?
I just don’t see 7 losses on there for the eagles
I would say 3 to the Beast 1 out of the south and maybe one to the chargers or bears
I think both the eagles and giants will finish around 11 wins with the cowboys and redskins around 8
I never like to go through the schedule. It always seems pointless to me. We have no idea how good any of those teams will be when we play them.
I just go by what I think a 9 or 10 win team looks like. If the Eagles were 100 healthy(or close) this summer I probably would have predicted more wins… but how can I say that I know the Eagles will win 11 games when I’ve never seen the most significant parts of the team play together yet?
JasonB no third times a charm for the Redskins, if memory serves you picked them the past 2 years to win the division.
I will agree with this, if the Eagles stay healthy and play together very few teams in the NFL can play with them. But they haven’t done that so I can’t say that.
I would have to agree that as usual you can take the 4 teams in the Beast put the names in a hat and pull them out and whatever order you you pulled out in could be the way the division pans out, as much as all sides hate to agree it’s just that close.

I might have. I’ve been high on the Redskins for a couple of years now… maybe because they keep beating us!
Someone write this down for me
Eagles: 12-4
Giants: 11-5
Redskins: 8-8
Cowboys: 6-10
Four ‘experts’ over on SI chose the PACKERS to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl, twice as much as any other NFC representative. The Packers went 5-11 last year and really changed nothing. They were a true talent team of around 8-8 or 9-7, granted, but that’s just ridiculous.
The two best teams in the NFC by far are the Eagles and Giants.
Here are the right ones
Eagles- 10-6
Dallas 10-6
Wash 9-7
NYG 6-10
In no world do the Giants finish three games behind the middling Redskins.

ESPN got all there guys together to give their predictions… Its interesting. We are mentioned to at least make the playoffs by everyone with a couply superbowl wins with Andy Reid as the Coach of the Year. This all sounds nice but we know it means nothing. Its still interesting to see where everyone thinks we rate.

No offense JasonB..
But, 9-7? I know you can do better than that…
How about 13-3? Sounds sooo much better. =P
And just for the hell of it

Giants>Eagles?
How do you put the Giants ahead of our beloved Eagles? The Giants are going to be terrible this year! They are a one-dimensional offense that has no wide receivers. Kevin Boss is the best option for Eli to throw to. Stop the run and you stop the Giants. I know the Eagles may struggle with that for the linebackers are not too strong or experienced, but the Giants don’t stand a chance to come out on top of the NFC East. They’re lucky if they get the wildcard.
The Giants won 12 games last year. They lost Plaxico Burress & Derrick Ward this offseason and “added” Osi Umenyoria. I don’t see how that makes them 4 or 5 games worse than last year.
I don’t think they’re as good as last year, but if they stay healthy how are they 4 or 5 games worse? Burress is worth 5 wins?
the linebackers are not too strong or experienced,
We lost Stewart Bradley, which is tough but let’s not get to down on our other guys.
before I go further I want to be clear I’m not saying Gaither > Bradley all I’m saying is we could be worse off.
Bradley 2 years NFL experience 17 Games started at MLB.
Gaither 3 years experience 31 games started 16 of which were at MLB.
So forgive me if I fail to see how we lost experience.
